Help! 0.48M extended ROM - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

The following is the whold story.
This morning I downloaded the 1.41 radio and was going to flash this radio rom. Then I took out the SIM card from my Hermes and reset the device. After the today screen appears, there is the warnings said the programs with shotcut in \windows\startup can not run as the programs can't not be found, but unluckly I ignored the warnings.
Then I made a .nbh file including the primary flash screen, second flash screen
and the radio and flashed this .nbh file. After the flash was done, there was an extended rom2 and the total memory of this extended rom2 is 0.48M. The total extended rom memory was 0.48M as well. But when I went to setting-system-memory-storage card, there was the extended rom2 only with the total memory of 0.48M. Then I hard reset the device, the extended rom2 was gone and there is the extended rom left only and the total memory is 0.48M.
I flashed another WM6 ROM, went back to WM5 and then radio 1.40, but the memory is 0.48M still.
Pls can anybody help!!!

Did you flash a Rom with Extended Rom or without it?

no extended rom. Actually the following is the whold story.

Then I hard reset the device, the extended rom2 was gone and there is the extended rom left only and the memory is 0.48M.
I flashed another WM6 ROM, went back to WM5 and then radio 1.40, but the memory is 0.48M still.
Is there anything to do to correct this? All the ROMs I flashed without the extended rom included.

I believe this should be the correct one

is yr device unlock cid?if yes unhide your extended rom delete the stuff in it make sure the stuff you really don't want.
if you are not unlock cid use the extended rom editor make a empty extended rom flash your device.
but make sure you have read the wiki how to do everthing.
if you brick your device i will not responsable for anything.
edit:why do you need a empty extended rom for?

yes. I have the unlocked cid on my Hermes and have unlocked the extended rom otherwise I can't see the extended rom with the file explorer.
I'm not wanting an empty extended rom. I'm just wondering where the memory's gone and I need them to come back as I can install some applications in it for which the re-install is not needed after a hard reset and also I can put the ring tone and data like this in it.
Anyway thank you all the same, p.loong^_^

Just flash a Rom with a Extended Rom and delete all the stuff in it you will get back the space.
Or use extended rom editor search at this forum make a empty extended rom.

The only thing I can think to do is the following (in order):
1. Uninstall ALL applications through active sync.
2. Check no programs left installed through the phones add/remove program icon. If there are any programs installed then uninstall them.
3. Run MountExtROM_v2.cab followed by ExtROMPatcher.exe (attached here as .zip file). This should guarantee that the ext rom is unlocked and unhidden.
4. Through your PC file explorer, navigate to mobile device and see if there are any files on the ext rom - if there are delete them all.
You can now hard reset or install a new OS Rom and all should (hopefully) be ok.
I Always use the above 2 files to unlock/unhide my ext rom IMMEDIATELY after a rom upgrade - this is because I've had problems before with not seeing the ext rom (and 0.48MB rings a bell in distant memory).
Let us know if this works ok.

Hey ach2, I will try immediately although it's 11:24pm now
thanks for your input~~~
I should let you know the result~~~

Well...it looks like that I have to give up the extend rom on my Hermes. I followed ach2's instruction just now but nothing changed....so bad....
Thank you p.loong and ach2 anyway~~~

I'm confused here! You should be able to reflash an ExT_Rom only on your device and then delete everything in the ext_rom if its unlocked right. Hell if its unlocked right you should be able to go in there and delete everything right now. your not doing something right i would flash a OS.nb and a Ext_rom.nb at the same time!

