Hi folks.
I've busted the screen on my Orbit whilst carrying it in my pocket at work. The glass digitiser beneath the clear plastic cover is cracked and there is a very faint "puddle" of grey ink behind.
I've found a new digitiser on eBay here so I've tried to dismantle the phone. Not having much luck so far apart from removing the 4 case screws at the rear I cannot disassemble the case, Any tips here?
Is the ink puddle in the digitiser part or do I need a new LCD as well? The LCD seems to be working perfectly and the ink mark is barely visible with the backlight on.
Cheers for any advice.
Pete.
Right I've dismantled the phone successfully - just need to be a little braver pulling it apart. The digitiser seems to be bonded to the LCD so I guess I'll have to buy the whole assembly.
Well for anyone who'se interested I managed to remove the digitiser off the LCD with a stanley blade, reassembled the phone and the grey mark on the screen has disappeared, so I'll be buying the digitiser off ebay and fitting that.

Hi, once the four screws are off how did you seperate the items - when I tried the four screws it did not loosen the device at all - I have a pen/wand stuck in my orbit and need to get it out.

True, but apply the force where? I have a habit of breaking these things,,,,,
Hi Jezd.
I started on the bottom corner opposite the stylus holder and once I lifted it a bit jammed my thumbnail in there and just ran it around the joint towards the top. Once it got so hard that I thought I might break something I did the other side. It popped open with a bit of effort.
hey, to go off-topic ever so slightly, the piece with the orange cable coming out of it is the part you actually touch?
i got a scratch on my screen and would like to replace it if its just this piece:
http://cnn.cn/shop/8525tytn-touch-p-87.html
ayuda me, por favor!
That touch screen does not fit the Orbit (and nor does the one I bought). I received my touchpad today and it's different to the one I have removed from my xda, despite the ad saying it was for the orbit.
Does anyone have a photo of an Artemis touch-pad so I can compare?
Here's a pic of the digitizer connections I have. I bought the digitizer from the eBay link above, but it has a different connector to the Orbit screen I have. I think that either they have incorrectly listed the digitizer, or that it actually does fit the Artemis but that the the orbit is shipping with the later screen that comes in the Trinity/P3600. I found a pic somewhere that shows the Trinity digitizer with a similar connector to mine. According to this website the screens are inter-changable so I gather it's quite feasible. Here's how the parts I have are different:

check out e-bay, you can get them cheaply
As above but watch out - there are two types of digitiser for the orbit. One has a ribbon about 8mm wide the other about 4mm wide. Check which one you have before ordering.
Here's the difference, the one I bought was a later-type screen as fitted I think in the Trinity (in fact if your digitiser is this type then you can have this one for free as I have no use for it) :
Cant find!
i can't find nothing for p3300 on ebay!
can you give me a link please?
thank you for the answer!

Broken XDA Orbit screen
Hi,
I've replaced the screen on my Orbit, and I've posted the instructions on another forum.
http://www.modaco.com/Disassemble-XDA-Orbit-t260167.html
Hope this helps, and I used this item off ebay.

Matt
Hi all,
I also broke the screen of my XDA Orbit accidentally and I got this one to replace it:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=260309424816
Then I followed the instructions of this website to mount it:
http://www.formymobile.co.uk/orbitdisassembly.php
The operation went fine and the new display looks good, but now it seems that the phone is getting hot when talking and it runs out of battery very quick! A full charge lasts just for 3-4 hours, which is pretty annoying. I think it might be overheating or something...
Anyone had this problem before? How can I fix this?? Thanks!
Nobody????

Why?
I am not too sure it will fit though as certain corners and angles are different on the O2 device so I guess you could try BUT you might brick the unit and it might not fit - if you wanted a HTC P3300 why did you buy an O2 - Mike

The answer is simple... My housing is in bad condition and I need new one. The only one I found is that one...
I was led to believe that the USB/Multi-plug connecton was in a different position on the Orbit, more to the center than the P3300/Dopod but this photo suggests not.

