[REQUEST] International speaking forum sections. - About xda-developers.com

This message is for the owner and administrators of this site/forum.
By looking at the recent discussions in some forum sections and sadly see people leaving this place, complaining, giving bad feedbacks around other places, and even create new forums by their own, I kindly ask you to value the option to create a few specific International forum sections for non-english speaking users, who would like to share their opinions, cookings, etc... without the need to face anymore "english language only" problems. I ask this, because there seems to be a lot of confusion about this, especially by Italian users, as I am.
As I think this forum has been always the leading one, in matter of handheld device development, I think it is also in your interest to earn new users and never to lose anyone of current ones. I am not asking you to create 100 new sections, Just a few separate sections named for example: "German Forum" , "Italian Forum" , "Spanish & Portuguese" and so on.... just for the main languages, which are no more than 7-8... even less. Many of the most popular forums I know did this already, and inside this one, I think it's even more important.
So please, if you can, take some time to think about this request, or otherwise just reject it and explain why and what it stops you from doing that.
Regards
10th July: POLL added. Feel free to submit your vote.

Well, it seems no one has interest in this...
very nice...

Unless you'd have a Moderator for each different language with the task to pass new findings and developments to the "International" section, i don't see any benefit in it. In fact i think the rules should be more restrictive regarding the languages used in forum messages by demanding the translation to english! I do understand languages other than my own but would like to know what Turkish, Germans or other are saying (even if it brings nothing new to my knowledge)
Just 2 cents

I know what you mean,
but in my idea local language speaking forums would be just minor general forums (where you won't find exclusive informations) made mainly to help such users who can't speak and understand english without the need to warn them to use english language only. And I think there are a lot of users who come to this site just to find links and download cooked roms and patches, and sometimes happens that they ruin their handheld just because they didn't understand completely what they downloaded and its instructions.
Of course it's clear that every language section will have a moderator/s, which would be a trusted user (who knows the local forum language) who can moderate the section in the same way and with same rules as the english ones (there will be a sticky post with the rules translated in local language).
I think all this can only bring a positive effect over this forum.
Anyway, I just added a poll for this matter... everyone feel free to vote!

German Artemis ROM cooking site

Hi guys,
I had the idea to start a dedicated site about ROM cooking with a focus on INFORMATION. I splitted the page into two areas German and English / international.
Here the links:
http://www.artemis-project.com Main site, only for language selection
http://ger.artemis.project.com German site
http://wwe.artemis.project.com English site
The German page is already running, I invite all of you German speaking guys that have experience with ROMs, hacking the registry, design and whatever is useful for ROM cooking to help us build up that site.
Our focus will be on creating tutorials and cooking ROMs. We will create tutorials with detailed information and pictures that help everyone to understand the whole process better and enable the less experienced guys to cook your own ROMs too.
For the beginning I ask only the more experienced people to participate since we will have a better start. Don't think you are not welcome but we can't explain you everything from the beginning. If you have a few years of computer experience, know how to edit the registry or are good at designing graphics then you got the skills to help us.
You'd need to work a lot on your own, try out a lot of things and document them is such a way that we all can understand it so we can talk about it afterwards to evaluate. I hope that didn't sound too professional
As I already said, this site is going to be much more about information, I don't want to split up this nice community! But we are going to be stricter on forum rules: No double posts, double questions and so on. There won't be a single thread that will have 1000 postings!
There will also be almost no request for including programs into the ROM, we want the people to be able to do that themselves. If it is an extra cool application we didn't know yet we will use it of course !
Questions and answers about a ROM will be in a FAQ as soon as they are solved. The posts from the forum will be erased and in the FAQ there will be mentioned who found the solution.
As soon as we have a good and stable ROM or some extraordinary news about a very hot topic we will share it with this comminity of course.
So if there are 10-20 German talking guys I'd be happy to work with you together on a ROM that rocks
Sebastian
PS:
The english page is there but won't be used until there really is a need for. So please don't register right now on the English page.

