When I Upgrade To Wxml 0.2 I Saw Not The U Icon But The 3g
My Question Is This The Same?
If Not Why I Dont Have The U Any More It Was Very Fast Internet!
I Forgot When I Conect To The Internet I Dont Have The H
Icon For Very Fast 3.5 Generation I Have U Why?????
These are simply icon files, your physical connection HAS NOT CHANGED.
Firstly the U and 3G icons are the same really, you are still connected to a 3G(aka UMTS) network. Secondly, there is a cab installer to re-enable the HSDPA (H) icon. This can be found in the WMXL extras wiki page, or directly from here. Also if you have just upgraded to a clean copy of WMXL v0.2 then DEFINATLY install the ATI Imageon fix by sleuth, it is also i the extras page.
The HSDPA icon never shows on my device, however testing with fieldtest_157 shows i am not connected to a HSDPA network so my UMTS must just be awesome!??! (If anyone has an explanation for this then it would answer a question that is bothering me LOL!)
THANKS ALOOOOT MRVANKS!!!
You cannot stay connected to HS more than t sec ( t=10 to 30 sec)) if you are inactive for 10 sec the network will downswitch you to U (UMTS known as R99 with max speed 384kbps. HSDPA is known as R5). Only 10 users ( settable) can be on HS at the same time and if an 11 users try to connect , he will be blocked and assigned to U. Unfortunately the network will not upswitch you to HS automatically.
To stay on HS all the time you need to be active all the time ( streaming audio ?)

Very good explanation. I was not aware of the users limitation; thanks for clearing that up.
The 10 users limitation can be increased by adding more hardware but in the US it is curently 10 and might be increased to 20 or more few months form now when congestion hits any cellsite. HSUPA is coming in June when you can uplink up to 2Mb

Okay,
This is driving me nuts, i've been a lurker on this forum for months now, and i've searched all over this forum (for the last 3 hours) to find a fix for this but I havent found one.
I'm in Australia, and we've got UMTS here, it's working because it says "UMTS Telstra" in the dialer, but other then that I've still got the 3G icon displaying at the top and it NEVER changes, its so annoying!
I've tried XDA Live 0.10, 0.20 and now i'm using the 15-03-2007 LSVW release and nothing's changed...
I know i'm not the only one experiencing this, but has anybody found a solution for it?
Other than that everything else works great!

Yeah but with WM5 it showed U for UMTS, G for GPRS, E for Edge etc...
Infact it was rare that i ever saw the 3G icon at all..
Its installed on certain ROMs and some roms have "U" by default and the ext rom installs the "3G" over it. We refer to it as 3G over here (I think many that use 3G will sit there and scratch their head at the mention of UMTS) so it dont bother me.
If my memory serves me correctly, the HTC 1.35 ROM has the "U" and not "3G"
Also there is a thread on this with some cabs to try if you run a search.

I've searched all over this forum, and I haven't found it... I think i did come across it once before but when i tried to look for it now I couldn't find it... (very annoying)...
I know the I-Mate roms show it as a "U" because thats what I had on prior to WM6
Any idea what i should search for? I've tried "3G Icon" and "UMTS"
Also the UMTS is just a text string you can change in the registry. For me I've changed the UMTS to HSDPA to correspond with our network offering in Canada.
But when not in a 3G coverage area that text string is no longer there.

Yeah i know about that one, I discovered it in XDA-Live 0.10...
If anyone could please post either the cleaner 3G icon or the "U" icon and instructions on how to install them, i'd be very thankful
If you let the ext rom on LVSW install then it will install the cleaner icon

I was annoyed by this when I moved to WM6 too.
Doesn't this help?
ftp://xda:[email protected]/Hermes/WMXL_Support_Files/WMXL_Patch_Memory_&_HSDPA_Icon.CAB
"Recommended - Sets the memory cache to Auto and adds the HSDPA icon in registry file"
This cab work's good for me with wmxl 0.21
Wow, something this small annoys you? Why does it matter?
As several of us have said elsewhere, we get areas of standard signal, "3G" signal, and HSPDA signal. Without three icons, we can't distinguish between them.
Once again:
G = okay signal and speed.
U = good signal and 3G speed (upto 384 Kbps).
H = very good signal and speed upto (in my case) 1.8 Mbps.
When "U" and "H" signals both display as "3G", you can't tell if you've moved into an HSPDA area. In my case, I move across my office and it goes to "H" and I get better speed - so it's VERY useful when I want to browse or download stuff (or watch SlingPlayer).
Fair enough. I don't use any telco-supplied data so I wasn't sure. I always connect to local wireless.

