Messenger for Linux/WM5/WM6... (Video-Conferencing, voice calls) - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

I Wonder if there is any Messenger software for Linux/WM5/WM6 and can do voice calls/Video-Conferencing using the build in Video cam as a web cam without using the 3G Video Call ?
I mean like doing Video call with yahoo, and MSN, but use build in Video cam as web cam? Because I think it's such a waste to have a Video cam on the Universal but not be able to use it as a web Cam doesn't matter about FPS though, at least get to use it....

If you want to use your pda as a webcam (and still use msn/yahoo/etc from your pc), check out Ateksoft WebCamera Plus here: http://www.ateksoft.com/webcamplus.html
It works both when ppc is cradled, and through wifi. Although I haven't managed to make it work on a Qtek9000 with WM6, on WM5 it worked like a charm

Note that it requires a desktop computer.
As far as purely WM-based applications are concerned, Portrait 3.0 (check out my review posted to the General forum) is able to use the built-in camera - but only the rear and not the front one on WM devices with two cameras. That is, it's pretty much useless unless you use a mirror
Unfortunately, there're no messenger apps with camera capabilities (see my IM Bible, crossposted to the General forum, for more info if interested)

ya, that require a computer, and somehow I can't make it work too... it just won't display anything after selecting the driver.
anyway, ya, I am trying to find a software that will do "purely WM-based applications with web cam capabilities" thanks for the info on Protrait 3.0
I will certainly check it out kind of doesn't matter if it uses only the rear camera, oh well if it can use both, it would be great but things don't always work out the way we want it now searching for Protrait 3.0, hope I can use it to connect to desktop. and Thanks for the info !!

Thanks Menneisyys, it works ! it works ! it works ! it works !
the video is good, but the interface is slow though, maybe I should flash the ROM or something, since I am still using the original ROM; most of the phone operation delay for 2 seconds or more....
For those who are interested... here is the link -----> http://research.microsoft.com/mcom/portrait/ But somehow firefox and opera can't download the file, but only IE... Is this the best M$ or Bill can do to get people use IE ? heh heh

i'm using a wm6 rom and it's works perfect
i have tested it over wifi and sync cable and both work
i didn't have to change a single setting plug and play
I't even works on my c500

Jasjar/Qtek 9000 owner lets rally!!!!!

Hi every one. I believe I'm pretty much like most of the people on this forum, a proud owner of a Imate Jasjar. unfortunately I use it in the US with T-Mobile. Needless to say that under such conditions the jasjar is almost useless because of the abscence of a reliable 3G network. I was wondering why there isn't any developer or company working to develop an Instant messaging software that would support the use of the front camera on the Qtek 9000/Jasjar? I completely understand that represent a lot of work and certainly don't expect it to be free. I'd find it normal to pay for it. I believe if we can afford a $700 phone we could certainly afford a $30-50 application without causing serious harm to our wallet. I would think the market would be significantly big enough concidering that the Jasjar and the Htc tytn both have a front camera, and I don't mention all the Nokia phone with comparable features.
So I just wanted to share my views on the subject and hope, since this forum gathers quite a few brilliant people that my message would be heard. So if anybody is willing to take the plunge!!???

PDA2K camera as WebCam

Hello,
can i use my pda2k cam as webcam ??
Thanks in advance for your replies...
No. I have read threads on this before (like on other forums I think) 'cos I got sick of carryin so many devices. It would be wicked if it could but I think the problem lies in the fact that the USB connection isn't quick enough.
I'm sure my SE P800 worked as a webcam :\ Perhaps I'm imaining things.
There is a way to make your Blue Angel work similar to a web cam. The program uploads a new image every x seconds to an FTP server using the integrated camera software.
You can create your own solution such as an HTML page that refreshes periodically to update the image. I think the software supplying a sample file. However, you cannot obtain a true live webcam experience.
If you need the software, PM me or I'll try attaching it here.

I got a USB camera for my girlfriend. You can get enough throughput from USB to support 640x480, but USB really does have to be at full throttle then. Anything more (like DV) and you're way out of the region USB can handle. You might well have managed it on your phone.
I can't see any reason why the Qtek 9090 *couldn't* support that, but I'm thinking it's a problem with how Pocket PCs are made accessible by Windows. I very much doubt the default ActiveSync drivers have an interface for it, and I don't really see the market for writing your own PPC driver for what is a niche request, especially when you can get very good web cams like the Logitech Quickcam 4000 for 60 quid.
Chris
I got several requests to send the software I used for webcam on PPC.
There are 2 programs I saw. One I tried and the other I didn't.
The program I tried is called Webcam for Pocket PC (PpcWebcam.zip) and its free. The other one is (MobileHomeCamPPC.exe).
I recommend you try the first one first, and it works great.
I attached the 2 files in one zip file.
The download page for PpcWebcam is http://www.zone1.de/latest.html and I guess there's a newer version but I provided a 100%-working one.
i get an error saying its not a valid win32 application, how do i get round this?? :?:

There are some things that throw me off:
1.he post says the pictures where taken with an 8525. I don't know of any canera phone that has that bright of flash.
secondly, why is there a glare from a flash on every part of the phone but the screen.
On one picture you can see what looks like a bad edge when editing.

