I have radio problems (I think), I'm delighted with my ROM in general...BUT when i make phone calls the call quality drops off terribly after about 2 mins (the other caller can hear me but I cant hear them - at all!) Just a nightmare.
Am I imagining this or is this a known problem ?
Do I have to go and get a Nokia ?
LVSW (is this right? you know the one) here is what device manager says..
3.30.2.1
04/17/07
radio 1.40.30.0
check here for the available radio roms,
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_ExtractedRadioRoms
just try afew and see which works, from my experience clarity of call is dependant on 2 things mainly, ROM and Carrier, you will see on the Radio ROM page there are ones specific to carriers, others arent.
Personally i have had bad experiences with radio 1.41 on Sleuths last varient, changed to 1.43 no probs, flashed to Black Shadow and it seems that any Radio i try has problems on this ROM.
Try some!!! i hope this helps!!!!
The choice is between 1.40 and 1.43, dependant on your provider!!
it a little known fact that 1.43.00.00 is for UK netowrks and 1.40.30.00 is for cingular so its best for just trying each one and see what works best. for me I can tell no difference between the two so I just stick with 1.43.00.00 biggest factor is how it holds signal and bettery life
I went from 1.41 to 1.40 when I was thinking about upgrading to 1.43. The battery life on 1.40 is so much better with my Cingular phone in California.
well i flashes 1.43 - will see how it goes ! ta.

Ditto in SF. I tried 1.41 and my battery drained so fast that Mr. Einstein had to be reincarnated to rewrite the general laws of relativity...

I'm on 1.43 right now on cingular in austin, tx and all is well!

Ok, I've tried a few ROMs, and am currently using Helmi's AKU3.5 v1.3.1, which I think is great, apart from the fact I'm not enjoying great stability on the phone front with either radio ROM v1.14.x and v1.13.
I know that the latest O2 ROM wasn't 100% stable on the phone front, so I know I can't expect miracles, but are people experiencing good stability with any of the AKU3.2/3.3 ROMs or the latest Helmi WM6 ROM? I have already tried one of the WM6 ROMs (Infadel) and didn't find that very stable at all.
Just to be clear, stability issues on the phone front, from my point of view are:
1. Ability to pick up a call without it automatically dropping the call.
2. Good GPRS/3G connectivity, with stable cell handover.
3. Ability to start/stop the phone service predictably.
If people are using a new ROM combination that aren't experiencing those issues, then please let me know.
Cheers,
Steve.
What you ask is also highly dependant on your operator.
On Orange, my device drops data connections, and sometimes requires a soft reset to get it back, on t-mobile, it is almost totally reliable.
Waiting for my replacement "3" SIM to see what that's like.

Ok, that's a promising start for me, as I'm running on T-Mobile. So what combination of OS and Radio ROMs are you running?
Cheers,
Steve.
I recently upgraded from a BA to a Uni & was dissapointed with the radio coverage. I live in a patchy area for reception but was finding my Uni was dropping signal where my BA would work OK.
After playing around with lots of radio roms I found 1.09 to work best for me on Vodafone UK. I found anything newer than that much too 'twitchy' and would scan for network all the time.
I think you just need to play around and see what happens.....
(BTW I'm running a stock AKU2 rom with an empty extrom. Had a quick play with CB & AKU3.x, but I want stabability rather than features).

