I was listening to music in my car today with my Sprint TP2 hooked up via the 3.5mm audio jack. When I disconnected the phone from the jack, the phone remained in 'headphone mode'. I knew it was in headphone mode still because it displays the little headphone icon on top and I could not hear any audio unless I reconnected the 3.5mm jack. So basically, I can't call anybody from my phone right now unless I hook it up to some speakers via the 3.5mm jack. That or use my BT headset.
Things I have tried to fix the phone;
- Unplugged and replugged in the 3.5mm stereo jack numerous times.*
- Soft reset
- Removed battery for 30 seconds and restarted
- Connected BlueTooth stereo headset and disconnected
* Extra weirdness; Gives me a voice commander error when I reconnect the jack. Voice Commander is not even enabled.
Nothing worked. So I just did a backup of my phone and I'm going to attempt a hard reset. We'll see if that fixes it.
Update: Right after I posted this thread, I tried plugging in several different devices with 3.5mm jacks and the headphone icon disappeared. However, I still did not have any audio. So I did a soft reset and surprise surprise... audio is back!!!
Anybody else encounter this bug? I'm not sure if it's a software or hardware bug, but it's definitely a bug.

sounds like a hardware issue? especially if the soft reset did not resolve the issue...

Sprint and Verizon versions of TP2 have a integrated 3.5mm jack.
I just had the same problem being stuck in headset mode
I tried a soft reset with no luck so I was pretty sure it was something physically wrong. Instead of plugging my headset all the way back in and taking it out, I used the tip of the plug (like a Q-tip, 1/4 of the way in) to see if there were any sensors or metal still depressed and after a few light sweeps, the headset mode icon disappeared. Keeping my fingers crossed, I didn't use the 3.5mm jack for the rest of the night and I was able to use my headset and removed it without a problem this morning.
Ultimately this is most likely a physical issue, but I'd rather not send my phone in for a replacement (even though this would probably qualify as a manufacturer defect). Hope this helps if anyone experiences this in the future.

It is a hardware issue and is common to most 3.5mm jacks. I had also experienced this last year with my Treo Pro and since I really wanted to know the problem, I opened up my phone and voided all warranties. Inside the 3.5mm jack there's a lever type copper that bends to make contact with another copper metal, some kind of switch that's supposed to connect and disconnect the contact between these 2 metal pieces whenever a head 3.5mm plug is inserted.
What happened is when you disconnected the plug, the metal that's supposed to bend back to it's original position never did. That's why it's permanently stucked in headset mode because the phone thinks the plug is still inside. This probably happens due to age and possibly has something to do with moisture and rust, not to mention that copper is highly malleable.
Sad to say that until now this technology hasn't changed and is still being widely used. Hopefully someone will give this issue a real solution.

Yes, the USB headphone adapter works on the CDMA versions. If you plug in a second headphone set to the other open port, which ever one was connected lastly will be the one to have sound.
Fixed the problem!
I had to disassemble the phone, voiding the already expired warranty and solder the contacts together on the audio jack. I can't use a 3.5 mm jack anymore, but I can at least use the phone now without always using a bluetooth. I'll get a usb adapter for when I want to listen to music.
Here is a picture of the contacts I soldered. I used a 20 w soldering iron, I wouldn't use anything larger.

i would hate to do this on my vibrant lol, media sound recently gave out on me after unplugging the headphone. this sucks. id look around for replacement parts..til then.. gotta get busy with the q tips til i get it to work.

I already tried changing regedit and also used the audio gain and microphone fix .cab files, but the basic problem remained: sometimes the mic works, sometimes not. I made soft reset / hard reset several times, still the problem remains. With my bluetooth headset I always have good voice quality even if the mic on the phone is not working. Altogether this drove me to the conclusion that I need to replace the microphone in my HTC s620.

There's a guide for taking apart your excalibur in the sticky, but honestly it doesn't specify how to change your mic but it will give a pretty good idea of what tools to use to open and re-assemble your dash.
Thanks for the response Mr. Clown. Indeed I would need a bit more specific info on how the MIC is attached to the phone and with what method it can be replaced. I read some forums on other type of phones where only the manufacturer is able to replace either the mic or the full board when it is impossible to replace the mic. As I mentioned earlier on Ebay there are two offers recently on OEM HTC mic for s620, however some forums also mention that even if a separate mic can be purchased, it does not guarantee that it can easily be replaced. Unfortunately I am not a tech expert, so I appreciate any guidance on this issue. Many thanks.

