[Q] Any luck with torrent apps? - Windows Phone 7 General

Was hoping to find something like Torrent Fu.
Anyway I installed uView utorrent and FSSI Torrent 7 on a free trial. Couldn't get either to work. Then looked at uController but it needs some .net 4 program on my PC to work.
What the hell is going on. I'm not cheap. I will pay £1.99 for a torrent app that works with isohunt.com. Please help.
What about Torrent Remote and Torrential.
Maybe it's my fault.
In uView settings - Your Torrent host I entered my IP address.

Sorry everyone. Its midnight here in London.
I was running utorrent 2.0.4. Normally it updates itself on startup. But this time it didn't update to 2.2. Got 2.2 now. Everything fine.
BTW what torrent app do you like?

Definitely uController. The service running on your PC makes it stand out above the others.

The service for uController is there to provide additional information above and beyond what you'd normally get with the uTorrent webUI.
Namely 'live' tile updates that show how many torrents are currently downloading (in the current build); and
A toast notification whenever a new torrent is added. You can restrict this this so it doesn't ding between certain hours (in the development build).
Admittedly being the developer of uController, I'm biased, but I think those two things make installing a small service on your PC an acceptable proposition.
uController doesn't allow the addition of torrents right now, but it's already implemented in development (via RSS feeds).

Can you just make a Fu Torrent clone? No PC software to install. Stop, remove, and pause of torrents. Search torrents available from Isohunt and TPB within the app. And of course add torrents.
This is all I'm asking for. But I'm willing to pay good money to someone who can deliver.

Sorry, i won't be doing it. I built this for my own uses, so I build it to suit my needs.
There are 3 other apps that might suit your needs.

I thought they said the microsoft was going to allow torrent apps in wp7. Only apps allowed would be allowed to view your torrents, but not add new ones.

+1 for uController, the live tile works well and the service running on your main torrent pc isn't a big deal.
Looking forward to the update that will allow the adding of torrents from rss feeds. A question for the developer: does this mean you can view the rss feed and select the torrents you want? Is it the service app or the device app downloading the torrent?
Oh yeah, and two small cosmetic things; when you run the app the "connecting to xxx.xxx" message at the top is overlapping the uController title (it looks a little untidy), and the app doesn't remember which group of torrents you were looking at last time you ran the app (ie downloading, or seeding, or what have you), it always reverts to All Torrents (which is a bit slow when you have a lot of torrents).
Great so far though, you wouldn't know how often the other torrent apps are going to get updated but this one is on version 1.2 already.

You view the RSS feed on the device, but the downloading is done on your PC. Nothing is downloaded on the device (given how small the storage is on some of them, and no background apps, it would be virtaully impossible anyway).

Yeah, I know. It is designed to mirror other apps that have the loading information across the top of the page, even if it overlaps with other information. Using the light theme it works better as it has a background tint... I might move it centrally like I have done with the RSS feed progress bars.

Thanks.

v1.3 has hit the market place, you should see the update available soon. The major additions are the ability to add torrents and push notifications when a new torrent is added.
I relation to your enhancements.

I've tidied this up a bit by adding some chrome background to the text. I tried it in the middle of the page, but it looked worse. The chrome helps the untidiness I think.

I added this in, however there was some weird behaviour happening. It would work well on the All, Downloading and Paused pivots but would crash out with the stopped and seeding pivots. There is no obvious reason for it, so I had to take it out to do the release.
I'll try to nut it out.

Grabbed the 1.3 update this morning and have been trying it out over lunch. I added some TV Show RSS feeds to the service app this morning before heading out, and I am happy to report that I can see these RSS feeds on my handset and add the torrents that I want from the feed. Works perfectly. I have also been able to set an upload limit for my torrents, great! If I can add one tiny suggestion, that each torrent in the RSS feed might also show the date it was added to the feed? Just in case I end up downloading an episode from a previous week if there was no new episode this week... or would it even be possible to have a * or some other indicator beside a feed that has a new torrent available? thanks

That looks much tidier indeed thanks! and the "loading torrents" dialogue is a great addition (it was tricky in previous releases to know if the app was busy or not)

Cheers for giving it a go, but actually this update makes torrents appear much faster at launch, so remembering the previous pivot isn't as much of a big deal IMO?

1.3 was a fantastic update thanks! But the toast notification for new torrents being added: how does this work? Does the RSS feature automatically add new torrents from the RSS feeds you've used previously and then send a notification?
By the way, I've rated the app on the marketplace but it looks like the marketplace reviews are segmented between regions. I'm in Ireland so there are only about a dozen ratings across the entire Marketplace! Bit of a bummer really since it's not possible to see rating and reviews from other regions.

