Hello all,
I recently purchased a Cingular 8525 and I'm really considering upgrading the phone's OS to WM6. I've successfully used the unlocker to unlock the SIM and made it SuperCID.
I did a search on this topic but really couldn't find anything that was in one spot....
I'm creating this poll for all those newbies (like myself who want to upgrade).
This poll is for any flavor of WM6....
Cheers to all...
Wow!!!!
It's pretty amazing that no one has bricked their phone while upgrading to WM6. As a newbie, I feel pretty confident upgrading this weekend...
I've printed up the guides and downloaded all the software...
I've decided to use the LVSW version.
Thank you to all for all your input and advice.
There are several threads with people bricking their phones (at least temporarily). Maybe after their experience they are too scared to come back here and answer the poll

That's exactly why I read the wikis and read the threads for 3 weeks before I even THOUGHT about upgrading. And even then I had to ask questions and sound like an idiot and sweat during the whole upgrade.
I originally went with LVSW and then with Black v1.2....I just couldn't resist.
Jim
I brick and can unbrick my tytn
Yes i try to upgrade my softbank with a dopod rom, for winmobil6 LVSW, and my phone brick after a 17% but reading all wiki, i can recover so is beautiful mobile 6, i'm happy with black edition 1.1 cyu
I know exactly what you're saying I've been reading the Wiki's and guides non stop in the evenings. My wife hates me at this point because I'm spending more time reading about the upgrade and asking questions than spending "Quality Time" with her
I guess, my fear is (like many of us newbies wanting to upgrade) bricking my $500 Cing 8525 and being out of warranty. I don't know about the rest of the gang here but 1/2 a grand is a lot of duckets
Quick question for you.... may I know why you decided to go from the LVSW flavor to the Black v1.2 flavor? Was the installation process the same?
Just curious....
Thanks

I can upgrade successfully without any major problem.
The only problem is while I am trying to restore the GPRS/MMS Setting, although I am using cab file for this network wizard but only can be done for 3G/GPRS but not for MMS...
Guys i want upgrade to WM6 but when i read the bricked section of ht WM6 upgrade i am holding back, i am unsing Dopod 838 Pro which is Hermes (HTC) and i have the following ROM upgrader (plpease look at the attached Photo). can some one please advice me if they have used this ROM for the upgrade of Hermes???
i will not want my oda to be a brick as its 3 cmonth old and still under warranty...
Hi truffle1234,
You may want to create a new thread asking your question. The intent of this thread is to find out the installation success rate for people who have already tried to upgrade to WM6.

Well...I guess after I successfully flashed LVSW without bricking my (almost) new 8525 I thought what the hell and flashed Black v1.2 on the spur of the moment...my wife says I have impulse control issues. But I'm glad I did. It seems to run smoother, quicker response and better handling of some of my 3rd part apps.
I've done ALOT of trial and error. I have hard reset my phone (of my own volition) 5 times over the past week. I'm a bit OCD and after trying out programs to see how I run it seemed like the memory went back up all the way. So I hard reset to start over again.
I finally have it working the way I like and the Black, from my low-level of experience, seems stable and more functional than the Palm I used t carry.
I have the following installed:
Weather to Go (working construction/realty I need accurate Wx)
BattMemory (I'm anal about checking program memory and its a small plug in)
O2Plus (great for hitting a button and seeing what apps are open)
Palm threated SMS (I hate the native SMS program on the 8525)
MORTGAGECalc (REALTOR, nuff said)
GoogleMaps (REALTOR, nuff said)
Batti (I like the top bar that shows charging status and level no matter what app I'm in
ClearTemp (cleans out settings and temp filed quickly)
VibraSwitch (allows me to switch between vib and sound a la Treo 650)
PTTFix (allows me to remap the PTT button)
I've tried some other apps that did not go so well...SPB, Mobile Shell worked well a few days then slowed everything down...I liked the tabs and the plug in but it kept slowing the system down...and a bunch of others.
I'm not a big media user so I don't need TCMP or any other cool multimedia gadgets so I kept it to what I need. I keep my laptop with me normally so I don't need to watch movies or do any of that stuff. Most of my business work is done on the laptop. I have avvenu (www.avvenu.com) on my desktop so I can pull any file from my desktop from my phone via IE, which is a nice feature.
I soft reset every morning when waking the system up and it runs alot smoother than my T650 did.
I've not missed a single call since getting the 8525, the Push email is alot better than 3rd party apps for Palm, the 3G rocks where I am, and I get better reception. On my T650 I would get 1-2 bars or no service sitting in my house but with the 8525 I get 2-3 3G bars as a rule.

