I'm not at all technical, and therfore nervous about completely changing the ROM on my HD. I'm also paranoid about touching the registery, because I don't know what I'm doing.
There are 2 things i'd like to do:
1) modify the tabs at the bottom of the screen to get rid of all the garbage that my carrier put there, and customise it to what i want.
2) have the ability to change the functionality of the soft keys below the screen
Is there a utility or program that does either or both of these things.
Many thanks
Lost too!
Hi
im new here too! still wondering n lost about the terms and acronyms used here.
Whats TF3D? wats Manila? how do i normalise back a certain add-ons which i dun like? do i need a certain additional program to install certain add-ons? gosh, im so lost!
juz bought the phone but nothing has been done yet..
any BASIC/MUST-HAVE applications or add-ons as a start as a base?
Many thanks!
You can always flash a new ROM (thats the core.. the OS and basic apps.. and on your phone all that stuff you operator added) theres a wiki how to do it. Flashing a rom is similar to flashing the bios on your PC. Most things are editable. You can get "Cooked" ROMs those are Cores that people have modified, added to, customized and tweaked.
manila is the the tab interface you see on touch phones there's Manila 2d and newer TF3D - (TouchFlo 3d)
There's tons of freeware and opensource available and what is "must" have is largely opinion and what you do with your phone. it's good to browse here for apps and in Blackstone/ROMs for ROMs.
things to be aware of your phone is WVGA.. big screen not all apps will fill it if they are qvga or vga. also you have almost no buttons so everything is touch... this can be a problem with some apps as they expect/require buttons. But newer apps are improving to support purely touch base control.
hope this helps you can always msg me if u have questions.

Most addons come as .cab files you copy them to your phone and execute then.. run them and theyll install.. theyll ask phone memory or card storage. i put most things on the card and only install key things for the phone to run in its memory. to uninstall any cab or some programs that are exe and you run from desktop they install to phone. you can uninstall them either from activesync remove programs, or from your phone settings/system/ remove program and they uninstall.

Please don't try to change the ROM now, I would recommend you play first with the HD and learn it.
Answers:
1. There are many options - one is:
Stevedpl7 TF3D Tab Icon Theme 5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...ight=stevedpl7
2. You can program the soft keys in many of the config tools - one is:
JS Advanced Configuration Tool 3.3 http://www.touchxperience.com/en/adv...tion-tool.html
Finally, while the application list is always personal, I suggest reviewing mine at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3117017&highlight=secondtoday#post3117017
Good luck !
Thank you sooo much guys - that's about the level of tech-ness I can cope with right now. I think I'll shy away from loading a new ROM for a while, as suggested. I just sounds like it'd too risky for a dunce like me, and the consequences appear to be potentially quite dire.
I have found and installed HDTweaks, and that allowed me to configure the softkeys. Now all I have to do is find a way to change / reallocate / rearrange the tabs.
Thanks again for your "sympathy" and help.
Cheers.

I've cooked a Rom for the Asus Zest Build 28232.
Download link below
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AHK4D9NF
Mirror: http://ul.to/xvu21b
It seems to be faster than previous builds. ~44 MB RAM free on first boot.
MS online services/widgets removed.
Give the interface some time to load at startup, before pressing Start or other buttons, or you might get a Shell32 crash (nothing major, anyways).
In Program Files you will find two empty folders: "Finger keyboard" and SIP change" (these were part of the Blade0rz kitchen on which I cooked and forgot to remove); just delete if not needed.
Blade0rz kitchen reupped at

Thanks

It's work fine, mate... Good job.
Just remove google and asus soft for next rel.
Best regards.
Thanks, Zen 67.

"Google maps" - in ASUS_ROM.
This is very fast build. I think it's twice fast than 28205. After some reg tweaks I got near 50MB free RAM at start.
I didn't explore reg tweaks possibilities... Anyways, i'm really new to all this cooking staff. Can you share the tweaks you mentioned?
Also kindly specify Asus soft to be removed... I would'n want to remove something I shouldn't.
Cheers
Basically, it's not "tweaks".
I am an old-fashioned user, and I don't use Titanium. So I don't need many plug-ins.
First, I remove every unnecessary registry keys for plug-ins.
Second, I remove content of regkeys for "ErorReporting", and every similar unnecessary (for me) service (BtHID, Vindows Live, IPv6 and so on).
About Asus software.
I am not sure, but maybe AsusZip and Network Settings (which is WM6.1 - maybe). I first thought of Asus dialer, but it is a dialer wit VideoCall capability, so we need it.
I think you don't need to remove any regkeys, coz the "tweaks" are for my customization only.
In general it is a good idea to build a "basic and full" release... but it's a time-consuming job.
P.S. After removing unnecessary services&plug-ins, the stand-by time increases about 2 times...
Thanks for the ROM genci! It works flawlessly and my MMS works again! I installed a couple of the O2 specific cabs to get the network settings, USSD and emergency call settings set up. If any body else wants these cabs you can find them in the Zest Upgrade Pack on the Blade0rz ROM thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=551379
Does this ROM have User Configuration (UC) built in? I know the original one from the kitchen you are using did (it was one way to load the Zest Upgrade Pack automatically). Any idea?
Thanks, agitate! I'm glad to hear you liked and you are using my rom.
I've never used UC; you are right, I used Blade0rz kitchen that should have UC.
I just ported the system, without touching anything further (OEM). In fact i would like to explore more on removing Asus soft from the OEM misc folder, without damaging functionality of the ROM, just to free some more RAM, mainly for using it with some more fancy UI, like the memory hungry SPB Mobile Shell.
Can you advise on the above?
I'm planning to cook a 23544 ROM (issued the last couple of days). Do you have any info on which is better, 23xxx vs 28xxx.
Thanks
Genci
Cheers everyone!
It would be very useful to me if you provide some feedback on the rom.
Cheers