Shouldn't be a problem to add the date. The feed should contain that information already, it's just a matter of putting it into the UI.
edit: Done.

Nice to hear. Basically it just works for any torrent added during the time period. It's mainly designed to capture torrents automatically added via the RSS function built into uTorrent. It doesn't use the feeds you've added into the client.

To get started, you really need to know how webUI in uTorrent works.
In essence, if you can get uTorrent and WebUI set up to the extent that you are able to:
(a) Access WebUI from any other computer on your home network
(b) Access WebUI from a computer outside your network via an external IP address. ie from your mobile phone, or a computer at work
...then you will have no trouble setting up uController. Bear in mind that all the uTorrent remote access apps on the marketplace will require that you can configure and setup WebUI. See this for instructions on getting set up.
Once that's done, and you can definitely connect to webUI, follow the instructions pdf for uController here and you'll be grand.

lekki said:

Yes, the service connects to the WebUI so it needs to be set up. Instructions are available and linked in the post above.
The pdf needs to be updated to take into account the features added since release, but the setup should be adequately explained. If you're having any specific problems, let me know.

So we have some torrent apps... that says something about Marketplace approval and copywright issues. So where are the emulators?

hopefully i also get a code. the IE is not tooo good
would love to test this thingy
in the blog of the deepfish page someone is annoyed, that this is proxy rendering. does that mean, that you browse through a microsoft proxy? that would explain, why javascript, flash, secured pages and so on are not supported.
or do i understand that wrong?
I assumed that it was rendering on the device because before you go to a page you see it downloading an amount of data which looks like it downloading the html and all the images.
But, I havn't done any packet sniffing to see if it does in fact download through an MS proxy. So it might...And if it does it must also download where all the links are so you can navigate them with the cursor. And also stuff about where any form controls are. And "Bandwidth optimized rendering for faster content delivery." which suggests it is.
At the moment in my mind its 50:50 might be rendered on a server, might be on the device. Or could be a bit of both, like html downloaded direct and images via a server. Lets packet sniff and see...I'll be pretty dissapointed if it turns out to all go through MS.
I think this software is actually downloading the pages from a MS server. If you don't have the right code it won't let you pull information from the server.
I think things are pre-rendered on the server and then sent to the device in a special file format.
This is just my guess but I think that is how they are doing it.
-Dan
everything is rendered at Microsoft as told on their site:
"Deepfish is a lightweight client application that leverages a powerful server side technology for delivery of content such as web pages to a Windows Mobile device."
really wish someone can share the code with me..

RSS Reader recommendations

I am looking for a mobile RSS Reader. Do not know much about them. am using pRSSreader and Viigo. Brand new to both but am really liking the feeds. Obviously free is nice, but would pay if it was a good reader. Want the full article, offline ability, ease of adding links, so new that I do not even know what i want - other than not to spend a lot of time entering links into a bad piece of software.
WM 6.1 Pro
Do a search for YomoMedia. Works great, looks nice, and you can manage your subscriptions from your PC as well as from the phone. And it's free.
i like that i can organize my feeds on the desktop. it has been difficult getting the feed urls entered into my device. with yomomedia, can you download the entire article and look at them offline?

I'm testing it right now (great find by the way, thanks Commdr64!!), and on the few feeds I've tested so far, the full version of the article has been included with the downloaded updates, available when you're offline.
It's a nice clean interface, runs smooth, and I like that you can manage your subscriptions from the desktop
Correction
Ok, I've found some feeds now that don't have the full article downloaded for offline viewing...they download in the app, but only when you click a link for the full article. I can't seem to find any settings that change that behavior, so I'm guessing it's dictated by the feed and not the app.
Right now I'm using the default RSS reader installed which works great, but Yomomedia sounds also very interesting.
I use SPB News (Full Text News Reader ) it's pretty good here's a link , and it has a Free Trial. I use alot of SPB products.

RSS reader
I spend almost an hour in a train on my way to work/home and need a reader that can retrieve articles for offline reading. So recently I spent my whole weekend testing about 13 rss readers and podcast catchers - all i could find on the web. thought i would share my experience. I actually installed all of them and compared one by one. In my opinion the best reader is Egress and it is far superior than any of the readers both by the number of features it has and also customizations you can do. The only feature that this reader does not have compared to all others is that it is not designed to sync with online/desktop readers. I do not need that because in the train i read specific feeds only and leave the rest for desktop reading. It has not been updated for some time (i think it went to android), but even now its touch interface and visual looks are very modern. It is not free... The second best is Yomomedia, though it installs few things on device even though you choose Storage card.
wondering if you tried pRSSreader? it is not verying finger friendly and it is pretty stripped down. but i am a stock WM person - no too interested in the flash. but so far i like thr pRSSreader. don't know enough to know all the features. i do like that i can flag and save the likes to delicious to look at later on my desktop.

