Remap T-Zones key under WM6 Beta - HTC Excalibur

Anyone know how to remap the pink T-zones hardkey to WMplayer or something else more useful?
Thanks in advance
Laotzu

same way you did it in wm5

The link file has changed. For WM5, the file was windows/short_AP1.lnk,
In WM6 Beta, the file is windows/short_IE.lnk
Open it up in your text editor and change it as you see fit.

Oh yeah, forgot that extra step. There's still a link_ap1. Fun things happen if you replace only that. IE will load, then the link_ap1 will load.

I'm still getting IE loading after I have changed Short_IE to the taskmanager. Very odd.

Correct, there is not short_ap1 in the Beta. I'm not seeing an option in the registry that hooks into iexplore.exe. I wonder if opening IE is hard coded into the ROM...
A short-term solution might be the following AEBPlus:
http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php
This would allow you to remap other buttons as well. You could make the T-Zones Button a double-press for task manager, for example. This is free for the basic version for smartphone but the nag screen stays active, however. Also, don't go remapping key buttons because one of the bugs is that the button sometimes loses it's initial functionality (e.g. Read don't remap a soft-key if you don't know what you are doing because you can't do much of anything without having the original functionality present.) Not everything works on the Dash with this app, but it still does the job.

Got it... I just checked my WM6 and figured out what I had to do to get it working.
First, replace the short_ie.lnk with the link of your choosing. Then, also replace pie.lnk with the link of your choosing. That will get it to run the proper application that you want to run. Don't worry, replacing pie.lnk won't screw with IE at all.

Good find, Merwin!
Just to clarify what Merwin said and to hopefully avoid further questions:
1. Make a shortcut of the application that you want to replace the t-zones button application (e.g. Pocket Explorer) using ActiveSync's Explore function
2. Drag the shortcut copy to the desktop
3. Make two copies of that shortcut.
4. Rename one copy: pie
5. Rename second copy: short_ie
6. Drag both copies back to the windows folder on the device and replace the original shortcut files
No device reset is necessary.

Remap T-zones
gadgetshrink, It seems that I cannot change the files you suggested, probably because they are hard coded in ROM, as it indicates in the properties dialog box in Total Commander when I click on the e.g. Short_IE file. I have installed the Surreal App Unlock, reset but see no way to change the file attributes. I have the standard t-Mobile ROM on my Dash. I have tried to delete the files and to edit them and to cut and paste from Word Pad. No luck. Seems that the files need to be opened to be able to change them.

you can try the attached .txt document, plus a few more tweaks you may be interested, as well.
Please read very carefully and be cautious not to mess up your ppc.

What you want is called SoftKey Applet, filename is: SoftKeyAppletEx.cpl
Or depending on what you want to do you can download Taskmanager v2.7. Kill poutlook.exe(windows folder) and replace it with whatever .exe you want controlled by that softkey. Just rename the exe you want to poutlook. If it still gives you a read-only error kill cprog.exe also and just repeat the above steps.

[question] any shortkey to kill a running app?

Hi:
Is there a shortkey to kill a running app? not just minimize it.
Thanks.
nope.. just use a task manager..
I did remap a key (my T-Zones) so that it would open the task manager, then I could close apps from there or just switch apps.

Look for short_IE.lnk in your windows folder and add the path to the program inside quotation marks.
Example:
32#"\Program Files\Program Folder\program.exe"

I'm not seeing the short_IE.lnk file in the windows folder. I see all the other .lnk, just not the one mentioned.
Turns out it seems to be a new problem with the new HTC rom. Hopefully this will be resolved soon.
I thought you were on the T-Mobile ROM when u said T-Zones key. Im not sure which key the T-Zones key is on an HTC branded device. If you can find that out maybe that'll help you seek out that .lnk file.
i'm running the new htc rom and i had a short_IE.lnk file.
at any rate, find the jogger settings program if you're still having trouble. part of that program is that you can reassign your tzones key.

I've done some extensive searches and can't locate this "jogger settings program" do you have the cab file? Do you know the exact name of the program?
Thank you.

