Finally took the plunge and got myself the Orbit
This is my first non-Palmos pda/phone! My last phone was the Treo 650.
Can anyone suggest where I can get a good quality screen protector for the Orbit available in the UK?
- Which 'Killer apps' do I need to get?. In particular looking for apps that improve one handed operations. Mainly going to be using the PIM applications, sms texting and ebook reading & GPS of course!
- Any Silicone cases available yet?
TIA
Must have application for onehanders is a small utility called AE Button Plus at http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php. This allows you to map any number of system functions and applications to buttons (each button can acquire 3 more functions by double, triple and long press). For instance, I have mapped the mouse courser to a double click of a button. I have also mapped my ok button so that it really closes applications on a long press.
I know I sound like a sales rep but I am just a appreciative user.
Guys, this page is not complete yet, but it should be made so:

Although you'll probably find some UK seller, I've previously purchased from the following two websites. Both are reliable. No news about silicone cases, still on the lookout for them.

Also, software...SPB PocketPlus and SPB Diary are well worth the money.

Resco Explorer 2005 for Pocket PC (v5.42)
Is this the right version for the HTC P3300 to get?
Just want to know before I end up getting the wrong one.
I use exactly that version, works great!
All good ideas, and i would certianly recommend SPB Pocket+ and SPB Diary but i would err on the side of caution and get a solid case if possible.
After some little chav twat barged past me in the street and knocked my Orbit out of my hand, I can't help wondering if one of the aluminium cases might have saved some of the damage done when the car ran over it!! the extra money for the extra protection they can give these very expensive phones is worth it.
I never did manage to catch him to give him a damn good kicking!

I bought an Aluminium case that fits on the belt it swivels, but three times the case has caught on something and opened, launching my Qtek 9100 on to concrete, luckily only a few minor scratches.. they ought to have some form of latch system to prevent accidental openings. If anyone sees one with a latch system then please advise...
If you chaps want a bomb proof case for your Artemis have a look at the Otter box range, excellent for protection, but not too practical when in the city (great for fell walking though) and waterproof - mine fits very nice inside the 1900 style case - Mike
rhedgehog - I don't think that the aluminum case would have saved your phone from the car.
martia - I am sure a quick trip to a hardware or jewelry store would be able to find a practical solution as in putting a latch on the case so it doesn't open up unexpectedly.
mikealder - what is the exact model that you are using so others can get the same one?

see this link for more details http://www.otterbox.com/products/pda_cases/1900/ As I say its more for out walking/ climbing etc. You would get strange looks using the Arte in one of these in the city centre - and you would need a bluetooth headset to use the phone (but thats easy) - Mike
Hi patel989,
Where did you get those games from as I really want a few of them (Jazz Jackrabbit etc)
So as not to hi-jack the post Resco explorer, keyboard, picture viewer are great programs and I could not do without Pocket breeze.

OMG Thanks Do you also get a weird message when starting winap on Windows Mobile 5 though???

