I need to check something about the VarioII on T-Mobile in U.K. If anybody works for T-Mobile U.K please PM me.
yeah... me too... there is much to discuss
What do you need to know Wam7? Is it anything us Vario II owners might know?
Well I got 2 question and 1 favour. You may probably know the answer to the questions. I am planning on defecting from Orange but wanted to know if:
1)T-Mobile has stated any intentions as regard to WM6 on their devices.
2)Does the HSDPA come on the WnW or do you have to have WnW + or the MAx
I emailed T-Mob Uk about the WM6 issue last week:
Mobile USA is going to announce on Monday that it will be offering it's users of Windows mobile 5 devices a downloadable upgrade to Windows Mobile 6. Can you tell me if this will be available also in the UK?
This is the link to the story:
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/02/12/HNmstoutswinmobile6_1.html
thank you
and this is the reply I received:
Thank you for your email about upgrading to windows mobile 6.
At present we do not have any WM6 devices for sale yet and have no support for it as an operating system. As such no decision has yet been made on wether or not we will be offering upgrades to this for our current WM5 devices.
T-Mobile USA is a separate company to T-Mobile UK so even if they do announce upgrades for their devices it doesn't not automatically mean that we will as well I'm afraid. For the moment all you can do is wait. Once we do launch any WM6 devices I will be able to give you a definite answer on upgrading.
I'm sorry I could not give you a clearer answer at this time. If you have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact us again.
Kind regards
As above, there has been no announcement about WM6 yet (and not even one about AKU3!). No word about WM6 you can understand but not even a commitment to an AKU is a bit silly.
I spoke to them a while ago and was told that if they consider it offers sufficient functionality improvements they might offer it - otherwise they wouldn't release it.
I also spoke to someone at T-Mob the other day about HSDPA. I'm on the £7.50 a month deal (although I still get 2GB a month rather than 1GB as I signed up before they changed the WnW plans ) and was told that standard WnW has a top rated speed of 1.8 megabits per sec which is HSDPA speeds. I have been able to get 1.2 tops when doing a speed test so it looks like it is enabled by default as I've never had to ring them and say "Oi, add it!"
I am also on W+W standard and my WM6 seems to connect to HSDPA when required without any phone call to T-Mob required.
Having said that, when I did try to call a couple of months back to get it turned on I had difficulty finding anyone who knew what the hell I was talking about, so as far as I am aware it hasnt been specially enabled on my phone/account.
Im on the standard web n walk and get hsdpa speeds. However, a friend recently got a vario ii on a standard web n walk and was told by t-mobile that he would need to either upgrade to wnw plus or increase the contract term from 12 months to 18 months before they enabled it for him.
Confusingly, it would seem he has got it enabled anyway as he can download at aver 1mbit.
Best to give them a ring I think.
That's exactly what happened to me - was told that the standard WnW package didn't include HSDPA so I emailed the CS and complained.
I now have it on.
However, it *is* technically possible, that I hadn't enabled it on the ROM.
But I'm not going to make that public or people will think I'm a n00b ;-)
----Edit----
Doh!
the MDA vario is capped at 1.8mb/s and the highest speeds i have reached is 1.2mb/s. i read one some reviews that HSDPA is enabled on the phone, therefore you get them speeds reguardless on which tariff you are on. Whe i got my phone on contract they told me i would get the HSDPA speeds on this phone and i wouldnt cost a thing extra.
Well I've all but defected over to T-mobile to enjoy the wonderful bounties of un metered data via WnW. I did see the 'H' replace the 3G icon a few times but when I did a speed test via dslreports I normally got around 380kb/s which I thought must be 3G speeds. (I did enable it on the phone via HTweakC)
When I did call T-mobile they told me it was not enabled on my account and I would have to upgrade to the Web n Walk plus to get it on. Hmm.
edit: On doing a few more tests using the 600k file test I am getting ~600 kbit/sec which is definitely not 3G speeds so I must assume that I am indeed getting HSDPA without it being enable on my account. I'm not complaining.

