Hi,
I'm new here. I hope, not to bother you with a Question, that has been answered a million times, but I couldn't find anything concerning my problem.
I own a HTC Universal, branded as MDA Pro by t-mobile Germany. It works fine so far, not very fast, but OK as a telephone and organizer. Even Navigon 5 worked quick and smooth. Now I've installed Navigon 6, to get newer maps. After the installation the problems began. The application works slow. Calculating a route of 100 kilometres takes up to 4 minutes, and often breaks up with memory allocation errors.
Now my question:
Can I do anything, to make the application work more fast and stable, or should I forget Navigon 6 and return to Navigon 5?
Technical data:
MDA Pro
ROM-Version: 1.30.113 GER
ROM-Date: 04/13/06
Radio: 1.10.03
Ext. ROM: 1.30.223
Hope, you can help me.
Thanks in advance
Kai
Man, check navigon.de and get the 6.1 upgrade.
DONT remove your 6.0 installations, 6.1 DOES need it.
Viel Glück, nach dem Patch wirds viel viel flüssiger
Greetings
Hi,
thanks for the tip. I forgot to mention: The version is 6.1.5 build 741, but it's still slow and unstable.
@ HansiHusten: hat leider nicht geklappt. Es ist zwar etwas schneller aber...
MHh i think i know what you mean.
First to know is, that N6 needs ~25MB of RAM. I have Ilauncher installed and can check this and i also have a nice little app which closes all open programms with 1 click, so that it does free RAM.
When not 25MB RAM avail. it will "crash" not realy but asks what apps can be closed to save RAM, but actually THIS does crash the software.
So a reboot before using it and unloading some today plugins could help. Took me some time to figure that out But 6.1 is still a little bit faster than 6.0
Greetings
You may want to check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=302467
Navigon site specifically lists that Navigon 6 is NOT compatible with Universals (Qtek 9000 for example, but O2 XDA Exec is exactly the same device except keyboard backlight colour may be )
The reason for this incompatibility, as we had found in that thread, -- is that Navigon requires a lot of memory to operate and behaves badly when it does not get this amount of memory. In this case Navigon 6 is even worse than Navigon 5.
TomTom 6 can operate very well on 12-18 MB RAM and if you try to use further routes or re-enter other destinations, deals with memory release very well. Navigon does not. Even version 5 of Navigon was great if you were entering just 1 destination, but try entering another, or look for POI nearby, and you get it slower, slower and it finally hangs and you would have to warm reset the device.
(That said, I loved having Navigon 5... fantastically well made software... shame it's not for Universals. I paid good money for it and was quite appalled to find that long awaited Navigon 6 will not be useful for my Universal... a big eff you into my face. Well may be my next device will be compatible and I'll get upgrade pricing then.)

hi guys.
can you tell me how big the tomtom program and uk maps are roughly. I need to know what size microSD to buy.
also, is there a free bit of software that I can use to test if my gps is working on my phone.
thanks
matt
sent from artemis
around 2xx ( less than 250mb) for GB plus map
Hi, I have just installed TomTom 6 on my O2 orbit and it took 286Mb on the memory card, It works fine with no problems.
I use a piece of software called visual GPSce
http://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPSce/default.htm
This is a very simple way of seeing if the GPS is working it also shows the speed and other information.
Hope i am not breaking any rules by posting the url

Have you taken a look at IGO2006 or MioMAP v3.2 ?
Tomtom lacks the polished finish that these two (same core app really) have managed to achieve.
IMO