I agree that the actual radio hardware in the phone is pants - very frequently get no signal where other phones on the same network (I can even swap my SIM) get signal, no problem. I guess you've just got to accept that the Universal is a hybrid, and it's more of a PDA than it is a good phone, but I still love it...
I'm considering returning to an AKU2 ROM, but would love to have similar stability with a newer ROM.
Cheers,
Steve.
Hi all,
I'm looking to hear from people who are running WM6 Preferably on the US Cingular network.
I've read that 1.38 gives the best mix of battery and phone function.
To me, having a usable phone that doesn't drop calls but also does not suck down the battery in a day is the most optimum choice.
I am currently running 1.41 Radio, (I'm a sucker for anything new) and my battery seems to not last like it used to. I have an 8525/Hermes
Although it is my own personal phone, I do use it alot for work and can't afford to be dropping calls. I don't have anything against testing different radio versions, but was looking for people to share their experiences.
The list I have found of available Radio Roms is as follows.
1.07.0310
1.27.00.00
1.35.00.11
1.38.00.10
1.38.00.11
1.38.30.10
1.40.30.00
1.41.00.10
well mate... I have 1.41 and I must admit, that I am really impressed... Third day after flash and still 40% of batt. with normal use... (usually 2 days at most)
to early to judge though, but I am 100% sure it's better than on generic t-mob radio.
br
1.40.30.00 is best for me.
I had 1.41 release, but it was not as stable at holding signal.
You should make this a poll.
1.38 on Black 1.2 and I'm a happy camper.
I had 1.38 and switched to 1.40.30.00. My battery life is MUCH better. I have a cingular 8525.
Thanks to all so far for the replies. I have added the list of available Hermes roms to my first post. I did this after creating a Poll that was quite limited. Does anyone know how to change the Poll once it was created?
For me, 1.40 is more stable than 1.41 ... on 1.41 in (oakland, ca) I was having dropped calls on the transistion from 3G to GSM ... my perception is that 1.40 handles the transistion better.
1.40, I went almost two full days and only dropped to 30%. Im active with email/txt and light web browsing.
CUSTEL had written that he had gotten the best life from 1.34. I went to that from 1.41 and the battery life is much better.
it helps if you list all of the radios in the poll..... 1.34
I updated from the 140 to the 141 radio and I do not notice any difference in battery life but I do notice that I have better reception and places that I would drop calls at now I do not lose any. .... I do not know if it is a radio issue or not but my Wi-Fi takes forever, as when I was running the 140 it was fine, I have changed 3 roms times while running the 140 and 2 times with the 141 and noticed the Wi-Fi problem with 141 and running 2.5 but I never use it and have an unlimited plan with cingular so it does not matter to me.
tons of issues on 1.41 for me. I had 1.40 but i guess i d/led one of the wrong custom rom packages and jsut checked and i got 1.41. Sigal cuts in an out horribly. And my net connections always drops. modem disconnected errors on connecting, Going back to 1.40 to ensure that was the root of my problem
no issues here so far on 1.41.. when loading a radio on put the radio on 1st then put your new OS on there it makes it work better
this poll sucks...

hahaha, actually this thread might be the first good thing (in my perspective) that a noobs done since they stopped peeing against the wind.
I first started noticing dropped calls on 1.40.30, so i'm just enjoying this. People are giving 1.41 the royal blessing and others are bashing it to hell. I'm about to update to 1.41 to see if it helps me out. If it doesn't get my royal blessing then i'm going back to 1.38
No ofense TBCOMP! you may not be a noob, but its a noobish post.
Hehehe. @custel
I want to change my vote! I voated 1.41, but i'm reverting back to 1.40. or even 1.38.
You don't have 1.34 on your list, but that's what I'm using. I've been using it since day one. Don't fix what ain't broke, I always say.
I used push-mail with WM5 and had ****ty battery life (around 30-40% at the end of the day), but if I don't use push-mail (and I'm using WM6 - Custel 1.2), I am still at 90% by the end of the workday.
.:Christian:.
Cingular User & 1.41
I've been using 1.41 since it was first posted on this site and I haven't had a single problem. Calls are clear, never dropped, Internet / downloads are fast and stable.
I think the problems people are having involve the locations they're using their phones. I'm in Philadelphia PA and this city and surrounding area is wired for Cingular 3G.
http://www.cingular.com/coverageviewer/
Maybe the newer radio is for newly wired areas?
1.40.30 for me in the Austin, TX area. 1.38 just plain sucked for battery life - I don't think you'll find anyone here who had a good experience with that one and battery. 1.40.30 was a dramatic improvement.
1.41 had more of a problem holding a connection for me in NW Austin. YMMV.

Thanks for the great and constructive feedback. If you had read from the beginning, (I've since added to the first post though) I listed only the radio roms that are in the poll, I then found the full listing of the roms that are available for the hermes devices. I also posted, for anyone to answer, how to modify the items in the poll as it is not blaringly obvious to me. I'd be more than happy to add all of the radios to the poll but can't quite figure out how... Thanks.
I apologize and feel bad for feeling like this post is harsh, but if I hadn't seen your name above the post, and recognized your sig, I'd have thought that came from someone who just stumbled upon the boards, Not from the one who's ROM I am currently running.

May be a noobish post, but to aggregate everyone's different opinions on the topic from all of the existing threads is not easy. It makes it even harder when the questions asked/ statements about the topic are usually burried on page 44 of a rom posting thread are sometimes hard to get back to. I didn't state in my first post, I'd be willing to try the ones that people suggest as I have to try to find the time to flash. let alone get stuck with a bad radio rom for a few days in a row if I can't get back to flashing it sometime soon.
Now, does anyone know how to change the poll options once the poll has been created?
I am looking for a really good radio that helps out with the service and battery life?
I'm using 1.50 and it works good for me!
Use search next time!

have a look on my signature below, my history of radio and why did I choose it.
Newest Hermes radio versions 1.54.30.10
Is good...
What you gotta remember is that how well the radio rom works is dependant on your carrier. I can suggest 154.30.10 for Australia cos thats what the telstra network promotes but that may have serious issues with someone from another part of the world causing SHORT battery life, cutout in signal and may cause the "No GSM" error if continued to be used. Check around to see what other people from your area are using and that may be best, even if it is an older radio. This part of the phone is probabaly the most touchy and if you do have a problem (from what I've read) you will probably be looking at a brick. PDA will still work but phone is useless. Upgrade at own risk. Cheers.

