I was wondering if there is such a device that allows you to tune into a radio frequency and receive your mp3 / wma music broadcast over. It would be handy for the car. I know its really creating a pirate radio station but the Apple Ipod's have the technology.

You can do this, you will need the mini-USB to 3,5MM addaptor cable (search the forum, it is listed in many places within the Artemis section) then get an FM Transmitter, they were made legal for use in the UK at the begining of last December. In use they are not perfect with signal loss/ other stations bleeding into what you are listening to - PC World for a legal device or E-bay and take a chance - Mike

I don't know where you can check this, but many countries changed their laws affecting "illegal Radio Stations". In Germany for example the FM Transmitters are legal by now, as long as they don't radio over more than say 10 metres.

I don't suppose there is any way of knowing this without actually buying one is there? I don't fancy spending £30 if it won't work .

I've heard this before, but I use the same USB cable and charger for my Orbit as for my RAZR V3 and they both seem to work correctly (i.e. they charge and sync to Wintel AND mac).
What exactly is the difference? Isn't USB a standard, there should be no variation.

My caution was about the fm radio. If this was true for the fm radio, we could all listen via speakr phone using "any sync/charge cable at all"
Isn't that more to do with the way the orbit/Artemis implement its FM aerial rather than any differences in the USB pinouts?

First, sorry for my bad english.
I have a software solution to use the FM Radio without Headset, i know that in the headset is the antenna!
You must change a value in the Registry under:
HKLM/System/State/Hardware/ and now you must chance the Headset value to 1.
When you plug the headset in the device is change the Value automatic to one. When ist not plugged than is 0.
But without antenna i can´t find radioprogramms :-(

I can't get any stations either and it doesn't look like you can specify a station if it doesn't scan and identify it. Hmmm. Also, it doesn't look like the registry hack stays after a soft reset either.

As for the Atom/6828, the external speaker can still be powered on with the earphones plugged in. This feature is only available to the radio application.

I'm a bit confused. How does TCM work when the FM device only recognizes stations or transmisions when earphones are pluged in? When in navigation, with TCM capable software, you have to plug in the earphones so you can use TCM? That sound a bit strange to me. Can someone provide a clarification please.

TMC is encoded in rds, since the artemis is able to use RDS when using the antenna in theory it should be able to translate the tmc out of the RDS. Thus this is merely a software tweak. Its up to us to couple all the loose strings...
Thanks, but that wasn't my question? I know how TCM works, but as stated in a post above, the artemis can tune in to a radio station only with pluged-in earphones. Thus I count one thing to another and come to this conclusion: no pluged-in earphones = no radio station = no RDS = no TCM!? If that's the case the whole TMC feature in artemis is just a joke.
So is TCM working with the bare artemis (none attached wires of any kind)?

Here's my question regarding this radio issue for all you electrical engineers out there:
Would it be possible to construct a combo mini-usb radio antenna and audio adapter that would take the place of the earphones as the antenna yet be small enough not to stick out much more than the current 3.5mm headphone adapter that is available on Expansys?

That way you could enable the radio and other functions and still use your good headphones. Or, if the audio adapter and antenna couldn't be combined, with a "mini usb radio antenna", you could at least use A2DP with bluetooth headphones to listen to the radio.
Just food for thought...what do you think?

The FM radio does not work with either the audio adapter or the audio/power splitter. I have both and just get the message to plug in the earphones that came with it.

Change the Registry (Post #1 here), and select output in Program Menu->Output "Headset"...
But Radio need Antena!
That was exactly my point in my previous post! We all know that the current adapters will allow you to CONNECT a 3.5mm headset to the P3300, the problem is the lack of an antenna in standard headphones to make the radio work. It would seem to me that a mini usb to 3.5 adapter with a BUILT-IN radio antenna would solve this problem.
Now if only I had the capital and the electronic knowledge to invent it!
the fm radio band is a 98 cm band so you need at least 50 cm cable to have a decent signal. With other words..if you cut the antenne (cable for a mobile phone or pda) you loose the signal. Nothing more or nothing less than this.
Better would be a small cable you could run in and out your phone automaticly (by hand pulling or something) when you're in need of the radio.

