SdSentry: fighting against storage card corruption - P3300, MDA Compact III General

Hello all,
I've written a watchdog that allows to catch a moment when the storage card is corrupted and softreset before the driver flushes FAT and root folder.
More details are here:
http://www.nixie.narod.ru/sdsentry/index-en.htm
I hope this will help you.
Any feedback is welcome.
I'm online with MSN [email protected] (also it is my email)

BTW, it doesn't matter what brand and size of the storage card is.
I have Kingston 1GB, and _it happens.

Thankyou for your work, Nikolay. It is apreciated.
I have had the software installed for a couple of days, and all is well.

Same here Nickolay, I have already posted a reply to your post at Spb Club forum.
I have your piece of code installed for few days and haven't seen the red icon, yet. Hope never will. Tnx .... as your code can save some nerves

I have tried your program but it keeps throwing up a corruption warning saying that there is an empty directory - Program Files on the storage card (which there is - I guess it is empty because I have no apps installed on the card)
Any suggestions?

Create a file in that folder...

Does anyone know the workaround with the WM5torage program?.....everytime i launch this app the SD-Sentry red icon appears saying that there is a corruption but when i check the storage card its fine.......thanks in advance

WM5torage disables the storage card for the orbit as long as it is active. During that time it is only accessible by the PC. Other programs like Tomtom do not work, because they can't find their data on the card. So does SDsentry.

Dear programmer,
your program seems to be a fine PlugIn for the XDA-Error with destroyed directorys oon the SD-Card.
Unfortunately your program is working in english devices only as it seems.
In german devices where the storage card is named "Speicherkarte" from the german WM5 your program will creating a new folder named "storage card" where it puts its check-files SdSentry.txt into each existing directory. No SdSentry.txt-file in any Dirs on the storage card.
In the dialogwindow of SdSentry the storage card is names "Speicherkarte".
The real storage card is not recogniced and protected in this way, as I assume.
Or did I something wrong?
Will you program a german version of SdSentry too?
I would be very glad about.

because of the described problem, I wrote a mail to the programer of SdSentry.
A solution was coming back immediately, how to install SdSentry im devices with other WM5-languages than english.
The program has a little bug to find the real storage card and creates instead a directory named "storage card" in the root of the device, that contains two directorys named "My Documents" and "Programme". In each of this three folders SdSentry creates a txt-file "SdSentry.txt" for verifiing the directury-structure for accessibility later.
For getting SdSentry working on german devices (analog other languages), copy following files:
\\storage card\SdSentry.txt to \\Speicherkarte(or however the name of your real storage card is)\SdSentry.txt
\\storage card\My Documents\SdSentry.txt to \\Speicherkarte\My Documents\SdSentry.txt
\\storage card\Programme\SdSentry.txt to \\Speicherkarte\Programme\SdSentry.txt
After copying the three files, you can delete the folder \\storage card with its subdirs "My Documents" and "Programme"
Since I've did this modifications, SdSentry seems to work well on my german-XDA Orbit.
Hoping it avoids more crashs of my SD-Card.
What a fun sitting in the car and loosing Navi, adresses and all tasks for today out of the HTC. May driving back to office and reinstalling the device.
I won't count how much time cause of this this worthless phone I had loosen last weeks.

TomTom6 keeps losing maps

Hi,
Every so often TomTom on my orbit loses sight of the maps I have on my storage card. I can't see any reason for this and have to recover from a phone backup . Once the internal memeory of the phone is recovered the maps are then visible.
Any ideas on what may be getting corrupt?
Cheers,
Neil
No answers but join the club and email HTC Tech Support.

HTC P3300 loosing TomTom Maps
Me too. Italian OS. Once I even had to reactivate the map, after the restore. Last time that I launched TomTom receiving a msg of the type "Cannot find maps..." I just made the PDA restart with a soft IPL. Will you believe? At the restart TomTom didn't complain for any map missing.
Maybe it's a matter of low available memory when TomTom cannot locate maps.
Hope this might help you. Let us see, if anyone else is posting his experience.
Thanks for your comments.
Once TomTom loses it's maps, a soft rest wont allow it to see them, I just keep on getting the message and the opportunity to download a free one from the website.
I did a bit of playing around last night and can confirm that a hard reset then allows TomTom (installed on the Storage Card) to see the maps (I don't need to reinstall, just run the exe file) so it looks to me as if its something getting corrupt in the standard internal memory of the phone and that this is causing the loss of maps.

