Recommended ROM for us Canucks? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

I know there are some ROMs out there optimized for AT&T, etc. What do you guys recommend for us Canadians using Rogers? Anyone else on here on the Rogers network? And what ROM are you using? I also need BBConnect to be functional too. I'm so undecided on which to use... I'm still on WM5 at the moment. Thanks.

I use Black Majik (bbconnect version) with Radio 1.43 on Rogers with no problems.

Hi.
I live in Austin. I have both ROGERS and T-mobile. I use, on my TyTN, Elf Mobile 6 Edition. I just switch out the SIM cards. When I visited Vancouver in March, it worked great (I am not Canadian but I have a Canadian number since I normally spend 3 to 6 months a year in Vancouver).
Custel also works well.

Yes, I'm using Elf 2.1 as well, in Toronto. So far so good

Try them all.
Use the one that fit your needs best!!!
If you are undecided, then you are not ready and I would suggest that you do not bother.
In any case, make sure your pda is CID and provider unlocked. Good Luck when you are ready to jump in!

i am a noob so don't flame me for asking this but how do you know which radio version you are using

Start->Settings->System Tab->Device Information.

I'm currently using Sleuth's v3.1 Crackberry ROM and am extremely happy with it!
Lurch has created a cab file with all of the Rogers settings in it which you can run after flashing your ROM.

fast, reliable, best combination of ROM and Radio yet.
Started with the official AT&T 2.15 radio 1.40.30 (WM5... yuck)
Tried a couple of versions of Black, got bored with the number of resets and the number of programs that it didnt like. Very slick look, but very experimental.
The elf did a great job for a while
LVSW was my choice till the official AT&T WM6 ROM came out and VP3G put it on a diet and killed off all that useless junk.
It finally works the way I expect it to, the first Windows Mobile (CE) device I have ever owned that does so.
One trick.... I have consistently noticed that, with all my various Windows Mobile devices I have owned, the stability is better with less junk on the today screen. I now run just the date, Live Search and Pocket Informant plug-ins.
Also, dont forget to do the activesync fake server fix and kill off the nasty activesync whenever it starts up unwanted.
Radio Change:
Droped calls with the 1.48 radio and it wouldnt find service for over 5 minutes. I've just flashed to the 1.43 radio and will report

EXPERINCES with Different ROMs (Imate, O2, orange, Qtek etc.

Hi guys!
Just a thougt and input from everybody after exposure of variety of ROMs.
How is individual's experience with his favourite rom and why and what does he feels about other roms.
Let's start
I have experienced Imate, Orange, Qtek, O2 and latestly Dopod ROMs and found
Imate as standard
Qtek as little fast
Orange as TURTLE even in this new environment
O2 as stable
Dopod currently using.
what's your experence???????????
My personal experience -
Dopod - using now. Stable and fast wake-up.
O2 - rate it the same as Dopod.
Qtek - slightly faster but somehow, it hanged more often vs. Dopod and O2.
Imate - the base but most stability issues for me comparing to above.
would you mind giving the version numbers u used. I cant figure out with ones to use!
Dopod - very happy with it, also on the Wizard
could someone point me to a link for the dopod 900 rom? I would be very thankful!

Well, ever since got my exec 1 week ago, been crashing in on 3 Roms so far.
Qtek - Currently using, no hang so far.
O2 - Slightly slower compared to Dopod and Qtek.
Dopod - Stable.
I have tried the Jasjar, O2, and QTEC ROMs. I prefer the QTEC ROM because it has both A2DP and AKU2 support. I have been using it for more than a month, no crashes, all is working fine, and stable on my O2 Exec.
I believe any type of hanging in any ROM is due to a 3rd party app that you have installed. As long as you can sort it out, then it will work as you expected.
Does the new Dopod ROM have both A2DP and AKU2 support?

Nope, hence i am hanging on e qtek on my exec
Flashed my out-of-date Vodafone ROM with the latest i-mate WWE ROM with the latest radio ROM. The i-mate ROM is quite handy as it sets up the GPRS and MMS settings for you after a fresh flashing. Very stable too!
I am totally agree with ctklcmd.
All ROMs are almost the same.
No speed differences. It depends just for your moods and 3rd party apps using. With stability is the same opinion.
I tried all of ROMs with all of RadioROMs.
Almost - if not totally - the same the last ones.
Differences are usually in extendedRoms.
Biggest help would be another 64MB RAM.
It is the main fuc*ed up thing in Universal.