Check out the Hermes Section and look for "Palm SMS" thread or something like that. It goes over the MMS settings quite in depth.
just follow the guide and it should be fine. I am a beginner to this too but do some research and reading and follow the GUIDE! the guide is excellent!
Well everybody, just wanted to give a brief update that I was able to upgrade my Cingular 8525 to WM6 No problems on this end. Would definitely recommend the update to all.
Which flavour did you upgrade to??
Black is back in
I had no problems with either Black 1.1 or 1.2. Upgrades went like a charm. Not waiting for Black 2.0
Used Mr Vanx's guide to upgrade my HERM200 to the LVSW edition (25/3 version). I encountered no problems at all.
Device seems to work fine, though in Surinam we don't have all the advanced mobile phone features as in europe (like gprs etc).
First time upgrade
Dear all,
I contacted HTC for my device upgrading and ROM updates, and they direct me to this forum.
I have a TyTN unlocked device, and want to upgrade to WM6. I explored all what you posted here but couldn't decide which version and link is suitable for me. Any way, here down my device information, and I'm appreciating any help to upgrade my device to WM6.
Device Information:
Device Name: HTC TyTN (Unlocked)
Language: English
Processor: SC32442A - 400MHz
Memory: 49.05 MB
System: Windows Mobile 5.0 OS 5.1.195 (Build 14955.2.3.0)
That are all information I could get from my device
Need Help my friends.
After all, I beleive that HTC should have an upgrade area to support their devices.
Thank you in advance.
Hi there!
its good to know that HTC assistants sent you here on this forum !!
I can suggest you to go for the wm6 image black 2.5 as its been always the most stable for me, so read the wiki and all the documents to upgrade your hermes to that version.
http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=37&Itemid=26
and don't run in the upgrade, take your time to read everything and if you don't understand something, come back here.

It depends on your personal reasons for upgrading. If you want to upgrade because of more speed and more stability you should try Black 2.5. If you are doing it because of adventuresomeness you should give all of the great roms here a try.
But at least you should try Black 2.5, Duttys V2 and Custels 1.3 to find out which one is the best for you. You should also try different radios to see if theres a difference in your area.
And don't forget the most important object: read mrvanx upgrade guides very very carefully and follow every step exactly.
be aware that the ROMs here are *unofficial* and *unsupported* ROMs.
HTC will NOT help you out if you screw up your device.
if you are unsure about flashing, then stay with the stock ROM.
I have a UK unlocked Tytn and would very strongly recommend Black 2.5.
My first ever ROM upgrade was Black 1.2 and it was soo god. 2.0 was even better and 2.5 better still. Have had no problems, battery life is much better, doesn't lockup/freeze any more, loads more memory available.....i could go on.
Go for it - follow mrvanx's upgrade guide. he makes it very easy
Flashig roms is one way... be careful...
When I first flashed a WM6 Rom on to my HERMES I made sure I read all the preinstall instructions very carefully as I didn't have a clue about flashing. MR VANX's guide is excellent, follow it carefully and you can't go wrong.
I have now successfully flashed numerous ROMS on to my device.
No-one can tell you which is the best ROM as they are all excellent for their own different features and customisations. You will need to try a few and see which you like best.
Good Luck.
I highly doubt
That an HTC representative sent someone here for ROM updates to WM 6.0.
If they did and are caught, they will probably be terminated.
I deal with HTC regularly and they don't condone or encourage our methods of tuning and research.
Be careful out there.
Thank you
Thank you a lot for your replies guys. They helped me a lot. I'll do the upgrade and will back to you with the results. Thanks again.