Just a small correction: The FM radio band is 3m or 300 cm wavelength. So the best antennalength would be a quarter wave which equals 75 cm

This is a great solution, but you cannot derive the sound to an a2dp headsets, isn't it?
Has anybody actually managed to use their own headphones using an adapter. Thinking of buying the XDA Orbit but I'm cautious about the usb headphone socket.

Expansys will ship the adapter on the 8th of December (http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=138247) . I haven't found this adapter anywhere else and I don't know of anyone who has it (except one guy in this very forum???) so I can't let you know if it's acceptable and working as promised or not.
One thing that should be VERY interesting is if the radio reception is good with this adapter and a pair of standard headphones attached to it (and using the FM radio registry hack). Has anybody (who has the adapter of course...) tried it?

Any progress on adapters for this device? It's a bit of a setback to not be able to use your own headphones with this device isn't it? Maybe I just need to get an ipod and shut up but hell, seems like a shame when i could use my old magician as an mp3 player.

it makes no sence to use the 'hack', cause all You will get is broadband noise without an antenna connected.
if you are familar with soldering, you can open the mic-housing (carefully with your fingernails), unsolder the headphones, and replace it with an 3.5mm female jack. So you can use Your own headphones, and the antenna is still connected.

No it doesnt, although i have this adapter in my car so i can run the mp3s off my phone, and the car stereo has radio anyway, which i may add never has anything good on anyway
Also, when this adapter is connected to the car, when someone rings i can hear them through the cars speakers but the adapter blocks the microphone signal so the person calling cannot hear me

This is actually quite easy to do, just buy a socket from Maplin for about £3 then solder between the mic and the crappy htc eadphones. Viola - I now have my senheissers back AND mic and radio function! OK I do have about 2 metres of cable to route around my clothing but that just adds to the fun.

Just did that last weekend, but when I popped open the housing with my fingernail, well there really is not enough room to fit a jack socket in there, with the headset that comes with the o2 orbit anyway, the mic is right in the way. I had a really slim socket all ready to go which I'd pulled out of a tiny broken sony radio. So I had to just chop the end off a 3.5mm extension lead with a nice ready moulded on socket. It was a 5 min job and looks like it was made that way, everything still works.
Anyone confirm if the receiver is built into the phone, as opposed to being built into the wired stereo headphones?

Don't think that's right. Usually, the radio is built into the phone but you need headphones connected - not necessarily the supplied headphones - for the radio to work. That's certainly how it was with my HD2. Otherwise, it means you could not use your own headset.
The headset cable usually acts as the antenna.
Usually these type of devices (phones/mp3 players etc...) have the receiver in the device but they use the headphones as the antenna so if you want to get any signal you need some (Any) headphones connected.

Ofcourse the reciever is in the phone and yes you can use any headset.
The headset purely acts as an antenna.
There are reports that non OEM headsets are a bit hit and miss. Some work, some don't.
Not a feature I will get to use as I have bluetooth headphones

Question - have you tried siwtching your phone off & back on? Your thread made me realise I hadn't tried out the radio on my desire, or the headphone jack for that matter....
Imagine my surprise when I tried the radio with normal headphones and the radio didn't work ... so I tried the official headphones, and they didn't work either, whether for radio or even playing music .... so I grumped about it and figured the jack was faulty. Then I tried powering the phone off & back on (early firmware) and bingo, the radio works.
Oh and standard headphones work just fine too.

Hi.
This is my first post on this forum. I'm happy to find so many skilled guys on smartphones and android, specifically (though I've never had smartphone development experiences yet ).
I'm very seriously thinking about buying a HTC Desire (I think it's gorgeous) but the missing RDS feature is quite annoying to me.
Maybe someone of you could tell me if the radio chipset is capable of handling RDS, and so a rooted firmware will fix the problem?

