BlueTooth reception Sucks....

I've used three SX66 vairiants of the Blue Angle and all of them have Crappy Bluetooth reception. You have to have the phone is your shirt pocket on the side where the headset is.
I know its not the headset as we have tried 4 headsets and they all work great with other Bluetooth phones. I can answer my Nokia phone from 2 offices down the hall with my Logitech Traveler. On my SX66 I cant answer it from my Cargo Pants Pocket with out getting masive static.
All the SX66s I've used are the BT v 3900...
Any Suggestions?

Same Friggin' problem
I have been up all night searching for an answer to this as I thought it was perhaps a problem related to upgrading. Then I remembered it was doing it before I upgraded. I wonder if it has anything to do with radio version, etc.
I would really, REALLY hate to go back to using the default earplugs that tangle if you think too hard.
Come on guys, is there a BT reception fix I'm overlooking? I was in a conference call yesterday from home and it sounded like someone was balling up candy wrappers in the phone on my end and the other's until I had to disable the headset and continue with the XDA IIs to my ear. :evil:

Per the nekkid blue angel pictures from the wiki, the bluetooth antenna looks to be a tiny chip looking thing...
Has anyone considered (or even did) replacing it with something a bit more substantial?
The wifi antenna is kind of small as well. GSM antenna looks OK.

this is what I have been using for the past 4 months and has been great.
I have tried different types of Jabra BT, Mobile traveller.. none has worked and waste of money.
until i find this one... works great.

I can't find the page that lists which one is which now (naturally once I'm looking for it, it hides), but IIRC the wifi antenna is that small clipish looking thing at D-20, the bluish one at H-20 is the bluetooth, and the big green thing at the top of the board (letters C-K, numbers 1-6) is the GSM antenna.
Looking closer at the board, it would almost appear that there is an external antenna hookup as well for the wifi?
If I didn't have a cracked screen, I'd take mine apart to find out. I'm worried that if I did, the screen would totally stop working. :-(

That seems a bad location for the BT aerial to me with the charge socket at the back and all that shielding above.

Agreed, it is a bad location. Especially if one considers that often, one holds the unit in hand at that location, covering up the antennas.
Assuming that is the bluetooth antenna (I'm fairly sure it is, considering that is looks similar to the one in the dongle you linked to), I would think that it would be better to use one of those wifi antennas in the ebay link (or something similar) and try to keep everything internal to the phone. Since bluetooth does run on the same frequency as wifi, in theory, it should work.
No one wants to use a phone with a bunch of wires hanging off of it, otherwise why would we be complaining about the bluetooth range?
Now, if that other connector looking part is the wifi, the battery normally covers it. Unless there is a way to extend that to another user added jack, the same idea(s) for the bluetooth would apply.
I do not know how tight the clearances are inside the angle, as I've never opened mine. one would think that there might be a way to run the antenna wire on the inside of the back, or along the sides of the plastics. Perhaps around the GSM antenna area? Or would that cause too much interference to the phone/bt/wifi?

Love the read about this, but there was quite a discussion about this problem when the BA was released. I argued it with orange for pretty much the entire length of my contract, it was a faulty bluetooth driver. and surprisingly enough O2 and t-mobile got it right with their XDAIIs and the MDA III firmware's but Orange didn't get it right till almost about a year or more later. needless to say it started working after i pugraded the firmware later on. since then i'm now runnign t-mobiles firmware on it with the o2 active program ( hahaha yea best of both ) and it's been fine for me. So look into upgrading to any of the offical roms from whatever network your looking for, if' you've already unlocked the phone, great as should remain unlocked, if doesn't just re-run the unlocker

Mine is an XDA iis form O2 with the last offical O2 firmware wm2003 1.40.242 WWE on, I`ve also tried T-mobiles 1.42 and upgraded the radio to 1.15 but bluetooth still sucks with a headset!
Maybe you got lucky or maybe its the headset you are using.

The thing about Modding the chip or placing an antennae jack IS that, all of which that is exposed, in the naked pics of the Blue Angel, are all in fact, canned and can be difficult to expose, to do any modding, without micro precision equipment and a steady hand. I have accomplished modding regular cell phones this way, however, this device is a bit more at risk and can get expensive and messy. I have a few boards, I have acquired through buying spare parts for mine in the case of accidents, of which I have performed with ALL the help of these forums. I will work on this, at this point IF you folks do not have any other alternatives, outside hanging pointless wires hanging around (me thinks that is WHY the bluetooth and wireless technologies were implemented?) With any success, I will report, outside failure, with some sort of procedure and details, that maybe someone with a bit more knowledge and expertise can modify to a possible easier closure on this REAL problem. Sure there are maybe better devices that can, maybe measure up to this Blue Angel, but I love my Angel, even with the flaws!
It has been a great challenge and all of the possibilities that XDA development has brought to the table.
In the last 2 years I have had this phone this is my FIRST posting.
The Bluetooth has been my ONLY real problem. I have to carry it in my shirt pocket using a BT headset and it is still really bad at that. I have used some of the best headsets and gone to great expense, to try and alleviate what I thought, by chance, that I could have finally found one that would superceid
the problem, however, to no avail, I still have the same problem.
If by chance that I could actually find a bigger chip, I think I would have to have the right drivers for it and will have to lead a command string, I am guessing through going to the kitchen and cooking up some ExtROM for the 'moddapplication'?
Blackberry has, I think, one of the strongest chips available. I have a 7100t that i could answer from 300 ft of a house with walls. My 650 isn't that good.
I apologize for being long winded, I suppose I am catching up from not communicating in the past, but I followed the rules of this site, and I haven't needed to ask a question and not needed to help someone else, because you guys have had the answers in these forums. Without further a'due........
Finally, if you have any FRESH ideas or direction on this bluetooth delima, outside using a can opener, .........***please***, let me know............

