I just seen a demo/preview of the Windows 7 Mobile Operating System and I must say it looks very nice (take a look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IOTrqlz4jo)
I am curious if it could be used on the TP2/Tilt2 devices once its release in November?? If so, I am very excited.
Does anyone have any insight on this??
Thanks!

Until we can get a working version of 7 Series, I find this discussion pointless.
All we know is from one conference, and a bunch of videos demoing it.
From what we were told at the recent conference:
- Needs capacitative screen for multi-touch with at least four points of touch
- Needs 1Ghz processor or equivalent (the demo device had a Snapdragon)
- Accelerometer
- 5-mega-pixel camera
- FM Radio
- WVGA screen (480×800 not mentioned as a requirement, only WVGA)
- Every phone will have a Bing (search) button, Start button, and a back button.
What the Touch Pro2 is lacking:
- The 1Ghz speed
- Capacitative screen
- 5-mega-pixel camera
My guess is that it will not be a complete rewrite as history has shown time and time again. The restive screen code might still be there for some smart person to re-enable but I highly doubt that all the features of the OS will work through resistive. Also the screen size has not been listed as a requirement, only WVGA was stated. I know all current WVGA devices have a resolution of 480x800 but higher resolutions exist on paper. So at 480x800, is that enough?
My final thoughts: many will try but the screen and over all speed will be a major issue to deal with. If it does get ported to the TP2, the over all experience will be poor enough to fall back to a 6 Series OS.
i dont think it will be well received. it doesnt look like it runs any current windows mobile apps.
From looking at that youtube vid who cares if you can run it on a TP2! Why would I want to ?
Not very impressive. What's the bet it's the same old thing with a different gui ?

I couldn't help watching it and thinking "I don't see anything yet that I'm willing to pay $600 for." It looks nice, but I say wait and see how Microsoft turns it into a pile of crap...
Hey, maybe it'll come with glasses and be in 3D. Seems unlikely though.
If you want to make money short Microsoft (IMO)
I have to say I'm 309% underwhelmed by what I've seen so far of this new ZunePho.....uh, "Windows Series Mobile 7 Set Phone Type...7" wtf ever
I doubt very much that Windows Phone 7 Series will come to any older devices excpet for possibly the HTC HD2.
A big part is it requires a GPU for the animation, and unless WP7S has drivers for the TP2 (if the GPU is even good enough) your not gonna get anywhere.
Also Capacitive will be a stumbling block. There will be plenty of new phones out that will run it very well. So it will be a perfect time to upgrade to a CPU that is atleast 1Ghz.

As you've seen, Redmond anticipated your wish, and officially granted it a few days ago lol.
I should probably state my position on this a little better than I first did:
While I don't argue that this new OS is indeed advanced (perhaps even revolutionary), and seems quite capable at what it does...I still feel strongly that this is not the spiritual successor to the current evolutionary path of the windows mobile platform. I know that's why they played semantics with the marketing name, tagging it with the "7" as if it was the next logical step from 6.5...when in reality it's only a timely branding tie-in to the success of the desktop 7.
Let me put it this way...if the desktop 7 had been a flop, they would have called this new gadget The ZunePhone, because it's that much more than it is WinMo7.
Can I see a show of hands for who else is seriously concerned that what we love most about WM is not likely to be around for very much longer...? I know there's been remarks made that 6.5+ will still be supported, developed for, etc...but until I see some confirmed roadmaps and such, I still think the natural life expectancy of my platform of choice looks a lot more finite than it did a little over a week ago.
EDIT: Right after I wrote that, I found some news that makes me feel a little better about some of this

Actually, I'm old enough to think of a different comparison:
Years ago Coke came out with "New Coke" with a new taste -- more like Pepsi...and the backlash was so strong that they had to bring back the original recipe as "Coke Classic" in parallel with New Coke.
Unfortunately, I think MS is trying to attract the majority of potential customers who don't [think they] like WM...so they're coming out with something that's not WM.