I agree, I ditched TT in favour of I-Go ... MUCH clearer and more intuitive interface IMHO.
Hi P3300 owners,
After having my P3300 for about 7 months i'm still satisfied, it's more compact than my previous Eten G500 and is exactly the size of a phone.
I use it mainly as a phone, to take quick notes, calculator, gps. First I planned to use it as mp3 player also, but not too much at a time, to save some battery
I saw there is a P3350 allready with added 3G function, but don't need it for the moment. Glad to see this summer WM6 Crossbow will be available for our device (after it wasn't the case firstly) but our P3300 is award-winning, so it deserves the 'vista' for our pocketpc
Now i'd like to discuss some thoughts about new software / hardware :
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. ROM
I still have the orginal rom 1.12.0.0 and GSM 02.67.90
is it worth upgrading, what is the best rom at the moment + advantages ?
In past I upgraded roms for my xda2i but now i don't seem to bother
2. GPS
I work with tomtom, satisfied, but could be better.
Free TMC instead of paid tomtom plus gprs services + more maps (Greece,Turkey,Thailand) for travelling is what i want.
I tested route 66 & destinator 6 in past but still looking...
Tried to install IGO 2006 and ViaMichelin but both said 'not a valid win 32 application'. I guess it's because I work with Vista 64, but same error on pc of collegue (XP 32bit).
The new Igo8 looks great in 3D : http://www.i-go.com/en/news/index.php?aid=110
What is your favorite GPS program? Your TMC works fine over radio without issues?
4. FREE GPS PROGRAMS
I guess this won't be as nice like paid programs.
Do you know any free gps tools with maps for travelling countries like greece, turkey, thailand for example ? Tried googlemaps and some other but did't get any images.
5. UNMISSABLE SOFTWARE
What are your favorite toolz at the moment ?
For me it's :
- SPB Pocketplus & SPB Backup
- Hitchhiker (still the old 2006 beta, no updates comming
- SkypeLowCpuBeta (free calls when travelling)
In past i tried mobimate world (nice for flight hours updating), Weatherstuff, and RSS News feeds.
6. EXTRA HARDWARE / ACCESSORIES
Checked Ebay for some very cheap usefull accessoires and I found :
- A silicone case + screen protectors
- A Motorola H300 bluetooth headset with 30 hours talktime + 30 days standby due to 1 AAA battery, that's a lot without recharging
- A dual sim adaptor (have 2 simcards, one with free sms after 16hrs+weekend, the other free talktime after 16hrs+weekend talk is cheap
So if you have tips / remarks on these topics, share your thoughts!
Ciao!

1. ROM
I have the same ROM. It s stable though so no upgrade needed (unless crossbow of course)
2. GPS
I use MioMap. I had the problem of 'not a valid win 32 application' when running the setup.exe from my pc... then, as suprising as it is, i understood that in fact i had to run the setup.exe from the PPC ! Maybe you should try that too...
3. ???
no 3
4. FREE GPS SOFTWARE
hmm nope i don't have any free one
5. UNMISSABLE SOFTWARES
- SPb Diary
-Spb Mobile Shell
-Citytime (as usefull as worldmate, but lighter and faster.
-Spb Brain Evolution (when i'm bored, it s good to train the brain
-Resco Explorer 2006 (it's a MUST. Comes with Resco Registry)
-MioMap 3.2 - GPS software, imho better than tomtom route66 or any other soft. Not sure what are the exact difference between IGo and MioMap, i just know they are almost identical and same manufacturer, but MioMap is stable on my p3300, Igo wasn't...
- PocketStars : If you like watching stars and want to have all the details of what u r looking at... it's the best. (includes gps function to give your exact realtime sky chart at your position!).
-Metro : all bus & metro of thousands of cities in your p3300 good for travellers.
- SKTools : to optimize the P3300 (free back the ram, deletes invalid notifications queues, etc...).
6. EXTRA HARDWARE / ACCESSORIES
no idea yet, just got my HTC for 2 weeks now, but that dual card sim holder u talk about interest me...
--------------------------------------------------------
5. UNMISSABLE SOFTWARE
What are your favorite toolz at the moment ?
For me it's :
- SPB Pocketplus & SPB Backup
- Hitchhiker (still the old 2006 beta, no updates comming
- SkypeLowCpuBeta (free calls when travelling)
--------------------------------------------------------
Hi, glad to hear that u are satisfied with the P3300. I would like to ask you about skype. I use also the low cpu version (which hasn't been updated for some time now). The problem is that audio is terrible, i can't hear anything useful only a low pitch sound (although sometimes and for a second or two the voice is ok). Text chatting works very well. I believe that maybe is the slow CPU of the P3300 (and there was no improvement with Overclocking)
Have you noticed similar issues while using skype for voice calls?
Thx