I just added Task Manager to a speed dial.
Works for me
If you guys are looking for the t-zones key after the HTC ROM change it is
Windows\iexplore.exe
for some reason though i had to use total commander and then assing the key on the smart toolkit that im using.
when i had the t-mobile rom i was just able to change it with total commander.
i am using the t-zones key for the Tornado low light program.

Changing IE key to open internet explorer rather than CeleTask

hi,
can someone please link me to the file/clear and simple instructions on how to do this?
i upgraded to the 6.1 rom months ago, and managed to change the IE key to launch IE. Since then, I had to reset my phone and can't remember how I did it
I tried searching, but i can't find it! I've tried searching "remap IE key" "Change internet explorer key from celetask", etc.
THANKS
I have the same issue. I'd like to switch the messages icon to the celetask, and the ie icon to ie.

i know it can be done! i don't remember if i downloaded a txt file off xda or if someone had instructions....
hopefully we'll get an answer soon!
Use total commander and browse to your windows folder and scroll down to Short_IE.Ink click file then edit and enter (19#"\windows\iexplore.exe") just as you see it here without the parenthesis then click file then click save and your good to go. hope this helps
If you dont have total commander I just figured out how you can do it with Resco Explorer - browse to windows folder, scroll down to Short_IE.Ink click Action scroll to open then to open with and scroll down to notepad click done it will open in notepad edit per above post save it and your good to go or you can bypass Resco Explorer all together and just use notepad and browse to file and edit. one of these should get you what you want.
Awesome! Thanks!
Sorry guys, first post, and really, really dumb but where is the " \ " key on the dash keyboard?? I am just blind?
nevermind, i figured out what i was doing. Self-proclaimed idiot right here folks.

Customize V3 TF3D menus (Size & Skinnable)

With honor to the_ape for finding the registry key HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCMenus
This allows you to modify the menu size and skin the images of the HTCMenus, as found on the new V3 TF3D, like the one in all the latest ROM's with Topaz stuff in it. See the screen prints if you are unsure what I am talking about. You need these newer menus already installed, if you not not have them yet, these settings will not install them for you.
Remark 1: Oddly though it changes the menu size for all programs, except TF3D itself....[elim]
Remark 2: Problems with menu's drawn from the top (slow with floodfill error) are solved. So it should now work with Resco, wktask, SC3. The error may still appear if you are in landscape, the menu is drawn from top and has 6 or less items. To solve that too, also restore the included bitmap to the windows directory.
The bitmaps are hardly changed (I colored 6 very critically placed pixels), but I did re-encode as monocrome & 8-bit, so the first load of the first menu should be marginally faster.
For full skinning, read post 24. But if you just want to make the menus smaller, the attached registry file will allow to fit 11 in stead of 8 menu items on a screen by reducing the tile hight from 72 to 60. To restore to the original, import the HTCMenuNormal file.
The total allowable 'Navi' + 'Item' heigth is 696 in portrait and 376 in Landscape.
Original portrait values are 72+46 which at 8 items means (46+8*72+46)=668
Original landscape values are 72+46 which at 3 items means (46+3*72+46)=308
Not only too large, but non-optimal use of space, especially in Landscape.
I use portrait values 60+18 which at 11 items is (18+11*60+18)=696 Exact!
and landscape values 57+17 which at 6 items is (17+6*57+17)=376 Exact!
So I believe these values are ideal in efficiency, large enough to select and drag, but quite a bit more menu selections (double in landscape!!). The 'Navi' is too small for the finger, but you are supposed to drag the entire menu. And they do still visualise the fact there are more menu options. Below zip file holds now these values.
Or do it manually:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\HTCMenus]
"ItemHL"="0,[B]79[/B],0,[B]6[/B]"
"ItemHW"="440,[B]60[/B],640,[B]57[/B]"
"ItemTile"="10,[B]60[/B],[B]152[/B],0,11,22,33,44,55,66,77,88,99,110,121,132,143,154,165"
"NaviHW"="440,[B]17[/B],640,[B]17[/B]"
"NaviTile"="10,[B]17[/B],[B]162[/B],200,211,222,233,244,255,266,277,288,299,310,321,332,343"
"NaviIcon"="20,[B]17[/B],[B]162[/B],354,375,396,417"
I was hoping also to find a registry setting to speed up the animation (sliding, appearing from bottom) but that I did not find yet.
Below files are registry files. You can import them using your favorite registry editor. Don't forget to also copy the bitmaps to the windows directory, To uninstall/reset, import the 'Normal' registry file, which is the values as I first found them on my Dutty's 1.8 EXTREME. The bitmaps you can leave (it does not matter) or delete (the old ROM version will re-appear)
NOTICE: Even newer TF3D (Dutty 2.2, but possibly also other recent ROMS) have slightly different settings. Co0kieMonster worked it all out nicely here, so best not use the outdated files in this thread anymore, unless if you have a really old version of Manilla.
This is a cool idea, as those menus took up the whole screen sometimes. Got any screen-shotties?
Good tips. Thank you very much.
Helps if you could give some instruction on how to use the files.
I tried changing the reg vaules (all the "item" values). It does change it smaller, but causes havoc in my Resco File explorer. When pressing the favourite button, the device freezes with no drop down menu displayed at all. I then press the menu at the bottom right, and the entire screen went hair wired for a while.