It always amazes me how corporate structures can be so schizoid. I too have received- from in-the-trenches personel- a pointer to this site specifically for beta testing WM6 Push. Conversely, the moderators here made it clear that management at HTC was a major impetus behind MS's request that the ftp archives be pulled.
The kicker for me is that the Wiki on HTC's US site specifically points to this XDA-developers and those postings are all vetted by someone at HTC USA. I'm thankful for that because that's how I found this site in the first place.
My Upgrading Status
First of all, I would like to add my voice to (teambnet) that I'm thankful for them to made me know this website and forum in the first place.
OK, about my upgrading status guys, I did exactely as shown in mrvanx.org website and did install WM6 Black 2.5, everything is gone fine except one thing, that the button of contact voice tag is not working. When I push that button, it gives me a message "Error opening the shortcut or locating the target filename.", I tried then to assign the shortcut to a program by going to Start --> Settings --> Buttons, but I couldn't find the program that should be assigned. I don't know if my problem are clear or not but I tried to explain as much I could. Any suggestions to solve that?
Thanks all,

I always suspected that secretly HTC were using us as beta testing guinea pigs, now it looks like I was right! And half of the fixes for their bugs are created by developers on this site.
Seriously though, if your Hermes is no longer covered by the original HTC warranty (as mine was from the very first day I got it, since I bought it from an "unauthorized" distributor), then HTC have nothing to lose by pointing someone to this site. They might as well have said, "Flush it down the toilet for all we care..."
John
HTC's wiki is just like ours, anyone can edit it... So i doubt that HTC themselves put a link to XDA on their wiki, but someone else probably did..
You need to install the voice commander CAB located on the first page of BLACK2.5 Then remap the button.
You should read thru the numerous posted before asked already resolved issues. Congrats on the UPGRADE!!!

Finally Finished
Hi all,
Thank you stuckes, I did as you told me and everything gone very nice. WM6 is a nice OS, not that much different from WM5 at least for me. But, it's nice. Thank you all for your help in that.
I got a question, when I would to upgrade, there are many versions of WM6, Black2.5 and other versions, where can I find a complete comparison with screenshots of them to decide if I'm gonna change to another one or stick to black 2.5?
Regards,

2. sheeeng: thanks for posting your result on the forum and offering an alternative download link for people who can't access rapidshare, appriciated it
3. aeropic: glad to hear your 2003 french rom flew to english, i will try to see if i can get a french version for you if you still wish and when i got time
4. bowmoreinfrontofafire: glad to hear your bricked ipaq came alive again, enjoy it
5. LuteK II: hope you have sorted out all the mess between tommy_adsl's rom and mine
for those who haven't share your experience with others, please do so if you have time
for those who just joined the forum and got my instructions, please stay here as long as you can, this is a great place
for those who got my instructions before yesterday that has a page link to ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-IPAQ-WM6-Upgrade-HX2410-HX2415-HX2490-HX2495-HX2495b_W0QQitemZ220218383266QQihZ012QQcategoryZ47103QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
i was shocked yesterday when i noticed that all the screenshots were updated from PDAViet's 18533 rom to, what a familiar look&feel!
i can't simply judge from that changes but, don't think i am a jerk, here were the actions i took:
1. i killed the download link
2. i posted my ebay item, sell it for 1.99
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250232653715
i am not going to make a fortune of that, actualy i pull out of my own pocket to cover all the fees in order to list it. i just hate thieves.
for those who still have problem upgrading your ipaq, email me and i will try to help out
for those who are unlucky and can't get the file before i shut it down, please view my ebay item, if you like, it costs you only 2 bulks.
for those who successfully upgraded, i appreciate it if you keep your copy for your personally use only
and again my thanks go to all and this is a great community!