There is no way that TMC will ever be possible on the Artemis, for free that is. Yes, I know that some users disagree, after all, when the radio can handle RDS, why cannot it handle TMC?
According to HTC however it is just not possible and I think they should know best.
Having said that, I do think TMC is not that great. It isn't where I live anyway, with lots of delays. TMC will inform me that there is a traffic jam on the A28, as if I didn't know allready, looking at the 300+ cars in front of me.
Thanks for the heads up on Igo 8, that looks pretty cool. Wonder how well it actually functions in practice. Anyone know if it's released to the public yet?
Firstly I am not having a go at any of the ROM creators here - just trying to understand what is going on with my device.
I have O2 Orbit, have used O2-WM5, B&B and now O2-WM6. Using Navigon 6.2 installed on SD card.
I am route planning for holidays and have a route that is a 3 hour route with 1 waypoint. I created this route when running O2-WM5. With B&B i cannot get the saved route to load, and often I will get a memory issue and be asked to close other apps (normally phone is the only other open). Tried using overlocker in case it was processor issue - no joy.
I reverted to O2 - WM5 and it works, upgraded to O2-WM6 it works. What is the difference with the B&B Rom? Is this related to Ext-ROM or lack of? Do all the HTC-home and theme take too much memory?
Thoughts and advise appreciated - and if there is a nice looking WM6 ROM that someone can recommend I would appreciate a link!!

Thoughts about Navigon on Mobiles
Hi!
I am facing the same problems (Navigon 6.1 on an O2MiniS, WM5). Only the simplest functions work -- as long as nothing else is done with the phone.
I have not had a chance to try this out, but this is advice I got:
a) use a faster (mini)sd-card. Amongst others, Transcend sells fast cards. Navigon does not advice doing this, but tells me I can try.
b) remove all superfluous maps from the card.
c) install the program so it runs from your mobile -- not from the card.
Let us know how you are faring!
Bob
Okay so this may be a Navigon issue rather than WM5 / WM6 / B&B ROM. I am going to try tomorrow to flash a clean rom, install no programs nor synch with laptop and see what happens then.
Currently with O2-WM6, synched (500 contacts / 100 email) the route planning "works" after a 60 sec delay before completing calcs from point a to b and then again from b to c..!!
Will let you know how it goes.
Thanks
Eoin
Hello,
i have the same Problem. At all cooked ROM with more RAM MN6 are not Display the Route and crash. With orginal ROM and ROM with low RAM MN6 perfekt work.
Is there already a solution?
heross
I have never been able to resolve it. As a workaround I now use Hibernate before MN6 which seems to clear enough memory. If you find any answers let me know.

I've been playing with various satnavs over the weekend, all on the standard Dopod WM6 ROm... the following all worked, using UK maps, and planned a route from Suffolk to Lancashire (250 miles):
TomTom 6.02 and 6.03
Navigon MN6
Route66
iGo MyWay
My thoughts on them are as follows:
Navigon: Too slow, graphics unclear, not enough features
iGo: Not bad, but still junt missing a few bits
Route66: A serious contender, but you cant view your route easily or manually modify it or avoid areas. Speed Camera warnings are absolutely brilliant though, and performance is fast.
TomTom: Definitely the best overall - if it had free traffic and speed cam implemetation lice Route66, it would be a complete no brainer. As it is, the ability to avoid sections of routes etc and subscribable traffic if needed make it my personal preference.
If you need info on how to get hold of TomTom, PM me!
try that one...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=316058&highlight=donothing.zip
it worked for me.
good luck
THX,
cleaninstall of MN6.0-> deinstall->update to MN6.2->install MN6.2 have solve the Problem.
MEMORY error is definitly a ROM version problem. Try a fast ROM like Vanilla 2.0 or Stripped HTC WWE ROM --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334810
Navigon need a lot of memory ~about 15mb free to run. I don't know if it's fixed with last update. I think that they are going to build more and more PNA and less PDA softwares updates. If you can try UPX4PDA That can compress your .EXE and .DLL, I 've done it for TOMTOM, .EXE ist now 920 Kb (before 2,30 Mb).
Anyway Navigon and iGO look nicer than TOMTOM, but TOMTOM run faster on PDA (with 200Mhz Processors). Gonna see with next generation with VGA and 400 Mhz proc.
hi,
I am readin with interest your post on the UPX4PDA.....
where do I find this app and does it improve noticably the performance of the application??
UPX4PDA really no matter for RAM problem.
Because once you launch your apps, it self decrompress it into memory and restoring it's original size.
With this tool, you'll only gain spaces on ROM and maybe quickest launch.
Only space and no speed gain.