Dopod and Qtek almost same , very fast , as I know Dopod had share with Qtek same as HTC had share with Dopod , so you think HTC will not make good rom for Dopod and Qtek ?
I tried a lot.. I noticed a difference in
Radio 1.11 - Bluetooth headset seemed to sound better
My MDA is at the shop, so I dont knwo the other ROMs I am using.
I know I mixed and am running the latest T-mobile Extended Rom, but the latest Windows ROM.
What I notice a real difference with are the bundled programs in teh extended ROM.
The current T-Mobile Extended ROM (I Think its the T-mobile one), has Voice Commander that I didnt have in other ROMS. So it can take voice commands to dial which I think is cool, its not overly accurate and in my car I have to almost scream to get it right.. but if your by yourself in the car, screaming the numbers is safer than trying to dial.
Does anyone have a list of which ROMs have which programs?
BTW. while I am at it.. what the heck is Enroller? Does anyone have a list of the useless programs we can safely delete if we unlock the Extended ROM.
I dont want to go messing with the unlocking the ROM and screwing up something to reinstall but I would love to get some programs from some ROMS I have tried and put them in better ROMs.
I.E. I dont want to lose Voice Commander, but know I have only seen it on one or two ROMS. so if I could save it to my computer and reinstall it on a ROM without it that would be great.
Dopod 900... hmmmmm.
Is that an english version? I thought dopod roms are chinese or something like that
ALSO does it have both aku2 and a2dp? is pdf reader included. I am rightnowon the latest qtek rom and was under the impression that on my dutch mda pro I should only install the european roms as they are wwe.
thanx in advance

Just to know.
Pdf reader, voice command utility, enroller... are not in the ExtendedROM but there are shortcuts there for them.
Whole programs are Skype and an antivirus software which are few Megs. Most of the .cab files in the ExtendedROM are just some kB-s. Those cannot be a pdf-reader program or a voice commander which need megabytes. Secondly it is not just "it cannot be" but it is not. I looked in all of the cabfiles. Most of them are just shortcuts and registry values.

Installing Roms
How do I install .nbf files ?
I am sorry if this is a dumb question, really need to upgrade radio and extended rom.
Thanks

Please, please WM6 with working Blackberry Connect

I realize that BBC is very low on most people wish list here but until our company upgrades to Exchange 2007 later this year, I am forced to use the Blackberry Connect client if I am to carry my preciouse 8525 instead of a blackberry. I just got the BBC working on WM5 in 3G and am thrilled. However, having tasted the great WM6 Roms here, I must have it!
Does anyone have a good WM6 rom that the Blackberry Connect client actually works on without having to hack the OS? I'm fairly technical since I manage our IT facility and can reg edit, etc, but I don't feel too comfortable with the OS hacking I've seen in some threads to make the BBC client work. I am almost sure I'd brick my device.
If anyone could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful. Thanks for your time. - EH
BB Connect works fines for me.
First post, but have been reading the boards and enjoying the benefits for months.
I'm using the radio that was released with the Cingular 2.06 ROM, but it might work with others. I didn't have to do any OS tweaking. I just installed the Desktop Activesync program and the BB Connect for WM6 that came with WMXL v0.20 and everything worked. Of course, I called Cingular and had them change my data plan to the PDA Connect for BB Connect Unlimited.
So excuse my ignorance but I haven't been able to find this. You are using a radio version not included in the WMXL .20 rom? How do you keep your orignial rom? Oh, and thanks for the quick repoonse.

easy... you cook a Radio ONLY upgrade using Dutty's NBHTOOL1.0... you can find the thread by using the find function or reading the wiki...
WMXL v0.20 doesn't come with a radio upgrade. Using the Wiki, you can find the available radio upgrades, of which mine is one of them. Just flash the OS and the radio independently.

If you don't feel confortable I would say don't use any of these WM6 updates since NONE are official.
But if you want WM6.. Why not use WM XDA Live .20.
It's got the OS # changle already done to allow BBC..
(At least as far as I know.. I don't use it...)