Request for feature change on this XDA-Dev Website

Hi,
I've been using the forum for a while, but I still have problems searching, and I would like to propose a couple of new features.
These features are based on a new user using the forum, and not from the perspective of a very experienced user.
SEARCH
1.
A brief help feature please, particularly of syntax terms and examples.
example: How do you search for the phrase 'Enable block recogniser' only.
Maybe there are other search operators that I do not know about. The point is that I want to search without lots of hits.
It may be that others will reply to this thread with the search terms - however that's not the point. It's where can I find out? Without asking administrators or bothering senior members.
2. Please add 'How to search' and any other common user requests (or common user **** ups you know about) to the FAQ.
It's where I would look. If that is the wrong place, please put a link from the FAQ to the right place as you have done.
I just love this site.
Please give someone some praise feedback...."Well done... it's really good, not just in the short term but in the long term".
A VERY useful, friendly site, well designed, and well manned for the average person's use.
Thanks
A

Forum Layout

Hi,
I've recently got a Touch Diamond and have found certain aspects of this forum helpful however I can't help but feel that this place has an appauling forum layout.
Are you afraid of creating some sub-sections or something? I mean seriously, what's the point of all the square bracket tags on the start of topic titles?
They don't make it easier to find because the topics are still jumbled up with all the others anyway and a good topic title should let you know what it is related to in the first place. I thought that maybe at least a search for a certain tag would reveal all of those topics but alas no, the search gave me no results at all even though I can see them on the screen in the forum listing it still doesn't find them.
Take the Diamond themes, apps & s/w section for example...
Why not simply create a sub-section for related topics such as Themes and hence have all theme topics together and do away with the need for tagging the titles.
Sorry to criticise your forum but I just don't see the logic in the current system as it makes things very difficult to find, especially when the search tells me there are no results containing [THM] or 1.93 etc.
Thanks for the reply regarding the search, hopefully I'll be able to find a little more of what I'm looking for now.
I've come across plenty of forums that don't allow searches for less than 4 characters but surely [THM] is 5 characters
Anyway, that's not my main point, I just think that the forum ingeneral would be friendlier to browse and need less searching if it was better organised to begin with.
Thanks again for the reply and nice little site overview
I agree that a good forum is run in a manner that keeps the members happy though it should also be as user friendly as possible. There are always people who prefer to avoid change but they will quickly get used to changes if they are for the better.
I'm a forum SuperModerator myself and my advise is that a clear layout helps a lot with finding info, where to post questions and also getting replies for those questions as topics don't get swapmed like they do in one large general section.
As for mods being unloved I would say that depends on how much of a presence they have in the forum, invisible mods are unloved because they are unknown with no personality but if your mods are active forum members they will be known and more respected as well as being someone people can go to if problems arise.
lol, sorry I didn't meant to launch into a forum moderation tutorial there

Thread-specific moderators (for ROM threads)

Hello,
first thanks for this great place! I would have smashed my Touch HD if xda wouldnt exist
I have a suggestion regarding the ROM forums and threads:
As the cookers and chefs are mostly to busy to gather information from the thread and put them in the first(second...) post, it would be really nice if a threadstarter or moderator could assign a normal user as an "thread-specific" moderator (for only the first three posts for example). So volunteers, people very interested in this ROM, could maintain a buglist, tips and hints, fixes and other helpful stuff from the thousand and more pages and make the life for everybody easier.
Its sometimes really hard to find information in the thousand pages. I think a solution like this would help everybody and reduce the senseless spam questions in the ROM forums. All 1-2 pages new users ask the same as people before, and all are getting the answer "Read through the thread, its mentioned 10 pages before" for example.
Whats your opinion about this?

Hi,
1. I don't think this is possible with the standard vB software. And I know the webmasters are adversed to applying "patches" unless they really help.
2. There is a problem of trust. Moderators are selected on here to be trustworthy, not to carry out malicious activities and to always be fair. I've seen plenty of people on here become friends and then enimies as quick as they can. Giving many users complete control over a single thread could become problematic. If you're just speaking about allowing users to edit another users thread. I can't see that been too risky - but still Impractical with the forum software.
An alternative, If the ROM cook would like someone to help manage the thread, they should arange before hand to let someone bag a few posts on the thread when it's first started (I know its not practical to existing threads). Moderators can help add posts when needed and remove any
pesky "First" messages someone might inject in the way .
Just my thoughts

Yes you are absolutly right, good idea
It would be enough if the moderators could move a post of the "Useful thread stuff Collecter / Maintainer" at the second or third position of an existing ROM thread, or if the creator already plans it when creating the thread. That would be exact the same without editing the board software or applying hacks...

Well if it's not possible to arrange this beforehand by timing a the time of thread creation, you could indeed ask on of the mods to help you out there. Don't look at me yet though, haven't figured that one out yet