Hello
installed IGO 8 on my artemis with meschle rom vanilla 4.02 with cube
runs perfect, for the moment no diverence with speed as tomtom
tomorrow i will give it a special test with monumets , speedcams etc
for my onest opinion layout and design better then tomtom
i noticed for the moment just one minor problem;
Igo 8 gets stuck when s2u2 turns on,i just removed s2u2
are there some other user so i can hear there opinion
greetz Hatchy
Ive installed S2U2 yesterday but haven't run IGO8 yet, so will do it now and post my findings in a bit.
Ok had it running for ten minutes now and has been fine?
i have got S2U2 setup so that it only comes on when the device is in standby and with IGO8 keeping the phone on it doesn't even start S2U2.
IGO 8 vs TomTom Navigator
Yeah,
installed IGO8 too, our 200MHZ TIO OMAP Processor is still fast enough
Maybe in future it will be too slow when 3D graphices are real to life, or like TomTom Navcore 8 (not for pda's). Tomtoms graphics are like a 80's computergame
My father in law still prefers tomtom (very user friendly) even with the 'easy mode' in IGO8.
I still have to test it passing monuments to see the better graphics, but runs smoothly, you can see that they worked on this one.
Any other competitive packages with great graphics ? (tested Destinator & Route 66 already in past). Maybe TomTom Navigator 7 will have better 3D graphics, any news ???
Thanks,
Innovator
using IGO8 from begin of may with full details and works perfect.
I'm not using S2U2
I 'm using iGO8 full with 3d elevations, custom pois etc. Works fine on artemis with Vanilla 4.1 (not touch).
Problems (2) that I mention is:
1. it needs at least 16 MB ram free
2. when I press the call button to make a phone call during navigation, dialpad screen is a mess and no call can be made.
Waiting for a better Greek map because building numbers is totally wrong.
Fantastic piece of software.
navigon 6.5
i also used the igo8. but as i made any turn it ran back in 2d modus. so i went looking for other navi software. tomtom i had for a very long time, but when i wanted to go to croatia for vacantion, i had to switch between 2 maps. western eu and eastern eu. now i use navigon, very convinced that this is really good. had no problems what so ever on the way to and back from croatia. fast and very good working for me.
Tested
Hello
i tested igo almost the whole day
NOproblems
it works great
zero times stuck
i got calls in between no problem
i going to keep it on my artemis , much better grafics then tomtom
one thing, didn't see the 3d buildings yet

HTC P3300 with meschle vanilla 4.02 with cube
Hey i've tested it too ... first I had the "not enough memory" error, now I use filesystem cache 125 kb so it starts at least ...
but if I want to plan a long route the error message of iGO appears: "Not enough Memory, use different parameters"
I've got 27,6 mb free program memory (Meschles Artemis Touch 4.02 Vanilla) ... whats the problem, any of you got an idea???
I think in general Artemis isn't really fitting the performance specifications for iGO 8.

How do you achieved this? I played around with the memory options for 4 hours -> no success
I don't know
but i closed all programs ( also pocketcm)
i removed everything from tomtom and i set the splash screen on disabled
with me no problems and i just have 19 mb free
Update
I am using igo now and it works perfect
i've got a 4 gb micro sd with full europe for igo 8 and full europe for tomtom
so i can use both now
works like a charm
no problems for me
Hi.
Any way to get a link where to download IGO and test it, please?

That may be a good answer.
Anyway, is there a real difference between Tomtom Navigator and Igo? I got Tomtom on my ARTEMIS and it's quite good but sure, I do not see buildings in 3D.
I have Igo8 on my Artemis (working on Artemis Touch 4.02 Full no cube ROM @ 473 MHz) with full details and some skins and works fine (need at least 16 MB free RAM)
3d buildings
3d maps
realistic textures
full europe maps
Do IGO's maps take a lot of size on Micro SD card's or not? I know that for TOMTOM, maps can be about 100 Mb.
Hi I installed iGO 8 properly. But when it starts I see only blue igo screen and and " INIT API" then the program closes. Does anyone know what should be the problem.
I have Black&Blue 4.1 WWE Rom installed.

