Deepfish - Microsoft's New Web Browser - HTC Excalibur

Go check out there site and view the demo. It is pretty slick I've already got it on my Dash and I like it. It's a bit slower but for what it does I can deal with it.
Also its a limited private beta so go download it while its still available.
http://labs.live.com/deepfish/

"Thanks you for your interest in Deepfish; At this time the tech preview has reached the limit of initially available installations. We will send you a notification if we make additional spots available at a later date."
Is the download SP specific? If not anyway we can get it?

yep. already done.
pls share!

it sounds like the iphone's browser. sp4rky, did you get it could you post it?

Stole the link from over at Howard Forums. Thanks to juiceppc.
However, please note it requires a 16 digit activation code. Bugger.

16 zeros get you a bit further but it doesnt load pages. They really don't want us to test it do they.

wm6 shipped rom???

hopefully i also get a code. the IE is not tooo good
would love to test this thingy

in the blog of the deepfish page someone is annoyed, that this is proxy rendering. does that mean, that you browse through a microsoft proxy? that would explain, why javascript, flash, secured pages and so on are not supported.
or do i understand that wrong?

I assumed that it was rendering on the device because before you go to a page you see it downloading an amount of data which looks like it downloading the html and all the images.
But, I havn't done any packet sniffing to see if it does in fact download through an MS proxy. So it might...And if it does it must also download where all the links are so you can navigate them with the cursor. And also stuff about where any form controls are. And "Bandwidth optimized rendering for faster content delivery." which suggests it is.
At the moment in my mind its 50:50 might be rendered on a server, might be on the device. Or could be a bit of both, like html downloaded direct and images via a server. Lets packet sniff and see...I'll be pretty dissapointed if it turns out to all go through MS.

I think this software is actually downloading the pages from a MS server. If you don't have the right code it won't let you pull information from the server.
I think things are pre-rendered on the server and then sent to the device in a special file format.
This is just my guess but I think that is how they are doing it.
-Dan

everything is rendered at Microsoft as told on their site:
"Deepfish is a lightweight client application that leverages a powerful server side technology for delivery of content such as web pages to a Windows Mobile device."

really wish someone can share the code with me..

is there a browser like deep fish for wm6

i tried to sign up deepfish but it has expired i have the cab someone posted but no reg key so.
is there any other browser that is similar to deepfish available for wm6
Yea it's called Picsel Browser. you can find it somewhere on here or google it
The beta version of Mini Opera has a very good page overview feature, which is a good step forward.
Browse to mini.opera.com on your phone or go to http://www.operamini.com/beta/
Picsel browser is really really bad. It was a good concept, but it really poor implementation.
The new Opera Mini beta does an ok job, but still being a beta, it is rather buggy.
I think the key issue here is WTF happened to deep fish? Microsoft pushed it aside and to the bottom of it's list like it does with ALL Windows Mobile stuff. Such a shame MS doesn't care more about the mobile market.
Deepfish wasn't anywhere close to release, it was a development "sneak-peak". I'm sure they're still working on it. As for Picsel, it was a great browser for it's time. Don't know why you think it was poorly implemented. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of what we require in a browser nowadays, but neither did any of the others when it came out. And as for Opera Mini, it only has overview and zoomed in modes, nothing in between, which makes it just as useless as all the current ones in my opinion. Still waiting for Opera Mobile 9 to come out.
I assure you, they have had how many months to make it work? And they haven't done anything with it...
Face it, MS doesn't care a bit about the mobile market, we will never see any real effort from MS. I'm pretty convinced they have 2 guys there that are their mobile development team, lol
I tried DeepFish months ago and it had some promise. But, MS would drag their feet on fixing the reported bugs. Also, the beta would not allow cookies even though this had been a priority request of the community. I dropped it due to lack of MS support.