Actually the Orbit IS different - the USB plug is in a different position to the other versions - 3 or 4 mm difference - which is bloody huge when your trying to force a new case on or whack it into a car holder

I totally believe you.
however the photograph up here suggests it is exacty the same.
I've got a t-mobile MDA compact III and cracked the casing (and screen) and ordered a new one at cnn.cn (casing plus screen) and it worked perfectly.
if you only battered the top or the back part of your phone, the middle part is the one with the usb connector, this might be ok for you to only replace the front or back.
opening your phone:
remove batt cover
remove battery
put something flat in the top of your phone between the front and the top cover. this budges and then take of the top/back part
now you can see all screws (get the right screwdriver!!!) - remove these
remove the back/ middle plate starting at the bottom. top part is a little hustle.
release the connector coming from the front - this is the screen
remove the middle part - there is some adhesive tape between the top and middle plate - start at the bottom and go to the top. the top is locked behind the front so turn the middle part from bottom up like it's joined at the top - then you can remove it.
do not forget to
set over the microphone rubber (bottom)
the vibrate part (front right bottom)
the speaker
the loudspeaker
good luck!

Yes it will fit the xda orbit, but others have just swapped the outer casing, you need to strip the whole phone, by that I mean the vib motor, rear speaker, lcd, the two pcb's etc... also you need a different stylus, the xda orbit has a pointy end when it's inserted into the phone, and the htc one is rounded like the mda compact III.
Hope this helps, PM me if you need advise on taking it apart.....

I can't agree with you more.
Dropped my HTC Touch Pro2 and its cracked the screen!
The actual LCD is fine, and the touch sensitive part still works, but the glass panel that covers the LCD has big cracks running across it.
Anyone know where i can get this repaired? or somewhere that sells the parts so i can do it myself??
Rang HTC and its about 15 pounds for an inspection and 90 quid to replace the LCD (though i don't think it actually needs replacing).
I'm pretty sure I've seen them on ebay already.
Check there.
Have the same problem.
Ordered mine here
Only searching for service manual or just manual to replace it.
thanks for the reply. does the 'touch screen digitizer' have a hard plastic/glass back to it that covers the lcd?
Just trying to make sure its the right thing.
I phoned a few repair places up and basically everyone seems to end up sending it to HTC anyway, so that sounds like the only other option. Since 90% of the cost is labour rather than parts, i think i'll try and sort it myself first

Shame to hear that...

Sorry about the loss. But it has to be said...
This thread is worthless without pics!
well, i'm going to give that phone hospital a go. i've attached a pic. will update in case anyone else drops their phone! It was actually in a case, but i'd taken it out to reply to a txt.
Is their a case that can protect the screen whilst still allowing the phone to be fully useable?
Someone already replaced his screen manualy?
You can get a replacement digitizer for your touch pro on Ebay.
Unfortunately there is none available for the T-Mobile US version yet.

The LCD and the touch sensitive portions are just different layers. A capacitive screen just typically has a specially coated glass layer, where a resistive screen has multiple layers to get input.

Hey Ribena,
Sorry to hear about your troubles.
My doorman's young son hit his fathers PDA with a hammer. I said I would help him sort out the problem - I would be grateful if you could let me know what PhoneHospital have to say about your screen alignment issue.
Rgs,
J
its being looked at now.
after browsing the web, i get the impression a screen alignment failure is usually due to a hardware rather than software fault, so at a complete guess i'd say its the new digitizer has not been installed properly.
finally got the phone back. difficult to see how phonehospital could have been worse.
Taken 3 months, and they've finally sent it back after constant pestering by me. They said it was now working so no refund was due. Unfrotauntely, it isn't working, the screen is still misaligned and the align screen option just loops over and over.
grrr.
I think the best option is to send it to HTC, which is what i'll be doing. Might cost more but
a. it'll get fixed.
b. it hopefully won't take 3 months!
That sucks. If it took 3mons and they still didn't fix the issue id say a refund is in order. Before I sent it in to htc I'd probably try my luck at it first.
Hi
A few days ago in college i was carrying my mate's Desire (in fact, he, myself and another friend there at the time all have them) and dropped it acidentally from about three or four feet. The digitiser/screen broke, shattered quite badly and i felt awful, so i offered to see how i could help in getting it replaced.
Carphone Warehouse wanted £170, we fixed it for <£30.
We decided it couldn't be too difficult to fix ourselves, and being young and inquisitive and very geeky we set about fixing the screen. The AMOLED hadn't bust, it was just the digitiser and from what we had heard it wasn't too difficult to fix. My friend Jed, not the guy who the original smashed Desire belonged to (that was James) had a bit of experience in the area so we weren't totally gung-ho about it. We knew we had to order parts so we did so from Ebay, and paid something like £1.60 for extra-speedy delivery - and then it was time to crack (s'cuse the pun) on.
We took some photos for our own interest, and i thought here would be a good place to see them so other people as enthusiastic about phones as i am could peruse them at their leisure All of the photos were captured with an HTC Desire.
UNFORTUNATELY, we didn't have the common sense to take a photo of the phone before we fixed it, so no before and after shots i'm afraid
Stuff we needed:
Screwdrivers (A small phillips and a torx 6 i think, it was really small anyway - there may have been more)
Cotton buds/pads
Isopropanol (lots)
Tweezers
All in all, it wasn't a difficult job, just one which required patience and forethought. It took Jed and myself three hours, and for unqualified teenagers i think that's about okay. Any questions, be sure to ask.

