The official rom for Hermes will comming soon. Is there GPS available in Hermes? This is because i have heard that there is a shipset inside Hermes which is the same as Trinity. Can anyone tell me ?

I believe the GPS development has ended since no one is willing to try or give out instructions to build an antenna becuase it might bricked or fried their phone just for the sake or GPS. Just get a mini bluetooth GPS receiver and put it into your pocket. You can then show it off to your friendshat you have a built-in GPS.
Still busy
Well, I am still busy to get an antenne in my TyTN. I'm looking for a company/repaircenter who is willing to modify my TyTN.
When I have fineshed my search I will report as soon as possible.

so instead of RTFM we now have RTFW ?
btw, it's not worth it, save the trouble and just get a stand alone bluetooth GPS for $80.
Why
Why isn't it worth it? Is it technaly not possible oris it just because of the money?
Post 268 is the thread you posted closes with: Not trivial, not easy, and IMHO not worth the cost of the phone.
I am from Holland and my English is not that good, but it read that it is possible, only with some risk. I am looking for a repaircenter. I know that they know what they are doing. I am searching for a company which has some intrest of modifying TyTNs.
Who knows it works... or not. We'll never know until someone is taking this chance.
no one know the exact pin out
no antenae
no one is willing to risk $500 device for a function that cost $80 to buy
The problem is that we do know the exact pinouts. It's in the GPS development thread. What we found out was that the GPSMix pins were deliberately grounded to follow Qualcomm's best practices for RFR6250 applications where the GPS is not used. Failure to ground the pins could fry the device or increase power consumption. Additionally, a software controlled LNA was critical to the project from a battery life perspective. Re-enabling the on board LNA that was software controlled through the [email protected] instruction set meant lifting 5 pins then building matching circuitry and constructing a seperate RF cage to hold everything.
@Sleuth
Do you have some advise when I speak to repaircenters about this modify? Can you make a list where we have to watch out for?
Do you think it is possible to make the antenna in the TyTN, technaly and physically?
@tembares: Yes, its possible but not trivial or inexpensive to do. You will have to be well versed in micro-circuitry soldering techniques and have some pretty good equipment at your disposal to lift the necessary pins w/o trashing your Hermes.
The GPS development thread contains most of the information that you will need. I don't think a repair center would take this mod on and it will for sure void your warranty.

After a deep thinking and consideration I thought I need to benchmark the market -or in this case the Forum. I have been having Jasjar (Universal) for quite sometime now and was not so sure whether I keep it or not.
Every span of couple of months new device is launched with this feature or that benefit. Many that have proved functionality and other proved to be a total disgrace to the ppc industry
And since I am a member in this forum for almost over a year now, I wanted to ask all -at least who will visit this thread- how many of those are using Universal and those who are using other devices ranked in this Forum? If any would -thankfully- be coming up with serious statistics of the wide use of Universal vs. other devices and brands this would definitely indicate the global domination of such device and the versatility not to mention that with the latest ROMs this device became more and more dearer to me as much it is to others -I reckon so!
I am sure this would help all those programmers to focus more on developing roms and apps compatible with Universal than others. I would ask anyone who reads this post to contribute in voting and comments would surely be appreciated.

Why not start a poll?
Universal
Hi Cyber-mate
To let you know; I do love my Universal and I'm using it 24 hours a day!
So I think I'm the first who answers your question
'Yeah... Lets start a poll'.
Cheers, Leo
Hi Cyber-mate
Have to say, I have persevered with the Universal, and that since the genius rom builders on here have cooked up some of their magic I am at last a happy Uni owner. I bought mine in Sep/Oct of 2005 and I can honestly say now I find mine usefull. I'm not a heavy user, but it is my main squeez (so to speak).
Regards
Mavrik
The reason there are so many devices, is because the market can support them as different people like different things.
There is no such thing as the best device, or the perfect device, it's what you think suits your needs the closest.
Currently, the Universal is the highest specification device, but soon the Athena will be out, but this is much larger, and not designed as a mobile pda phone, and also the Omni, which is the replacement for the Universal.
Really though, if you like your Universal, then great, if you don't, then listening to other people's views on what is good or bad will only confuse you.
We like the Universal, but there are many more that hate it.
I love my unversal too, and I think I keep it until I can get an Apple iPhone.
Or maybe I never change it to another device, because it has all thing in one, except GPS. But I can live without it, still we have BT GPS on the market.
Confused!!!...
Not sure what you want!!!...
Benchmark PDA? Yes I like my Universal!!!...
Benchmark Forum? Yes this is a good forum!!!... Of course, somethings are not allowed here but can be found somewhere!!!...
Benchmark self cooked ROM? This is definitely the best before WM6 starts to be banned!!!... If this banned forever, well one good thing less!!!...

