3G or not 3G - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

Hi there,
as you can see in the screenshot. I am not sure if I am connected with 3G or not. Acctually it looks like I am not. I think the small G should be a smal 3G, correct?
I had this problem with different rom and radio versions since I installed windows mobile 6.
Berfore I had WM5 with no problem.
How can I be sure if it is GPRS or 3G?
Cheers,
Christoph

Yep - you are connected with 3G. The little "G" icon is a little misleading, it just means you are connected - the icon to the left will indicate what sort of connection you have.
Cheers,
Steve.

There is already a solution for this if you are using WM6 ROM. 3G Icon: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293375

Thanks! Perfect!
I wonder why I did not find this by myself.
Thanks for the quick help!
Great Forum here!
Cheers!

I find this solution isn't that great to be honest. Although it does work in itself, it tends to break all the other icons that you get on the top bar.

Steve.

lol... on this topic, I was having problems with 3g... was up in London testing the video call beta pack and couldn't get any 3g signal...
turns out O2 supplied me with a non 3g chip!!!! How bloody useless are they!!! lol

Hi Steve,
I don't have the problem you described. Are you referring to the icon like a mail icon, appearing during an email or text message, as an example? If yes, then it still appears on mine.
I personally think too, that there are too many notifications already showing. For example, I get a text message, I get the email icon on the top bar, I get the bubble stating I have this # of text or email, and another notification on the left soft key. To me, having 3 notifications for one event is not good. First of all, it eats up memory. We all know, memory use is not one of the strong points in the Universal. Second, to negate all those notifications for one event, we choose which one to tap, and that is right, but who needs 3 notifications for one event in reality?
Sorry, for ranting on Microsoft...

WM5 AKU3 / WM6 little 3G icon

Hi,
On Universal WM5 AKU 3 versions, and WM6 the little G icon in the upper left corner of signal strength icon is not correctly displayed.
G is displayed instead of 3G when Universal is connected to the internet via 3G.
So my current toy is to fix this
Helmi talked about RSSI_Icons.dll on an other forum. ( Thanks )
RSSI_Icons.dll is responsible for radio signal strength and big data icon displaying.
I have written a new RSSI_Icons.dll.
It's a very first version, so it may contain bugs.
And unfortunately I don't have possibility to test it under different network conditions. It's working in my room(3G), and it's working If I try it on G network. But who knows
So anybody who likes can try it and report any bugs here. Thanks!
Install :
- unzip RSSI_Icons.zip and copy RSSI_Icons.dll to Universal's Windows directory
- soft reset
Uninstall:
- rename RSSI_Icons.dll to RSSI_Icon.dll for example
- soft reset
- After soft reset you will see original RSSI_Icons.dll because it's in ROM
- delete RSSI_Icon.dll
See the attached screenshots with the new RSSI_Icons.dll
First pic:
Universal is esablishing connection to the internet on 3G network.
Animated arrows, and little 3G icon!
Second Pic:
Universal is connected to the internet via 3G.
Notice little 3G icon
Version 2 (RSSI_IconsV2.zip)
---------------------------------
- Fixed small memory leak bug and slightly modified conditions
- Before installing uninstall previous version
I will leave previous version here if somebody have problem with V2.

Have tried it on O2 in London and seems to work fine. Couldn't get a 3G connection at first but I suspect that that was probably down to the weather at the time! Now I have a 3G connection, it seems to swap icons happily when I go from 3G to GPRS. Thanks for curing that annoying niggle!
Ok..work perfectly!
Installed... Nice tweak, congrats!

I niticed that I no longer was able to activate wifi with your dll. The option is not there and wifi would not activate in the com manager.

It's not my dll's fault. Maybe one program that was installed before.
I use wifi every day and I can activate it from the big G/3G icon and from Comm Manager.
And I'm using my own RSSI_Icons.dll of course

Hi is there a way of converting the large G/U icon to say 3G instead of U??
If you understand me. When connected to umts it says U but the small icons now say 3g. Hmmmmmm confusing.
Not working
Hello all,
Tried this in a i-amte JasJar, with Helmi's WM Aku 3.2, and did not get the little U, altough I was for sure conected in UMTS mode.
In fact, the only diference I could see, is that the normal, big U, dissapeared, and now it shows only big G, no matter wath kind of phone connection I get.
Any ideas?
TIA

I don't have this error because I'm Using Helmi WM6 1.1.
It seems that your OS didn't load my RSSI_Icons.dll at all.
The factory default RSSI_Icons.dll is only responsible for big U, and when you overwrite it with mine and your OS doesn't like it, you will only see big G.
The question is why..
Do you see warning bubbles when you run unsigned exe/dlls ?