Conspiracy?
No, wait that's not a flash in the sky, it's a flourescent light fixture. These pictures must have been taken in an office. The glare is from the light overhead and in one picture due to the angle you can actually see the next light fixture over.
HTC GUY works for HTC, he is an engineer and I would trust any pictures that he posts.

The only thing that throws that off is how the light concentrates to the left. Even our halogen lights at my office do not beam that direct. That is hitting the device like direct sunlight vs a flourescent light as they light more evenly.
But I dont care really, I just like the pics and how WM6 may/does look.

Yeah, how do we get WM6 on our Dash?? I want this so bad!
almost everyone wants wm6. you'll just have to wait.
Hmmm, check out Geek's coverage...

... that device looks quite familiar don't ya think?! It is confirmed... WMP6 is on the Dash... now will it come to us?!
http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/11/windows-mobile-6-out-supports-new-resolutions-too/
Looks like we're officially going to see WM6 on the Dash in the upcoming months. Can't wait!
WM6 is released in the wild...
People...not sure if this thread is still active but those who read this and want wm6 (all be it a beta) on their phone real bad will love this...
Do a little searching for it on ... i'm not sure if the rules allow this but it's harmless really..search the major torrent search engines and ye shall find it. How do I know? Look who created it ;p (Hint: This major torrent search engine starts with a "D"...come on if you can't figure that one out your shouldn't be upgrading your phone in the first place -hehe)
Anyways...this is a UI Test build and it's pretty darn stable. It's been running on my dash for over a week now and no major bugs. Windows Live screen is a tad buggy (when attempting to log into Live the home screen gives error message and you have to change back to another screen...it works some times but it's far from perfect). Full HTML email (exchange 2007 only and some webmail..like hotmail and verizon dsl email... give you full HTML messages). The OZ chat client finally includes Messenger in the selection. My Bluetooth headest is a moto HS810 and it works...just a bit buggy...
What else...Oh yeah office mobile (editing capability) are back! Word, Excel, and Powerpoint and they work great so far. The new IE browser does have a search on the cool new "homepage"...though I haven't really found the quit/exit option...I have to kill it through the task manager...
Last thing which may just be because this is Beta still but I noticed that more application memory was being used on the average without any programs running. On a fresh boot there is more memory, but after loading a few and even after shutting them all down through task manager the memory doesn't seem to go back up past 10,000KB free...if you get it that high your lucky. Activesync works great even in Vista's mobile control center thing.
The only thing that isn't working is the Tmobile account WAP page when attempting to access via the NEW WINWAP app...it stated that this version isn't supported yet and if you are a tester you need to call them up and register in order to access via this version)
All in all a great release for those who just can't wait anymore for the stupid thing to get released. However it's 100% confirmed that the Tmobile Dash will be getting this upgrade to its current users for free...thus why I don't feel bad that you can find it in the wild...
I take no credit for this being released in any way! I found it on some lowly forum in which I don't even remember where. It wasn't very easy to find so I am helping people find it so they can test it.
gee i wonder where that was.
it was posted here first!

The reason that the memory usage is so high is primarily because of the additional T-Mobile apps that intercept SMS's (for IM's, e-mail, etc), as well as My-5, and some other T-Mobile stuff.
I'm guess that they also may have changed the way memory management is handled in this, because even when i get down to near zero free, i can still do everything just fine, without any extra lag or error messages. It could be something like how Vista caches things in RAM and actually has a goal of filling up as much as possible with cached items (which is a good thing).

The MOST annoying thing about WM6?

For me it would be the fact that it STILL has
the same greyish, blocky scrollbars as Windows 3.1 had....
You'd imagine they would have revamped those by now...
That is a minor quibble. Personally I do not see anything wrong with WM6... yet.
Most of us here are still happy that at least we are getting WM6
If anything I had a bit of quibble with Opera and its interaction with WM5\WM6 but then again, that is a software issue.
Yeah, if that's all you have to complain about in WM6, I think you're LOOKING for things to complain about.
Like the "Error Syncronizing" problem in Outlook, that no one but me seems to have seen; or the Calendar problem where Month is always the default view, no matter what's chosen in Options... These are legit. problems, not just complaints.

