Map4Pda working on the Artemis - free GPS/Map software - P3300, MDA Compact III General

For those who dont have any sat nav software or if you roam around the world - Map 4 PDA is excellent and its free!
You can choose map provider - google maps, yahoo maps, virtual earth or ask.com maps and it has satellite images too!
Detects the internal gps nicely and downloads the maps via gprs - n.b. data cost!
here is the link http://map4pda.com/download.1.4.htm
btw MGMaps for java midlet manager does not work even with risodoro updated midlet manager http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286604
but the new midlet manager is worth installing and does so without a problem.

Hi
Thank you, thank you and thank you once again. I was really blown away by Micro$oftLiveSearch and then this program comes along...oh boy...all I can say is F***ING AWESOME!!! I would say these two programs belong in the Extended ROM (or at least immediately installed after a Hard-Reset) of every GPS-capable device. Now I only need a new provider contract with worldwide unlimited GPRS/EDGE access ;-) .
I would say the Artemis (O2 Orbit) is the best buy I did last year. I really like this device allthough it's a bit lacking speed and storage and the small display needs getting used to (had an Alpine before).

Map 4 PDA
Hello folks, Im new to the forum and have a quick question to ask.
First off, thanks alot for the Map4PDA - I have the artemis and believe this software to be very useful and professional - especially given that its free. This is a great alternative to shelling out £100 on TomTom. However does anybody know how to download and store various maps onto your phone, for instance if I wanted to store a map of central London and one of central Glasgow - then that way I could easily check the maps on my phone whilst out on the streets for directions? Further to this, my phone is constantly trying to connect to my GPRS which is annoying, if I had the pre-stored maps and was just looking at them then the phone wouldn't do this right ?
Any help is much appreciated!
Cheers

Welcome to the forum - I downloaded the maps connected to my pc & interner otherwise your gprs charges will be high. In the options set max no if images to 999 and no of files to 999.
The maps are kept in application data\searchquest\map4pda - so in theory you could download all the maps for a particular city and backup on your storage card. Then copy files back when in that city - a bit messy but works.
Also checkout windows live seach - http://wls.live.com/
I found it even better overall - I will add a writeup later.

Thanks for this Mark, I will await your reply! I have changed the settings to 999 for each but I am a little puzzled as to how to download and store the maps and also how to choose your map provider ? I am assuming thats what you mean when you point to windows live ? Maybe I'm being a complete dummy as this is all new to me! I used to own a Razor and cant believe how stupid I was, If I can get these maps that will be another area the phone blows the pants off of any other at the moment. Thanks for all your help!

No problem - to change map provider - menu\map\map provider and there is a choice of 4.
Goto menu\map\satellite view - is one bit i love!
To save maps - try this connect device via active sync to pc - go on internet on pc - do not enable gps unless you want maps for where you are - menu\map\move to location - put in you location and download the maps you want.
Then through file explorer goto \application data\searchquest\map4pda\
and there will be many files inside - if you look at these with pictures and video app you will see them.
You can copy and paste all these files and name them the city for later use.

Worldwide?
I tried putting in an Australian Post Code and it downloaded US maps. Is this a worldwide program?

Likewise, my UK postcode landed me in the middle of San Francisco... more than a few miles off!

It seems to be only accurate with the names not the post code.

GPS works a treat, though, I got a fix sitting in my office building with another room above me, a building in front of me, a building behind me and not much in the way of open sky. The result; an impressive satellite photo of the office with a big red target on it... disturbing!
Still, very cool app, it's just an address search improvement away from perfection.

I have these problems too but as you say you can just type in the address with the Nation at the end to solve those ones. I've done all those things you say Mark but another quick question, are you only able to view these maps through the video or pictures settings? It's just the size of the screen is small and its a pain to constantly flick through pictures to find the appropriate map. Is there any way that you can save the maps so that you can open your map4PDA software and just navigate within the software, i.e. if you had the maps you could just use the stylus to scroll around within the area of maps you have downloaded? Have I explained myself clearly ??
Its also a pain when moving across the screen to a tile of map you dont have then the machine goes into overdrive trying to connect to GPRS to download the maps!
Any help is again much appreciated

Yes once you have downloaded all the maps you need - you can look at the maps through map4pda - when the gprs starts to connect - click on it and press disconnect. Make sure the map is not in full screen so you can make sure its not connecting again - or turn the phone part off i.e. fllight mode - click on the signal strength meter.