Unless the ASUS software is running in the background then you aren't going to free any RAM by removing it. Only ROM for installing other programs in. Right?

I used to follow Da_G's release thread, but, as you probably know, if you stop reading it for more than 10 seconds, you find yourself 6 billion posts out of date. I remember being very excited when the COM8 branch started, but it would seem that the COM5 (235xx) branch is the most active at the moment. Sorry I can't be of more help.
I've been using your ROM for nearly a week now without any problems whatsoever. One weird thing I noticed is that there are a load of cabs in \asus_rom that haven't been installed as part of the initial ROM setup. Google maps is in there and also the Network Settings cabs (which I installed the O2 version of separately after noticing that they were missing). Is there something missing from your ROM setup that has stopped this first boot install from working. Or did it just not run on my device? I started the install and then got distracted and when I came back it was sat on the Screen Setup page waiting for my input, so maybe I missed something. Any ideas?
Thanks again for all your hard work! It's appreciated.
They were part of the UC, which I removed, but without removing those files.
So don't worry, you didn't miss anything... I did.
I'll try to address in other releases, if necessary..
Cheers
Genci

does anybody can explain differences between different builds?
why do you choose 28232 and not another one?
I already used this rom for two weeks til now, it run well to me, no problem except the error after finish instal rom that already mention in this forum.
My big concern is about total program memory dan free program memory (not storage memory), is there a way to make it bigger? because Asus P565 has default total program memory = 128MB, but in setting it show only ~89MB in total, where is the rest? Or anybody now what to do to free more memory?
Also, lag of scroll feature when read document in word mobile, and hard to select bunch of text when read incoming email (with keyboard already open). But I found both of this lag also in Rishi's rom, I don't know is this common or not, since I only try Genci's rom and Rishi's rom.
For now I used 'AE Button Plus' to remap volume key to page up and page down function for read document (long press to change sound volume), and used 'Cootek Touchpal keyboard' for select text in email (it has feature to select text with visual arrow).
Waiting your promised rom, Genci, thank for sharing.
is this taken off?
hope you could put it back on or an updated rom.
my device is hanging on me 4 times a day and im in need of a new rom
I use Rishi ROM, it isn't 100% stable but stable enough for everyday use
thanks but could somebody put this back up?
http://rapidshare.com/files/390487023/GM5_28232.rar.html
still not available
I can put it on server but which one? i don't have rapidshare account
I haven't figured out how to do anything except insert the battery and sim but WOW .. My totally honest first impression is maybe I like it as well or better than my iphone .. That is saying A LOT !!!
If you like it already, just wait until you figure out how to turn it on!
And of course when you start flashing ROMS and so forth...
It is better than the iPhone yes, but it is an entirely different beast. Don't expect it to run perfectly stock. If you spend a little time hacking it you can get it to run almost exactly how you'd like it to.
And really, isn't hacking half the fun of owning a WinMo phone? I think so. Even after I have my phone set up perfectly on one ROM, the urge to reflash is so strong that I can only hold out for a month, maybe two at most, until I start all over again. Yay.
congrats! Once you start figuring your way around the phone be sure to visit this thread full of great apps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550973
If you have any questions you know who to call ghostbusters!
enjoy your new phone
That thread that burton gave you is definitely the best place to start, to learn about all sorts of things you can do with and to your new fav gadget.
Installing apps and tweaks to your phone is usually a simple matter of obtaining a .cab file for whatever you want to install, copy the .cab to your phone (to a file on the SD card is best, so you can leave them there for future re-use), and clicking on the .cab to run it. Once you're comfortable doing that, I would highly recommend running the two cabs I've attached here, they're a good idea for any new TP2 owner; they improve the native memory management in the phone, and free up memory much better once apps are done using it, and they'll go a long way towards making your whole experience better (without them, your memory use will keep creeping up on you until you reset).