what about free RAM before start IGO - more than 16 MB?
Bought version or Downloaded? so much aspect to solve your bug...
Bucci, thanks for your answers so quick
I will give a try with IGO whenever possible
Hey all,
I've been an avid user of TomTom from V5 upwards. I currently use V7.
I only have experience with TomTom and have always stuck to it as I've had no complaints. Easy to install, easy to customise etc..etc..
I'd like to ask you to vote which you use and why.
PLEASE CAN WE JUST GIVE REASONS AS TO WHY YOU USE WHICH AND NOT START ANY ARGUEMENTS WITH ANY OTHER POST!
Keep your reasons simple and to the point.
Many thanks
Wayne
edit: If anyone has any other nav software they use, I will amend the Poll accordingly.
I have tried Tomtom 7, Navigon and iGO8.
Quickly removed both Tomtom and Navigon when I got iGO8 running. Both of them had much more noticable lag.
Im using TomTom too.... but it does have lag, does igo8 have less?

MUCH less.
I'm using tomtom, well that is to say I have it on my phone as I have in car satnav, but I use it to scroll through maps etc and find the place I'm looking for prior to getting in the car.
As such I'm not really worried about the lag issue (in fact I don't think I've even used it as satnav since I've had my HD).
I did try IGO8 but I immediately installed the tomtom skin as it's what I'm used to and I like the layout of tomtom.
i' using garmin.i think it better that tomtom.way more options, but guess they all do the same at the send.
TT, even if the last version is not working perfectly on HD 'cause it wasn't designed for it, anyway it's the best and it remain the only one
sat nav
I have the Garmin in my car but atm haven’t got on my phone but I would like to put it on. Can anyone tell me if I can use the software from my car one and if so how do you put it on. Alternatively where do you get the satnav software from and is it special one just for phones.
strange no one mentions about mapking... i'm using mapking though i prefer the background of garmin. but garmin searching can be a real headache
Like the OP, TomTom. I have used several versions over several years. Very easy to use.
There is a lot of scope for personalization and custom of map colour schemes and system menu screens etc.
The supported .ov2 POI files are common and easy to install. Voice alerts area easy to create and install for all POIs including safety cameras.
Having said the above, iGo8 for example has a more comprehensive map set and impressed me when visiting the UAE. I found the display and interface unfamiliar, but I would consider prolonged use with a TomTom skin.
TomTom here as well.
Mainly so I can use my Speed Camera Database.
How poor is that.....ONLY 25.6% (roughly a quarter) of those who voted shared a comment.
If it helps I use Route 66, so I didn't even get to vote
igo is the way to go
i have a Touch HD with both TomTom and Igo8 on, i was trying to use TomTom but found it lagged and was unreliable in getting a fix( a big prob with the HD) but when i put Igo on it worked first time and every time since, and i must admit it looks much better with the topography in 3d mode, its very nice, so i WAS a TomTom fan, but now im a Igo 8 convert.
I use SYGIC (Mc Guider) 7.6 because it´s easy to handle and it works in landscape perfekt.
Ive tried CoPilot, TomTom and iGo8, and I've stuck with iGo. It seems to update the quickest, the instructions are very clear and the display is excellent.
TomTom for me.
My wife bought me a full retail TomTom package a couple of years ago including the software + their GPS device at a total cost of GBP200 (~EUR180). When I (inevitably) upgraded my phone five months later I was unable to transfer the licence to the new machine because I'd gone up a version in WM and my TomTom software wouldn't install. All of that money we'd spent on the retail version was immediately wasted, which was very annoying.
I was forced to find and use a cracked version instead of my legal and perfectly good version simply because TomTom designed their software for one specific operating system and wouldn't do anything to help me.
I have bought lots of legal software for my PC and for my PDAs (and have donated to this site) and fully support the anti-warez policy on XDA-Dev, but out of principle now I will always use a cracked version of TomTom in revenge for TomTom's policy. TomTom will never get another penny from me.
BTW, this is a useful site for downloading free POIs for most software, thought it may be useful!

CoPilot is now listed as compatible with HD:

Tried Navigon MN 7, iGo 8 and Tomtom 7...
I'm using Navigon MN7, just because it has the nicest look (maps...) when you drive...
iGo 8 is also very nice to use, unfortunately the Tele Atlas maps are not so accurate, compared to the much better NavteQ maps used by Navigon !
And Tomtom, for me, has the World ugliest display when you drive, AND the not so accurate Tele Atlas maps ! IMHO, definitely the worst navigating software you can use... ;-(