Just a picture for size reference, we outlined the phone on my Moleskine (hipster, i know i know) so we could remember where screws went.
A close-up of the rear input (USB & Microphone) panel, with microSD and SIM slot.
Jed, removing the rear input panel type thing.
Rear input panel removed, exposing the lower PCB (which is removable).
Entire rear protection panel removed, exposing the Desire's sexy internals.
Close-up of CMOS sensor and antenna.
Unscrewing the main PCB for removal.
CMOS and antenna as above, different angle though.
CMOS sensor and antenna again from a different angle, while we're trying to remove the volume keys (which was SERIOUSLY f*cking difficult.)
Removing the rear input PCB, this was fiddly but fairly straightforward.
Another shot of the lower PCB coming out.
The furry stuff is the remnants of the glue that stuck the digitiser on, it took forever to get off.
AMOLED and touchscreen input port disconnection, which was super fiddly but easy enough.
The phone's main PCB resting on the box in which the digitiser came, for safe-keeping.
Slowly lifting the AMOLED, which was scary.
Old, cracked digitiser. You can faintly make out the damage, all of the top left side had completely shattered.
External front panel, with digitiser removed. You can make out some black furry stuff, which is the glue that held the original digitiser in place. This was the hardest part of the job as we had to make sure ALL of it came off. Isopropanol and cotton buds were needed, as well as sharp flat metal things to scrape off the glue. A LOT of Isopropanol was used.
New digitiser is laid in place and everything's re-assembled, all that's left to do is stick it in.
Final comparison shot, comparing the phone with a replaced digitiser or touch screen with one that never got hurt. Not too bad, if i do say so myself.
Wow great job!
Definitely a useful guide.
Agreed.
Awesome job!
Would you mind letting me know where you got it from and how much the digitizer cost?

very interested in this as well!
nice job onthe post btw!
Nice post, always interested in how things come apart and more importantly go back together again.
Nice job!!
Nice description! I'm wondering if there is a digitizer out there that supports "real" multitouch capabilities for our Desire? Would this work (also in aspect to software needings)? Anyone knows?
The digitiser was found on eBay after a quick search for 'HTC Desire Digitiser', and we just looked for ones that mentioned they were for the Bravo, which of course was the Desire's codename. The digitiser itself cost about £25, which was pretty much the cheapest we could find - the seller was exquisite, with 100% positive feedback and hundreds of sales, they were solely selling phone parts.
£25 is really, really cheap when some people we spoke to about getting it fixed wanted over £150
What a great guide. Thanks so much!
You had a screen protector before the break?
While the digitizer supports "real" multitouch i really think it's the chip that decodes those touches that is to blame for our lack of "true" multitouch.
I'm looking at doing the same project. What did you use to stick the digitizer back? I've seen some people use super glue and some people use strong double sided tape.
Good job took me 3 hours to fix mine lol getting it back together was the hardest part great step by step tho

Very curious about this too (wifes shattered screen) it's the only part that I'm not confident about - one used double sided tape sliced into 2mm strips (http://tjworld.net/blog/htc-desire-tear-down#Finishing).