I've been on the basic WnW since last december, and i've been able to get HSDPA speeds up to 1.2mb
What i can tell you from experience working for both T-Mob and Orange in the past is that the mast you connect to only has a finite number of timeslots, each timeslot will allow for a certain amount of bandwidth.
If you are in an area where lots of people are connecting you will get a much poorer bandwidth than on a mast which is quiet, so although you get the HSDPA icon, its not always possible to achieve 1.2mb throughput.
Tmobile changed there web and walk plans around dec 06,
Originaly you could "request" hpsda on there standard W'n'W package by asking for 325k upload to be enabled.
Since the W'n'W package changes they are only ment to give you hpsda speeds on all but the cheapest option.
Imp
Well I can definitely confirm that I have HSDPA on my standard WnW package. In my area the most I get is ~800 kbps. I am not sure why this is as according to everybody I have spoken to it is not enabled on my account. I'll put it down to the power of the phone.
fwiw, i am meant to be on w'n'w+ as of last saturday (though it doesn't show on my account and the guy had no idea what it was or how to do it)
and i'm getting 800kbps according to dslreports test.
i'm not sure how they enforce the differences, if anyone could be so kind as to inform me - though i presume it's throttling or somesuch as the differences between plus and max is using voip and instant messaging
edit: though last night i installed the 1.4 radio rom and now get 1.2mbps all the time

Is there any rom or program can make the internet speed on HTC DIMOND 7.2mb instead of 3.6mb?
Thanks very much.
you need a service provider that will provide 7.2mbps in your area (not many provide that atm in UK, but i know orange are expanding it up to 7.2 over the next year) either vodaphone uk or t-mobile uk do it, google it as it depends on your areas coverage.

vodafone is already 7.2mbps and three are gonna do it before christmas if they cant they are definattely gonna do it on the first quarter of 2009
Unfortunately, saying that the diamond(or any device using the 3G network) is capable of 7.2mbps is not really correct. Sure, the device itself is very much capable of receiving data at these speeds but the latency in the network itself will never provide that speed, unless perhaps you're sitting three feet from a transmitter...
Basically, even though you're paying for "7.2mbps" you'll never see those speeds in real life...
Oh, and I don't really think that this question belongs in the "Diamond ROM development" section.
7.2 long long way away dude. i have tried vodafone 7.2 from many different locations and using a 7.2 mbps modem the best i have achived is maybe 3mbps but not a solid speed, avrage speed is about 1-2mbps, so 7.2bmps true speed will be achived when, the networks advertise 48Mbps lol.
anyway you dont need that speed on the phone, 1mb is enough mos of the times,
unless you want to stream HD media..
Guys...7.2 is obviously a "dream" for me...considering I'm still with the "E" = Edge under my local ISP DIGI MALAYSIA! Argh!!
and sometimes i can't get 90% of the EDGE speed too
Can i just add to this... MOST servers do not upload more than 1mb/sec.. so how do you expect to download @7.2mb... Not possible, until servers start to upload at those speed you are not going to be able to download @7.2......do you believe mobiles would be fast than a fixed line... Yrs from that happening I'm afraid...!

The only way you'll ever get 7.2mps is by sitting on the mast, at 3am with no one trying to use a mobile in the surrounding 25 mile radius.
Oh, and 3 are not going to have 7.2 before christmas. We've had them in at work today and they're having to talk nicely with T-Mobile so they can improve their network coverage. They have 3.6mps, quote 2.8mps as an average but they want to get away from "HSDPA" as they know it'll never work properly on their network.
... They did however quote by 2010, they should have 14.4mbps
... Now thats a pipe dream...

In Denmark, they already started with the 16 Mbit on 3 network, but as we all know, it is not practical. it is just teoritical.