I don't see what's wrong with the 3G icon...I think it looks more beautiful than the just the U icon. After all.....it's called 3G technology...which is a simpler name instead of the technical name.
My experiences:
LVSW first version gives a nice looking 3G icon when I've got UMTS coverage. When HSDPA is used, it show the 'H' icon (only when connected!).
However, the second LVSW version shows a 'stretched' 3G icon.
Is this also fixed by the cab file mentioned earlier?

I looked for a solution to the ugly 3g icon too, but i think i gave up pretty fast. so iv'e learned to live with it, somehow. but i still want the "U"
hi,
do a search for shogun_Uicon.cab,that should take care of U probem...
after that do a registry hack for H icon and u r set to go....
hope it works
Hey all,
I installed the LVSW ROM onto my iMate. I've had the same problem mentioned here before (not displaying as UMTS)...
I think the reason for it is quite simple, at least for the Telstra users.
NextG nextwork is counted as a normal 3G network.. not as a UMTS network. The original WM5 rom that was supplied might have had some sort of hack in place for us JasJam users...
Anyways, now I actually get a HSDPA logo on my phone, letting me know about speeds...
*shrugs*
The TEST WWE AKU 3.3 Full ROM that I was given to test displayed the connection as follows:
G GPRS
U 3G
H HSDPA
I never saw an E as we don't have Edge in our area.
I changed the U display to read 3G with a posted registry hack.
The G correctly displays GPRS network
The 3G correctly displays 3G or UMTS
The H correctly displays when a data package is sent or received.
Maybe this information can lead you in the right direction with the WM6 os.
Cheers
I've seen in my TyTN, WM6, radio 1.34 a (strange?) behaviour. I noticed with VODAFONE : I have a plain UMTS connection 3g icon and 3g data connection alive, used for push e-mail.
When I am in HSDPA area and data connection starts data transfer, I see a switch between 3G and H connection, then revert after 1-2 seconds ad the end of data transver back in UMTS mode.
Hypotesis:
1) Could be a simple WM6 LVSW edition bug
2) Could be a WM6 feature (HSDPA has well known problems in voice phone avaliability when active)
3) Could be a Vodafone Network feature, HSDPA onli when needed
4) 1.34 radio compatibility problem/feature?
5) ......
6) I am stupid and this is a well known fact
Question:
Any other wm6 user noticed same behaviour?
It has always worked like this, HSDPA is ON when you need it, not all the time.
thats part of the design, saving resources for the network.

This isn't working this way for all mobile phone providers in Italy, with TIM if you are in HSDPA area it will stay connected... and you're off-line if someone calls
May be we discovered why isn't enabled as DEFAULT setting and we need to enable using SetHSDPA.exe

Ditto in Australia. If im connected to GPRS, the icon is permanently showing HSDPA... unless of course i only have GSM coverage (very rare!!).
In Taipei, it works exactly as elivne says... H only when needed.
Cheers
FWIW, I didn't experience proper "throttling" in and out of HSDPA mode until I upgraded to WM6 and radio 1.38 (not sure which to thank for it). Prior to that whenever I was in H coverage, the radio would run almost exclusively in H mode. Talk about battery drain! Currently I can run for almost 2 days between charges (and that's with push mail).
How a particular combination performs for you must depend a lot on the carrier, your locale, etc. Took a lot of "trial and error" for me.
Yep, I'm on UK T-Mobile, and my icon only switches from "3G" to "H" when it's active.
As vp3G says, it noticably saves battery power from the old "permanent HSDPA" behaviour. Although I can't claim to get 2 days usage out of mine.
It is a network feature. If you are inactive on HSDPA for t sec the network will downswitch you to UMTS ( called R99 ). Only 10 users can use the HSDPA at the same time and there is an inactivity timer ( t=10 sec) try to manage the traffic by moving inactive users to R99 ( max speed 384 kbps)
Thank you for sharing your knowlege Austin Boy....