Yes, I understand.
It's strange because big 3G icon is included in my RSSI_Icons.dll.
Windows should call the exported LoadOemDataIcon and LoadOemDataIcon should do LoadIcon for big 3G if HKLM\System\OEM_State\RSSI, CSAF value is 16. Can you check this registry value ?
If it's present, then something other is the problem.
Maybe windows doesn't call at all LoadOemDataIcon on your OS.
I don't know
But if you like drawing you can use a resource editor to change small 3Gs to Us. That's my last idea, but it must work
Hi,
I've been using this since it came out, both V1 and V2, however, I've noticed a problem with it, I think.
I don't get the text and mail notification icons in the top bar (possibly voicemail too), and when there are multiple notifications (when you get the speech bubble) then the lower bar is always empty.
I can't say all of these symptoms are due to this DLL, but the text icon definately seems to be.
For info, I'm using Helmi's v1.1 Crossbow.
Cheers,
Steve.

I noticed on mine, I don't have the small bubble notification on top like on AKU 2 ROMs, but it was replaced by a big bubble notification showing how much I was charged with an OK button. A temporary mail icon appeared for 5 seconds followed by a left soft key notification, which I setup from settings. I also have the flashing orange light setup with sounds. So I think we have a lot of options here to remind us that there is a message.
I forgot to mention, I am using PDAViet's ROM.
I'm definately missing some of the icons on the top bar - they have returned now I've uninstalled.
Cheers,
Steve.

You don't say which version of windows mobile you are running.
That screenshot is from a wm2003. On my blue angel with wm5, the wifi on indicator is a small antenna tower looking thing. Otherwise, I have a small x with a pair of arrows pointing either direction above it.
Sorry,
I'm Using WM2003SE standard o2 ROM latest version.
My wifi indicator is the same as yours, however it seems it should be the W

Question about 3G icon in new AT&T WM6 ROM

Hello everyone.
My first post here, although I have been an avid reader for a while now. I'd like to say thanks to vp3G and others for the excellent cooked ROMS.
My question: I just started using the new official WM6 ROM from AT&T. My fiance and myself both use AT&T 8525's, and I loaded the new ROM on both of our phones. Now, we can be sitting right next to one other on our couch, and her phone will read as having full bars with the 3G icon to the left of them. Then I'll look at my phone and I have full bars with the E icon next to them.
Would anybody here have any idea as to why? Identical phones, with identical ROMs and identical radio versions, yet she gets 3G while I only seem to get Edge, with the phones sitting side-by-side on the coffee table.
I'm confused on this one ...any ideas? Thanks a bunch in advance for any help and for the great site!

Yes, they are the same. We bought the phones a few months back and both shipped with one of the new AT&T SIM cards with the 3G logo on it. I used to get sporadic 3G at home with the older radio versions, but she has always had rock solid 3G on hers. It's weird, I know.

Well, since you looked under the settings>phone; you have the enable band tab reg edit right? If so make sure this is on Auto.
Couldn't tell from your post if you had this exactly.

I'm feeling kind of silly right now...I'm not sure what you're referring to. I open up the com manager in the lower right of the today screen, and then the left soft key becomes a "settings" tab. Opening that just takes me to the phone setting menu (Phone, Services, Network, etc...).
I haven't made any changes to the ROM, just using what it had available.

Ok. Go to Start-Settings-Phone
See if there is a tab on the bottom that says Band...
If you do then make sure that it says Auto on both.
If not then check out the hermes wiki and go to tweaking the hermes registry...
If your are using the 'official' att rom, and if it's anything like the old roms, then the band tab will not be there...

I there a way to get the data connection arrows to work properly?
I've searched all over and I can't find an answer. I found info for ## codes and for 911 but nothing for data.