Yes, I tried pRSSreader as well and still have it on my device. However, I do not need an article to be saved for further reading in delicious (actually, i do not think such option is available in pRSSreader , as far as i can remember viigo has it).
egress is actually not flashy at all, just very convenient for use with fingers: scrolling up and down or left and right is well thought and produces intuitive results. The real winner is actually customizations available in its Options menu. For example, pRSSreader allows you define global setting on how to retrieve offline/webcontent. Egress allows both global and per feed customizations. You can organize your feeds, say, using Google reader and then export opml file to egress. I believe you can get 30-day trial version of egress, just try it.
how do you think egress compares with pRSSreader?
i save the feeds/urls in delicious because it is an easy way for me to flag them for later review on my desktop.

I recommend MusicShark a GrooveShark Client

I am not the dev but there is a free GrooveShark client out in the MarketPlace so I thought it should get more exposure.
It's very functional and just needs a tiny bit more polish. The sound quality is great even through 3G.
MOD EDIT: Please post app recommendations in WP7 General, as the Apps and Games section is for app release's only as stated in the sticky I made.
THanks man. Been waiting for a GrooveShark client.
Awesome. Seems to work great over 3G though it needs a better way of adding multiple search results to playlists/queue.
Nice. And free !
The interface just needs to be more polished indeed.
Interesting. Too bad Grooveshark isn't going to support WP7. They are open to the idea so with enough support you never know. Keep bugging them via forums and twitter.

I think I might have it at home. Pity I restored my phone to NoDo not realising I couldn't unlock it again.
bah, I hope GS isnt deliberately flagging these clients if they dont plan to produce their own. Methinks they made a deal with a competitor :/
Here's the xap
I installed the xap file on my windows phone (E900 7.10.7720.68), but it didn't work. Loading failed with a message, "An error was presented, you have internet conectivity?"
So, I decompile the xap and found out, the server to get the grooveshark data from grooveshark's server is no longer working.
Can anyone use this app?
For people who really love music,
I would recommend the "The Hype" app for WP7.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145616
It gives access to all the Hype Machine catalog. Hypem.com is a great & free music blog aggregator.
You can make a search, select the songs you like, make a playlist (which will also be available on your PC).
for instance... Here's my playlist (indie, The Smiths, Mountain Goats, Josh Rouse, New Order, Wedding Presents, Balmhorea, etc...): http://hypem.com/#!/eric_sc2

I'm pretty sure FourSquare uses user names, so you probably do NOT want to list your (I'm assuming) device Live Account email address on a public forum...
Please edit your post and list the user name instead, for your own sanity's sake.

If this forum required a login to view posts it probably wouldn't be a big deal. But these threads show up in searches and the pages get cached. I doubt the amount of junk and scammer/phishin mail that can result form posting your email address on a public open forum is worth meeting some random forum hoppers on foursquare.
That's just my opinion, and of course I'm just looking out for him...

I felt this initially too, but the more I use 4sq, the more I like it. They also make improvements to it that actually IMPROVE it.
Also, loved that I can create new locations using the app and not having to go through the website.

The original Foursquare app that came for WP7 was very slow, weak and lacking features. When 4th & Mayor came out, Foursquare removed theirs and advised people to start using 4&M, which we did and we loved it.
But now they came with this new Foursquare app which is just amazing... shows whats possible with WP7, and I for one am loving it.
Definitely prefer 4th and Mayor because its simple and fast. I don't think the panorama view lends itself well to long lists of locations. Pivots are much better at displaying loads of information in a more logical, filtered view.
That being said, the new official app is nice, but just a bit overdone and flashy IMO. Plus its still slow despite some recent updates.