I'm pretty sure that you'll be able to do this, from what I've read already. Plus, think about what you mean when it comes to multitasking because it means different things to different people.
STOP BELIEVING things that have no evidence behind them.
MS has NOT said that multitasking won't exist.
MS has NOT said that backwards compatibility won't exist.
MS has NOT said much more than the little said earlier this week. Stop believe what WMexperts has told you, it turns out MS was just taking you for a ride with those rumors.
Stop being an idiot and wait and see what happens when it comes to the release date.
You guys are basing your opinions on what you saw 8 months before the actual release of the product. THINK ABOUT IT. Just because your dumbass thinks this and that about a premature product, doesn't mean anything. STOP jumping to conclusions. It's really making you look dumb. MS is not going to sit there demoing a new product and talk about copy and paste. Why would they? Ohhhh, because SOOOOOO many people care about that in the world. I appreciate copy and paste and backwards compatibility just as everyone else does, but the truth of the matter is, you just don't know anything about Windows Phone 7.
Hello Folks,
I just wanted to chime in again to offer an "offending viewpoint" about the whole Dell debacle.
I personally think that we are looking at a situation similar to Samsung's here. Keep in mind that both these companies also do business with Microsoft on a much larger front, being desktops and laptops.
At last years MWC, Samsung delcared that it was fed up with WM and wanted to port the whole Omnia series to Symbian. They even showed off an Omnia HD - and gave it all up afterwards.
IMHO, the coincidence is clear - could it be that M$ is using desktop Win pricing? What do you think?
P.S. Odd example is HP...
I don't really know what you're talking about, and it seems like a goose hunt to find the articles you're referring to. At the same time, I'm interested in what you're trying to say. Mind getting a few links and adding it to your post?
What Dell Debacle?
Why is Samsung so upset at MS, and they released the Omnia II with WM 6.5...it could have easily been Android?

Dell is a good company and we forgot all about their mobile capabilities. These leaks have only made our confidence in Microsoft a touch better. WP7 may suck, but at least it's getting around and people aren't forgetting about it.
Hi,
sorry for the long awayness.
At last year's mobile world congress, Samsung openly stated: we are fed up with WM for consumer, and are moving our consumer series to Symbian. They then anounced an Omnia HD.
A few weeks later, it was renamed to i8910. Samsung's press team never told a good reason -> strange.
Should I look up the relevant articles on my site?
You want to look up your own articles on your own site?
Be my guest.
Hi,
here we go - the original announcement at last year's MWC:
http://tamss60.tamoggemon.com/2009/02/16/samsung-omnia-hd-hands-on/
Then, the renaming announcement:
http://tamss60.tamoggemon.com/2009/04/14/samsung-austria-talks-omnia-hd/
Looks strange to me...
Tam
They renamed it because they thought that consumers would get confused - Omnia HD contained the word "Omnia" and therefore buyers would assume they're getting WinMo when they're not. So they renamed it to prevent that confusion from happening.
As for Dell, the Dell Axims were running on WinMo. Then they left it for a while and now they want to release a new phone with WinMo on it. Nothing special or wrong about it.

WP7 license pricing has already been leaked on sevearl blogs (like gizmodo.com)
It's not that expensive and far away from the desktop pricing.
How do people come up with crazy ideas like this?
Hi,
that WM7 is cheap, does not surprise me - I wouldnt want it for free on my XPERIA X1. In fact, I didn't even bother with WM 6.5.
But: then, explain me, why Samsung staff told me that they wanted to rebadge the whole Omnia series to Symbian, and that all future phones would be Symbian based?
Something else: Symbian was founded because Microsoft didn't want to give WIndows CE to Psion for free...another fun detail from the past...
Samsung announced their transition to Symbian when, last year? What did WP7 look like at that time? Why couldn't they change their minds? Also, why aren't you suggesting conspiracies when you see Android and Bada powered Samsung phones?

Pretty sure they said it at MIX. I'm not going to dig through hours of video to find it though. And jeeze, you act like it's some sort of crazy idea. It's already running Silverlight 3+. Silverlight 4 was just finished recently. They don't have time to include it before launch.
It's rather illogical to say a phone based on Silverlight, wouldn't be upgraded to the latest version of Silverlight eventually.
And yes, SL4 was released 2 months after the WP7 preview
And it is silly to think that phone based only on silverlight won't support silverlight in Internet Explorer. Oh, wait
Copy and Paste took only 3 major versions of iPhone OS upgrades to be implemented. Why in 2010 I need to go back in time and live without C&P, while iPhone, Android and even Windows Mobile have it.
You know the Android implementation of copy&paste is terrible broken right? But feel free to get a Android, I'm sure the "no paid apps in Europe" makes it a GREAT alternative.
It never ceases to amaze me that people keep focus on the smallest of small issues, instead of the actual problems. I guess the truth is people are just annoyed about the alternatives being so crappy, that they have to complain about something to justify not buying the phone at first possible option.

Android is Google's first foray into the OS business. Microsoft has been around for decades. Windows 3.1 had c&p, Microsoft 1.0 had it (remember this? http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4915875929930836239#docid=-2992183880068262304) heck, even my old Commodore 64 running GEOS had it. So yes! I am a bit surprised to see such a basic feature missing in the latest Microsoft OS.
btw WP7 marketplace will only be for 17 countries and no sideloading alternative. If you could sideload, a developer can sell you the app from his website or on an alternative such as slideme
http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_.../07/13/windows-phone-7-getting-connected.aspx
17 countries at launch, and no-sideloading is really good for developers who want to write applications for a living. It ensures a good and uniform distribution center for applications.
And as I said with this topic, copy&paste is already made. It's just not supported yet, because the Silverlight 4 implementation was first finished in April.