You see CWKJ, there are 100s of opinions from 100s of poeple. However, being a person among a large comunity that consider Universal as a gr8 device that has got the all-in-one! I mean, just check any of those posts with a ROM related topic, you'd see more than 100k entries and with no doubt this indicate that it is widely used and YET proven to be a
top-of-the-list device.
I am sure many more would agree with me and to tell you the truth, Apple IPhone is a pansy one.
We are talking FUNCTIONALITY here and not looks and colors! A device that can connect wirelessly, bluetooth, camera, keyboard and many others proves to be a true Pocket PC.
And hey, one more thing, when we talk about a Pocket PC, we aint talking mobile phone, I mean apple to apple
Hi,
about the Universal, I have to say it's a wonderful device which can be very useful and helpful. Thanks to its VGA display you can browse Internet really well not like those other devices with smaller resolutions.
The "laptop alike" makes it again very useful to write anything, even long texts.
I think about it more like a little laptop replacement (...ok the OS is not really a good OS replacement but I guess this would change with Linux...). It's another way of PPC, since I got my Hermes (about two weeks ago) I see how it's different, I use the Hermes with just one finger (almost everything) while I don't use the keyboard too much....on the other hand with my Uni I almost did everything with the keyboard.
So now with these two devices I have to say I use the Hermes as an "stable" PPC and the universal to try every new ROM is created, I'm trying to learn how to cook them, etc so now I think I'm enjoying the Uni even more!

hmm this thread sounds like it could take off.
i dont think you know what you got yourself into supaspud. i know lots of people are going to have questions and suggestions for htc.
i for one would like to see them implement a wheel mouse not unlike the one in the danger sidekick 3. that would make wm experience 100 times better.
also ask if crossbow will officially be released as an upgrade for the wizard.
when i think of more questions or suggestions ill reply again
?Why don't they make a full size (3.5" or whatever) screen in a cdma with more memory. Hell it doesn't even have to be vga. I use mine as a pda, if I wanted a tiny screen, I'd just get a damn phone.

Save yourself the bother. It would be up to the telco's to decide on releasing an official update and they would then pay HTC to build the rom. Expect that to happen about the same time as the telco's decide to donate all their profits to third world charities.
It's not a telco thing. If you are refering to the companies who re-brand the HTC machines (most of whom are not telcos) the decision will be based mostly on whether HTC will actually supply the ROM and at what cost if any. They would have a fairly good idea about what they are going to do for some machines as they own one such company that retails their machines (Dopod). Find out about possibility of Artemis crossbow ROM if you can
Linux
It would be interesting to get their opinion on Linux on the HTC platform, and whether they would consider contributing to the development of a well rounded Linux based phone environment.
Yes, their opinion on linux would be good to know
Ask if they have any future plans to support it officially.
Ask them what (apart from soldering the chips on and editing the rom file for memory alocation) needs to be done to make 128mb of ram work on UNIVERSAL (it origionally had it, so the motherboard supports it and it can work
Hello Leaf Wireless
Well, well Greg, I thought that Leaf would not come out of the closet.
I have been the source of information till now, but now please take the stage.
A few months back I introduced a few of your staff to the XDA site.
I am now and then fed tit bits of information which I share on the forum. The ROM 1.35 update is a good example.
There are some clever guys here and we can all all learn together.
The problems I raised with Renier was:
1. Storage card getting lost in Media Player
2. Windows 5 is full of unresloved problems, with the BT stack poor.
3. Battery life on 3G is shocking. I have upgraded to 1.27 to see if things improve.
4. I have an Email from Dan Mackie @HTC Eupope stating that an Major ROM upgrade would be released at the end of January 2007, "to resolve all known issues on the TyTN". Nothing has happened yet!
The issue with the storage card was a known issue and I was informed at the end of September that it would be sorted with the next upgrade.
It hasn't happened yet but I have noticed that the TyTN's that you have received do not have this problem.
Please feel free to contact me should you wish.
Enjoy the trip and let me have a copy of the new ROM before you leave.
Regards
A wish list would be for the keyboard have some kind of a lock to prevent it opening when retrieving from the pouch. I find that I often drop call on closing the keyboard.
The magnets in the pouch are also troublesome and cause screen rotation and also dropped calls at times when rotating back.
GPS in the Hermes
What component of software (hardware??) is missing in the Tytn compared to the Trinity to make the GPS work.
Thanks
Francisco