There is the extended rom, but just that its memory has been changed from around 10M to 0.48M.
I tried to flash a rom contains the OS and extend rom, but the extended rom can not be flashed into the device and just like that there is not the extended rom in the rom I flashed at all.
There were 2 extended rom's which are extended rom and extended rom2 once in the file explorer. And the 0.48M is the memory of the extended rom2, but I can't find the extended rom in setting-sytem-memory-storage card. After a hard reset, the extended rom2 was gone and the extend rom left only with the total memory of 0.48M.
Is it possible that this is a hardware problem?

why cant you flash a EXT_ROM? no it does not look like a hardware issue it just looks like you are not doing something right

Application install in non volatile memory XDA II

Does anyone know how I can install applications to non volatile memory on an XDA II, so that it can survive a hard reset. Any help would be appreciated. :?:
From what I read is that you will have to add your apps into the extende rom.
There is some info / threads on this site.
Basically:
1. Get a good 'standard' rom (ie the one youre using now, remeber that alle operator specific things are setup from within the extended rom tooo!)
2. Use er2003edit to edit the extended rom part of it
3. add / remove files and change the config.txt appropiately.
4. Flash the extended rom with your homebrew extende rom.
After hard-reset, the extende rom will be 'run' according to config.txt . . .
Thanks I will give it a go
This will only load the cab files to extended rom, when you install them they will still load into normal memeory.
I used the extended rom unlocker, copied all the cab files to an sd card and deleted them from extended rom, and then finally installed my apps choosing extended rom and the destination
Hope this helps
How did you manage to choose the destination? I've put a cab file on an SD card, but when I tap on it, it just installs it to the main windows folder.
astryger, have you unlocked your extended rom?
Yes, I've unlocked it.

What "ady" meant was:
1st: Install Buzz's Ext ROM Unlocker and unlock your Ext ROM.
2nd: Cut and paste them to your SD Card and save a copy on your computer for backup.
3rd: Perform a hard reset. Since you already took off the Ext ROM, you now have a pure Microsoft OS running on your device.
To answer your question, the Ext ROM is what you see being installed when you perform a hard reset. It is indicated by a progress bar during installation after a hard reset. The Ext ROM contains the customizations provided by the "Brand" name of your device.
The simpliest way to avoid the installation of the Ext ROM, if you don't want to unlock it is:
1st: Perform a hard reset.
2nd: "IMMEDIATELY" perform a soft reset by pressing the reset pin as soon as you see the "Microsoft Today Screen". By doing this, the installation of the Ext ROM is by-passed.
If you are going to ask me where to find the Unlocker. Just do a search. Hope this cleared it up.
Thanks for the excellent reply. Can you tell me what exactly would be excluded by not installing the Extended ROM contents? I am guessing this would be like selecting a corporate install on the O2 XDA EXEC?? Thanks again for any reply.

Any customisations your operator has made. It's hard to say what exactly as that changes per ExtROM (and each new version of Windows Mobile by each operator has a new ExtROM so...)
If you don't install the ExtRom you have plain Windows Mobile, if you install the Extended ROM (which it will be default) it adds patches, customisations (backgrounds, sounds, GPRS settings etc), button configurations, home page settings, add icons, remove icons, custom programs etc.
My advise is to read the wiki (link in top left) open up your ExtendedROM as the poster above advised and then customise it how you want, or just by pass it completely each time and add in what you want manually.

xanth is absolutely right. The Ext ROM changes with each "Brand". I am attacching a link for the O2 Ext ROM explanation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=32527
Some applications in the Ext ROM, you can deduce what it is made for like "default_Backgamon etc...(which installs the game backgamon in Imate Ext ROM) and some are similar to O2's, so let it be your guide.
why
you don't want a "clean version" it would not contain any drivers, camera software or bluetooth software that make life easy. your jasjar is not clean by bypassing the ext-rom. to prove this look at your programs the zip program and voicedial do not come with a clean wm5 image.

Actually ALL WORKS FINE with a clean install, as mentioned above, the only thing you might have to add is the settings for MMS, and video call capabilities. But ALL SOFTWARES INSTALLED WORKS. From BT to WiFi, camera app, voice dial, etc... I know because I already tried it.