Gameloft can actually sell their Android games to people living in your country since they can sell from their website. They won't have to worry about app approval restrictions, paying a share of their profits to anyone, or the race to the bottom where everything ends up selling for under $1.

And have to do their own marketing, setup a payment site and distribution channel, and deal with piracy!
And they can't sell apps directly on the phone, but have to guide users to a often long and complicated website url, and a site that's probably not even optimized for mobile phones.
You don't see the big issues here? Distribution and marketing is much much bigger issues than anything else.
Its not the same,
for instance if you send me an email with a coupon code in it, and now I want to paste that on the website of the specified vendor, I cant do it. Outlook doesn't support copy, and IE doesn't support paste.
Oh no!! i am compelled to either remember an 8 digit alpha numeric code (or write it down, sounds pretty primitive to me). What if it was an mailing address on a website that you wanted to email a friend - that's even worse.
I see no reason to stop complaining yet.

I have a complaint about this too. The phone 'phones home' to check if the application is valid. As a developer this is awesome, but as a phone user, I am worried about my data package.
For instance if I install a world clock app, as a result every time i check launch the app to check the time in Denmark, I use bandwidth.
In the states this might not be a problem, but in other countries, data can be expensive.
I hope the implementation of phoning home is elegant, and not burdonsome
There may already be several threads in other sections discussing this anticipated update, but I thought why not. Happy New Years Ladies and Gentlemen.
Microsoft has stuck to their slogan "Early 2011".
The little blue birdy however flew a little closer to sources and overheard "January".
As of now, the update has not yet been released obviously so this gives us all the opportunity to discuss some of our individual expectations from this upcoming update. You may have heard, there may be several updates, not only one.
Let's try not to get too loony but in all seriousness, when I first purchased my HTC MOZART with WP7 I did so without much research and maybe too much faith in Microsoft.
I thought MAC - PC, IPhone - WP7
I can tell you all now, I was severely traumatized by my experience when I first discovered I couldn't customise my ring-tone. With tears still pouring down my face, and Chevron still non existent, I went to Copy and Paste something. It was then that I learnt that the World had already ended.
Now like I said, we can't expect too much but I just want to state what I personally believe and after some scrutiny of my opinion wisely believe I'm in the position to state several of the most 'CRUCIAL' changes that need to take place ASAP on WP7. The severity of leaving these features out has already taken on another dimension. Some features were intentionally left out for future profiteering and others simply because the potential of such features could be exploited in unexpected ways.
Taking this path however has led some of Microsoft's most loyal customers questioning the developmental plans and reasoning's behind a number of decisions.
You have to think, these phones aren't toys. These phones (due to the mandatory specifications Microsoft has set) pack quite a powerful punch in terms of processing capabilities. The true capabilities of these technologies seriously can be quite dazzling. For one reason or another, unfortunately such open technology will probably never fall into the hands of the masses.
However, they seem to have gone a bit too far with the intentional tampering of functionality and the unprecedented level of scrutiny has left Microsoft scrambling to find the excuses, and forced them to re-think their relationship with their customers.
Julian Assange is here questioning which governments are responsible for all these dead civilians and we need to seriously point exactly at the people in charge (Governments - Developers all the same) and demand why, with the level of power they hold, the technology, funds and potential they have access too, are there basic features missing on these GOD DAM PHONES!?
One might state, "If you don't like it, then go somewhere else!"
Well "NO!" is what I would say. Why am I being forced to use outdated technology just to enable me to change my ring-tone! It seems the more we human beings accomplish technologically, the less we are able to utilize it with some common sense. One step forward, two steps back!
It is these corporations that hold the responsibility and have the obligation to set a standard with technological advancements. They are the leading manufacturers, researchers and developers enabling the wonderful standard of life we all possess today. BUT, you have to remember, the people at the front end of these achievements need to be held accountable when a phone shows up on the market that doesn't allow one to change their ring-tone! We as a group of human beings are able to discuss and elaborate. If we are standing here in 2011 with a phone that doesn't allow one to change their ring-tone, we need to stop and start wondering what the hell is going on.
"Yes, I just payed top dollar for one of the most advanced phones out there! So advanced you don't need to change your ring-tone, you just select one out of a list! HOW INGENIUS! "
"Yes, I just payed two million pounds for a luxurious house! It's so freakin high class and luxurious it doesn't even have any DOORS OR WINDOWS!"
See the similarity?
Please Microsoft, give me my Ring-tone back. Give me the Flash Player I deserve. Give me my Landscape Address Bar in MIE. Give me my Multitasking. Give me my Copy/Cut & Paste. Give me my Media player that allows me to Fast Forward/Rewind with my own fingers. YOUTUBE BY HTC DID! Give my USB storage functionality! After all, there is a memory card in there! Give me a voice on my Maps to let me know when I have to turn. Do something about this 'SEARCH' button please. It keeps interrupting me on practically everything I try to do on the phone. At least create a locking mechanism or even give me the option to use it for something more USEFUL! BING IT OFF. Get it?
Anybody else with any realistic functions they believe is a basic requirement? If so please name them.
When the Update is finally released, we can further elaborate on the improvements. I'm sure there will be improvements. WP7 can do better!
Best Regards, Dontworry