Headphone adapter

Has anybody actually managed to use their own headphones using an adapter. Thinking of buying the XDA Orbit but I'm cautious about the usb headphone socket.

Expansys will ship the adapter on the 8th of December (http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=138247) . I haven't found this adapter anywhere else and I don't know of anyone who has it (except one guy in this very forum???) so I can't let you know if it's acceptable and working as promised or not.
One thing that should be VERY interesting is if the radio reception is good with this adapter and a pair of standard headphones attached to it (and using the FM radio registry hack). Has anybody (who has the adapter of course...) tried it?

well if it's the same as the spv m3100 socket then this should work, not that i have any confidence in my ability to successfully do it

Any progress on adapters for this device? It's a bit of a setback to not be able to use your own headphones with this device isn't it? Maybe I just need to get an ipod and shut up but hell, seems like a shame when i could use my old magician as an mp3 player.

Does this registry hack exist? I would love to be able to use my own headphones instead of the crappy XDA ones.

set Headset to '1'
but the next time, your headset is connected and reconnected, the registry entry is again reset to '0'
it makes no sence to use the 'hack', cause all You will get is broadband noise without an antenna connected.
if you are familar with soldering, you can open the mic-housing (carefully with your fingernails), unsolder the headphones, and replace it with an 3.5mm female jack. So you can use Your own headphones, and the antenna is still connected.

No it doesnt, although i have this adapter in my car so i can run the mp3s off my phone, and the car stereo has radio anyway, which i may add never has anything good on anyway
Also, when this adapter is connected to the car, when someone rings i can hear them through the cars speakers but the adapter blocks the microphone signal so the person calling cannot hear me

This is actually quite easy to do, just buy a socket from Maplin for about £3 then solder between the mic and the crappy htc eadphones. Viola - I now have my senheissers back AND mic and radio function! OK I do have about 2 metres of cable to route around my clothing but that just adds to the fun.

Just did that last weekend, but when I popped open the housing with my fingernail, well there really is not enough room to fit a jack socket in there, with the headset that comes with the o2 orbit anyway, the mic is right in the way. I had a really slim socket all ready to go which I'd pulled out of a tiny broken sony radio. So I had to just chop the end off a 3.5mm extension lead with a nice ready moulded on socket. It was a 5 min job and looks like it was made that way, everything still works.

It's in the headphones, as usual.

Don't think that's right. Usually, the radio is built into the phone but you need headphones connected - not necessarily the supplied headphones - for the radio to work. That's certainly how it was with my HD2. Otherwise, it means you could not use your own headset.
The headset cable usually acts as the antenna.

Usually these type of devices (phones/mp3 players etc...) have the receiver in the device but they use the headphones as the antenna so if you want to get any signal you need some (Any) headphones connected.

Maybe you should really think before writing though

Ofcourse the reciever is in the phone and yes you can use any headset.
The headset purely acts as an antenna.

There are reports that non OEM headsets are a bit hit and miss. Some work, some don't.
Not a feature I will get to use as I have bluetooth headphones

Question - have you tried siwtching your phone off & back on? Your thread made me realise I hadn't tried out the radio on my desire, or the headphone jack for that matter....
Imagine my surprise when I tried the radio with normal headphones and the radio didn't work ... so I tried the official headphones, and they didn't work either, whether for radio or even playing music .... so I grumped about it and figured the jack was faulty. Then I tried powering the phone off & back on (early firmware) and bingo, the radio works.
Oh and standard headphones work just fine too.

Hi.
This is my first post on this forum. I'm happy to find so many skilled guys on smartphones and android, specifically (though I've never had smartphone development experiences yet ).
I'm very seriously thinking about buying a HTC Desire (I think it's gorgeous) but the missing RDS feature is quite annoying to me.
Maybe someone of you could tell me if the radio chipset is capable of handling RDS, and so a rooted firmware will fix the problem?

My iPod ones work fine...