Google Maps images dont show but all others do? - Artemis
Hi
I just downloaded Maps4PDA 1.4.7.19608 and it works great with the internal GPS in the Artemis (T-Mobile Compact 3), but when I choose Google Maps as the map provider it downloads the tiles but just shows a white square with a black cross... the other three map providers work perfectly... has anyone else seen this behaviour?
I did install the .net compact framework (even though maps4dpa worked without it) but it made no difference?
Thanks

Hi. I'm Map4PDA for my 8125. I would like to save driving directions that I download, but when I shut down my device and restart the device, the driving directions are gone. Plus, I would like to save more than one driving direction. How does one go about doing this if one's GPRS has already been deactivated? By the way, I don't have a GPS device and I'm wanting to use the program for driving directions. Thanks.

I am running into the same issue. After a while the map will come up, but it takes forever. When I switch to any other provider than goole the maps show up immediatley. I am alos unable to move the map to a location via a city name, postal code etc. the app seems to be searching but it locks up and never returns to the map. Anyone else experiencing this?

Sorry to repost, but does anyone know how to save driving directions on Map4PDA when one doesn't have a data access plan? Is there a way to save multiple driving directions (coming and going)?

Who Uses GPS with GoogleMaps or Windows Live?

I have an HTC Mogul and am interested in a low-cost GPS solution. I am looking at the Holux M-1000, M-1200 and GPSlim 240, but want to know what my mapping/softeware options are without spending another $150 on a program like TomTom.
I understand Google and Windows Live have mapping software, and I currently have GoogleMaps on my PPC. Can anyone who uses these, or any other freeware share what the experience is like?
GoogleMaps' site says it has these features:
You Are Here (I know where I am, so this is no big deal) Where's the nearest... cup of coffee, late night pizza or last-minute bouquet? (OK - maybe this is useful)
Is there traffic up ahead? See it so you can avoid it. (I live in Vermont - there is NO traffic!)
How do I get there from where I am? Type your destination and away you go. (Not very detailed here, is it? So let's say your GPS/GMaps automatically tells you where you are. You type in where you want to go and get directions.
On a system like TomTom, I am assuming you are looking at a map that shows where you are, and says "Turn right in 100 ft. on Main Street" and shows a right-hand arrow. Once you have done this, the screen would say "Drive 6 miles" or something like that.
So, my question is, does Google do this? Does it in any way tell you what you need to do next based on you location and the directions to where you are going? Or does it just display your location as a point on a map, and it is up to you to figure out what and when to do? If so, is anyone using this and finding it useful, or a half-assed navigation solution?
Thanks,
BB
try google navigator 2.4 at pdafun.net it is not free though which is the same with google maps, you pay for network traffic.
hh
Looks Interesting
Have you used this? $60 is way cheaper than $150 for TomTom and I like the satellite view.
GPS...
I use a Holux 1000 and it works great with my Wizard with Live and Gmaps. Havn't tried a "turn-by-turn voice app" yet such as Tom-Tom.
Also, you need to give Beeline gps a try. Its a pretty cool app if you are into navigation.
Tried Google navigator (pdafun.net). IMO, seems a little buggy but I only tried it for about 10 minutes.
They will probably get the same love letter from Google that MGMaps did for content violations. ;-)
http://www.mgmaps.com/news.php?item=136
Try the Navibe GB735, it works great for me...
http://shop.treonauts.com/content/accessories/10-95--2230.htm
I have the Navibe GB735 Bluetooth GPS reciever that I got for my Treo 700wx during a trip to St. Louis, Chicago and Tulsa last September. I wrote a review of it here (http://forum.treonauts.com/palm-smartphones/treo-700w-wx/5919-gps-basics-help.html) under my other name (NavyStore). I still use it for work and just running around town with the Google Mobile Maps software.