This is an SD card corruption issue. Email HTC to lobby for a fix. See the relevant thead.
I don't see that it's storage card corruption. If you read my last post you would see that the SC was left alone when a hard reset was performed. The hard reset would only affect the internal memory and that cleared the issue.
I think something is getting corrupted in the internal memory and not letting TomTom find the path to its maps. Maybe something is messing up a registry entry?
believe me. I have had this problem over 10 times in the last month. When the tomtom maps go missing, the map folder is usually empty. This can normally be rectified by softg-reseting the device which uses the backup FAT for the SD card (so I've read in the relevant thread) and restores the missing files. However, if the device attempts to write to the card again, after corruption (which TT does on application exit) then the card will be permenantly corrupted.

During a reset (hard or soft) WM5 will do a version of scandisk on any storage devices connected (Micro SD) which will try to fix FAT errors. So a reset does effect the SD card and can repair it.
OK RicardoC & debully, thanks for your advice.
I have already emailed HTC tech support a while ago. You know, I still think Resco file explorer may be the common link to my SD card woes..... I'll have to wait and see.
Cheers
Bluetooth possibly
Hiya,
I had this problem and it seemed to be linked to the bluetooth explorer setting a new storage card (virtual), if you get this problem go into settings and turn off bluetooth explorer and check what storage options are available from the memory settings, the bluetooth storage should have disappeared. Once I'd done this tomtom could find the maps again.
Hope this helps.... and you don't actually have SD problems....

thank you!
i have tryed that and it seems to do the bussiness
This also happens if you have Bluetooth Explorer activated in your Bluetooth settings.
TT6 losing maps, you are not alone.
I know this doesn't excatly help, but I don't think that this is unique to the artemis.
I have the same problem with TT6 on my himalya (XDAii). It seems to be linked to either phone S/W or BT stack as I have had it happen to me several times after I have made or received a call. My workaround is to remove and reinsert the SD.
Has any one checked if other handheld PC users have similar probs (HP?) with TT6?
I have used TT6 with no problems on X51v.
Only had the problem on the Orbit when the Bluetooth Explorer was activated.
Hi,
I had the same problem on my Orbit, never experienced the SD corruption though. I eventually solved the Map problem by following the instructions, not sure where I got them from, perhaps somewhere on this site.
The instructions stated the following:
1) create an empty file on your PC and name it 'autorun.exe'
2) create a directory named '2577' at the same level as your maps.
3) copy the empty autorun.exe file to the 2577 directory
this did the trick for me
Removed the Bluetooth explorer from the Bluetooth installing settings from the Comm manager and hey presto, maps are back.
Rock and Roll.

Files are not installing to SD Card

Hello everyone, i have WM6 Radio Version 1.48.00.00 when i install something to SD card from my phone it installs it to main memory so i uninstall it and reinstall it pushing SD Card and still nothing i don't know if i,am doing something wrong.....please help me cause i only have 2.36MB left.
I am having an issue with my SD card as well, although different from the issue described in this thread.
The entire contents of my 8 gb Micro SD suddenly and without warning seemed to have disappeared. This occurred without warning and apparently, for no reason that I can ascertain. Settings -> Memory -> Storage Card shows 3% free space as before, however both File Explorer and Total Commander both show there to be only three folders: Program Files, Inbox, and WMDRM.
If anyone has any suggestions or fixes for this problem, I would be more than happy to hear their diagnosis.
Kind regards,
Lancealot

If you pull the card out and put it in a card reader attached to your PC/Laptop, are the contents still there? If so, then do a search for "Disappearing SD card" or something like that. Might be off in the Upgrading Forum, or the main Hermes Forum. I'd suggest doing a search on Hermes and all child forums.
There was something a while back where the contents of the SD card seemed to disappear, but they were, in actuality, still there, and I believe, showed up again after a shutdown/restart.
Maybe this is the bug that's showing its head on your device?!?!?
Hope this helps,

Hmmm, Zacch88, I really wasn't replying to your message. Sorry, I know you were the OP here, but I didn't have an answer for your question, per se, where I DID for Lancealot's.
But for your latest question, yes, there are registry settings you can use to save IE data and cookies to Storage Card. You can also do it with SK-Tools or HTCustom.
To make the reg settings yourself, follow this from the Wiki:
PocketIE Cache in storage card
Create these folders:
\Storage Card\Pocket IE\Temporary Internet Files
\Storage Card\Pocket IE\Cookies
\Storage Card\Pocket IE\HistoryAdd the following registry keys, string data type:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders]
"Cache"="\Storage Card\Pocket IE\Temporary Internet Files"
"Cookies"="\Storage Card\Pocket IE\Cookies"
"History"="\Storage Card\Pocket IE\History"
Good luck,