Well that depends on the base Windows Mobile ROM. Some will have some features, while some won't (won't fit possibly?) and would require the ExtROM to install them.
I appreciate this is a Universal thread, but one example is the BlueAngel. The SX66 doesn't come with a camera so it's ROM doesn't contain camera software and if you used that on a regular BlueAngel (XDA IIs for example) you'd need to install the camera software seperately.
Hope this actually makes sense.
what about a real clean ROM...
i mean a ROM that does not contain any of those "dog barking" junks media files and themes (there is around 8MB of these), as well as unnecessary EXTROM files. YET sparing drivers for camera, bluetooth , and other crucial drivers.
thanx
go it
then you are correct to hard reset then soft reset before your device wants to load the ext-rom
unnecessary media files are not in the ext rom
they come with the winows folder and the my doc. they r more than 8mb , and they serving for NOTHING... so stopping the erom wont save you from them

what does Extention ROM do ?

what does extention ROM do ? how about if i do not install extention and radio rom and install just nk.nbf ?
can anyone write their necessarity ?
thanks
Extended rom contains additional files installed to a normally hidden partition. These files are typically used to configure the "virgin" rom, by including your phone Operator's themes, phone dialler, GPRS settings, various patches and extra apps like PDF reader/Java etc
We normally don't like Extended roms - we normally patch them so we can access them in the normal way, and use them as extra storage for our own files. The Operator's files are normally big and slow things anyway that we don't want to install, so it's free space for us. Generally...
V
Ext ROM installs the softwares added by ur manufacturer or those whose ROM ur installing so it does not matter if u dont want to install dat & can work fine without it , second thing radio is basically needed for all wireless services like wi fi , phone & bluetooth so it is necessary to install and hence if u dont want the specific version of radio to b installed u can leave dat & try ne other version suitable by ur network reception.
many thanks for the explanations. it seems radio and nk files enough for flash my MDA Pro. thanks again.

YES, it is enough to just upgrade those 2, but you have to remember that if you did not erase the contents of the Extension ROM then the old contents of it would still install if you perform a hard reset.
Extended ROM installation can be easily bypassed by performing a soft reset as soon as you see the "TODAY" screen after a hard reset.
But if you really want to erase it, so you don't have to worry about performing a soft reset after each hard reset. Then just install the Extended ROM unlocker by BUZZ and use "Total Commander" to cut and paste the contents of the Extended ROM to your SD Card, perform a hard reset afterwards and all is set.

Delete files / programs from ext rom. HOW?????
Hi there. I just downloaded and installed the ext rom unlocker by buzz. I have an Imate Jasjar rom ver: 1.90.96, rom date: 11/01/06 radio: 1.13.00 ext rom ver: 1.95.05 wwe
I would like to know how I can free up the ext rom space on my jj? I really dont need things like the clear vue pdf reader, backgammon, chess, and skype. Someone here said that I can gain upto 10MB free space. Thats like a whole condo in the middle of manhattan
I would be obliged if anyone could provide step by step instructions on how to do it. I'm quite new at this pocket pc editing thing and any help will be great.
Hoping for a quick reply.

Guide to Cook Extended ROM for Uni?

Hi,
looking for a guide to cook my own Ext Rom. I have looked at the Wiki, but found only tools for the Wiz. Can I use the same tools, or will I get into trouble. If there is a good Uni walk-thru available it would be highly appreciated. I already searched the forum, but did not find what I was looking for...
Thanks.

Yes after a soft reset i still see the extended rom and all the files within it. The files are those Cingular and all those service providers etc and some skype and other stuff. The extended ROM is giving me 10MB of space on the device and I find it quite valuable. Rather than having it occupied by unneccessary stuff. Now this Ext-ROM unhider you speak of will let me write/read things from the Ext-ROM? Does it work with other AKU versions? Like helmi's aku 3.5? Thanks pixx
Be Careful
As always, care needs to be taken unlocking and unhiding the ExtRom. You can use the tools provided and they work well.
- First make sure to rename your 'storage card' to something else than 'storage card' since unhiding the ExtRom will make that the 'Storage Card' and your apps will not run from the SD anymore..
- It is not possible (as far as I know) to lock the ExtRom once you run the tools. But you can delete all the files inside to make it clean.
- The extended Rom space (10MB) cannnot be merge with the other storage, but you can install apps to it, or use it as storage space for attachments or whatever.
I am still lookng for a cookbook to make my own ExtRom...