So let me see if I have have this correctly. I if I use the WMXL .20 rom, it will not change the radios? I will have the same radio verison after the upgrade or will need in reinstall the radios as well? Forgive my ignorace. I just want to make sure I have the right Cingular radio version to keep the Blackberry Connect going.

only the OS will be changed. the rest u leave alone and will remain as was before an OS upgrade.
Depending on what you have now you probably want to upgrade the radio.
Not only will get better data connections as well as less problems.
But some WM6 things like the connection Icons require radio 1.27 or higher to work properly.
Ok. Thanks guys. I'll give that a go. The only concern I had was using a radio or OS version that locked out BBC. I have read the other users lost BBC connectivity after upgrading their OS to WM6. I would like to use the lastest radio versions for the improvment as long as they don't kill my BBC.
Thanks again for all of your responses.

I am running WM6 v.21 and my radio, etc. is as in my sig. BBConnect was (briefly) an issue with WM6 on v.1, but since the update to .21 and the hacked BBConnect (also listed on the initial post) it works a treat.
Hope this helps - feel free to PM if you have any questions

Thanks! Can you tell me what you mean by the "hacked BBConnect"?
@EH - sorry, I mean v.21 is hacked for BBConnect.
I run BBConnect client 2.1.2.31, but I also believe you can run .52 (someone correct me?). I had to dig around for .31 (.exe file, got it on local PC, so could email) but you can get .52 from the FTP on here.
Here's a link to a BBConnect thread that may help:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294218
Ok. Cool. Could you email that to me? I am running .52 but it won't start. Also, I assume by v.21 you are using the WMXL v.21 or am I off on that? My email is [email protected]. Thanks again for your help.
I am also using BBConnect client v 2.1.2.31, works like a charm.
Well, I guess I'm beat. I have installed:
WXML v.20
Radio: 1.33.31.00
Rom Version: 3.22.110.1
Can't get it to work. :-(
Jakirkla: What version of BBConnect are you using?
Ok. I'm just freaking excited now! I did this reg edit that I found posted in another thread. It was in the LSVW build but I used it on the WMXL build and it worked. Not only that, but previously, my BBC would disconnect while I used the web, messaging, etc. And I had to wait awhile for the BBC to reconnect after the browsing was done. NOW, however, they are running simulatinously over the 3G network. The BBC icon stay completed connected and I receive mail WHILE web surfing. This was what I did.
Changed HKLM\System\Versions and edit the Aku string from .0.0.0 to .2.3.0
Restarted Hermes (holding power button)
Installed BBC 2.1.2.54
Install Blackberry Desktop 2.1.1.21 (for BES users)
Forgive me if this is old news but I haven't seen or heard of this working before. I'm so excited that I can seem to have BOTH services running now and on WM6. I'd like to thank everyone again for their reponses.
Hermes exclusive???
Hi man,
The ability to use both BB service and browse the internet is exclusive on the Hermes (because of HW capabilities) or can it be done in other PPCs?
I had never heard of such a thing until now!!! I am impressed...

HAve you looked in the extras section for WMXL?? There is a version of BBC in there, I dont use it so im not sure if it will work but that is the one most people are using in WMXL, as said before the CE build version in WMXL v0.2.x was modded to allow for BBC to work?!

How To run BBCONNECT 4 with WW6

Hi all
I would like to known the more simple and shure way to make BBconnect 4 up and running with WM6.
My TYTN running actualy the Schap's ROM version 3.57a.
please HELP ME.
HTC TYTN
ROM Schap's 3.57a
radio 1.48.00.00
Protocol 32.81.70.20.20W
CE OS 5.2.1437 (Build 17944.0.3.1)
Ask Schap nicely to hex edit his Rom so it works with BB Connect.......otherwise use Slueth's Rom which already works with BB Connect.
I've been quite happy using Slueth's Rom and have no complaints!

vp3G and Sleuth both have BBC version. I can post links for Schap and Black Satin tonight. But if you are comfortable with entry level hacking - it is a trivial job to make any ROM based on latest official ATT or Dopod releases to be compatible with BBC on Hermes. There was a lot of discussions and questions answered here on this subject last few days if you'll desire to know more and "Howto". Regards