Keypad
I'm looking for a mobile phone style keypad so I can enter SMS messages from the virtual keyboard.
The phone dialer is great, but you can't send SMS messages like that.
Has anyone seen any software that can do that?
Related
Cant see any problems with it yet.
Slide down keyboard is stiff and secure, no gaps or loose
Screen has no yellow tinge
wifi works, but signal is low.
after reading some of the posts here in the days before my XDAIIs arrived
i was dredding it realy.
the problems i was reading made me feal like sending it back in return post.
BUT
as was said in one or two other posts, it looks like O2 have got the good stock
the wifi problem looks like its here, but saying that it works all round my house and threw walls here, so im happy there.
the signal isnt as strong as my laptop shows.
however driveing down the road, it picks up all sorts of wifi signals.
the volume of the outgoing voice sounds ok.
i mean ive asked a few callers and they say i sound fine.
i use the GPS mouse with a cable that splits to the car ciggy lighter
it was a worry i had (from reading posts here) that it wouldnt fit.
back when i got the gps mouse there wasnt a cable for my XDAII so i took a chance and got the one for the XDA,
it woked fine on my XDAII charging and working the GPS mouse.
so.....
today i tryed the XDAIIs AND IT WORKED !!!
i wish i could remember the name of the mouse, i will look tomorrow for you guys.
but GPS WIRED MOUSE/CHARGER for XDA works on the XDAII and XDAIIS
(without forceing the plug in)
if i find any major problems i will post here in this thred..
I'm on my 3rd O2 xdaIIs and it's a good one ( stiff keyboard/no gaps/no yellow ) all working and I'VE DROPPED IT. Chipped some of the paint of down the left hand side near the camera/record/volume buttons. gutted.
xda iis is it a good buy?
I'm looking into getting the xda iis after january and looking for all the pros and cons. have read it has a bad quality screen unlike the xda ii or iii,...I'm not up to date on things nor do I know a great deal on technology, (only what looks good)...but I don't like to have to use a stylus and have fairly big hands.. I'm sure you have seen about all the flaws and problems relating to this phone/pda...but what do you think first hand, now after having and using it yourself? And also if I might ask, does it meet your standards or live up to your expectations...? Any comments or ideas? I personally don't know whether to look forward to it, or to wait for something else. :?
If you don't like using a stylus, I'm curious as to why you would want a Pocket PC. Even with the thumb keyboard, you need to use the stylus most of the time. Would a Nokia 9500 not suit you better?
As for big hands, my glove size is 12 (or XXXL) and I have little problem with the keyboard on the XDAIIs.
There are quite a few negative comments on here regarding the IIs, but they seem to be based on earlier units, suggesting there were problems with the first batch. My IIs seemed to be part of a later batch and has no physical problems (keyboard is nice and tight, no yellow tint unless I view from a crazy angle, wifi works really well) though the bluetooth software is still dodgy (waiting on O2 to test and release the patch) and there are a few really minor bugs that will be ironed out.
But if you don't want to use a stylus, I would think long and hard about getting a Pocket PC. They are designed to be used with a stylus. The keyboard is really there to augment the normal, pen-based input; not to replace it.
stylus for blue angel
It's not that I dislike the stylus, I just don't want to use it all the time and don't want it to be the only option as on the xda II. I don't mind it for applications and bits, but not too much word input. It puts me off a bit. I do like the keyboard option on the II s, as I have had a look and feel of the II s and was highly impressed by what I saw. It definately suits me (as long as it is a good one and not full of bugs)...as far as nokia....I have never liked any of them... just personal prefs really. I've been wanting a pocket pc as I find they are really interesting and you can do a lot with them, however I'm a bit slow when it comes to knowing what's what when it comes to things like this. Are you happy with yours?
Just got mine, the screen seems ok no yellowish color, havent had chance to play with the Wifi yet.
The keyboards a different story like, seems really loose and really doing my head in, you would think it would lock in quite tight like my samsung e800
How have you gone about getting 02 to swap yours?
Are you guys basically reporting that you have NO yellow on your screen?? Unless I look straight on my pda2k has a substantial yellowing. It's starting to bug me...
Hi,
My wife's dash took a nice jump into a swiming pool over the weekend. Hoping that after it dried out it will come back to life... it hasn't... and it may never will.
Since we are long past the 1 yr. contract with T-Mobile, we are think about renewing the contract, however the big question is should we get the dash, the wing or the shadow.
So... I am open for reasons to make a final decision.
TIA...

Dash because it is tiny and has qwerty. Shadow looks cool....no Querty. There is a shadow 2 coming out very shortly. Saw pictures doesn't look as nice as the first but they are just spy photos and they don't say whether it has a qwerty or just a dialpad like ole one. Wing is kinda bulky. I dunno. I go with dash or wait for something as great as dash but newer. The dash with WM 6.1 and opera mini is like the perfect device. For cheap
I love my dash. For it's size, it packs alot of features. I just flashed to Ricky's rom because I was considering getting a Wing myself. As mentioned before the Wing is rather bulky and mind you I also own a Blackberry 8800. So cast my vote for the Dash. The Dash's only flaw is it's battery life. (Although I am a heavy user)
get the wing. that **** is tight as hell. i would of got it instead of the dash but i was too poor
Is the Wing and the Shawdow having update problems? I just visited Windows Mobile site and the only one with a 6.1 update is the Dash. Is this correct? Maybe I am not seeing the whole story.
wing sux. shadow is a slider and slider sux. dash is slow on WM6 but when u upgrade to 6.1 its all gravy.
Get an unlocked Pantech Duo? Ooh, I bet I wasn't supposed to say that here!