You guys on the continent get the best... Higher speed home bband connections, the UK average being <8mps, there's more money pumped into the development of the mobile networks including city-wide WiFi and we just get screwed.
3 claimed today in their presentation to have 14.4mps under testing inside certain cells in the UK, but didn't seemingly know where. That coupled with the Virgin Media testing of their 200mps connection, well... Will wait to see...
The only "decent" connection in the UK (personal experience) is T-Mobile as their parent company have pumped the most money into cell development but still its completely lacking. Look at the current Orange & T-Mobile merger that's on / off... 3 in the UK have so little 3G coverage they have had to make a deal with T-Mobile so they can use their backbone and masts for transmitting their signal, else they're never going to get anywhere with signal coverage.
But either way, the lack of cells in the UK coupled with a poor backbone simply means that speeds are too unstable in the UK to ever get the full 7.2mps stable.
Actually the all the tier one UK networks (Vodafone, O2, Orange, T-Mobile) support 7.2 in various locations around the country - the issue we will always have is contention.
The certainly won't admit it but only the first 6 or 7 connections to a mast have any chance of reaching 7.2 - after that it drops off dramatically. When you get up to 30 then your down to GPRS speeds. As someone pointed out, the only way to reach anywhere close to the potential 7.2 is to sit under a mast a 3AM and hope that no one else in the vicinity is online too.
T-Mobile, Orange and 3 will always win out when it comes to contention as they run on an 1800 MHZ network as they came late to the game in the UK. 1800 has a shorter range and therefore T-Mobile put up many more masts to compensate - 3 for every one mast that Vodafone put up on the older 900MHZ network. The Vodafone network will punch out much further from the mast which works better in more isolated areas but in urban or densely populated areas, T-Mobile's 3 masts to Vodafone or O2's 1 mast will always give a better experience.
At the end of the day its swings and roundabouts and experiences are so localised that its not worth swapping networks to improve speed unless you intend to stay always in the same location and never go out the front door.
I've been using mobile data on all four networks all over the UK over the last few years and the only thing I can guarantee is that Orange (which has stupidly been my sole personal network provider for over 15 years) will always be the worst of the lot!!!
Their data network is honestly shocking and with all the outages I've experienced this year I would say that the network is really struggling - actually I think most of them are going that way - and it will be a relief if they do actually join forces with T-Mobile.
Anyway this rant has been building up for some time - anyone else experienced the networks performance getting worse this year particularly?
I blame all the new iPhone users myself!!! LOL

Actually it was announced recently that 3 have the most comprehensive data coverage in the UK at the moment!
Yeah sorry, you'll probably never see 7.2Mb, just like you never get full internet speed it's always 'up to xxMb'
If you live near a mast then yeah signal should be good but probably 5-6Mb at most you would get. (If)
You can follow the tips in the site tips to speed up 7.2mb interent for increasing the speed of the Internet then you can check the Speed in the site http://www.ip-details.com/internet-speed-test/Internet Speed Testyou will know the Difference.
Your tips are useful...

AT&T
Thought this might be of interest to AT&T subscribers:
"AT&T needs to spend $5 Billion to catch up
by Dave Freeman on January 20, 2010
With all the crap that’s gone on (and still going on) between AT&T and Verizon, it’s safe to say that this is the last thing AT&T wanted to come out. According to a study that just came out, AT&T would have to spend approximately $5 billion US to get their network to the same level as Verizon and Sprint.
This probably doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone who actually owns an AT&T phone, given the almost constant problems with dropped calls, spotty service, and slow data speeds. The study also admits that AT&T has started to upgrade their infrastructure, particularly in the Bay Area, with positive results. This makes sense give the nature of their agreement with Apple."
[Via PCWorld]
I guess this explains a lot of the probelms that I've been having with connections and data speed.

hello
I am not to sure if i am capped.
I have full 4 bars of hsdpa and download speed (speedtest.net app) never goes
more than 356kbps and upload 122kbps.
spoke to t-mobs customer services number of times, steel cannot get faster downloads.
when i put O2 sim - download goes up to 2445kbps and 1120 up
what is going on?
could just be that the local cell simply does not have the capacity.....
i know the old sims used to be locked to 3G and you had to request HSDPA to be added, but they should all be fully enabled now.
but it shows full 4 bars hsdps.
will try elswere and report back
i just did a quick test to compare and i have 3bars n H
nd the results are: 607kbps/350kbps
3 bars here and get 1498kbs down and 411kbs upload... that's T-Mobile UK and that is with the speedtest.net Android App... however the web site via the browser gives me a lot less - as low as 200kbs down.
ring 150 and kindly ask them to re-provision your sim as it looks like you are being capped at 384kbps. Which if I am right means you do not had HSDPA enabled on your account. Though it could just be down to congestion / coverage in your area.
This used to happen a long while ago when the introduced HSDPA enabled phones, people bought them, but their accounts weren't updated so they were not getting what they paid for.