I totally disagree. Picsel browser is a fantastic piece of software and one of the first things I install after a ROM update. Not only does it to a bang-up job for daily browsing, but it is my default viewer for all documents, especially PDF and graphic files.
OP, seriously, give it a try and see for yourself... ESPECIALLY for docs.

The problem is it is a poor implementation , the software itself is amazing !
I've used this softawre in my E680i , no doubt , it is excellent when view M$ office document and PDF file .
So the problem should be Picsel never intend to release a general version of it's software , only for specific device ...
Ummm ... I wonder what it will looks like if a Hermes version is available .
Hmm... I don't get what the problem with Picsel is?! I never experienced any problems... No crashes, no memory errors. And I use it regularly especially for web-browsing...
i googled for Picsel browser but couldnt find any download links!?
mkmonkey: we hacked out the Picsel browser from a Samsung rom some time back, and there were any device compatible versions released. However, due to copyright reasons we were asked not to distribute it. I'm sure you'll be able to track it down though.
If you do find a copy on the board, please notify me so I or the other mods can delete it.
However, IMHO, I like it very much. There are other browsers, probably Opera or NetFront, that work more "robustly", but Picsel works nicely, and makes a good light doc viewer and pdf viewer as well, so all in, it's a good compromise. I used it for several months and it made my mobile browsing experience (on the Universal, VGA, with some hacks to make it a good deal sexier) significantly more enjoyable then Pocket Internet Explorer.
V
hmm ask not to distribute huh?
well, mabye u could send me a PM with a "hidden" link, when picsel isnt watching .
edit: nvm, found it.
Problem with Picsel is that it does not always create its own internet connection. On a XV6700, you have to open a connection first (by send/receive email or opening PIE) before launching Picsel. This is a pain to do every time. For this reason, I use it only when I need to view documents close up. Also does not seem to work with flash. Why WM devices still ship with such a crappy browser is beyond me when there are so many better alternatives, but with spotty flash support.
My biggest problem with Picsel was that when you scrolled, it did not render on the fly. You had to stop for it to display the new section of the page. Anyone have a version that did it properlY?

I posted a workaround for that problem, maybe you're interested:

In that thread you find a small helper-program which you can bind to a key on your device to manually establish an internet-connection without having to start PIE.

How do i use a proxy connection with the Picsel browser?
As far as I know Picsel does not support a proxy... Which is bad because most WAP flatrates depend on proxies... :-/

Offer to Cookers

All this rapid share, yadda yadda is really getting old quick. If at least a few ROM Cookers are interested. I'll setup a space on my server to allow uploads that point back to an HTTP download section. You would be responsible for uploading the file, then posting a link here on XDA that would be a direct download link. The uploads would be handled by a passworded FTP account. I have about 400gig of download to spare per month, which should be more than enough for a bunch of Roms. Either reply here or send me a PM and we can talk.
I can also set it up, so that people can go to a root folder and find all the Roms and just pick the ones they want. Heck I can even store older Roms on the server so if someone wants an old one it will be up there.
1st point, there will be no warez posted.
2nd point, you must be a recognized cooker.
Well Cookers, drop a line and let me know.
It would end up being something like this, with each cooker having his own folder.

The only reason I could see a person leaving is if Microsoft sent a letter saying they did not like people cooking the roms and throwing a hissy fit. I have went ahead and created the folder on my remote server and am uploading stuff right now. I have not made the ftp account for uploading, however I should be able to allow open access to what I have on there in about 2hrs.

Ok the Basic is up, http://www.captfiero.com/romsYou will have to mouse over the file name if it is too long to show up, and then just look at your tool bar to see the entire name.
If anyone see's a file that should not be there. (copyrighted) Please let me know and I will remove it.
Also if a file is something "YOU" made or prefer me not to have up, let me know and I will remove it.
I will not make the upload address public so if you want files uploaded, you can send me a PM and I will upload it, or if you are an established cooker, I will give you direct upload settings.