Hi Guys,
Thanks to this forum and I have learnt lots of stuff. After taking knowledges from people on this site and a few days hard work, I think it's time for me to give something back to the community. This is my first contribution so I hope some of you will like my work.
Attached is the link to the WM6 ROM update I created for iPAQ HX2000 PDAs. I have my two hx2495b upgraded and everything works great: outlook, office, windows live, wireless, bluetooth, ... you name it, no power drain problem, no soft reset, fast, reliable, I really love my work.
I don't have any other hx2000 series model to try but I certainly confident that it will work with all models in the series. Here are some screen shots FYI.
Please don't flash your ROM using the file downloaded directly, you could brick your device and I am not responsible for that.
Please message me and I will send you detail instructions on how to install it. I will honor every single request. please allow at least 1 min, at most a day to get my response.
!!!WARNING!!! if you are a junior member and this is your first time flashing your rom, please let me know and I will give you instructions as more detailed as possible.
Also please do not waste other people's time by pm them and asking for the instructions. instead, you can use your time walking through this and other threats and topics. you really can learn lot of stuff here, you can transform yourself from an always "eating out" person to a DIY cooking chef like me.
So far we have quite a few people successfully flash their rom, the devices range from low end 2110 to high end 2790, the original rom versions include 2003 to 6. this is very encouraging.
There do have some hiccups though, here are my suggestions:
1. if you see a symptom where when you close a program and you see some "artifacts" on the Today screen, this most likely is because that when the rom was cooked, the registry settings for today's items were not cleaned up, so to quickly fix this just enable/disable some items or reorder them through today's setting
2. if you successfully flashed the rom but your device doesn't start, simply remove your CF card and reboot again.
hope you who successfully upgraded your rom will share some experience here.
Enjoy it!

After looking at it I don't think my guess is correct. It is a smaller than my Hermes 6.1 .nbf.
As soon as we hear from samz on how to install it I will give it a go on my 2410. I have WM6.0 on it now and I am getting some random battery drainage that hopefully this rom will take care of.
So we are waiting for Samz's instruction....
It appears that this is some sort of self extracting file. When trying to open with WinRar it ask for password...I say this is little fishy to me.
Flashing right now, will let you all know how it goes
Upgraded, flash went well. Including some screenies..
Good job samz, a very nice and flawless flash!
Feels nice and fast. I will play around with it for a few days and see if I find anything.
Might be time for me to pony up and buy a newer PDA though. It's a bummer that I only have ~12 megs of storage on the PDA but that has been about the same each upgrade since WM5.
Is the HP ProtectTools by Credant still available?

asbestos,
I'm thrilled that the 6.1 ROM is finally fixed & running!
Thanks to samz & all predecessors!
Am curious to know if the HP ProtectTools by Credant is still available in this ROM or as a separate installable cab file?
I need this application as a requirement for my work.
Also, it would be helpful to list what other 3rd party apps are included in this ROM.
Many users have been requesting for a 'lite' version of the ROM to maximize ROM space for persistent storage.
Thanks!

Hp protect is there and it works just fine. This is a pretty light ROM. It looks like samz replaced the usual calendar with 1-cacl lite, there is the normal wm5 explorer (which I replaced right off).
There is no java support. In fact all of the usual jre's do not work as far as I know on the wm5/wm6/wm6.1 other than IBM's J9 (cab included in this post).
Here is the base rom programs:
Games:
Bubble maker
Solitaire
Apps:
Activesync
1-calc lite
File Explorer
iTask
Notes
Pictures & Videos
Search
Task Manager
Tasks
Windows Media
I do not have a "B" revision device. If you do, you most likely have much more rom storage than I do. I started off with about 14 megs which has been pretty much the standard since the old school WM5 update years ago.
I did not need to shuffle ROM's around to do this update. It is probably the easiest upgrade I have ever done on this device other than the OEM releases.
If you want to update to it just follow the directions and PM samz for the directions.
Again, thanks samz for a great ROM. I will be testing it today with my usual routine and see how it goes!

Please pardon my ignorance. I have tried to work out what is going on here for the last couple of months, hoping that it would finally just click. could someone please explain to me what all these ROM's are. So I have an HTC touch diamond with the standard ROM (from the last update, i think 1.9xxxxxx cant remember). With all these 'ROM' developments what more do you get out of the phone. Do you guys still use the TouchFlo 3D? What is HARD-spl? Is it worth changing the ROM? There seems to be a lot of ROM's, how do i know which is the best 1 to use? I feel like i have so many more questions, but please could someone just outline what it is all about.
please excuse my ignorance. I have tried looking it up but i still dont understand so pardon me for taking shortcuts.
Thanks