Several people have already asked this question:
- How can we install 128Mb RAM on Universal?
HTC never replied.
sheesh...
wow... looks like I opened up pandora's box. i'm making a list of all the queries and i'll ask them on monday. keep em coming...
ps: i'll find out bout the rom now.
Hey SSpud - gr8 offer !
1. I''d like you to ask why they dont set the default Bluetooth (a2dp) to Stereo (and the bit rate / max bit rate to 40+) ... and generally fix stereo BT.
2. How do they acvtually work with customers (eg BT in the UK) .... I get the inpression they are extremely slow and unresponsive.
2. Camera - if even cheap sony ericons can have autofocus and macro settings why cant HTC ?
3. Stereo Jacks (3.5 or 2.5mm)
4. Direct access to microSD card
5. When will they update their FAQ's and trouble shooting guides beyond the patronising " check that it is turned on type " answers.
Thanks for this oportunity !!
(I'm especially intersted efor Artemis/ XDA orbit)
Hello 'Spud,
Apart from sorting/mentioning the listed problems here - especially the poor bluetooth stack IMO - please do bump the question regarding their future GPS roadmap for TyTN/Hermes series of phones.
Now that will make a true convergence of technologies.
Kind regards,
Mine is a small and trivial request... could they please please please fix the battery meter on the hermes... the [email protected] +/- 10% drives me nuts... wish we could get the +/- 1% like the other devices.

Tell the guys at HTC to watch the XDA-Developers site to find out what's wrong with their phones and what features are needed to turn them into great devices - remember the IPhone is comming!
Basil
Tell them not to save cents in devices that cost hundred of dollars. For instance they use cheap and weak cpus like samsung (which has only ARMv4T) ot OMAP with it's low clock frequencies. Or they save memory and instead of using 128MB or more RAM! RAM is cheap! I'd like to see smaller touchscreen displays with VGA resolution! Look at the size and resolution of some nokias: E60 or E70. I'd like to see hermes (device with foldable keyboard) with gps, 624MHz intel cpu, 128MB RAM and 2.2 inch touchscreen in the near future!
YES! Tell them about this forum! Tell them not to do stupid things in locking their devices - this simply reduces their markets!
And tell them that maybe it is about time to see their x86 UMPC! Look at the sony vaio UX180P or UX280P!

- I am switch from the 8525 (at&t) to the mogul (sprint) b/c i am saving 170$ although i loved my 8525. While learning and viewing the sprint forums for information about the mogul i found they have been having in depth conversation about the GPS.
1 - the gps is not believed to be stand alone
2 - the antenna issue from what i could read could or could not be there as sprint users took pictures on the phone and found what should be the gps antenna. but regard less when unlocked we should be able to A-GPS (a sort of triangulation between towers to give a approximate position).
3 - further proof that the gps must be able to work other than for emergency's is sprint's release of the EV-D0 rev. a ROM intended to unlock the gps in response to the TILT from ATT.
proof from HTC's site
"HTC is currently developing a separate ROM update which enables the EV-DO Rev. A and GPS capabilities that are already built into the Mogul hardware. Sprint and HTC plan to make this software ROM available in early 1Q 2008. We would also like to extend our thanks to those customers that have taken the time to identify and report these issues to us."
It would be my assumption but this is where i could be wrong and would like to open debate. the ROM should be able to be hacked allowing other hermes to unlock theyre GPS for use with other applications.
hope this excites some of you and gives you hope of one day getting your "gps enabled" or disabled hermes depending on how you look at it to work with tom tom or telenav etc..

I am a little confused...... I thought it was widely agreed that it was not a software problem but a hardware problem..
Have I missed something ?
I thought this too - that there was no actual antenna hooked up to the GPS pins or something?

Guys weve been here before, check the threads on this.
The GPS hardware has been woken up and functions correctly.....however the pins are not connected to a suitable antenna. The most i detected on the Hermes was 2 sattelites and these were not real fixes either.
A hardware mod is required to get the GPS working on the hermes which can be done however wouldnt it be easier to just grab a cheap bluetooth module and settle with it?
Here are link 1 and link 2 to the old GPS for Hermes threads. GPS driver link. And yes Hermes has Samsung processor, but Hermes' radio chip is made by Qualcomm And that is the chip that matters for GPS). But as Mr. Vanx said there is no available antenna.
maybe some people would be willing to do a hardware mod, if it can be done