There just registry files. Just import them. 'Normal' to go back to original, 'Small' to use my 10-menuline settings.
If you have .fred task manager (fdcTaskMgr) you may first have to associate .reg files so you can import. On Dutty's 1.8, this is already done. I think your resco also has a registry editor and can also import.
Or you just manually read the registry files and edit using your Resco registry editor

Odd. Are the menus OK in other programs? You should soft-reset between changes. Can you revert to 'normal' by importing that file and is the problem gone again?
There is a problem with the selection (see screenshot #1). I test a little bit and when I let ItemHL on the values "0,73,0,0" it works better (see #2).
I attach the changed registry file.
Update: The problem is now that this doesn't work in manila?! All other menus are smaller but in manila the entries are normal (#3).

I had that once too, but it went away with the next reset. So I still have the ItemHL set to 58, but the select bar looks OK. So though I do not understand ItemHL, I think it may not be the cause of what you saw.
Edit: You are correct, the ItemHL needs to stay at 73, that value probably is not related to the 72 of ItemHW

The problem of hair wired display is observed in Resco file explorer when you click on the favourite (Star) icon at the top right side. The device is momentarily frozen but return back with a blinking blackist menu.
If I import in the normal registry item, this problem is gone.
Okay - I LIKE the HTC menus on touchflo apps and would like to have this style menu in ALL programs (much like in Duttys rom) such as mail, calendar etc.. How can I make this happen?
But, it works only in Manila or also in all others programs (like Resco Explorer, ecc...)?
Thanks.

It only works in other Applications. In Manila it doesn't change anything (for me). But that's okay because only in other applications the menus are to big.

Well, I'll see if I can get a copy of Resco and try if I can confirm. But if it is like you say, I am not sure if there is anything we can do about it. There is no programming or anything, just the menu size. If Resco is allergic to that, we may simply have to accept that.

This *does not install* any large menu program. You must already have the large menus installed, they come with the new TF3D. And you probably do not have that, otherwise you would not have asked. If you do not have them yet, these settings will not do anything for you.
But yes, once you have HTC Menus installed, they work in *all* programs that use the template Windows Mobile menu system. (I suspect HTC replaces the template menu driver or something)
PS: do not mistake "HTC Menu" with "LargeStartMenu", also by HTC. The latter has been around for a while, even as cab, but the menu replacement is rather new, and not extracted (yet)
Cheers for taking it further, I'd had a play with the size values (not long enough), and not got what I wanted.
You have to remember the defaults are probably set for the pro2 with a smaller physical screen, hence the big'nes on the HD.
Font's are dependent on the font family you use I've found.
Looks like the small font mess up wktask too, rending it impossible to terminate/close task, or go to the action menu. Restoring it to normal font cures the problem.
Great!

I do not think anyone extracted it into a cab yet.
And I never done anything like that. It probably means finding out all the interdependencies between files, extracting said files, extracting the service settings, and building a cab. Interesting, I am willing to try when I have the time, but don't hold your breath, it may take a while.....
Really it is a very big work!
Fortunately I am a patient person...

Remap "Launch Browser" on Manila tab?