Thank you for the suggestion. I am still having issues with this 8gb Microsd card. I am trying to recover my files, but it still appears that the majority of them will not be recoverable to their original state. I've begun to run WM5torage on my Hermes and a program I found called Active File Recovery which should hopefully do as the name suggests..
I ran it for over 12 hours in 'Super scan' mode, however there appears to be files missing, and/or corrupt. I haven't overwritten anything so far but if anyone else could recommend any other advice, I would certainly appreciate it. Thank you and kind regards. Lancealot

for the Professionals htc p3300 users

Maybe someone can help me with the following problem:
I installed a 4 gb memory card using the patch and it works perfectly. The phone identifies it and I use it for music files and the tom-tom without any problems. However, when I wanted to install a new program I was asked where I want to install it (phone, memory card or Bluetooth). I chose the memory card, the program begins with the installation but then I get the following message: “your telephone has not enough memory. Delete old or unused items to create new memory”. It seems (although I chose for the memory card) that the program is trying to be installed on the phone memory. Does anybody have a solution for this problem? The HTC help service said its because the memory card is 4 gb which they don’t recommend.
Hi,
Many .cab files are setup to copy some files on internal memory even if you choose "Storage Card".
You can try to download WINCE Cab Manager to check your cab file and change location of destination files using this program.
WHat is the software you are trying to install? Is it actually a CAB file or desktop installer?
Does this happen for all software you try to install?
Please let us know.
thanks for your reply,
the program is called " the 5 minute veterinary consult feline and canine".
its from skyscape and its specially for wm users.
when i installed the tom tom on the memory card i didn't have any problems. i will try to install the WINCE Cab Manager.
thanks a lot for your advise. i will let you know if it worked.

TomTom 7: Unable to start. Not enough memory is available.

What the hell? Before I've changed the File system cache to auto it did work! But now that I have much more ram available about 21MB, it doesn't want to start. So I tried to go back to 4MB file system cache... but nothing, still that error message.

I've had this happen before, and if I remember correctly, it was a corrupt Map File. I restored an earlier copy of my maps to the SD Card, and all was good again.
Try hiding your maps and see if TomTom will run. It should ask you to use a Voucher. If it does, then it's the map problem and TomTom is fine.
Nope, I've tried this tip but no success... It's really odd...
Hi Zooster. Sorry to hear about the headache you currently have.
I have had similar problems in the past month, the first time really freaked me out.
In my case, I noticed that some of the files on my sd card know longer showed up, and later discovered that others had indeed become corrupted.
I solved it (and continue to do so when it happens) by formatting my sd card and copying back onto it a copy I have of all the Tomtom files. Infact, once you get it working again, I suggest you regularly make a copy of whatever is on your sd card in case it happens again. For me, it seems to be ROM specific, i.e. only happens when I flash some of the new ROMs. Sometimes the sd card suddenly stops showing up in file explorer, sometimes I just need to remove tomtom and then reinstall it.
The problem for you now may be getting the original Tomtom files, I guess it depends where you got them from.
When I flash some ROMS, this problem occurs. I have to avoid ROMs that do that and choose another.
I hope you manage to sort it out. I know what's it like when these things suddenly go wrong for no reason! Best of luck.
Mattster.
Ok, I'll try to restore original files... I'll let you know.
WHAT TOMTOM FILES DO YOU NEED ON YOUR SD CARD?
There seems to be an awful lot of tomtom files on my sd card, so I've started to delete some and see if Tomtom still works. And it does!
I've got it down to:
My Documents folder with maps inside
Voices folder
plus the following files:
ALBUM.VOL
AutoRun
Autorun.exe-run
Start
TTN
TTN2003
ttnavigator.bif
I've lost the 2257 file (that apparently causes automatic self install of Tomtom when you insert the card) so if anyone has that I'd like it back!!!
So, my question to all of you Tomtom users is: Which files are actually needed for Tomtom to work?
(I know there is the tidy up option of chucking any mystery files into a folder, but I like to know what all files on my sd card are actually doing!)
Mattster.
Hmmm...
Just had this problem myself, but might have fixed it on my Artemis
Originally I copied the TomTom Navigator.EXE to \windows\start menu\programs and it worked
However; it stopped working with the "not enough memory error" - so I started disabling applications, uninstalling them etc.
Still no joy
Just out of interest tried the TomTom Navigator.EXE within the TomTom folder on my SD card - and it worked...
I've deleted the .exe from "my device" and created a shortcut to my SD Card and now it looks like it is working again
Going to keep testing now - but perhaps worth a shot