i been told the problem could be with my service while PAC number being transfered over yesterday and today.
i think a will call them tonight and ask for re-provision sim
if no luck after that - contract will be canceled (still on 14 day cooling off period)

I spent ages with this same problem. I spoke to customer services at T-Mobile and said there was no such speed increase they could give me. I was really confused by this because I travel about quite a bit but only ever got a 350kbps connection.
What you need to do is speak to Technical Support at T-Mobile. Tell them that your only receiving 3G speeds of 350Kbps (or what ever basic 3g speeds are) and that you should be receiving HSDPA speeds. If you sound like you know what your talking about you'll get put through to a proper techy who will then be able to update your account and activate HSDPA speeds.
As soon as I had mine done my speeds went from 350-ish Kbps to 1900Kbps and beyond
Dial 150 now!!
Count yourself lucky i work in the middle of a town full of students, lucky to get 3G or H between the hours of 9am and 5pm.
Today all ive had is GPRS for data. Network capacity in Torquay sucks big time.

thanks
glad to hear that this can be resolved
I got 311kbps download speed and 389kbps upload speed at 2 pm. I took the test again at 5:45 pm using SpeedTest and it shows 1833kbps download speed and 553 upload speed. Same place same full bars (HSPA). Not sure whether the difference is due to peak times etc but glad to know that mine is not capped
Can someone help me with this?
I get about 300k with 3G and 600k with HSDPA. A quick internet search shows that HSDPA should give me something in the region of 1.8Mb-4.5Mb download and 3G should give me something in the region of 614k (which is what HDSPA at the moment is for me).
I've phoned tech support and they deny that there's a problem, while they agree that my speed is much lower than it should be (especially since I live in Birmingham City Centre an area which HSDPA coverage is marked as "excellent") they claim that there is nothing wrong that they can think of.
I was told to take the phone to a T-Mobile store to check my settings (I have been ill so haven't been) and was told that if it wasn't the settings that were the problem I would have to send the phone off for repair, with no replacement given (not only no replacement, I would have to pay for postage to send my phone to T-Mobile). I'm not on the 14 day cooling period (was a firster, 26/03/09) and NEVER had this problem on my G1 =/
Is it worth me phoning up tech support again?
At least you can get something. I dont have enough signal to send a text in most parts of my house.

As per tru call centre experiance I get different reasons every time i cal,l 1 person said that ur data setting are not right our end, the other said that i have fixed it , another said " nah sorry that ur speed ".
Has any 1 else experianced this or can i change anything on my phone to enable HSDPA " I get the H sign" as it feels like 3g speed.

Since T-Mobile adopted their "Unlimited internet" plans for Android etc contracts, they have reduced their speeds. I spoke with one of their technical support teams who confirmed it.
If you pay extra and get Web n Walk Max (usually only available on business tarrifs now) you will get full speed.
Its poo! Me and my brother had the same issue
i got around 900 at one point on 3g, recently only been getting around 500 though. On t-mobile 35 month plan too.
I get about 500kbps on H. This is quick enough for me for a mobile device! Pages load up very quickly. I can understand the need to ration the bandwidth on a cellular service, especially when the tariffs are so cheap (I pay £10 a month for unlimited internet, 100 mins, unlimited landlines).
Ok, I had the same problem..data capped at 356K.
I phoned T-Mobile and found they had the wrong phone registered to my account. they had a Nokia something not the desire.
As soon as the lady the other end change it to the correct phone (apparently thier system works this way) I got full HSDPA speeds - well 2.8M but better than before.
Seems that the shop i got the phone from (Movbilephonesdirect) just register any old phone to your SIM.
just done a test. getting 1.78mbps down and 0.38 up on H. still on original g1 android plan as only upgraded phone.