I have been searching and searching to no avail.
There has got to be some way to remap the "Launch Browser" button on the Manila "Browser" tab to launch the browser program of your choice?
I know I can select Skyfire as my default browser and it will launch with other programs... but I would like that same browser to launch when I push the big button on the Manila tab.
Seriously... there has got to be a way... anyone?
I found where someone else posted this in the HTC Diamond forums in responce to this same question about a year ago. I haven’t had the opportunity to try to confirm this as a work around:
All you need to do is to modify a file named “InternetPortal-en-US.xml” which is located in \Application Data\Manila. Use the freeware application Total Commander to navigate to this file and once you locate it press the pen/paper icon on the bottom of the page and that will open the file on the screen so you can edit it.
Once the file is open in Total Commander just add one of the following lines after the line <InternetPortal> which is towards the top:
Opera is:
<BrowserExe>\Windows\OperaL.exe</BrowserExe>\mobile\OperaL.exe</BrowserExe>
Internet Explorer is:
<BrowserExe>\Windows\iexplore.exe</BrowserExe>
SkyFire is:
<BrowserExe>\Program Files\Skyfireskyfire.exe</BrowserExe>
Iris is:
<BrowserExe>\program files\iris browser\irisbrowser.exe</BrowserExe>
I installed Opera Mobile 9.5 beta to my storage card, so my new path is:
<BrowserExe>\storage card\program files\opera
*Note if you can't save your changes - make sure that the file isn't set on "read only" (click the hand holding the paper icon and uncheck the "read only" box. You may have to click twice to remove the setting)
As I would be looking at going to Skyfire, I’m guessing my path would look something like this: <BrowserExe>\Storage Card\Program Files\Skyfireskyfire.exe</BrowserExe>
Again, I haven’t tested this yet (I'm at work), but looking at the information posted in the .xml, it does appear to control/direct what happens when that Launch Browser button is pushed. Whether or not other files also have an effect, and what these changes would effect, are yet unconfirmed (as I saw no replies after that post).
There are however other commands in that .xml file that I'm not sure how they effect things and I would love a second opinion.
you can go into the registry and navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\EFBROWSER and change the path in line number 1 to lead to whatever browser that you want to use and then change the name in line number 0...hope this helps!!

I know how to change the "default browser" that other programs (mail, Twitter etc) launch via hyperlink. That's easy.
Setting another browser as the default browser however DOES NOT CHANGE Opera from launching from the "Launch Browser" button on the Browser tab in Manila. I want this button and tab to launch a different browser as well.
Still haven't sat down and tried the method I posted above... but I'll report back if I can get it to work.
I've found this in a few places too... unfortunatly... nither the directory nor the file exist in this version. I even had it searching hidden & system files to no avail. Am looking for alternatives.
Check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548770
Also, here is item 4 from that thread. It appears you can have what ever browser you want to launch from the "Globe". But it does not effect the bookmarks you have set in the Manilla browser tab. I need it to launch these as well in my selected browser. BTW I have done the tweaks here, and can confirm they do work. I have 6 of my own bookmarks on the browser tab. And I got rid of the globe, didn't need it.
But I am still using Opera 9.5. I really want to be able to make this work with the book marks cause once Fenec is released I will be using that instead.
4) Remove the line <BrowserExe>\Windows\iexplore.exe</BrowserExe>
This will now launch the lower left Bookmarks and lower right browser in Opera. (this is only possible, if you have already edit the registry in the previous tutorial)
Replacing the tag <BrowserExe>\Window\iexplore.exe</BrowserExe> with <BrowserExe>\Windows\Opera9.exe</BrowserExe> only launches the "Earth" tab in Opera but the tabs will not be launched at all, not even in IE. Don't know why this happens. You can even edit the Banner tag so that it doesn't go to the web2go website by modifying the NavigateUrl to "" or whatever you want

Unfortunately, as I had said in my other post, neither the file referenced nor the path are on my device. It has got to be buried elsewhere. I just need to know where.

Are you referring to the "IternetPortal-en-US.xml” file?
I'm looking at it right now on my Verizon CDMA TP2.
As for the other tweak... glad to hear Im on the right track. Cant wait till Im home and can do some file editing on the laptop. I don't use the bookmarks on the Launch Browser page very often, so I feel that I'm very close to having a solution for this issue. Now I just need to arrange the free time to give it a shot.