Try UIQ for a month, you`ll hate PPC
WM6 has a lot to learn, as I see it on WM6 we have many stolen UIQ features.
Microsoft still has a lot to learn, a WM6 device just wont work as a normal phone and switch to "PDA Mode" when you need it.
UIQ has done it, you have a perfectly working phone with access to all the main features, with a flip of a switch you can transfer yourself to a fully featured PDA.
hm, the most annoying thing you say.
yeah , can think of 1 - a minor issue yet very annoying.
the busy signal comes out of the loudspeaker (as it did in wm5) !
i hate it. yeah of course you can delete the signal or change ir to a very quiet one, yet ...

you are using UIQ3 - don't know that OS yet.
stolen features?
what about the new "week view" of calender? it`s entire functionality is copied from UIQ 2.1, what about the softkeys finally they copied the ability to navigate the device features?
stability, I used a p900 - for 2 years - 3!! HR(and I was to BLAME)
PPC? - cant count any more, a buggy program can crash your device until the next HR.
most of WM6 design targets declared where for a better use:
stability
speed
usability
Hmm, I had a P900 and the P910 (still use it from time to time) My friend has the Sony P990 (UIQ3). If you want to see problems with UIQ3 use a P990, admittedly most of it is hardware related but even on the M600 you will find problems.
The only way you can compare these two is to only run them on default software and never install 3rd party apps!! I have run 3rd party apps on my P900/P910 and had to do many soft resets etc even with popular apps (Sman etc)
I am so glad that I moved from UIQ(X) to WM(X) as just the increase in productivity software available to me has made it worth it alone! BTW my M3100 running the latest variant of WM6 is rock solid.
Oh & haven't you heard the expression there's nothing new under the sun. Everybody 'steals' from everybody else.

Well I havent taken the plunge to WM6 yet, still on WM5, but yes... having migrated from UIQ on several previous phones, I find WM to be an abomination of undocumented, overcompicated and non-integrated bloatware.
The saving features, however, are that it's the only OS I can get on such great hardware (Hermes), and there is such a massive user base that like Windows for PCs, there is loads of great software and support from forums like this.

SSSHHH! You were not supposed to reveal that information!
But it is true... The look on the face of my GF when I have to restart my phone before I can make a call or when everything freezes when adding an appointment....
On my original post: the scrollbars might be a minor thing but it is something I see almost everytime I use this machine.
although I have not used UIQ for a while last one was uiq 2.1 i think or was it 3?
It was a very good os and stable.
but doesnt look as pretty as windows mobile.
Although its better programed and runs better on lower speed processors,
reminds me of the linux v windows situation.
pros and cons to both.
I like windows its pleasing to the eye
I'm sure this can be fixed, but i've search and haven't found a solution yet, so here goes, the most annoying thing about WM6 for is:
In WM5 (standard T-Mobile UK rom) i had a link in Start Menu for "Running Programs" this took me straight to Start->Settings->System->Memory->Running Programs, i would like to create a link on my WM6 that takes me straight here too, but i dont know how?
the thing I hate so far is they (in WM6) still dont allow you to quickley dial a meeting number.... like I used to do in a blackberry...... thats the only thing I find really annoying...
I sould be able to choose a reminder and if there is a number value in there I should be able to choose it to dail.....
one fo my biggest complaints.
in s60 phones when I was sent a concatenated message it would display as one contigious message.
in Wm5/Wm6 a concatenated message is displayed as several messages and sometimes they come in out of order which is really annoying.
if anyone knows of a fix for this short of using an alternate messaging app please let me know.
My biggest issue is that I cannot connect to my office VPN using Internet sharing, worked perfectly in WM5 as a wireless modem, normal browsing is ok.
Malcolm
Most annoying thing...
(1) Boot time is incredibly slow, at last count 40 seconds from reset to ability to make a call
(2) I still cannot send text messages to 'groups' - major gripe from WM5 followed through
(3) Text Messaging - New has been replaced by Delete as the initial text message screen (possibly a setting I havent found yet)
Major speed advantage so far though...

That actually wasn't WM5 but an addition by T-Mobile.
You could use X-button to close programmes completely instead of making them run in the background. That way you don't even have to go into 'running programmes'.

Videochat software?