My Sennheiser earphones do work with the FM Radio, but the reception is quite poor unfortunately
The HTC ones supplied work perfectly, reception is great, shame about the quality of the earphones themselves though.

Maybe armored cable on good earphones don't make a good antenna :/
PS : don't know if "armored" is the correct word in english I want to say "a cable with much protection over electric fields".

No worries, I know what you mean
I rarely use the radio anyway (got around 10GB of music and videos to keep me occupied), so I guess I will be sticking to my Sennheiser earphones.

Has anyone else had any issues with the radio? When I was using it the other day it completely freaked out and locked up my phone.
Oh and when I was first setting it up and went to set presets it knew the names for some of the stations already, how is it doing that without RDS?

Does it also have FM transmitter?

Are you sure? After i tuned to several stations, it's picked up the names fine. BBC Radio 1 is displayed as Radio 1, BBC Radio 2 is shown as BBC R2

[Q] 3.5 mm broken, any way for audio?

My 3.5 mm input is broken. The plug is broken inside it and I tried everything but I can't get it out. Is there any other way for me to listen to music (without the speaker)? I'm asking what the alternatives are. Can I use bluetooth or will this give me problems since the phone still thinks there is a headphone plugged in it? Can somebody try that out that has a bluetooth headset? I also ordered this thing:
MicroUSB to 3.5mm Adapter from SpecialPhones.nl (I can't post links yet)
Is that possible? Or do I also have the problem that the device still thinks something is still plugged in it?

If you have time, could you check if it is possible to get music out of the bluetooth headphones while a 3.5mm is plugged in it?

I hope there is an option, commuting without music has been really torture for me

I actually prefer bt to the 3.5 jack, it's all I use. And I don't think the quality suffers at all, I found it to be louder. Although the InChargeAudioBT thing I use in the car may be amplified - I dunno.

I think it chooses jack sound over Bluetooth, haven't tried though (Bluetooth headset is at work).

man, this is the simplest part of the phone you can change.
when you put off the cover housing, (6 screws), at the bottom, you have 1 screw , unscrew it, detach the flex on the left, and put out the jack part (everything is fixed on a plastic attachment)
put the new one, connect the flex again, screw, put cover housing, 6 screws and you are done.
cheap piece more over.. 7 min to do the whole stuff , guaranteed

Hmm, thought it would be hard. Is it easy to get that cover off? And do you know where I can buy a replacement for this model?
I want both option open, so if anyone has time to check that Bluetooth thingy that would be great

If you have the 3.5 mm jack plugged in to the Jack hole and you have enabled Bluetooth headphones, you will only hear from BT headphones!
At least it works for me on my modified stock Jelly Bean 4.2.1 with CyanogenMod 9 Music Player!

I'm looking into buy the bluetooth if I get it repaired or not. The phone (not only this phone) keeps raping my earphones plugs (and vice versa the jack now) because it is so big and keeps pushing against my body when I walk or when I am on a bike.

I order the audio jack and a set of opening tools for around 16 euro. Seems a lot cheaper than the 60 euro the repair guy was asking

is there reasonable radio reception on new units with integrated twin fakra connector

as i crashed my old pumpkin head unit, i am looking for a new one, for my Audi A4
(my current model is out of stock)
I consider ordering this one now:

This one has already the Audi/VW main-connector right at the radio, also a twin fakra connector and even an integrated CAN-modul. So there will be way less wiring spaghetti behind the unit, which seems really nice to me.
But i am a bit afraid, that the radio reception could be bad...
I don´t really trust this ex China-factory twin Fakra connector there. Usually one had to use a external powered antenna boost-adapter for those android head units. And even with those boost-adapters, the reception was never as good, as with the original radio. Because no adapter could replace the twin-receiver diversity function of the original VW/Audi radios.
Sooo....
With this new unit, i would have to directly connect my antennas... without any adapters or boosters...
Has anyone an idea if this really works well on those new units??
I don´t think those new units have two receivers installed?! Or do they?
Is this twin fakra adapter at least powered?
I hope someone has already played with a similar unit and can give some comments..

In theory it should be better with a port for the diversity antenna as well. At the end of the day this is the main reason why the original radio has better reception.

I've got the Erisin ES3015V which I suspect is similar (it has the same VW-specific connections). I have never owned any other android head unit, so I can't compare the radio reception, but I can tell you that it's not as good as the original radio. My guess is it's somewhere in between.

Do you know, is this Twin-Fakra Connector at least powered? (12V) or do we need to add something here on our own?
Are you satisfied with the rear speaker volume?
This is also something, i had to modify on my first head unit.

Sorry, don't know if it's powered or not, but I'd be very interested in hearing about your findings .I haven't noticed the sound from the rear speakers being too low, but then again, sound quality overall isn't exactly brilliant. I've been thinking about adding a powered subwoofer, but I've read a lot of stuff on here about these units being underpowered on the RCA outputs, so I'm not sure if it'll be worth it.