So I finally got to the bottom of it.... it is NOT and issue... see when in an EVDO coverage area EVDO is DATA ONLY so the X symbol you see if for no Voice connection... is you force your connection to 1X or if you are in a non EVDO coverage area you will see that the icon with an X converts to an icon in 1X and the second icon is the one that actually refers to your data connection which should show arrows whether you are in EVDO or 1X... make sense???
If you look at a Diamond or Touch Pro CDMA you will see the exact same thing... if we had EVDV (data and Voice) the I guess we will see both icons all the time...
Sorry page froze while adding link see below
No that doesn't make sense at all because if I use a vogue dialer that's not the case. The icons work as they always have. The arrows should always be there but they are grey when not connected.
Also I have a link to a ppcgeeks thread that is supposed to fix ## and 911 the dll changes the call log icons but supposedly it works. I haven't tested because I don't want to actually get through to 911

you mean if you use a Vogue dialer it changes the icons shown by the enlarge title bar app???
The icons in your post are the ones shown by the enlarge title bar app... not sure how the phonecanvas.dll would affect that... but if you have more insight that would be great....
Yeah, with the vogue dialer I didn't have that icon at all. It didn't show evdo or 1x it was just gone. For the data connection arrows they were always there but grey when there wasn't an active connection.
I stand Corrected. I installed a cdma to double check because its been a while. The x arrow icon still displays but the arrows went back grey when not connected.
I'm having trouble following this thread... So, it is confirmed then that the Opal dialer is what's causing the connection arrows to remain at a constant white, rather than fluctuating between gray/white to indicate an idle/active data connection? Thanks,
That's exactly what causes it but no one seems to have a fix for it. Any dialer that is designed for a gsm phone will produce solid data errors on a cdma phone.

Thanks, so are there other "dialers" that one could install to replace the Opal dialer? Does this require cooking a new ROM? (I didn't cook mine, just using WDM's 1.6 ROM for the Vogue)

Cool, I'll check that out. Am I losing functionality by going to a different dialer? - in other words, is the Opal dialer the current "en-vogue" (pun intended) dialer?

[Q] Few problems with my Desire, any ideas?

I'm using unbranded Desire with no mods/rooting, udgraded to the latest official Android 2.2 version.
Here are my problems:
1. People say that they couldn't reach me (number unavailable) while I was on the network all the time. Doesn't happen very often (or I just don't know that) but is really annoying when it does.
2. I am connected to my home WiFi but browser/other programs say that network connection is not available. I have to turn wifi off and on again for it to work. Can it have something to do with the "energy management" widget?
3. My phone is calling people. I get a callback from people saying I called them but they couldn't hear anything (phone was in my pocket). I was wondering if it wasn't the case when I am finishing a call and pressing the red button to end the call but someone on the other side hung up earlier and when I press, the "call" function is activated. However I remember 1 or 2 times when it was definetely not the case.
4. I desperately need a PDF reader that allows to continue reading a book in the place where I finished last time. At the moment I need to be very careful not to close the pdf reader app. When I do I need to look for the page, really annoying. This should be a free app (Google doesn't want my money, they don't allow people from my country into paid appstore )
Hello, 1&2 are really weird problems, they might be connected with the radio, can you check your radio version in settings\about\software\baseband. Some people had problems with the official OTA. Just to be sure - is your wifi alright on other devices and are you sure you have sufficient network coverage. If you download torrents with a crappy router you are likely to get problems. If you're in a low signal area it is possible to lose signal while your device is in your pocket e.g. closer to the ground, when you pick it up you see the bars, when it's in the pocket the network dies. One thing you can easily do is a factory reset , this way we'll find out if any software is causing the problem
3 - you might be turning your device on and then pressing the screen and then calling people, it is not unheard of . Ask them if they hear any noise like cars, people passing by and other stuff, if they do then that's the case
4 - search the market, there are a few, you'll need to try them to see which works best for you

If you only have a 2G connection, and are actively using data, all incoming calls will get diverted to voicemail because 2G only supports voice or data - not both at the same time. This is not an issue if you are in 3G coverage, when you can have simultaneous voice and data.
Note that this is a network side issue - 2G networks can be configured to prioritize voice over data, so that if a call comes through data is suspended, but as far as I'm aware most networks (in the UK at least) do not support this.
Regards,
Dave

I guess there is no point going to the store with a problem that cannot be reproduced :-/
Anyway I don't think it's something physical, I suppose software reset will fix everything.
I had that with Nokias, there was a main board problem (every now and then it said "invalid sim card"). Every time I sent it back to the manufacturer, it came back saying "software replaced, tested, everything ok".
Thanks for help anyway ;-)

Thanks Dave, actually my phone is set to automatically choose network type and I am using a widget to turn off mobile data since I have WiFi at home and only turn it on when I'm outdoors.
I heard that some phones cannot decide whether they should log into the 3G or 2G and that may be the issue. I have changed the settings to use only 3G, we'll see how it works.
BTW: Dave, is it London Ealing? I used to work in Ealing O'Neill's pub back in my student days :-D