Ok, windows Live messenger mobile doesn't support it, neither skype... so the frontal cam of the trinity is useless?
Is it possible that the only way to make a video connection is a videocall? Doesn't really exist any software able to establish a videochat messenger like?
You can't say "it is useless except for video call" since this is exactly what it was designed for: 3G video call.
I understand that you prefer to use it for free, or cheaper through wifi connexion etc. and I wish I could do the same too.
Nevertheless, as far as I know, there is so far, only one sof which can allow you to make 'Instant messaging with video' on PPC, it is called Microsoft portrait. Something between Live Messenger and net-meeting...
There are two things which are not going to make you happy though.
1)
Video go through the rear camera, not the front one.
2)
Sounds as for other messengers, go through back speaker, not the ear-piece.
I had it installed a year ago on my wizard, but since I knew nobody using the same soft, I've never been able to test it out so far.
I'm ready to reinstall it on if you or anyone on this forum is willing to make some tests with me.
There is a version for PC, of course, so it is possible to test it on your PC too.
I heard it can work along with MSN, but both sides must have both softwares installed Live Messenger AND Microsoft Portrait.
You may ask: so what is the big deal about this software? the big deal is that this soft is optimised to use a very small amount of band-width, either 9600 kb (regular gsm connexion) wich gives a quite grey image, or broad band, wich gives you then full colors effect.

Actually, technically, it is already possible in a messenger application, from Tencent in China: QQ2007. And it uses the front camera.
The problem is that Tencent want to make a living out of this service, therefore, you have to be connected through the 3G service of a Chinese Telecom Operator, otherwise, it doesn't allow you to sign in...
Unlike previous version of QQ, when you are connected through wifi it doesn't work on the windows mobile version. There is a walk-around for nokia version, but nothing for windows mobile...
It's really a pity cause the technology is there, it's just a matter of that they don't want to provide it for free.
There are a freeware software for videochat: packetbone (an old release)
Another option is iFon from http://www.tabletmedia.com/ifon.html , seems the best solution for now
Best Regards Happy New Year!

In Marketplace: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/apps/c3f8e570-68b3-4d6a-bdbb-c0a3f4360a51
Not available in my Country (Mexico). Can someone upload the beta xap please? =)
Did you try the links above? Copy the ID of the app in the URL for your marketplace.
Installed mine via Zune. Just wish I actually used it. I've got about 3 contacts there. :|
I've been waiting for this for ages!
Pretty solid app. A bit laggy on my HD7, but still great to have.
Can't wait to actually start using this, but wish I had a front facing camera on my HD7.
Just downloaded, going to test drive it later...but yeah, no FFC on the HD7 is a bummer.

Installed this morning, a little laggy, cannot work in background (which is essential), no live tile, notifications add-ons are not getting through (smileys, links etc.)... Suppose these are beta illnesses...

nice first post dude !!!!!!!!!
but yes its beta 0.2 what can you expect
Beta, but sure long expected... Wouldn't hurt to have a bit more options in Settings... other then "sign automaticaly"..... Anyway, nice job and one thing that's been missing terribly!
Keyboard needs better integration. First letter or each message (sentence as well?) does not capitalize. Also, special characters (!, ?) do not revert back to qwerty after selected, as they would do in any other app.
Surprised it's standalone. Logs in 10x faster than IM+ so that alone is worth it. I have no skype credits to test out the calling.
Just tried skype to skype call from Titan and my ffc is completely black. tried messing around with settings but nothing....
My chatt boxes are all empty, I can see boxes and who wrote something, but that "something" isn't in there... video call works with back camera on my Trophy (no front camera unfortunately)...
merci beaucoup
Does not seem to work very well for me i am using a hd7, i know its not on the list of approved phones yet. For some reason no matter what i do it always has it on speaker phone.
On my htc 7 pro it works very very good. the call quality is very good. i used it over wifi. and call to an pc. the sound is better than it was pc-pc. i dont know how but it is better i tried the video call. and it works too. i have no FFC, but it uses the back camera which is 5mp and the picture is very good, not laggy, all the basic functions of skype are integrated, its a BETA release, so BE HAPPY with it! now i call for free from europe to canada, US, to the near east.
Doens't run in the background?
It seem the beta won't run in the background. That makes it a lousy call replacement app, as you'll need to coordinate with people when to open the app.
Also it lacks basic features like adding people to your contacts.

I'm curious, what other apps you ever got from the marketplace, runs in the background on Windows Phone?-)
With my Lumia 800 Skype work's perfect. On my LG Optimus 7 i can only use the external speaker. With my Omnia 7 the same problem.
Well app looks solid. I love it UI. Ofcorse i did test call from HTC TITAN to HTC HD7 & OMNIA 7. Works charm. HD7 and Omnia uses rear camera.