Since I was upgraded to the xv6800 (Titan/Mogul) last week, I've used it twice and saw no changes. I have unlimited data w/ Verizon (but would love detailed instructions on how to get TomTom software I got to work on my phone) so it works fine as long as it holds a signal. Although, it does crash when VZW drops the data connection...
Hope these help some.
google maps does not do vocal turn by turn or a 3d view
it does do directions and what i use it for........ you can copy addresses from IE and paste them into google maps...
I use destinator 7 as my turn by turn GPS software and it is very good, but does not allow you to paste addresses into the fields... which mean i have to memorize or write the address down when i enter it...
i use both and can say, you can get by with only using google maps but it is not a turn by turn GPS software
I use my GPSlim 236 with Windows Live Search on a regular basis. Directions are a snap as long as you have unlimited data as well as a little patience in setting it up. I like the traffic feature as well here in Atlanta. You do get a little beep before a turn, but no voice. The view is not all that specatcular with the small screen of my Wizard but sufficient nevertheless. The best part is the SMS/email of directions and phone integration if you need to call a location.
As for Google Maps, I like it a little less, but it's not a bad program either. Personal preference.
I was using google maps for a while but then notices it would lose the GPS signal connection quickly. I tried all the different baud's and nothing worked. I did some searching on here and found that the problem seemed to be with google maps time out conditions. They are to short. So, I started using Live Search. I like it just as mich as google maps. It's actually a but easier to get to and from directions entered in for routing since you can browse to contacts for directions. The only issue I have now is that whenever I do a to and from directions route, Live Search always puts me at a previously entered destination. Does anyone know of a cache delete or something like that in Live Search? Anyone ever have this issue? I am using these apps. on an AT&T Tilt.
the Holux MX 1000 is a good deal if you dont mind the size ( well, as big as a zippo but a lil thicker ) . It hooks up quick ( I would say 10-20 sec , cold start ) and very stable. You can stick it into your key chain and you are ready to go.
For map, I prefer live search over Google map .
I've been using Live Search and love it when it works. The turn by turn is great. I wish it spoke, but it does at least beep. It saved me this past weekend lost in a strange city. Awesome. However, it seems to make my device (Tilt) unstable. I need to soft reset regularly after using it and I seem to lose my GPS signal easily. I don't know if this is my tilt, or the software, but i will freeze up for 3 minutes or so before it get moving again (which it does, most of the time!). As I said, when it works, it's awesome, as good as a full featured GPS solution. But I'm not sure it's wholly stable?
Yea, Live Search is really the way to go. It has much tighter integration with Windows Mobile and the "Speak your destination/search" is absolutely the best. Plus it has turn-by-turn unlike Google Maps. I have Tom Tom also on my phone, but when I'm searching for a location, Live Search wins for ease of use.
Have you tried nav4all??
Hi,
Just wondered if anyone has tried Nav4all on their devices?
What do you guys think?
Works great with my Tytn and blue tooth gps key-ring! (Freedom 2000)
Frogger
LiveSearch has no coverage for me (Belgium)...
On my TyTN (with Holux GPSlim 236), I have used
Smart2go: offline maps, nice 3D view, but no active navigation (doesn't seem to update gps position).
Google mobile: can determine rough location based on gsm cell, no active navigation
AmazeGPS: only have been able to test the alpha release, so it wasn't very stable; screenshots look interesting
Nav4All: good vocal directions, very basic but quite functional system
I have been searching for the free Navigon Mobile Navigation 6: the java version was free, but is no longer available on their site for download... (dunno if it still works though)
As my dataplan is on a different sim card, I mostly use my old phone (Nokia 6260) for data stuff (have it set up as external modem on my TyTN !). The upside is that I can use it as a standalone navigation; however I only managed to use Nav4All, and it seemed to loose its GPRS connection every now and then...
Haven't tested it enough on the TyTn to see if I get the same behaviour there.