I am sure my chef would love this feature, his connection sucks back home though, so if this is genuine I will start mirroring his stuff here too ... I guess the more mirrors the better, I been mirroring to 4shared and mediafire all this time... seems to work well
Just FYI tho, CRCinAU has at least around 100GB of traffic a day (may be he can correct me on this) ...

He said something like that somewhere.. If you think, most rom topics get 1k+ hits per day.. and say 100 download.. a 50 meg file, that's 5gig from nowhere..
And when a new rom is out..
Well I have 1200gig total traffic allowed, I use about 400gig a month for Videos and I want to keep about 400gig aside for spikes. That leaves me about 400gig to play with. I can't mirror the entire PPC world, but the latest roms and a few add ons would be fine.
heh - where abouts is this mirror located?
At the moment, my mirroring system is handling the load quite well - I have a total of 5 mirrors around the globe (1 x EU, 3 x US, 1 x AU) and the amount of traffic is much lower than it was a month ago on the one AU server because of the way things are spread out now.
The mirroring scripts will auto-detect where the user is and send them to the nearest server (or if we don't have a server near you, we randomly pick one to share the load).
You'll notice this is why I don't have direct links to anything anymore - it's all to my download script.
Even DeviceUpdate uses this script to custom-generate it's index based on where you are
That being said, as of my typing this, since 28th August, I've served:
Release 12.11 ROMs: 270 @ 40Mb each (10.8Gb)
Release 11.2 ROMs: 38 @ 41Mb each (1.55Gb)
Device Update Sessions: 1,235 (unknown download amount)
That's pretty good for less than 4 days
Some more mirrors would be nice - although mirrors in the US are probably not as helpful as the rest of the world... There's ~1Gb of content to be mirrored and count on ~100Gb per month of traffic in a lazy month.
FYI: Developers thread options: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=388819
To my knowledge it is a US based server. I am personally in Canada however it seems that US hosts are far cheaper. I'll send ya a PM with the details.

Ftp server for windows mobile

Hi all,
i just released a ftp server for mobile.
more information at
remorftpmobile dot wordpress dot com
its a first version for test only.
thank you all
Wow, good work! I'll have to keep a close watch on this project
Dave, it is already available for download, please try it!!
thanks!
Seems fine but its a bit too much stuff like the "client commands", "serial key" and stuff, I would like to have those options in another menu, not in the main screen. I want a mobile-FTPserver to be easy with a simple interface where I just have to set the portnumber login and password and see my wireless-IP. And ofcourse a Online and Offline button.
I could set it up but got some errors, don't remember. When I got connected it asked for a password.. I had set it to none on both login and pass but I couldn't get through in the win7 ftp explorer. Then I tried with the standard "user/pass" login and got through but then it told me that I didn't have sufficient rights to view the contents.
However I think you've got a nice program going here and windows mobile needs a few competent apps for this, I haven't searched much but it doesn't seem to be many FTPserver apps out there for wm..
So keep it up mate! I hope you will take my opinions into consideration The best ideas are the easiest ones!
EDIT.
And post some screens here also and mabye the cab attached?
Hi mattie,
thanks for your evaluation!! Sure i'll consider your oppinion, i'm doing it right now. I am now migrating it from lazarus LCL project to KOL project. It will become smaller, because 1,8Mega is too much. I think that it will became less than 1M.
The firtst thing is organize it in pages as you suggested.
About your connection try. You should certify yourself if the windows explorer is configured to connect in active mode. The passive mode is not implemented yet (but on the way). To set it as a active mode you can look at my page (remorftpmobile dot wordpress dot com/projects/remor-ftp-server/how-to-use/). Sorry i cant post URLs. About the problem with permission it is not normal because you are running a FAT32 file system and permission is just read only mode. Windows sometimes gives the permission error but it was not the real problem. My questions:
1) Do you tried to delete some file that was in use or something similar? What action gives you the error?
2) What is your device and WM version?
I'll post some screens and the CAB when i finish the KOL version. Should be this week!!
Releasing a free version
Hello all,
after taking some time to do this ftp, o got some other work to do which set me away from this project. But i still using it every day even with some errors
After all, i decide to open the code to share the development with all, so that way we can do a better program. I used lazarus with kol.
Attached you can find the source code and the last cab if you are not a programmer. I hope that i can find some other people with interrest on this project, so i can get motivated to continue it
I dont know any public subversion rep, if any of you have a suggestion...
that's it.
great
Nice work!!!
I wish I could support this project but unfortunately I'm a .NET-developer and not very common with Pascal/Delphi.