That is very intresting, I'm intrigued to see if HTC rolls out a rom for Hermes like you describe (though I doubt it the Mogul has different chipsets, this issue has been explored at length in the forums). That said triangulation based GPS is already available for free for all windows mobile phones with the latest version of google maps, the thread is
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=348310
Install the new map, and click the my location option (right button top option) it will provide you with your triangulated location and is usually pretty close.
Seeing as Sprint (and therefore the Mogul) and AT&T (Hermes) use totally different radio technologies, I'm surprised that no one mentioned this earlier.
The Hermes is a GSM phone, operating on the GSM cell systems around the world.
The Mogul, being a Sprint phone, should function primarily on CDMA, just like Verizon.
That said, the hardware differences alone (processor aside) should make this discussion moot in my opinion. You just can't use a CDMA radio ROM on a GSM radio... and I would be highly surprised if the Mogul and Hermes were anything more than just similar looking phones.
Just as a side note... Google Maps now works moderately well on the Hermes, even without a GPS. I'm unsure if this is due to AT&T adding location information or to GMM being able to figure it out, but my phone knows where it is when I run GMM.

I don't know if this topic has been bandied about on this forum. I've searched quite a bit and I haven't found anything. Is there any reason why MS has not released BT PAN on our stacks? I know the carriers have the ultimate say on methods used for tethering but not even the factory unlocked models have this wonderful feature. Wi-Fi tethering is nice and all, but it drains batteries like nobody's business, and if you're tethering to a tablet now you have two batteries dying a quick death. One of my favorite features of Windows Mobile after version 5 aku 3 was the internet sharing through either USB or BT. The speeds over BT were the same as any Wi-Fi tethering since it is the phone's same 3G signal anyway. Bluetooth tethering consumes a lot less power than Wi-Fi and with the PAN profile we also get the benefit of file transfer. ARGH!!!!! I hate having to carry an old POS WM6.5 device in my bag for the oft times I need to jack up my laptop when I'm out in the field. If anybody with any kind of influence with MS is reading, can you also throw in the MAP profile while you're at it? Please? Pretty please? With sugar......

Dude, come on. It is widely accepted that a BT radio consumes less power than a Wi-Fi radio. No, I don't have the back-up because it is widely accepted as much as anything else. Do you also need proof if someone tells you the speed of light is approximately 186,000 fps? You must also be one of those idiots that want to see Obama's birth certificate. BT PAN is a very useful profile and I'm not the only one who would prefer to have it. Search around other platforms and you'll see for yourself, or do you want me to do the work for you as well? Would you like links or do you prefer pictures so you don't have to actually read.

Why's everyone being so mean? Damn, its as simply as someone creating a rom capable of using it but having it turned off for those who don't use it. Its simple. No like anyone needs to get on his case.

It's cool, sitizenx posted my partial post in big red bold letters and I realized my mistake and I owned up to it and clarified. I'm not perfect, only my teacher is (Jesus). I can't walk on water or turn water into wine, but I've been known to turn Mad Dog (MD 20/20 for the uninformed) into a chunky liquid, but that's another story.
Mad Dog? That's pretty ghetto.

Enough off topic here. Double thread anyway. Thread closed.
Greetings all
im currently looking for a thesis topic to graduate, and im interested in NFC
My supervisor asked me to prepare a proposal about the subject, he suggested that i choose an "application" or a certain aspect of NFC to study, i have an idea about maybe doing a comparing study about NFC Security techniques and methods, since one payment is probably the most famous application of NFC, however i cant really say that i know much about NFC, in fact i barely know anything about it, i'm a telecom student, and i'd appreciate if some of you can point me to some reading material or give me some pointers that wud help me preparing the proposal and eventually the thesis itself.
thanx in advance and best regards to all
Well since nobody else has replied to this, I'll help you out. NFC is short for near field communication. NFC builds on RFID systems that allows two way communication between end points. RFID was first patented in 1983. That's pretty general, I know a lot about NFC so if you have any specific questions I can help you there.
For more general information I'd recommend http://www.nearfieldcommunication.org
Good luck with your thesis my friend!
Just don't say you got help from a 15 year old...

Security seems to be a main concern this days. NFC advantages are aplenty, however no one is really concerned about the security aspect of it. i.e. hacking NFC or being able to track a person by their NFC capable phone etc. etc.
I would show that NFC can be easily read for instance passports, credit cards etc... Show the techniques used to circumvent reading i.e. hashing, pin codes.
In the end describe a theoretical approach that it can make nfc's security better.
In the end you just need to be able to defend your approach against other professors so keep in mind you need to be well aware of the subject.
This is my idea and this is how i would approach the subject. Im sure there are hundreds of other applications out there that you can ellaborate on.
Sounds cool though good luck.
thank you all
@Truitt.Jack its not a problem for me to get help from a fifteen years old, if you are good at what you do
who cares how old are you
@ Sofitos : thanks for the advice, i'll look into it