Any suggestions for a good Map & Atlas program ?

Hi !
I'm kind of lost with these programs available for windows mobile and wich one fits with the htc s620 ...
I'm looking for a good program for maps and atlas. I don't want to program to connect to the internet to get the maps tought since i don't want my cell company to charge me for the data downloaded.
Anyone has an idea ?
No one has a program that they love for maps ? =)
google maps works good with it man..u can jus use wifi...free..has a mylocation service which is like gps and it gets pretty close..1000 meters maximum...
no one here really uses map/atlas stuff, besides google maps, because this phone doesnt have gps. i personally wont buy a gps receiver for it, because its old hardware...id rather put that money into a new phone that has gps..
Well, i'm not really wanting to buy a GPS for it ...
I just want something to look thru maps like microsoft maps (Im not sure of the name of their software) ?
I just dont wanna overload the data transfer on my cellphone in case my provider decide to charge me even if it's unlimited internet .... they charge me for each Kilobyte i load.
I was wondering if Tomtom will work on my htc without a GPS ?
I mean, would i be able to search for streets and see my way thru ?
Cause i'm planning on going to a week-end out of town so i'm preparing myself =D
I would recommend google maps, as it is free and mostly reliable for the most part.

I believe that you will need a GPS device (a bluetooth gps device to connect it to your phone).
Static Maps
I'm also looking for " static " maps. There must be some thing available that we can download. I'm not interested in GPS related maps only a static map of Toronto, Canada. Any help is appreciated.

No it has not been mention so I am going to let you all know that GOOGLE MAPS is the best.
Everyone over looks the obvious. Microsoft Live. Decent map program (and more) and its already on the device. Personally I use Google Maps and MapQuest Navigator, both with my b-speech bluetooth GPS. MS Live works just fine except the Ariel Maps are in black and white lol

GPS

Hi,
I have always wondered, do I need a data plan in order to use GPS on this device? This is my first device to have built-in GPS. For the past few days I have only been using it at home where there is a wifi connection and it picks up my location with no problems. GPRS is turned off on the device since I do not have a data plan (very expensive with Rogers). What I'm wondering is if I will need a constant data connection to use the map (Google maps) outside the house.
If you are using Google Maps you would need a data connection because the maps are stored on their server and therefore have to be loaded onto your device. If you don't want to use the data connection you'll have to download third party GPS maps onto your device such as Garmin Mobile XT, TomTom 7, or ZorroGPS. If you have the maps stored on your device there is no need to access any information over a data connection.
Thanks for the quick response....
Any recomendations?
If you just want driving directions, iGO8 is pretty good.
Thanks! Thats pretty much all I need!
I'll check it out and report back.
The website says "It only runs on the on the original SD card". I already have a 16GB SD card and I can't lose that to run GPS software.
Did I read wrong?
iGO8 runs on any SD (or even internal memory), Garmin, as they say, only runs on their microSD cards.
Hmm, weird thing is on Nav N Go website, iGO8 is not available in with Canadian maps. Is this correct or am I weird?
You can copy Garmin to your own SD card. It does take some hacking, but totally possible. Do a google search, there is a very useful thread on AT&T Wireless' forums.
After a some research, I finally bumped into CoPilot Live 8. Looks amazing!!! I already purchased it and will be testing it out over the weekend.
Thanks for all your suggestions.
How has the CoPilot worked out?
Does look good, and cheap... looks like you have to buy the software with each map though. Still, another licence I suppose!

In short, I'm happy with it. Then again, I don't have much to compare it with. The graphics are simple and clean, and the response and accuracy is pretty satisfactory. I'll see if I can get you some screenshots.
Me too
I used to be a diehard TomTom customer but have switched to CoPilot since getting the TouchPro2. I got cheesed off with TomTom's lack of recognition for their customers, tried the Copilot demo that HTC had on their site liked but live 8 and haven't had any problems with it, maps are clean and easy to understand, it's got some nice little features like lane directions when coming off a motorway (might be UK specific, not sure).
I've since converted all my favourites from TomTom and imported them into CoPilot as POI's so happier than a pig in the proverbial
Oh, how do you convert the favourites? I googled, but couldn't find much.
Is any one using IGuidance 2009 on TP2? I sent an email to support to check if it works on WVGA, and got the reply saying it will but the screen will not use full WVGA while using menus, but while driving, it will use full screen. That way it's working fine, but the TTS is not working, it just says "turn right on to" and does not say street name. It's working great on Fuze.
Is it working for anyone here?
Thanks

The maps are definitely a bit out of date -- I run CPL 8 on my Fuze (soon to upgrade to Tilt 2), and its maps don't include my parents' subdivision, which was built in 2006.
However, ALK has just rolled out their MapSure program -- just report map omissions/errors, and they promise to have new maps ready in 45 days.
CoPilot 8 bug
Has anyone noticed a bug in CoPilot Live 8 where if you select POI > Nearby > Restaurants, it gives you a list of hotels. And if you select hotels, it says "Restaurants" but with an empty list? I noticed this the first time I installed and even after upgrading my ROM to 6.5
I currently have TomTom it it get my by for local or short trips when I don't have my Garmin (stand alone unit). For long trips I try to avoid it as it's routing isn't as good as my Garmin. I think I will eventually buy Garmin XT for my Tilt 2.
TomTom allows for great user customization of menus and such, but I'm willing to give that up for better routing, especially on long trips.
I've considered the other GPS programs out there, but don't have any experience with them. So I think it eventualy going to be Garmin for me.