Had same problem - t-mobile could not get full speed even after changing phone on system, Canceled t-mobile contract due to could not get more than 360kbps.
i will begetting on vodafone now.
I had this problem, they told me to take it to the T-Mobile store to check it.
So I go 5 minutes down the road, albeit "Truley" in the city centre.
Do a speedcheck at the store and I'm getting 1.8mb
It seems their internet coverage is very hit and miss (either that or because I'm usually doing my speedchecks indoors )
I'm getting two different reading! In my area I can pick up full bar with HSDPA. Using speedtest app, I only get 360Kbps on HSDPA max. but when I go the browser and check speedtest in www.mobilespeedtest.com I get on average 2686Kbps using 1MB test. who is right?
I called up t-mobile before I done the test on www.mobilespreedtest.com. to complain about getting 360kbps, they done all the routing checked:which are checking my htc desire is register to my sim card, my present area postcard can pick up 3G&HSPDA, switching it to GMS only, than WCDMA only, take out the battery, and sim card, rebooting it etc but no luck after I test the speed again in speedtest app. at the end all they can say was the phone is new and they don't have the configuration setting on their system to assist me at this present time!
can someone else test their speed at www.mobilespeedtest.com pls, and compare it to speedtest app if you have that installed.

For all people on T-Mobile receiving speeds of around 360kbps on HSDPA connections:
You need to dial 150, select technical support. Tell the operator that you are only receiving 3g speeds of around 360Kbps in HSDPA location. You must advise the operator that you have done speed tests that reflect this.
They should then upgrade your account to receive HSDPA speeds.
The reason you only get 360Kbps is because you are on Web 'N' Walk which is a handset only broadband service.
T-Mobile are generally more than happy to upgrade the account to receive the higher speeds. Just make sure you speak to technical support and not customer services as they will not have a clue about this.
mine on Mobile speed test says 889kbps
Did the 1mb test and it says 2740kbps which was top of the charts!

Agree with this 100%. I had this problem a few years ago. Customer Servicves DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT HSDPA is. Ask for technical support, do not let them fob you off. The whole point of 'H' is that you are getting speeds of 360kps+, not 360kbps max.
Just done test I'm getting 3200kbps, full signal on H.

Im getting 3g speeds on HSPDA using speedtest.
Using your site, im getting speeds in EXCESS of HSPDA speeds.
Therefore I can only assume theres something wrong with your site.
Fon22 (tmobile)
i got my phone from an HTC retailer in Tottenham Court Road (London) and put my old HTC Touch Diamond 2 t-mobile sim card in it that i got from Mobilephonesdirect.
I've not done anything special on my phone or even told t-mobile and I live in a crappy town called Aldershot in the middle of the sticks but my results were
Your speed: 2657.807 Kbps
Your latency: 0.3 seconds
Transferred 1000 KB in 3.01 seconds
which isn't too bad i guess
Mobilespeedtest.com seems inaccurate. It's giving me very fast scores and I'm in a basement. I can hardley make phone calls yet I'm getting readings of 2000+ Kbps. Speedtest.net is giving a more realistic 1,300 Kbps
Web'n'walk settings
Hi guys,
totally new here and to Mobile Internet. Could someone please let me know of the settings for web'n'walk on the HTC Desire?
I tried the t-mobile.co.uk but is currently down. Also sent a text to have settings automatically sent to my phone, but response said 'Device not supported'.
I have a sim-free phone with a t-mobile solo (pay monthly) plan. Do I need to somehow activate web'n'walk? I tried some stuff* on my phone, but no luck.
Is there an icon that should appear on top of my sceen when I've got 3G coverage?
Any help appreciated!
Cheers,
Stefanos

I have the Desire on a UK TMobile tariff with Unlimited Web.
I get a strong HSPDA signal , the connection symbol is an 'H', but when i run the Speedtest.net app i only get 0.35Mbps download and 0.12Mbps upload. i have run the test a few times in different locations and these figures are about average for me.
should my download for mobile broadband not be more than that?
the tmobile websites say speeds up to 4.5Mbps, so i would have thought i would have at least got half that.
Yes they should - it is possible that your account/SIM is not correctly enabled.
Right now, with just a single bar, I'm getting 1.7Mbps up and 0.5Mbps down.
Regards,
Dave
doesn't that mean your on the lower end web and walk not the plus version i think its called?

not sure, i pre-orderd the phone thru mobilephonesdirect, and chose the £25 Unlimited Mobile Internet tariff which i assume would be full HSDPA
0.35Mbps equates to about 45 kilobytes per second, is this similar to 3G speeds?