Hi Khristopher
I too am trying to get Blackberry working reliably on my xda Trion. I'm running Custels WM6 2.5 ROM thats blackberry enabled, along with 2.x.x.54 blackberry client for the Trion and the 1.41 radio
Problem I have is that when I invoke flight mode and then switch radio back on, my blackberry app is off line and I cannot get it to reconnect without first disablling it, then doing a soft reset, then relaunching blackberry. It then repairs the settings and goes on to connect and its back up and running All a bit of a pain! I tried the 4.x.x. client, but it has the security feature set on the server such that after 10 mins inactive, it locks the screen and needs a password to unlock the device.
Are you having similar problems with the sleth ROM? If not, could you post the rest of your ROM/RADIO/BB Client config? If you are using the 4.x.x BB client, have you found a way of disabling the device lock?
Many thanks
Chris

Custel ... that's I'd say 2-3 major updates step back. I haven't tested Custel's ROMs, but correct me if I'm wrong it is a LVSW or Black 3.01 derivative. Neither one had any issues with BBC re-connecting. As a matter of fact, from my personal experience, BBC will make *any* connection drop in a blink of an eye and will happily monopolize your data connection, making it almost impossible to have automated POP, RSS or Podcasts collections. I'd say your first step should be backup, hard reset and restore if you are keen to the existing ROM. Then I'd say you want to update to the latest distro and radio. Hope this helps.

Hi Moisha
Many thanks for this, very helpful. I'm not wedded to the ROM by any means, so would happily change to a combo that kept a reliable connection. By 'the latest distro', do you mean one of the WM6 ROMs or release of the BB client? I see you are using the 1.48 radio.. What would be your recco for a BB compatible ROM and radio. Not sure I want to get into hex editing at the moment, so would like to use one one the 'off the (xdadevelopers) shelf' ROMs if poss...?
Thanks much in advance

Noob questions (so many of us)

I've had search on the forums, but have questions i can find the answer to.
I'm a PC tweaker and overclocker. I fancy doing the same with my phone. more out of curiosity then any real need.
MDA Compact 3 (tmobile)
Most used app is tomtom.
I've found the how to bit, and understand the the getting "CID unlocked" then doing the rom flash.
My main questions are.
Once flashed, is there much needed to be done to get it back on the network? ( buggered about on a mobi a while ago and getting it back on the network took ages)
What are the main benefits of upgrading?
I've seen the touchflo demo on youtube and know you can get roms for my phone. what is the best one for my phone/network?
And what the most stable one?
what would be a good rom for some one who install/uninstall lots of app and generally like to poke around, but really only uses it as a phone and gps?
Cheers for any pointers/help
Hi Megabite,
What do you mean with network?
The Network of your telco of your home network?
The best rom for MDA Compact is B&B 4.0 with touch flo.
GPS is working fine
But 4.1 is coming with the latest OS.
And the camera is also fixed. So just wait until released.
The rom is in beta testing
Thanks for the reply.
I meant network as in my telco, as in t-mobile UK.
So just to clarify, touchflow is the user interface that "sits" on windows mobile version 6 (or wm v5) or is it a seperate user interface?
and any date for the realse of 4.1
No, no network problems, you'll just have to run the network wizard to auto configure the gprs internet stuff.
The touchflo cube is just a pretty app that sits on top of the OS - it's ok, but I find the fact that the touchflo driver allows you to scroll up/down in lists and docs a lot more useful.
As far as 4.1 coming out, it comes out when Tom and his testers think its ready - no ETA yet from what I've seen
The Touchflo cube is an interface for accessing some commonly used programs, contacts etc, Touchflo also allows you to scroll using finger movements in other apps, eg internet explorer.
If you do upgrade to a WM6 rom the benefits are a more stable OS & HTML email amongst other things. Tmobile have stated that they will not be releasing a WM6 ROM for the MDA C3 so if you do want to upgrade you will have to use another carriers rom or a cooked rom. There are 2 official roms available, O2 UK and Dopod SEA, both are WWE (English). I use Tom's B&B v4.0 rom as it looks and feels the best and doesn't have any operator rubbish in it. In order to upgrade your rom to WM6 you will first need to CID (Carrier ID) unlock it as you have already discovered.
It is very easy to put the tmobile uk settings back in, there are plenty of cab files in this forum or the settings can be found on the web. If you really can't find them I have a cab file somewhere I can send you.
Regarding a release date for Toms B&B v4.1, Tom produces these roms as a hobby not a job, therefore you won't get a release date, just the rom when it is ready!