i don't see how pointing him ti the wiki will answer any of his questions. that thing is as old as the diamond itself.
ROMs are the data image on your phone. the read only memory that includes sys, xip, wm6.1 and tf3d plus all the component packages in a ppc. all the ones floating around here are tweaked and updated by people to work the way they want them to, with suggestions by the testers.
they are all basically the same.
they are based on official htc releases and updated to the latest operating bits from other devices, then shared with us.
its up to you to find what works best on your device in your locale and for your specific needs. you don't have to read entire threads, just the last few pages or from the date that the latest one was released by that cook.
hard spl is a phone condom to keep people from bricking their phone. it is required and very important. i suggest developers edition so you can flash any rom you want.
and yes, flashing a cooked rom is very worth it, but i warn you, once you start you can't stop.
i can't tell you which is the best, i do know what are my favorites, but the journey you will take finding that perfect rom is very rewarding.

ROMs are the data image on your phone. the read only memory that includes sys, xip, wm6.1 and tf3d plus all the component packages in a ppc. all the ones floating around here are tweaked and updated by people to work the way they want them to, with suggestions by the testers.
they are all basically the same.
they are based on official htc releases and updated to the latest operating bits from other devices, then shared with us.
its up to you to find what works best on your device in your locale and for your specific needs. you don't have to read entire threads, just the last few pages or from the date that the latest one was released by that cook.
hard slp is a phone condom to keep people from bricking their phone. it is required and very important. i suggest developers edition so you can flash any rom you want.
and yes, flashing a cooked rom is very worth it, but i warn you, once you start you can't stop.
i can't tell you which is the best, i do know what are my favorites, but the journey you will take finding that perfect rom is very rewarding.

thank you very much
you have answered exactly what i wanted to know.
I'll give it a look into. Oh, and 1 other thing. If I have applications installed on my phone already, i presume after putting a 'cooked ROM' on it will remove all installed applications? Wouldnt bother me too much, just my TomTom navigation is a HUGE mission to get going. I suppose im on holiday and have time to fiddle.

Everything in the Device is erased when you flash a ROM. Stuff in the Internal Storage stays the same.
By da way you can also flash Radios.
Greets.
have a look here as this helped me alot

pretty much all apps for ppc can be found in .cab form. this is for easy installation and removal. if you choose a full rom you will get all stock htc apps, but a lite rom is bare bones. keep your collection of cabs on your internal storage for quick re-installation after flashing. also keep a backup of your cabs on your pc.
glad this helps
i didn't want anyone here to tell you RTFM or link you to search page. THAT REALLY GRINDS MY GEARS. ha lol

ya i can relate to that. Im also quite a forum junkie and I cant stand it when people direct me to search engines. Even on my local PS3 forum people always help out. Thanks to all for your help. Much appreciated.
So if I want to flash a ROM on my phone I just have to sift through the 1's here that are available. Do you guys recommend any? ie. one's that have few problems.
Typically the rom you get with the phone is a generic one, not too fast, full of feature and there to please everybody.
A cooked rom normally strips things down or tunes the device to a specific need. some roms remove as much as they can to give you more ram. Great for those of us who browse the web.
Others load them with more features so you never want for anything.
Others are generic but more upto date. The problem with official roms is they are updated and then go into testing for months and months then get released.
a custom rom will take updated drivers from other devices (like the HD) and place them into our roms with around a weeks testing or less. so we get them sooner. This does have its drawbacks.
A custom rom can be less stable than an official one. but you can get lucky. Duttys 3.6b is a good mix. Its faster than the stock rom, has more features but more memory as the rubbish is removed.
In the past 2 days I have learnt how to cook my own rom, which is the dream situation. I get rid of everything I dont want like Cyberon, transcriber, ringtones and other stuff. SO I have loads of storage free but also add in the software I use the most.
I now have the fastest rom I have ever used and its perfect beacause its tailor made by me, for me. Its really not that hard.