No relock possible even after a hard reset? A hard reset usually restores the device to an unmodified state but it doesnt restore the data right?
Never tried the hard reset uption so I can't tell if that will work, I flash my device about once a week with different (new) versions.
I may try next time I flash. Does anyone know?
Actually there is a way to relock the Ext ROM. I can't find the thread I read it from, but from what I remember you have to copy the registry settings BEFORE you unlock the Ext ROM. Then install Buzz's Ext ROM Unlocker. After a soft reset, the Ext ROM is now unlocked. Now customized it to your heart's content. Then cut and paste the original Registry settings to replace the new one. Another soft reset and your Ext ROM is now locked again. This is what I read from another thread. I had never tried this proceedure myself, so I can't guarantee it will work.
But, this is what I usually do whenever I customized my Ext ROMs:
1st: Install Buzz's Ext ROM Unlocker.
2nd: Soft Reset.
3rd: Customized the Ext ROM with CAB files.
4th: Perform a Hard reset to check if all the CAB files installed properly.
5th: Once I know every CAB files worked and installed properly, I now proceed with installing my other applications.
So basically, my rule whenever customizing my Ext ROM is: DO IT FIRST BEFORE INSTALLING THE REST OF YOUR APPS. This way you don't have to worry about LOCKING it afterwards.
Sounds like a plan
The next time I will apply a new ROM (probably within the next couple of days) I will try this. One more question: Do I have to backup the entire registry, or are there some specific settings I should back up?
Merry Christmas!

As mentioned, I myself had not tried that approach. But to be sure, make a copy of the entire Registry and try it.
Another suggestion, if you have SPB Backup, this I already tried, so I know it works. Use SPB Backup to DO A BACKUP OF THE ENTIRE SYSTEM BEFORE INSTALLING THE EXT ROM UNLOCKER. After the backup, install Ext ROM unlocker and unlock the Ext ROM. You can now customize your Ext ROM any way you want. To RELOCK it, just run SPB Backup to the BACKUP you created before you installed Ext ROM Unlocker.

@Ireneus
If your purpose is just to delete the files in the "\Extended_ROM" (actual name when hidden) without unhiding it, there are a few ways, all works.
Method 1
- Google, download & install "Total Commander v2.exe" (freeware).
- In Total Commander's command line, just type \Extended_ROM , and you will see it.
- Before you do anything, suggest you copy everything to somewhere in case you need it back again.
- And now you can do anything to it. If it is really "READ" only, Total Commander also can "UNREAD" it. Think Total Commander can delete files with the "atrributes" (hidden, read, system, archive).
Method 2
- Download Helmi_c AKU3.5 V1.3, extract it, look for the ms_nbf in the Empty_Extended_rom, flash only this ms_nbf into you device, it should be empty.
Method 3 (need to unhide first)
- I am lasy to find out which Registry, so before unhide, I copied all the "Registry HKCR, HKCU & HKLM" (hidden).
- download Extrom_Unhider.cab & UNI_ext_rom_unlock.exe (should be in this forum or FTP)
- run Extrom_Unhider.cab first and following by running UNI_ext_rom_unlock.exe, you have unhide & unlock the "\ExtendedROM".
- Press POWER key to powerdown, then Soft Reset.
- You can also now copy "Registry HKCR, HKCU & HKLM" (unhidden/unlock) to different location of above "Registry HKCR, HKCU & HKLM" (hidden).
- So depend you want to hide/lock or unhide/unlock, just copy the respective set of registry. Easy.
@cktlcmd
Copy of Registry & copy back was my posting, anyway I also cannot find where it is, but it works, I tried it myself.

Can you change files in the extended rom?

I like the kaisers dailpad, comm manager, etc. But can I replace ext files for more memory?
Not sure what exactly you are asking for, but if you'd like to use the extended ROM as additional storage, then the answer is yes. Many tools on this forum from different cooks have an option to unlock and mount the extended ROM, After that you'll be able to add/remove files there. Your device must be CID unlocked for that to work. Read the WIKI for more info.

Take a look here for more advice and background on mounting and unlocking the Extended ROM with WM6. You can unlock the Extended ROM then copy out the files (if wanted) then delete then and use the extra space to install more programs without using the SD card.