Guys you must not compare it with the win 6.x phones. Please jsut think about the potential and look at what you do with this phone instead of what it can't.
I jumped from my beloved pimped qtek 9000 to HD7 and i must say.....even if the qtek is so yesterday .... but the WM 6,5 with working bluetooth-Garmin XT and other cool features was untill today way better than WM7.
I Understand that the 7 software is still in developement, but it is not yet worth the money, the time that i invested just to find out why the bluetooth wouldnt work and so on and so on.
I honestly believed that it would be a realy woooooow phone but it is not. So far it is an overpriced not so usefull dissapoitement.

and come on i gave up on the Samsung i780 in 6 months as it was a mistake i made buying, which i corrected by getting a HTC Touch Pro. the screen was crap as the touch penal never work... the screen size did not allow me to run so many apps, it was so slow... so if u have used i780 for 2 years u should be glad that u bought a WP7 device as its smooth and fast..
CES is around the corner and i think the update will be launched there....

Yeah, you are right. And it seems that soon many people will do so as downgrading mobile computer (which was any WM6.x device) to just fancy phone is not what the people doing real job with the phone are expecting. I'm just waiting for the WP7 update and if it does not contain the mandatory tethering ... bye-bye WP7. Too expensive toy ... that does nothing

Well it does everything a Phone should.... your expectations are obviously higher then this.
Mine does everything I need, after coming from iPhone 4 and Desire HD there isn't anything in particular that I miss. Yes, it doesn't have all the same features but that's the same with any platform you choose.
So a guy from our facebook page said that he has bought domain called "kinhacking.com" and he needs ideas to get it going, post your ideas here or on the facebook page!
Hey that guy was me. Shoot me any ideas for what you would like to see the site be used for...
Of course, later in the evening after I bought the domain, I dropped my kin at the bar (from waist height!) and the screen stopped working. FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Anyway, I would still be happy to host the site. Additionally, I found a Kin on ebay where the owner claims to have unlocked it and loaded Froyo on it. I am trying to get details now...

Don't wanna sound like mr. pessimistic, but I won't be holding my breath until I see some proof.

Does it still work connected to a USB port? Aka, power on & show as "KIN" at windows.
I dont really need that for my evil darkness plans, and could be interested in hehe.

I found it by google searching "kin 2 running android" but I can't post links until I've hit 8 posts, so just literaly look up "kin 2 running android" in Google and it should be the first result.
Anyway, I think the seller is confused about what OS the Kin 2 is running, as I've seen people who've reviewed the kin and thought it had Android, which is blatently incorrect.

Return policy
The seller will not accept returns for this item.
He's just trying to get money. I'm sure it wasn't unlocked at all.
what if we could post a kind of online petition asking Microsoft, Nvidia, or Sharp for something, anything whatsoever. Possibly if Microsoft would continue through with their idea of running WP7 on the Kin from the very beginning of the release before dumping it realizing that they were far too behind. Say we get like 5,000 digital signatures for it, maybe Microsoft will get to work on it? I mean they still have to have SOMEONE working on the device otherwise these newer Kin TwoM's that will not revert to the original Kin Two OS would not be out there
Hey everyone, sorry to take so long to reply to the thread!

I asked him for a picture of it running as well as some directions as to how he did it... He told me he'd get me a picture and never did, then told me (jokingly) that if he told me how he did it he'd have to kill me. I don't think he was telling the truth or didn't know what he was saying.

Yeah, it should still work (I will check in a bit). If you wanna pay for me to ship it I will send it to you.
Ok, so what would everyone like to see on this site? I don't want to drive traffic from here, certainly, but it would be nice to have a place where we can really consolidate some stuff.

I don't think we can count on anything from MS. Considering the fact that they have re-released the phones they will not have any interest in offering an "unlock" procedure, or at least not so long as Verizon has any input in it (which they have a LOT).