[Q] Will WP7 Support Skyfire

Before you start bashing me for starting this thread. Note Ive Search And Haven't Seen This Come Up Yet.
Now As Much As I love Skyfire, Im not seeing a whole lot of support for it from WP7. Someone Please bring me up to par with whats going on?
Heres the Only Info Ive found on this and its not much http ://support.skyfire.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5513
Skyfire could actually function reasonbly well on WP7 (due to the rendering being done by Skyfire's servers) and would be allowed by Microsoft. It's just up to Skyfire on whether they want to make it or not.
Ok thanks. I guess ill have to wait and see.
I read something awhile ago where SkyFire said they couldn't make a SkyFire version for WP7 due to lack of Native Code. I'm sure they could write their own code instead of just borrowing Microsofts, but that is where they stand now.

I know Opera said that but I hadn't seen Skyfire.
I don't really see why they couldn't. They don't do any rendering on the device. They have servers that pull the web page on your behalf and transcode it into a format that's pre-rendered and easier on the device. I would think this would be pretty easy in XNA or maybe even silverlight. Now a browser that actually decodes and renders the page all on it's own, yea that will be much slower without native code. It's a good thing the built in browser doesn't suck.
They could probably get a working version of skyfire on a device but it wouldn't have multitasking ability like IE does so why would anyone want to use it? I think they will eventually have multiple browsers but I think it'll be after multitasking is fully unleashed.

Yes, they are. However, third parties are limited to using managed code (Silverlight and XNA) which would make writing a browser implausible if not impossible. However, with browsers that perform the actual page rendering on a remote server and basically send a capture of the page back to the phone to display, they should be able to make one just fine. Creating an HTML and JavaScript engine in C#, particularly with the limitations that WP7 has on top of that, would be out of the question.

[Q] Any luck with torrent apps?

Was hoping to find something like Torrent Fu.
Anyway I installed uView utorrent and FSSI Torrent 7 on a free trial. Couldn't get either to work. Then looked at uController but it needs some .net 4 program on my PC to work.
What the hell is going on. I'm not cheap. I will pay £1.99 for a torrent app that works with isohunt.com. Please help.
What about Torrent Remote and Torrential.
Maybe it's my fault.
In uView settings - Your Torrent host I entered my IP address.
Sorry everyone. Its midnight here in London.
I was running utorrent 2.0.4. Normally it updates itself on startup. But this time it didn't update to 2.2. Got 2.2 now. Everything fine.
BTW what torrent app do you like?

Definitely uController. The service running on your PC makes it stand out above the others.
The service for uController is there to provide additional information above and beyond what you'd normally get with the uTorrent webUI.
Namely 'live' tile updates that show how many torrents are currently downloading (in the current build); and
A toast notification whenever a new torrent is added. You can restrict this this so it doesn't ding between certain hours (in the development build).
Admittedly being the developer of uController, I'm biased, but I think those two things make installing a small service on your PC an acceptable proposition.
uController doesn't allow the addition of torrents right now, but it's already implemented in development (via RSS feeds).

Can you just make a Fu Torrent clone? No PC software to install. Stop, remove, and pause of torrents. Search torrents available from Isohunt and TPB within the app. And of course add torrents.
This is all I'm asking for. But I'm willing to pay good money to someone who can deliver.