My iPod ones work fine...
My Sennheiser earphones do work with the FM Radio, but the reception is quite poor unfortunately
The HTC ones supplied work perfectly, reception is great, shame about the quality of the earphones themselves though.

Maybe armored cable on good earphones don't make a good antenna :/
PS : don't know if "armored" is the correct word in english I want to say "a cable with much protection over electric fields".

No worries, I know what you mean
I rarely use the radio anyway (got around 10GB of music and videos to keep me occupied), so I guess I will be sticking to my Sennheiser earphones.
Has anyone else had any issues with the radio? When I was using it the other day it completely freaked out and locked up my phone.
Oh and when I was first setting it up and went to set presets it knew the names for some of the stations already, how is it doing that without RDS?
Does it also have FM transmitter?

Are you sure? After i tuned to several stations, it's picked up the names fine. BBC Radio 1 is displayed as Radio 1, BBC Radio 2 is shown as BBC R2

Is it possible to tweak the Tp2 so I can listen to the radio without the need for a usb-cable?
It is possible but don't know how. However if you flash an Energy ROM he has already carried out the tweak and it will work without the cable, however you will need to be very close to a radio station to get it as the cable is the aerial and without it there is no aerial.

there is a registry setting in state for plugged in head phones. you wont get any signal at all without headphones. i have an adapter that cost $0.01 i got off amazon, it sets the state unlock the stock htc adapter and it provides half signal (for being only 3") but thats good enough for radio.

Like I've read, there is no audio over USB support built-in to our mighty Desire.
I tried a few different microUSB to 3.5mm jack adapters from ebay - even one declared as for HTC Desire. Checked the usb-pins-assignment also and it seems that HTC hasn't built in (or turned off) that function in opposite to some other manufacturers.
So will it be possible to write a rom or a kernel, that'll support that?
If it is possible, I would appreciate a few hints what I'll have to do, to get this thing working!

Its not possible to send analog audio signal over the usb since its a standard usb plug. Only the old htc phones with extUSB had audio, but its was a bigger plug with more pins.
On that note i dont get why you want to get audio from there, when theres a nice 3.5mm jack socket on the top of the phone.

Yes, since there are no music docks for desire I built my own and it has to be possible, other phones with microUSB have that function - why not ours?
I know the old extUSB plug from my magic, there it is no problem. But there must be a way to get this working! I think it is only a software and/or driver issue.
If you'll get a music dock you'll have to plugin the phone + jack everytime? ? ? Look on ebay there are a few universal docks over microUSB, but not working for the nearly best and most sold android phone on market?
Pls give me some hints if there is a way to do that - everything is possible!

Umm, well not really. Because who says that the USB port of your phone is connected the right way internally to actually SEND data over the cable/dock.
I have no idea on how to do it. Thats just what I think, but with Android, a LOT is possible

YEAH IT IS!
On Nexus one they built in extra pins for docking and audio over that works like a charm.
I'm having a few adapters microUSB to 3.5mm jack for Motorola,Samsung,Nokia...phones from ebay, but not one reaction from Desire
Maybe the adapter for Desire needs a Digital-to-analog converter to get analog audio out of the microUSB port.
But no technical details over that from HTC - does anyone know more about the microUSB connections on our Desire? Tried to get a technical manual for Desire, but no chance on google...
If there is no other solution, I'll have to disassemble my expensive Desire to get a view on connections and maybe some hints which IC is managing the microUSB.
Does any dev know what would be possible by modding a kernel or rom?

im also looking for something like this, though i want digital-audio out. for example in my car, plug and play so i get spotify from my usb to my stereo and able to control spotify from my stereo. there is no problem for this if you use iphone, though id like to be able to do it on my htc.

Ability to stream out the audio through USB would be something nice to have.