I searched a bit further on more general forums and it seems that I found the answer, so I post it here for others facing a similar problem.
It is not impossible but requires quite an experience and expertise to replace the microphone as it is soldered on the pcb. It needs high temparature heating and then the soldering of the new microphone. You can find new OEM microphones on Ebay (there are recently two offers: 3 - 6 USD price range + shipping), but you have to find someone who will replace the mic for you and who is experienced well and will not destroy your board with this procedure.
Here is a simple description of the process:
1. Set heater of your rework station between 400 to 417 degrees celcius, and air make the pointer of the air knob point aj 9 o'clock.
2. Select nozzle size that is not too big or too small for the mic.
3. Apply ample paste on the mic and direct the heat on it. Remove the mic with metal tweezers gently.
4. Apply paste to the interface of the mic to be soldered and then apply tiny solder on the pads to be soldered.
5. Place the mic correctly on the pcb and apply heat from the opposite side of the pcb, and remove the heat when the solder is melted.
Some have reported that this method really works, however I found no information whether it also works for the Excalibur as the interesting point is the exact place of the mic, so by heating it you will not damage other parts of the board.
I contacted the official HTC service and some other mobile experts, so I am looking for someone that can make the replacement for me... It is recommended that you also proceed similarly.

If the mic sometimes works and other times not, why not trying to re-solder the contacts first? This is much easier than removing/replacing the microphone as you can apply the heat one contact after the other.
Dumb question: You are not covering the hole for the mic. with your fingers from time to time?
Thanks for the reply tobbie. I am surely not covering the mic with my finger or any other body parts ; ) So it must be the mic and not me causing the problem. For the time being I am still chasing someone experienced who could do the soldering for me... In the meanwhile I have flashed my ROM from 3VO.2.80.092509 to 3VO.3.50.033010, just to see whether this might be a software porblem. Flashing went well but problem remained. You are right pointing out that the MIC might be absolutely OK, as it sometimes functions well, and this might indicate that the problem is with the connection of the mic with the board and not the mic itself. However if I take the phone into pieces, then I would like to get it done, so I might still order this tiny mic on the internet. Out of curiosity: does anyone knows whether these mics are compatible with each other or not: I saw many Motorola (e.g.: V3) mics that look exactly as the HTC S620 mic, but I don't know whether they are really the identic.
For the time being I use my BT headset till I (hopefully) manage to solve this issue.
For a start, I would stay with HTC devices. All the older ones I have disassembled (typhoon, hurricane, tornado, excalibur, vox) share the same microphone (at least from the looks). Earpiece looks identical for all except the vox, ring-speaker looks identical for the 3 candy-bars while excalibur and vox seem to have the same as well.
Buying spare parts is usually more expensive than getting a used device with a broken screen or otherwise damaged. I have two definitely ruined boards (Tornado with a dead LCD interface + Hurricane with intermittent shut off) and some Typhoon parts that can not make a complete device.
Never soldered anything on the PBA - it is really delicate and if you spoil anything the board is gone. Possibly try to record something with the PBA accessible and apply some force to the mic while doing so. This should reveal if there is problem with soldering.

I will give a try and see how the mic would respond for such a "treatment". In the meanwhile I found a funny forum response from a guy who replaced a PCB soldered SonyEricsson W880 mic without a rework station, by just using a gas butane torch:
"I just managed to replace it. It wasn't so difficult.
First you have to unsolder the mic on the PCB (I used Gas Butane Torch from B&Q as I havn't got a Rework Station)
After that I found some old mic laying in my draw from samsung. I soldered it to the PCB using two thick copper wires
ps. If yo damage a track on the PCB you can solder a positive to the capacitor on the other side of the PCB."
Well it sounds a bit weird, anyway I would still go for an experienced expert with a rework station and proper equipment for replacement.

Last night I dissambled my HTC s620 (it was a bit harder then I thought) and got to the mic, which is under a small rubber case, I cleaned a bit the surroundings, checked the contacts, but from the first sight everything seemed to be tight and fixed, still I pressed the mic a bit but no better mic functionality, actually now I can only here everything said in the mic very-very low and from last night there was no occasion when I could record with normal sound level. This might still indicate bad contact. Anyway, I will get now a replacmenet mic on Ebay and try to replace it. Will report whether it has really solved my problem.
The mic has the following numbers on it: S777 261, I don't know whether these types of mics are really compatible (I assume that they are - not only within the HTC brand but also with similar Motorola mics), anyway I will not go for a cheaper V3 mic but buy one which is advertised as an HTC S620 mic.

You try to check the headset jack may be the cause of it
My phone took a quick swim the other day. Everything works except when I make calls it causes tons of static and I can hear the other person but they can't hear me. The weird thing is with headphones in or on speaker phone the phone works perfectly.
I thought maybe the ear piece speaker was to blame, but I bought a new one and replaced it, and still no luck. Any other thoughts on what may be the issue?