T-Mobile USA with Hermes (HTC 8525). ROM request.

I just divorced my MDA after 2 years. Last updated it with the awesome "XM6r5" ROM a few weeks ago*. Great built-in utilities, memory usage, etc. Unfortunately, the processor was too slow.
I have now upgraded to an unlocked (ATT branded) Hermes, and need to find a solid ROM (and radio ROM if suggested) for T-Mobile USA. I spent the past two hours reading the forums on xda and HowardForums for an answer, but did not find one.
If there is a thread that I missed, please let me know. Ideally, someone would post a link and/or identify a specific ROM. Having such a great experience with a cooked ROM on my prior HTC device, I really look forward to having a productive, more powerful device again.
Thanks in advance everyone.
* No, the XM6r5 ROM will not work on the Hermes. I already asked the developer.
There's no T-Mobile branded ROM for the 8525/TyTN...
Fortunately, you don't need it.
Setting the device up to use T-Mobile is trivial-T-Mobile's website has the details.
Is there something T-Mobile specific you need?
All the cooked OS Roms should work with any carrier. But Radio could make a difference...I recommend 1.47 for t-mob US.
I've had no problems with either Schaps 4.31, Shamanix 6 Ultimate 2.0 or CRC's winmo 6.1 version 9.2. I use radio 1.54.07.00 without any problems on T-Mobile USA. The only problem with Schaps and Shamanix roms are that it doesn't come with the Network Config app but that's pretty easy to find, just search for HTC Network Config.
LOVE the CRC 9.2 WM 6.1 ROM
I am using an AT&T 8525 (Posting this comment on it now). I have an AT&T plan, but tested my friends T-Mobile SIM in it yesterday just for fun. The CRC 9.2 WM 6.1 ROM has the network configurator in it. I ran the auto config wizard, had to restart and I was up and running no problems. I use that ROM because it has everything i want, and funs super fast. I upgraded my radio to 1.54.30.10, defintely recomend that, i had issues with the stock AT&T WM 6.0 ROM radio with WM 6.1. I found the radio update in someones signature in the CRC ROM thread.
Hope that helps!
Will try ...
Now I have a project over the next few hours (or days). Thanks so much for the suggestions.
Thanks
The title says it all. So far so good.
SIM & CID Unlocker v3a works well.
CRC 9.2 works well.
Radio ROM 1.54.07 works well.
No keyboard fix required.
T-Mobile specific settings seem to work.
Thanks wazmo, galaxys, tonokeemon and quarlow for pointing me in the right direction.
Ringtone
Oh, and I got a big kick out of the default ringtone (i.e. close encounters)!
Keyboard fix was required
Turns out the keyboard fix (XML) was required.
Network Configurator application
Twice experienced the need to run the built in network configurator after a (test) reset. That seems odd, and if it keeps happening I will manually enter the settings. If that does not "fix" it, I will need to change the ROM.
Otherwise, still happy.
That problem never happened to me, but in the ROM post someone mentioned that. they said when you disable the automatic part of the network configuration wizard that fixed the problem. When you open the wizard, before it starts you have a menu the right soft key pulls a menu, uncheck enable auto configuration.
That should do it
Network settings now fixed
Thanks quarlow, I had forgotten about that. Settings have been constant for a day without any problems since your reminder.
Also added the Ringer Vibrate (CAB) switch v1.32. Works very well.
Will probably add Opera and TCPMP later today.
It seems that CRC 9.2 WM 6.1 ROM is "lite". No games ... at all. Very good for business, but not for downtime. I will probably keep it simple for another week, and until my new MicroSD card is delivered. ($20.39 for delivery of an A-DATA 4GB MicroSDHC and Card Adapter from supermediastore.com - solid deal).
QuickMenu 2.7
Added QuickMenu 2.7 and the result is a mini, very-efficient desktop experience.

CRC has a addon cab with the games, in the first post of his stable thread, or somewhere close.
And 9.2 is quite and old rom now, you might want to try 11.2 which is newer and very stable.

Try my rom in my signature, I'll be updating it in the next week also. For me, it runs nice.. The other chef's around here have great skills in optimizing their builds... Give them a try, FLASH FLASH, and find the one you like.