For tomtom, TTN is the installation file, the others can be all deleted.
After installation, we only need the following 3 folders:
1. maps
2. voices
3. zip
All of them need stored in sd card root path.
If you need the satellite view, then you need one more folder in your sd card root, which is "raster"
The file "ttnavigator.bif" is auto generated by tomtom everytime you use it, you will always find it is still there even you have delete it sometime before, just leave it. Also "ttnavigator.bif" is a log file for tomtom, so it is useful, dont delete this file.

In the 2577 (not 2257) map are the following files:
AutoRun.exe
Autorun.exe-run
TTN.cab
TTN2003.cab
So you just moved them to the root

Sorry, can't answer that. Flashed my rom quite a few times but never bothered to clean up my storage card. Probably still got Tom Tom 6 and or WM5 stuff on there
i had the issue with artemis and tomtom Navigator v7.910.9185. It was on sd. Then i deleted voice and raster folder and suddenly the problem solved!
Then i copied voice folder back to sd with 3 voices (before i had about 25) and now it works like charm.
I have had this same 'memory' problem on a few devices,
it has always been sorted by an SD card format and a card restore from my PC.
as to Tomtom after a re-flash ... I have never had any issues with it at all,
I just restore a full backup with SPB backup.
i have tomtom 7 ver. 7.910 on my p3600 running wm6 pro but seems to always come up no gps device can anyone help, please send me a message soon thanks mossy
Go to Change Preferences, Configure GPS, Click Configure, Tap left Arrow to show Other NMEA GPS receiver and tap Select, Set 4800 Baud and tap Done, Select GPS in COM9, and you are good to go. Click Done to go back to main screen.
I had the same problem once, install chaps advance config an relocate the internet temporary internet files.
by default they are located in: \windows\profiles\guest
if you use youtube a lot and google maps i can happen too.
I get this all of the time.
the problem occurs when my battery gets lower than 70% and I launch TomTom Navigator 7.
what i do now is make a copy of the Map Folder and keep it on my memory card.
I also make a zip archive and keep that on my device (not SD Card) in My Docs or somewhere else with a copy of the corresponding .dct file and .bif files and installers.
this way, i can restore tomtom onto another sd card if need be.
usually i format the card and restore the zip archive!

hi, i have this problem to Mio spirit 678 when i try to stat tomtom 7910.
Can you help me.
ciao Diego.

Is there an app to check which apps were installed on the 'storage card' vs. 'device?

I periodically go into modes in which I need to clean clean clean my computers and gadgets and I was wondering if there was an app or something out there to detect which of my installed programs have been installed on the Storage Card and which have been installed on the Device.
I'd basically like to find what I truly need to install on the Device and reinstall everything else on the Storage Card to save Device disk space.
Thanks in advance for any tips.
Don't quote me on this, but I think DinarSoft MemMaid has something like this. I had it at one time on an old phone of mine. I seem to remember not only having this functionality, but being able to change to and from the other storage (from Main-> Card and Vice verse).
It may have been program specific, but It's definatly worth looking into.
if you goto the following link and go down to "Storage Memory" (maybe a little more then 1/2 down the page), it says that it does have the ability to see "What and Where" things are installed.
http://www.dinarsoft.com/memmaid/details.html
Hope it helps.
I could be wrong but if you open File Explorer and look in the Programs folder on "My device" you'll see all stuff installed on device memory and if you look on your storage card there is also a Programs folder with all the programs installed there. Perhaps I misunderstood your question and this isn't helpful - in that case, sorry!

Actually this was the original problem. Programs installed on the memory card will not only put files in the Program Files folders on the Storage Card, but can also install some in the Device Program Files folder, the Device Documents and Settings folder and even in the Windows folders.
Someone from PPCGeeks recommended using SKTools to figure this out and behold: not only a way to see where the install folder is, but you can move it to the card from the device and vice-versa if wanted!