I think Microsoft should stop fighting Google over their YouTube app and just fund these guys as they're making an amazing job.
The trial is fully functional but really they deserve to be paid for what they get you.
Enjoy

While I do love lazyworm, MS should never stop fighting as there is still no way to select which app is the default YT launcher and I'm sick of copy pasta. Plus its just crappy business practices on Googles part.
Just updated. Its great , but it seems like they're trying too hard to copy the Android App.

it makes no sense that I must download the fake YouTube app just to launch videos posted on websites.
Nice, it didn't update itself and now I have to pay for it again...
Edit: nevermind, it works now like it should

I think you're getting this backwards, maybe it's android getting too much inspiration from Metro. Just look at their new marketplace

Actually you're right. That said, if they do get the green light form Google I would like them to fund Lazyworms and integrate it as an official app rather than starting from scratch. At least Lazyworms gives the app full support, the same cannot be said from whoever did the official twitter and facebook apps for instance.

You never have to pay twice for an app you've purchased. Mine updated just fine.

So you bought LazyTube and it updated to Metrotube? That was something I'm curious about.

are you serious? This is almost a replica of the Android YouTube app. Which is great, Metrotube offers more widgets/tiles.
I like how the subscription tile shows pictures instead of a number. I just don't like the heart, but I'll live with it. Also like how I can read comments and watch the video, reminds me of Android. Good update. They even responded to my questions.

Actually I've just picked up my girlfriend's Nexus S and MetroTube is nothing like the Android YouTube app except maybe for having comments just below the video. Very odd that we don't see it the same way
Metrotube is nice about the best 3rd party app I have. This thing runs so smooth, you would think it was built into the OS

I would love to pay to buy this apps but my country is still currently not supported by MS in marketplace and Zune, would not like a fake address live id approach, and would like LazyWorm to have another payment channel like moBudget (pay with paypal and download the trial version and it will work like the paid version...)
Forget it. All players seem to have a portrait video player with the ability to swipe left and right while the video still plays. They seem to have came up with the same idea on different sides of the earth.
Lazytube portrait mode didn't allow reading of comments while watching a video, the video played but you couldn't read and watch at the same time. This update made it possible to read and comment just Like another famous player. Yeah, its nothing like that other player though, I'll be blind.

i would really like to hear it from MS and google about what disagreement they are having. MS is bringing youtube to Xbox. So Google is not completly blocking them out. If google is blocking just for WP, isn't it abuse of market leadership? Google is already under fire for such behavior, I don't believe that's the case.
If anyone has links to any good, accurate information, please let me know.
Having said this, Metrotube is amazingly well done app. It deserves the name Metrotube as it beautifully adheres to metroUI.
Just downloaded this. Much better looking than the HTC Youtube (not that I complained about it).
Does anyone know if the free trial actually expires? Does it have all the features of the paid version? Perhaps the benefits to purchasing is gaining access to updates?
^ who knows. No one ever gave a definitive answer. I'll take metroTube anyway.
It probably is Google though, as there is absolutely no Google apps on this OS. However you have to look at the direct competition to Google which is Bing. So, its complex.

no differences, and it doesn't expire. You will get updates. He said the .99 version is to help them out.

As far as I'm informed there are no limits or registrations. Trial and paid version are currently absolutely identical. You should be able to receive updates as well. The only "limitation" about the current offer is: it won't last forever. Means if you want the full app for free, better get it now.
But honestly, I'd pay those $0.99 anyway (if I hadn't already done it months ago). In my opinion LazywormApps deserve a lot more than that.
I looked up the youtube API restrictions... I think this might be the reason
What can I do if I'm running into quota limits?
The following information may help you to avoid exceeding quota limits:
•The quota system ties API usage to a specific developer key, which means your application is less likely to be flagged for quota violations if it specifies a developer key in its API requests.
•Different types of API operations count differently toward quota calculations. Generally, you can make more frequent HTTP GET requests to retrieve data than POST, PUT or DELETE requests to modify data.
•Your application should avoid making API requests that do not originate from user interaction. For example, continuous requests that are a part of a background synchronization or bulk import process are likely to trigger quota violations.
If the API does return a quota violation error, your code will need to detect the error and handle it appropriately. we recommend that you stop all API calls from your application for 10 minutes to "reset" your quota. When you resume making API calls, scale back on the frequency of your requests.
If you are still running into the quota limits within these guidelines, and you feel that the quota is throttling legitimate traffic from your site, please contact us.

So I think Google is not willing to remove the limit for MS. If MS makes a dafault Youtube client, it is very likely to hit the limit as all WP users will be using it rather than other apps like Metrotube.
Other than that, I didn't really find any other restriction in the API.
The description in Marketplace says that the paid version supports HD video streaming. I'm guessing the trial is HQ only.
That said, my Focus seems to stutter even on HQ :/ Anyone else have that issue? Maybe I've dropped it one too many times, heh.