Hello everyone.
I have a question for you.
I've send my phone back for warranty because one of the leds stopped working.
Problem occured when my upper flash led became blueish and after a while i couldnt even take pictures with flash because it made photo completely blue.
Eventualy, that led died.
Now i got it back from repair and they wrote down something like that:
"Mechanically damaged phone (bruised), consequently damaged rigid flex.."
So, I am asking what exactly is "damaged" rigid flex? As far as I know, rigid flex is some kind of "tape"-like part of motherboard? Some kind of connector? And if this is true, how the hell could rigid flex be damaged INSIDE OF OUR ALUMINIUM PHONE?? The phone was never disassembled neighter dropped. It has 3 scratches on the back above the battery slot. I got them when i was at the beach and phone slided (not dropped or anything) for about 5cm on the little rocks there, nothing MAJOR really, even the scratches are small. Also that couldnt effect that rigid flex.. And if rigid flex would be damaged, as far as i know, both leds would be gone + camera or some stuff??
Thank you guys for your answers and your time spent reading this
With Love,
miHah
I don't know what that means, it sounds made up. I just replaced my upper board with the LEDs on it icant see it getting damaged any way other than a bad led. The board costs $50 on eBay. Did they charge you? I never send back for warranty they always try to back charge. You can always find the parts on eBay. As you can see they are solders to the board. The black cable connector beside them is the power. Maybe that was damaged?

No they did not charge me anything, they just refused to repair that.
I demanded photos of "damaged" things because I am curious if they even opened the thing. I think they didn't as I am looking at those pics.
Those LEDS and the mainboard looks completely different from yours. Or is it only me?
Also, they provided me the "bruised-phone" photo (reason why they refuse to repair it under warranty). Wanna see?
Thank you for your answers!
They are taking you for a ride, the "Flashlight"/LED cable is under that mylar tape that they didnt even remove. I would complain make them tell you exactly what was damaged. you can see visible damage to the LED.
My phone is a telus the bigger black rubber thing is a noise cancelling mic to the left of the leds you can see the 4 solder points just above your leds.
where the wire i soldered to the board was where the gps antenna connectors was and they are right of the leds on your pic. They are the same board just mine is out on my desk yours was still in the phone.
Those boards are different. Make sure if you have the European DHD that you don't purchase a board for the Telus Desire HD or Inspire.
Is that discolorization on the board from it getting wet or from the LED exploding? Wow, can't believe they refused to repair your phone because of some exterior wear and tear.
It was never exposed to water or steam or anything. The closest incident it could get wet was once when I took a shower it was in my bathroom while there was a little steam on the high level of the room but that couldn't have had any effect on anything.
LED Exploding? How could this happen?

These boards are almost identical. The only difference is the noise cancelling Mic. I have a telus desire hd and replaced the board with a euro. One. It worked perfect.
Just watch the teardown video and replace it your self. It takes awhile, but not real hard to do. Took me about 1/2 hour.

maybe it would work just threatening to do it. it has helped me in the past, but on compleatly different case
But luckily it isnt a lot worse than it could of actually been, as you can see from the pics, the damage is done in the bottom left of the pic (or bottom right of the physical phone if that is how you want to consider it). Apologies on the quality of pictures as all I had to take the picture was my galaxy tab 10.1.

I heard in xda that ebay is good for spare parts like digitizer
Screen still works?

I broke the screen on mine. It still worked just fine but had spidered all over and pieces of glass were starting to come out. I simply bought just the glass for it off eBay and replaced just the glass. Works perfect like it is new. Was under $20.

I thought about doing that too, was it hard to take the glass and the glue off?

I, too, have slightly broken glass on my phone and have been considering replacing just the glass, but the display, digitizer and glass seem to be glued together on these AMOLED screens and I heard separating them isn't easy.
I might just play the 180€ and get it repaired at there official service center :/
It's much like the S3. I used the screen replacement videos from them as a guide. The key is to use lots of heat and work slowly. It comes off just fine from the digitizer. Getting it started can be a bit difficult to get under the glass, but once it's started just gently progress along and use a blow dryer on low heat. They are glued together, but can be separated with heat and slowly prying them off. Watch the S3 videos and you'll get the idea. I couldn't find and galaxy nexus videos but the S3 ones worked fine. At one point everyone said the same thing about them that you can't replace just the glass too can they are glued together. But they're quite separable.

Thanks, I will look into it some more. I just can't really justify spending the 180 I was quoted for to get the work done by some repair centre or spend 120 on the actual screen and digitizer and then doing it myself when this phone is hardly worth that price.