Yeh absolutely right !!!
i have 1.54.30.1 is the wifi affect by radio version, this one seems to kill the battery in an hour so
currently use 1.54.30.1 and phone can last a day easily, though generally specking 1.47 - 1.48 lasts longer, will be changing mine soon enough.
Go to here for discussion on signal strengths/battery lifes etc
Connectivity using 1.54.30.10 is great in Switzerland but batterry life is less than 24hours.
Here's a thread where they tested the different radios:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=358933
And here's the link to the 1.47.30.10 radio rom thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=326995) which I've been using with good results on ATT for both voice and data connectivity as well as improved battery life:
Hello
Im using a ROM (dont wanna say which one - dont wanna diss anyone)

Can anyone recommend a simple ROM and good radio that has a battery good battery life, dont need anything fancy
Sounds like you need to update the radio rom

hello there.there are many good roms around here.Personally, im using V12.2 Joshkoss.Im just a big fan of his roms.
as for battery drainage and signal, it mostly has nothing to do with the rom, its from the radio. and each radio depends on the country, state and provider.hope it helped
I am using the latest Radio
Anyone suggest a good radio for South Africa?
here you go my friend

girls,girls,girls......be very careful with all this flashing, its illegal you know....,bit seriously radio roms are not for the faint hearted and a bad flash will brick your device,as in properly bricked.do alot of research, check the wiki and be certain that the change will benifit you before flashing.
some carriers have poor coverage away from major towns and cities and no radio will give good reception in a poor or weak signal area, tou have been warned

three reasons:
1. the latest rom upgrade from orange is 1.16 meaning if u buy a tytn today youll get it with this rom.
2. i upgraded to 1.38 (actually to orange uk official rom to fix big storage problem) then i kept getting a no active data session though it was 3g'd
and some reception problem that i never had.
3. upgraded to 1.54 then to 1.56 some roms showd no problems but some did. downgraded to 1.16 works smooth as shlumi saranga
Hi guys, I'm sure this type of question has been beat to death, but mine is a bit more specific. If I'm not mistaken, different radios will have different performances on different cellphone carrier networks, the one in question here is Rogers Wireless in Canada which I'm on.
I am currently using 1.00.25.05 which I read is pretty good in terms of battery life and everything else. However I'm not too content with this radio because it seems like I've experience a lot more dropped calls since switching to this radio. So my question is, which one is the best for the Rogers network? For me, best means excellent reception and battery life. Thanks in advance.
i have tried all of the latest ones but best by far has been:
1.09.25.23
it does depend on the ROM as well I think and maybe this should have been posted in radio thread
I find 1.09.25.23 to work very well too...I'm in Toronto. Signal is a little inconsistent in some parts of my house...but that's to be expected with lots of new condo buildings popping up in the area...I assume those buildings are affecting signal from the radio towers. Battery life is decent considering I am using the 1000mah Seideo...get's through a full day most of the time with my level of use...4-8 text messages...and about an hour voice.
To me, I tried many recent radio up to 1.12.xx, but I still find that 1.00.25.06 (the default Rogers radio) is the best in terms of reception bars Battery is decent as well.

Toronto area? Also...which ROM? Recently, I've had trouble holding signal with 1.00.25.06 and am not sure why.
I am in Toronto and have never really had a problem with default one either. Maybe I don't know what I am missing but since I have never really had a problem with it I have never changed it. So I am using 1.00.25.06 with the latest Energy ROM.
I just came back from a cruise to Alaska. 1.14. worked very well for me the whole trip. From San Francisco to Alaska then to Victoria. GPS pick up was very quick and phone reception was great even off shore.

Yes...I too realize this stuff could be posted in the radio thread...but consider that on this thread we have Roger's Wireless customers; unless it's not good thing to have a carrier-oriented thread. I understood that radio performance (signal and battery) is most likely influenced by carrier and location. It's difficult in the main radio thread to determine who is a Roger's customer. My 2 cents...
1.00.25.06
I am using the factory radio .. and I have never faced any problems with my calls, reception or GPS (somewhat)....
With GPS there have been times when the fix was delayed by 3-4 minutes. But everything else ... OK
I am sure some members would be able to shed some more light on the perfect combination of ROM + RADIO

I have been using Dutty's 3.6b and 4.0 for the longest time. Recently I have been trying EnergyRom 3, Gen.Y 1.2x, and Shaks 4.3. Not sure if it is ROM related, the signal bar at work is 1 bar less now. Though, it's still going pretty strong. I may try other radio with these new ROMs.

To me it seems the same as 1.12.25.16...one thing i did kinda notice is my device getting a little hot (when using opera, as well as after a soft reset)...not sure if that is a result of the radio or the flashing i have been doin lately...will test a little longer