Cheers

Really only 10 simultaneous users? Seems like the odds of getting a timeslice when you need it would be virtually nil.
The 10 limitation can be increased by any operator by adding Channel elements (Radios) or more when adding another carrier ( frequency). Europe has more spectrum than the US and it is possible to get two carriers ( 2x5MHz) and use one for speech and the other for data. In the US we are sharing the spectrum between GSM and UMTS. AT&T will be migrating GSM to UMTS gradually and using the 850 band for UMTS before moving to LTE (4G)

I have a similar switching scenario.
Prior to flashing my Radio to 1.38.00.10 and ROM to Black 2.0 I tested my download speed at www.dslreports/mspeed and was please to see I got almost a 1Mb/sec rating.
However since the flashes I have re-tested and am now only getting 250-300 kb/sec. It may be the network, so I will try on a few separate occasions and different locations.
NB. I have enabled HSDPA in HTweaksC
I noticed during the test that the download bar jumps staright up immediately but then slows down quite a lot?

3 ITA is working same way.
Enabling HSDPA only when there is data transfer active.
Okay tried again on my commute home, and also when I got to my house.
Speed is looking good ! getting up above the 1mb/sec rate again.
Must have just been a busy cell/network
ok... i have a spv m3100 with black 3.0.1 wich is suposed to be HSDPA enabled... i have also enabled it in the tweaker.... today for the first time i have seen the icon H... in my area there is no HSDPA coverege... none... but i read today that untill the end of the year they are trying to cover it... and i was thinking that they are already making tests... i tested my speed at http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ and i had a 145 kilobits per second speed... wich as far as i know it is similar to 3g... i disabled the HSDPA and tried a few times in 3g... the speed was 135 kb/s... to small the difference...
so... my question... what is the tweaker doing?... enableing HSDPA or just replacing the 3g icon with the H icon?
no one???

on my works touch hd we use gprs.
depending on the strength of signal the phone will display in the top title bar
3G or H or G
if it displays 3G it won't connect to my works software via gprs.
i have to wait for it to display H or G
is there any setting or software i can use to make my phone disregard 3G ??

If you go to the manilla settings tab and disable 3G, does it still show 3G? I think it should default to GPRS if you do so (but I'm not 100% certain).

find Comm Manager then turn off 3G
using Manila 2.5 its found at
Settings / Wireless Controls / Comm manager turn off 3G
or
older WM6.1 Start/Settings/Personal/phone/band/
select your network type to GSM
to 2G or 3G thats the question
press the option to dial out
press MENU
choose OPTIONS
choose BAND tab
change top drop down box from AUTO to GSM
choose OK at top of screen
Phone will go from 3G if its in it to 2G and will stay stuck in 2G
You'll notice that your battery life will also last longer and if you were always swapping from 3G to 2G and back, you may have missed alot of calls too...
Happy 2G'ing - i am
many thanx for your replies guys...very useful..
to clarify...am using wm6.1 "proper rom"...nothing exciting i'm afraid.
so qeequeg...not sure what manilla settings are? but if you mean touch flow
then theres nothing to disable 3g (just sync data/sound/wallpaper/communications/customise tabs/about)
eye bees....nothing to turn off 3g in comm manager..(but again i'm using wm6.1)
but eye bees crystal_clear if i follow your instructions for wm6.1 and change band to gsm...phone tells me "if you chance bandset settings PDP context data call will be deactivated"....select it and indeed phone displays G in top bar ALL THE TIME
this works ok but with the software we that i'm logging onto via gprs its very slow.
ideally i want phone to display H all the time...
when i follow your instructions to change band to gsm theres another choice of WCDMA....would this be any better??
again thanx for input...feel nearly there but would like to tweak further for the illusive H