[Q] Sygic Aura for Android

I’m using Sygic Aura.
Have a few question. I guess they are pretty general:
Can I change voices in some way?
When I try and navigate to a contact, I have to update its position in the program. Is there a way to get it to understand the contact address right away?
When I’m using Sygic Aura and is logged in to their live service I see pictures of certain locations (they appear as icon sized pictures). Can I preview the in a larger format in some way?
Anyone here have a clue?
I'm having problems with mine. The software installs correctly, but cannot get a GPS fix, which keeps flicking on and off so that the map display constantly jumps between active coloured map and greyed out maps when the GPS signal disconnects. I'm using LeeDroid ROM. I have used the same trial on my Desire HD with no problems (also LeeDroid ROM).
Anyone have any ideas what might be the problem? No point buying the software if I can't get it to work...

That's interesting - it suggests the software is a bit flaky. I left it running whilst I went for a drive, and it did the same for about 40 minutes, and never got a full fix. Worked perfectly on the Desire though. Very strange. I won't be buying the full version at the moment that's for sure!
i got aura fully working on my DHD with fast gps fix
i have read some tips and tricks
install aura apk
reboot
download map
start aura and setup to your needs and likes
reboot
before using it to navigate, let it atleast fix once (stationary) completly
than you should have a fix almost directly(i have, even in my appartment)

BTW in my original post I should have said the trial works on my Desire, and not on the DHD. However, I have tried the above suggestion, and got the whole thing working. It's interesting that you can download the entire world in maps if you want, for a 7 day trial period. need to drive fast then!
I'm not happy with Sygic Aura at all.
First I really liked it and bought it but there are now 'bugs' introduced which renders this door to door gps software as useless.
Since ver2.1x you do not get arrival time (owww small bug according to the support team)
Last couple of weeks I noticed that in some big streets there is no way to insert a house number, euhm excuse me on a road that is about 10km long in the middle of Brussels, not so funny if you have professional contacts and you have to drive in that jungle staring at house numbers.
I just tried another couple of my other addresses and no house number, just unbelievable.
Tried my colleagues Navigon and tried iGO on my WinMo pda and house numbers everywhere, so software bug.
The support says that they are working on it and that it would just take weeks to solve the 'small bugs'.
At this moment I am so angry that I am going to claim my money back via paypal.
I can't even get it to run.
It was all ok for a while and then I flashed a new rom and it started force closing on me after I reinstalled it.
Can't really be bothered with it since the routing was gimp anyway.
I think Sygic have some work to do...
Latest version of Aura is still way to buggy for everyday use.
It has, in my opinion, the best looking UI of most (maybe all) SatNav apps for Android, but it has some serious flaws when it come to giving directions.
I have previously written a post on my views here:

I tried Aura on my DHD for some time. Did every tric I could find to get a stable GPS based position, but my location keeps jumping around or is lagging behind for sometimes 30 second.
Driving in the city this is unacceptable. I'm missing turns because Aura thinks I'm still 50-100 meters back.
I installed GPS Status and used it to force a cold boot for my GPS. Put it outside on my gardentable for 1 hour (10 min would have been more than sufficient, but I forgot all about it )
No improvement with jumpy and lagging position in Aura.
So now I removed Aura again and thats too bad. Sygic Aura is at this moment the nicest looking and most complete (incl. rather cheap traffic info) nav. system.
On the other hand, I would realy like IGOmyWay or IGO PRIMO on my DHD with full resolution. I threw out my WM (Touch HD) phone some weeks ago on which I had PRIMO including working TMC. That was fantastic, and fully configurable (sys.txt).
Let's see what the next months brings us.....
Sygic Aura on Desire HD
Hi everyone
I've just started using Aura on my Desire HD - impressed with the UI etc, but have a couple of niggles which people may be able to help with...
I've got the paid version 2.1, build R-20021, running on stock Desire HD, android 2.2
Changing voice - I've browsed the files using Astro and I have a female voice (amongst others)... how do i change the settings to use this voice file?
On my version, I can only turn on/off voice navigation, though i can change the different alert/warning sounds.
Re: speed camera/speed limit database... does anyone know how often this is updated? I'm based in UK and a local mainroad is indicating the incorrect speed limit (it changed from 60 -> 50 about 4years ago)...
Thanks in advance
Does someone recongnize the lagging behaviour of Aura as I describes 2 posts ago?

Me too. I drive with constant speed and the cursor freezes or de-accelerate then accelerates... then de-accelerate again... etc.. With navigon and Igo everything is fine! I have DHD with leddroid but It was the same with stock 1.72
I have exactly the same GPS-lagging problem with this program. Really odd though, as you would expect that the program gets the GPS info from android, just like any other navigation program (i.e. google maps).