You are so right. I have the HTC Shift pretty much since it came to the USA .. I bought one - unleashed FULL WinMo .. sold it .. then missed it and bought another. I have Full WinMo and Phone on it .. I think all I need is blue-tooth on the WinMo side and for WinMo to recognize a memory card. Pretty sure neither of those hacks have been worked out. I can wait!!
PS .. thanks for the link and the files as well .. First thing I am going to do is sync my contacts .. then PLAY ..
Well the Shift is an even more different beast. That thing really is a mini-computer. Not sure how great of a phone it would make.
Anyone know if HTC is planning on coming out with a successor to the Shift?
The shift is for sure a computer. I have Win7 on it and WinMo 6 I think .. There is no bluetooth on the phone side so voice comes out of the speaker. If you held it up to your head it would look ridiculous.
Still ... it is nice to have a phone in it, only because you can
Miss my iphone desktop - Home Screen
I think I have been using my iphone too long because I am having a horrible time figuring out a design I like. I miss my iphone desktop.
If you haven't already, try out SPB mobile shell. It gives a very customizable interface w/ widgets.
I think I have that App .. I will first look on my computer for it . thanks. The thing that I find annoying that I haven't figured out is when I click on the phone to make a call. It opens half keypad half contacts. No "hard" buttons to scroll up and down through the contact list. .. correct ??

That is partialy correct. It actually brings up your call log. To pull up a number from your contacts just start typing on the keypads (either the number i.e 818 555 1234 or the name ie. Dad = 323). You can also click the all contacts button and go to a pure list of contacts, which you can then scroll through with the touch screen.
Hi all,
please excuse the vagueness of this post.
I have just been given a tp2 as a replacement to my td2
My wife also has the tp2 which she got a year ago
the whole look of the phone (software ) is totally diferent
for instance the program page used to list a few progs (your choice) and then you had to hit all progs to get them up.
i am guessing that its a different rom or different version of sense?
also how do i change/edit/remove some programs from the list?
cheers guys
you'll need a registry editor to get the job done here, you can find that in the Theme's and apps section, i'll be back with a link, but you have to navigate to --
HKLM\Software\HTC\EnlargeMenu
and where you see
EnableManilaStartMenu = 1
change the one to a zero and restart the phone, should work.
thanks for that
sorry to be thick but does that just enable me to move the prog icons or delete the progs as well
appreciate the help

You don't need to edit the registry to turn off Manila. This is easily done from the Today settings.

Different issues, my friend. Sense is the UI (aka Manila versions 2.1 and 2.5) you see when you start the phone. It is on by default, but you can turn it off in the Today setup and use the much less memory intensive standard Window Mobile screen. Go into the Today setup and turn off Sense by removing the check mark in the list and putting a check mark on Windows Default.
As for the bloatware that comes with the phone, anything on the ROM can not be removed except by flashing a new ROM. You can delete shortcuts from your start menu for programs you don't/won't use, but the programs will still be there. Do a search for Crud Scraper, a neat little tool that can 'remove' stuff from specific phone models (it worked great on my Tilt 2). Beyond that, read up as much as you can on modding your phone. This place is a great resource. Unfortunately, easy answers are hard to come by. You have to roll up your sleeves and get a little dirty.
Hi,
My TP2 (standard T-Mobile US 6.1 ROM) has been pretty stable - until two weeks ago, when it started freezing (or, more accurately, getting really, really slow, eventually requiring a reboot).
I've narrowed it down to the following:
If you type " I " (space, I, space) the following characters no longer appear on the screen (although the cursor moves). If you close then window (e.g an SMS) and re-open, then the characters are there, and saved - but from then on the device is unstable, and very, very slow until soft-reset.
I wondered if it was something to do with the custom dictionary, but that has a size of zero (which surprises me...), and also I've now set the 'suggest words' count to zero.
I really want to avoid a hard reset (I've got about 30 apps to re-install...), and am hoping that someone else has seen (and fixed) this.
I did search, and found the following old (2007) thread that describes a very similar problem - but no-one posted a solution...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317634
Thanks in advance!
-Steve
Very odd issue, and I would not know where in the registry to look... Solution - hard reset. Sorry to say. You said you have 30+ apps to install, but if you have the .cab, some Roms have an "Autoinstall" feature as to where you can make an "Autoinstall" folder and put all the cabs in there and they will install when you flash the new rom. If you have purchased the apps from the marketplace, there is an install all feature there as well.

I guess this gets consigned to the 'don't know why and will never be fixed' category...
I've hard reset the device, and taken the opportunity to install Jacko's 'Old School' ROM - now I need to get all those apps installed and configured....