H = HSDPA its part of 3G and network dependant (sometime called 3.5G ?)
if 3G signal is not strong you will not always get the H
if 3G and H network not present then phone automatical selects G= GSM(GRPS) or E=EDGE
Phone/ Band settings
if you set to WCDMA would only connect to 3G/H network but if no 3G network coverage then no phone connection
Auto means Phone selects 3G or GSM which ever nework is received best
Hope that helps
eyebees...many thanx for your help and advice...appreciated

G=GSM
E=Edge
3G=well, 3G
H=HSDPA or HSUPA(High speed download/upload for 3G)
It does not use more data, rather it does increase max data speed(both upload and download)
Thanks

Hello all!
If you use internet sharing, you might be interested in this little application. The problem in using internet sharing, and actually internet through mobile data connection in general, is that the connection drops to WCDMA (3.0G) if there is no data in a certain time. When there is data request to any direction, the phone moves to HSPA (3.5G) network connection and starts the data up- /downlink. This results to 1-3 second ping time, the lag before a website starts loading.
What does my program do then? It sends small ping packages to 8.8.8.8, Google DNS, in certain intervals. This keeps the 3.5G connection activated all the time, and there is no 1-3 second lag in moving to 3.5G from 3G. The program should work with common service providers, but the fact may be that the network in Your country is faster in moving to 3G than here in Finland. In that case experiment with KeepAlive.bat, change the "sleep 7" to example "sleep 4", from 7 second interval to 4 second interval in ping packages.
The application is started by clicking "Run.vbs". The HSPA_Ping folder has to be placed to the root of the C (C:\HSPA_Ping\). If you make a shortcut of the "Run.vbs" to the "Startup" folder, the HSPA Keep Alive program starts automatically with your computer.
The ping package is so small, that it will consume data bandwidth only about 0.4 kbps.
sorry, mate, i'm a bit confused - is this package for PC ,when using ppc as modem, or for ppc? cause i've tried running it on my 6.1 stock sex1 and it doesnt seem to work (can't run run.vbs file ) , please clarify this for me .
p.s. installed as per instruction : unzipped to device's root folder ie c:/hspa_ping/ and shrtcut to startup folder.._
Yes it is for PC, and only to be used with Internet Sharing or any 3G modem
Sorry for the inconvenience. I might be able to make a similar program for our Xperia's, but that will take time. I am on a holiday right now.
I think this behavior depends on the network - I've noticed that when I'm on the 2degrees network, i always have HSDPA, but when I'm roaming on Vodafone’s network the connection drops to 3g when I'm not using data.
Sent from my leedroid Desire HD
It work on PC or PPC ?
If you just want the internet keep activity, you can find yourself IP like this *.*.*.* and run the cmd and tyep this on it :
ping *.*.*.* -l 1 -t
I don't know how to upload the screenshot on here~

Sorry to my poor English~~-_-!
Hey, so I'm confused. I activated 3G on my phone but it is not showing "3G" but it shows a "H" icon instead. My friend told me that "H" is slower than "3G". I'm not sure if it's the fault with the phone or there is some settings I'm missing.
I've set the phone on GSM/WCDMA auto.
Please help!
H is HSDPA
Dont panic, H stands for HSDPA, which is faster 3G setting for the network. In order of speed you will see
G - basic GPRS - slowest data speeds
E - EDGE - Enhanced GPRS - A bit faster than G but not going to set your world on fire
3G - Faster connection
H - Fastest connection
Which one of these you get depends on the cell you are connected to, the quality of the connection and how many people are on the cell (sort of, I am no expert).
In summary, dont panic! Your phone is fine, you have a great network connection, but I am afraid you have a friend who is wrong. Break it to him gently.

My Vodafone Wildfire S shows 'E' at home (whereas my O2 Nokia phone shows "G" or "H" depending on the weather)