You have to pay £5 a month more on any T-Mobile service for the Web n Walk Plus to get full speeds, because it allows tethering.

not true, i can tether no problems at the moment
With T-mobile I've found location is very much a factor. My Desire gets varying speeds depending where I am and it's consistent too. In my home I'm lucky to get HSDPA speeds at all. If I do they're about what you're getting.
Here in my permanent office in Canary Wharf on the 10th floor I'm getting 600/530 kbps. At the office with all my servers in the City, on the first floor I get 1,500/750 kbps. This is pretty consistent as I say. At London Bridge as I wait for my train home I'm back at the mid range 600/530 range.
I can take not having much data speeds at home as I'm on Wifi there as well as at my folks place.
My voice signal stays strong no matter where I am.
Android phones are supposed to be automatically put on the higher Web'n'Walk package so I hear.
Im on T mobile, with H signal and 3 bars, I just did a speed test and got:
Download: 590 kbps
Upload: 375kbps
is this normal? seems low compared to others?

I had this exact problem. Its because MobilePhonesDirect have not registered the sim correctly. T-Mobile thought it was in a Nokia 6700. Had to phone T-Mobile direct to change it and add the £5 web and walk unlimited.
MobilePhonesDirect are a crap company and do not explain any of this in their info.
First, search threads on this - TMobile & Mobile Phones Direct.
It is an old issue with MPD. They sell the phone but with a 1gb unlimited internet fair use policy, which has a significant throttle applied. You may find your phone is actually registered as a Nokia too.
You need to call Tmob Tech Support and argue that you have an Android Phone which needs a 3gb allowance (aka Web and Walk Plus.) If you look on TMob's website for their FUP details you'll find the statement about Android phones to make your case.
Don't be fobbed off, don't call the standard support (overseas and they have no idea what you're talking about), quote TMob's own statement to them and you may succeed.
I have recently had a very similar situation with a Desire from Carphone Warehouse, which was on the 1GB limit 0.35Mbps service by default.
I was advised by users in the T-Mobile forum to send an email to [email protected] explaining the situation and that the fair usage terms for Android phones specify a 3GB limit.
A couple of days later (today in fact!) I had a nice guy from T-Mobile ring me back, he explained that if you sign a contract other than direct with T-Mobile you don't get the 3GB limit but he agreed that I should have it judging by their terms, he put me on the full speed internet package and replaced the previous internet booster with an unlimited calls to landlines booster-very good service
He also said he would be in contact with CPW to make sure that they were properly advertising the terms of the contract and exactly what you get!

Actually, I have found out this issue is not to do with carphone warehouse and definitely not to do with signal strength.
I have a sim only 30 day contract direct from t-mobile for use with a sim-free desire with unlimited internet. After talking with loads of customer support and technical support at t-mobile I eventually found out that the service is indeed capped at 0.36 MB speeds with web&walk. I would have to get web&walk plus which I can only do on a 12 month contract from t-mobile to get full speed HSDPA. As I prefer the flexibility of 30 day contract (for situations just like this for example!) then I think I will try O2 now. I bought a PAYGO sim from them just to test and immediately got over 2MB download speeds. Much nicer.
The day i got mine i was onto T-mobile regarding my PAC and transfer that MPD should have done and tech support were astoundingly good. They corrected all the details supplied by MPD and setup my new account as it should have been(no one month waiting like has been suggested).
My average for the house is 850kbps(with a peak of 1027) and at my work i get 1578kbps.
I havent come close to 3gb usage so may attempt a large download to see if it can be sustained.

cheers, got it fixed. after a phone call to tmobile customer services, i was told that removing the battery while the phone was switched would definitely fix the problem!!!
i sent an email to that address and i got a phone call a couple of hours later.
I was told that they thought I had a Nokia phone so after i emailed them a copy of my invoice from mobilephonesdirect, they agreed to up me to the 3GB service! i can now downloaded at 1.8mbps, thanks again