One of the connections came loose to the mic probably.
Happened to me on a old school PS2 headset, I could hear other people and they were all yelling saying I was hurting their ears.
Took the headset apart and sure enough found the unattached connection.
them not being able to hear you when normal call tells me the main mic has failed.
Normal calls use the second mic for noise cancelling only. Speakerphone use either, or just have them swap roles. I can't really tell. The main mic is part of the usb connector assembly. try reseating it first.
I just reseated it i believe. I took the screw out at the bottom of and removed the bottom block (of course after taking the phone apart). Still same staticy noise.
How do I have the speaker phone switch which mic it uses? Maybe I can pinpoint the issue and then order a replacement part?
I know this is an old post, but any progress on this? My nexus is having the exact same problem. I've already replaced the charging port/mic cable and the problem is still there. Thanks
That is all I had to do to get it fixed (replace port/charging + mic cable/ribbon at the bottom of the phone).

The 3.5mm jack on my Elephone P8000 has already stopped working properly after only one day. It just stopped working in one ear and I tried wiggling the 3.5mm plug it a bit to see if that would bring the sound in both ears back and I felt something click a little when I tried pushing the plug down, it sounded like I pushed something further down. The wiggling helped for like one second but after that tiny click, I couldn't bring the sound back in both ears. When I do wiggle the 3.5mm plug, the sound gets louder in the ear that it already works in.

+1 also. I couldn't see where it needed soldering. Glass is coming off as well. probably can't send it back because I opened it. Would be too much hassle anyway. But that's the risk when not purchasing from a bricks and mortar shop..

Hey people, I was wondering if anyone has had the faulty headphones issue. After a few days, my headphones stopped working properly, there was a lot of static and they need to be pushed and held towards the screen to function again. This is going on with 3 pairs so it's a phone fault.Maybe all the tech savvy experts here can chime in and propose something.

I was thinking of taking it to a local repair shop around here in the weekend. Whoever finds a solution first I guess. Also I have noticed this visi0nary. de/ ?p=30 (I can't post links yet). I think it looks similar

Sadly it's not the same problem visi0nary describes on his blog. The Mass contact is fine.
I had the phone open for a few minutes and it seems like all contact wrap thight around the plug. I guess the problem is a broken soldered point at the back of the circuit board.
I had no time to remove the board completly and check the back.
Maybe you can ask your repair shop guy what he did to fix it? Thanks.

I took it to a couple of guys in downtown Athens and none said they wanna take a look at an Elephone. And these were techie Asian guys lol. Let me know if you find anything via pm or through here. Thanks. I'll keep looking myself otherwise I'll buy bluetooth headphones.
the problem with bluetooth headphones is that Elephone set the Bluetooth A2DP Bitpool to 35 (basically means compressed data = better range and quicker transfer rate ) which results in terrible sound quality over Bluetooth audio.
I'm not an audiophile but I can't listen to music over bluetooth in my car like I used to with my previous device, it sounds horrible.
This is a software issue but it can't be fixed with a root app or something like this, it's set in the bluetooth drivers. There is a setting under "Sounds & Notifications" called "Lossless BT-Mode", but it does nothing... or not enough, I'm not sure. The Bitpool needs to be raised to 52 or higher for "lossless" mp3 playback.
I wouldn't have bought this phone if I had known this...
UPDATE: I fixed it. This soldering point broke. I didn't solder it, I put a piece of cardboard under the circuit board which presses against the shell. I did this yesterday in the afternoon and used it multiple times since then, it seems to work great.
Put some solder on every point now. That fixed the problems for me, looked like there was no solder there.
Same on my phone >.< seems that the headphone jack has been horribly designed/built then!
The design is excellent, but there are multiple points with no solder on top, just glued or something. That can obviously not work in the long term.. The fix is very easy if you have a soldering iron, you don't need precision tools.

Could you please give us a detailed tutorial on how to open up the elephone?
I've tried it today (got the same problem) and failed on removing the white case from the fingerprint scanner.

I've tried soldering the points today and the connection seems more stable for now.
No more bzzing in idle when using headphones (Teufel Aureol), but the quality still sounds like some bad compressed mp3.
Pushing the plug (display frontfacing) to the back left seems to fix the problem.
I've tried putting cardboard between the 3.5mm port and the casing of the phone but no luck.
When using in-ears (some cheap philips) there is still a semi-loud bzzing in the backgroud and since the cable goes sideways there is no way of getting a stable connction.
Did I do faulty soldering or might I've broken the port with the soldering iron?

i'm in the business too, since two days, bought a bt dongle, with eragon rom no bad sound issue, but the asycronious in videos of sound and lips movement is bad, so i have to solder...i need an iron, tomorrow i will try, i hope i will fix it. what about warranty??

I had the problem that the right in ear speaker didn't work but the left one was okay. But after some time even the left got worse and wasn't usable anymore.
Then I opened the Elephone and soldered the parts of the audio jack (like in the picture above).
It improved the audio quality but it still works only for the left speaker. How do I get both working?

I'm facing the same issue, soldered all the contacts and then only left is working.

Unfortunately it is still the same.
Well looks like im sticking to bluetooth headphones, was hoping someone would confirm the soldering would fix it.