I also noticed the gps lag and it's terrible! This renders the app useless wich is too bad as I also like the user interface alot... Im using the latest Aura v2.1.3

[Q] Navigation / Maps / Data

Hi all,
I'm going on holiday to South Africa and would like to use my DHD for navigation whilst I'm there however I don't want to incur any data charges if I need to download the maps. I've read on some places that you can pre download the maps somehow, how do I do this ?
Thanks,
Firstly, remember that you have to pay for navigation...
What you do is load Locations, then press "Show on Map" at the top.
Then press the menu button and select "Upgrade"
Then move to the Navigation tab (2nd one) and select South Africa and pay for however long you need it for. It should then download the map and everything it needs in advance.
You can download them from the phone, but there is a charge. IIRC around $6.99 for 3 month usage.

Thanks for all this information. I think I might be confusing myself, you have mentioned "Locations", I thought this was an app to find restaurants etc. however I've opened it now and noticed that you can navigate using it, what is the difference between this navigation software and the Google Maps Navigation software. I was under the impression the Google Maps Navigation software was free or am I getting them mixed up.
When I load "Locations" I see "Powered by Route 66" everywhere ?
Google maps is free, but downloads the maps as you go - therefore, data costs would be incurred.
Locations is HTC's own navigation app, which pre-loads your maps but you have to pay for the navigation (though regular maps are free).

You have to pay for voice navigation, although you could download the maps before you leave and get a short term subscription eg one month for cheap.
You can get directions without voice free though. Just gotta download the maps.

Directions, yes, but not turn by turn navigation. Might as well print directions off from full Google maps...

Except if you do that you wont get a real time updating display showing your current location, and the directions won't update themselves when you make a wrong turn.
So can not we use any navigation apps in a different country to guide us as free with Android liek TomTom or IGO My Way (as I am using free in Iphone and only drains GPS data no romaing)?

As I understand it, the gps navigation works fine without data connection. You just should download the maps for the location your going to beforehand (or at a free wifi) so you don't get data charges. The part you pay for in the navigation app is the voice guide, wich IMO is pretty useless.

That is exactly what I wanted to know. When I get to South Africa I'm going to want to pull my sim card out of my phone to avoid been charged for any accidental data that might be downloaded as when I'm roaming in South Africa T-Mobile charges £7.50 a MB !!!!!! Question is will the navigation work without the sim card, I would like to think that it will only require GPS.
I'm going to do some testing here before I go, I will download the maps then pull the sim card out and see if it works.
MarkieSA, let us know the test results for Locations.

Isn't that the whole point of satnav? You're not just paying for the voice...you're paying for the turn by turn navigation. Without it you're just looking at a map. There's no directions (other than the list, which is hard (and illegal) to read when driving).

I'm not in your league gents but using your build on HD2. I tried out this new Locations app and noticed it can build a route but the current location did not move along with my drive. I havent bought/paid for anything yet. I'm assuming once I do then the recalculation and the pointer will move with current location. Need to know cause DHD is arriving in the next few days
I'd leave your SIM installed and use a widget to disable the APN. I use Curvefish widgets.
For what it's worth, I recently took my car on the ferry from the UK to Ireland, so decided to use the pre-loaded Ireland maps to navigate my way to my destination.
I found that Locations worked ok, once it had a GPS lock, but found it difficult to find the perfect zoom level to look ahead to upcoming turns, while still seeing where I was. Basically I was looking down on myself on a map, whilst trying to follow the route drawn out on the map. It was nowhere near as using Google navigation with data, but it was adequate. I would have found it a lot easier if I had someone else in the car yelling out directions, as I was concentrating enough driving in the dark with the rain lashing down!
P.S. You don't need to worry about data charges while you're away, just make sure data roaming isn't selected in your Wireless and Network settings.

Right then I'm back from my holiday and this is what happened. Before I went on holiday I pre downloaded the South African maps using HTC locations and bought navigation for 30 days in South Africa.
When I got to South Africa I took out my T-Mobile sim card and inserted a local operators sim card with no data plan, when I fired up HTC locations and went to navigation it said to me that my maps were not up to date and it had to download the latest maps As I had a sim card in that had no data plans it did not work. After a few days I was in a WiFi hotspot and thought I would try and get this working again, I downloaded all the updated map data etc however after that the phone struggled to pin point my location. I tried again a few times after this then gave up.