OK, I am new here and have done a lot of reading. Apparently me and about 3 other guys are the only ones that have USCC, not a lot out there for us. NFSFAN, you have mentioned that you might be able to whip us up something if there were more, that would be great. I do have a number of specific questions and I'd love all the great input that everyone has.
1. 6.5 or Android? (yes I know it is all personal taste)
2. My touch does not have GPS enabled from USCC. If I unlock the phone do I use .41 or 2.31? Yes I want GPS and would find a ROM with it and is that why I would choose one or the other?
3. My Radio is 3.42.30, do I need to upgrade to 3.42.50 for GPS or just to upgrade to 6.5? and where do I find that radio?
4. Am I asking to basic of questions yet?
5. How do I get Adobe Flash Player loaded/upgraded?
6. Is there a good .cab website out there for games/apps?
7. Can I have my cake and eat it too?
Nah j/k but I know my phone is capable of so much more than I am using it for now and want to take advantage of it. I really appreciate all the help and suggestions.
Thanks
HTC Touch Vogue 6900
3.01.573.4
3.42.30
Have you look over at PPC Geek's at all? There is a lot more CDMa info there.
Ok, I kinda thought this was the forum for CDMA, aka my USCC VOGUE phone. I have looked on ppc and am going to repost this question there. I saw the wealth of knowledge here and thought I could get some help....

This particular forum is for the CDMA Vogue but this site is geared more toward GSM devices. There doesn't seem to be a big US Cellular following on here.

i have my gps working. cokeman 2.31 unlocker and a omj.3.09.01custom rom. works great

Yes it is a personal choice, nice thing about Android is that it is a Linux shell - rebooting the phone brings you back to WinMO so really it can be best of both worlds just be prepared for some work in using Android and remembering steps before starting it like, Starting IE/Opera before starting Android to make sure you have Internet within Android (at least when I was using it a few months back)

You would use 2.31 unlocker and from there flash to a custom ROM - try a Generic ROM either 6.1 or WinMO6.5 might be able to utilize GPS if your connecting via generic or seek out some other USCC users in threads, I know some are using 6.5 currently and able to work fairly well

No, 3.42.30 is fine, you wont see a difference with 3.42.50 worth it plus it can cause some issues more than positives so stay to the basics

Depends on the ROM used as well as the Browser (IE or Opera) there is some reports of IE Mobile 8 or something like that working but flaky

Of course you can, but the actual saying is "can I eat my cake and have it too" in reference to the days of Marie Antoinette and the famous line of "let them eat cake" the idea is to be able to eat your cake AND have it, which of course would be impossible as would the situation a person in reference to the saying would be wanting as well
Hope that helps

Thanks Doug I had almost given up hope on this thread. I have been on PPC Geeks and am just about to take the plunge. Thanks for all the advice and I see the logic in the actual "eat / have it" order, very interesting and educational. Thanks again and I will try to update after I upgrade.
spittinfly, in your reading have you found the settings you need with QPST to make your GPS work with USCellular? Also, the instructions that get you into the diagnostic mode with other carriers do not work with USCellular. I had to do a lot of reading myself, and piece together information from several different threads to make it work. With the same radio you have I can lock in from 6 to 11 satellites. If you have found all this information I won't bother typing it all in, but if you need it let me know.
Personally, I've tried a couple of different ROMs, but I'm currently just running the USCellular WM6.1 with SPB Mobile Shell 2.1.5, while I'm anxiously awaiting Shell 3.
Well I am not familiar w/ SPB but I did go on ppcgeeks and searching for "uscc 6900" found what appears to be a good option for me. Would someone mind checking it out?

SPB is a set of applications for use ON your phone (SPB Backup, SPB Keyboard, ETC) SPB is the company name followed by what the app is
As far as the thread, Im hoping and assuming you are referring to NFSFAN 6.5 V6R2 Generic Carrier ROM ... I only ask as I am not going to read through 8 pages of replies to find what your referring to
If it is regarding NFSFAN and the ROM he has to offer, then yes I would suggest trying it, its the ROM I use on my HTC Vogue (Touch) and its been stable, fast and reliable

Is there a way to "turn on" the GPS (unlocker first, I understand this) WITHOUT changing the ROM?
I very much enjoy my current setup with ONE exception: no GPS.
I've read a little about QPST and have tried a version of it (its been quite a while) but it doesn't seem to recognize my 6900...
so... basically... 2 questions: 1. can I turn on GPS using only a settings change in QPST, and if so, 2. what version of QPST do I need to do so?
FYI, USCC 6900 6.1 Radio 3.42.30 ROM 3.01.573.4
Thanks in advance