Sorry, i won't be doing it. I built this for my own uses, so I build it to suit my needs.
There are 3 other apps that might suit your needs.
I thought they said the microsoft was going to allow torrent apps in wp7. Only apps allowed would be allowed to view your torrents, but not add new ones.
+1 for uController, the live tile works well and the service running on your main torrent pc isn't a big deal.
Looking forward to the update that will allow the adding of torrents from rss feeds. A question for the developer: does this mean you can view the rss feed and select the torrents you want? Is it the service app or the device app downloading the torrent?
Oh yeah, and two small cosmetic things; when you run the app the "connecting to xxx.xxx" message at the top is overlapping the uController title (it looks a little untidy), and the app doesn't remember which group of torrents you were looking at last time you ran the app (ie downloading, or seeding, or what have you), it always reverts to All Torrents (which is a bit slow when you have a lot of torrents).
Great so far though, you wouldn't know how often the other torrent apps are going to get updated but this one is on version 1.2 already.

You view the RSS feed on the device, but the downloading is done on your PC. Nothing is downloaded on the device (given how small the storage is on some of them, and no background apps, it would be virtaully impossible anyway).

Yeah, I know. It is designed to mirror other apps that have the loading information across the top of the page, even if it overlaps with other information. Using the light theme it works better as it has a background tint... I might move it centrally like I have done with the RSS feed progress bars.

I added this in, however there was some weird behaviour happening. It would work well on the All, Downloading and Paused pivots but would crash out with the stopped and seeding pivots. There is no obvious reason for it, so I had to take it out to do the release.
I'll try to nut it out.

Grabbed the 1.3 update this morning and have been trying it out over lunch. I added some TV Show RSS feeds to the service app this morning before heading out, and I am happy to report that I can see these RSS feeds on my handset and add the torrents that I want from the feed. Works perfectly. I have also been able to set an upload limit for my torrents, great! If I can add one tiny suggestion, that each torrent in the RSS feed might also show the date it was added to the feed? Just in case I end up downloading an episode from a previous week if there was no new episode this week... or would it even be possible to have a * or some other indicator beside a feed that has a new torrent available? thanks

1.3 was a fantastic update thanks! But the toast notification for new torrents being added: how does this work? Does the RSS feature automatically add new torrents from the RSS feeds you've used previously and then send a notification?
By the way, I've rated the app on the marketplace but it looks like the marketplace reviews are segmented between regions. I'm in Ireland so there are only about a dozen ratings across the entire Marketplace! Bit of a bummer really since it's not possible to see rating and reviews from other regions.

If I can add one tiny suggestion, that each torrent in the RSS feed might also show the date it was added to the feed?

Shouldn't be a problem to add the date. The feed should contain that information already, it's just a matter of putting it into the UI.
edit: Done.

Nice to hear. Basically it just works for any torrent added during the time period. It's mainly designed to capture torrents automatically added via the RSS function built into uTorrent. It doesn't use the feeds you've added into the client.

Then can you provide clear instructions on how to use it as I can't get it to connect.
Do I configure my WebGUI in utorrent as well or what?

To get started, you really need to know how webUI in uTorrent works.
In essence, if you can get uTorrent and WebUI set up to the extent that you are able to:
(a) Access WebUI from any other computer on your home network
(b) Access WebUI from a computer outside your network via an external IP address. ie from your mobile phone, or a computer at work
...then you will have no trouble setting up uController. Bear in mind that all the uTorrent remote access apps on the marketplace will require that you can configure and setup WebUI. See this for instructions on getting set up.
Once that's done, and you can definitely connect to webUI, follow the instructions pdf for uController here and you'll be grand.

Yes, the service connects to the WebUI so it needs to be set up. Instructions are available and linked in the post above.
The pdf needs to be updated to take into account the features added since release, but the setup should be adequately explained. If you're having any specific problems, let me know.
So we have some torrent apps... that says something about Marketplace approval and copywright issues. So where are the emulators?