This is the second instance I've seen of someone seeing the Dash mentioned on Microsoft's website concerning a 6.1 update! I literally go to the Windows Mobile site EVERYDAY and check for updates for the Dash, to no avail. What is the URL to the EXACT page where it discusses the 6.1 update for the Dash???

woah i wouldnt go as far to say sliders suck. maybe the shadow slide sucks but ive used several sliders that were pretty solid.
i would go with the dash. its a pretty small phone for the features it has, the full qwerty keyboard, and a jogger strip. i mean come on. i used to have a mda and got rid of it cause it was bulky as hell, i know the wing looks a little slimmer but still bulky.
I have all three, and honestly it depends on your requirements.
Dash: Excellent all around smartphone, nice loud speaker, bright screen, very fast with 6.1, slim, decent battery life, qwerty!
Wing: The ultimate toy, cheap touchscreen pda phone, looks nice, has everything but 3G and GPS, but is also bulky and inconvenient to use in the car or while multitasking.
Shadow: It looked really cool but turned out to be super impractical to use, no qwerty, terrible battery, meh body color choices, not much of a following, but the home screen rocks.
Ultimately the Excalibur (Dash) with Rick's rom wins hands down.
Hope this helps.
I would recommend the dash.

Dude I don't think this is right subforum - all have have Dash, and most of us love dash .
This is like you enter Opera forum and ask "Opera, Firefox, or Internet Explorer" .
I love my Dash. My Dash is my second wife .
Not so expensive, fast WM6.1, all basic ****s you need - Phone, SMS, Calendar, E-mail, Opera support, many many games, apps, pretty tinny design, QWERTY keyboard, mp3/mp4 functionalaty, ultra bright clear screen, loud speaker, not slider , Wi-Fi support.
All you need is to pay attention and don't hit this phone to floor - you will break your screen, and buy second battery, because battery life is about 8-10 mounths.
And some cool extra - this subforum with ultra heavy support - this is really really important - believe me.

No you wouldn't like a cavalier. A ****load of people have the dash or it's cousins. There are a ton of people hacking it and releasing stuff like wm6.1 betas and custom roms. The Cavalier not so much.
Dash Wins Hands Down
Kind of an old thread but still a relevant topic; the Wing is too slow; I am used to the 8525, and frankly the wing is really slow. By the way, I also do not like the tilt. Yes I have owned it and I sold it. I have had the dash quite a while, and I just bought a Shadow.
Overall, if I could only own one, it would be the Dash. Without question is the best all around device.
Only thing is if I rode the bus often, then the 8525 would be nice to have in that case. Because you have both hands to surf
Wing sucked IMHO. I tried it at t-mo store. TOo slow...if you want a PPC get a used 8525 ($150-$200).
Dash...Dash...Dash...
Dash All The Way!!!!
went to the tmobile store and played with a shadow, colors suck, and it feels fragile as hell. i feel that if i were to drop it, it would shatter into a million little pieces. havent played with a wing, but im the proud owner of my dash. which i drop at least 2 times a day... work sucks
ALL IN ALL ITS THE DASH ALL THE WAY
p.s. got mine for 50 bucks
50 with a 2 yr. contract??

Verizon TP2
Should be here around 12 maybe 3.
I've heard that GPS is slow to lock is there any way to fix this?
I advise you to put on the shipped screen protector... The screen is really very sensitive to scratches. I've had mine for 1 week now. I screwed up with the screen protector so I didn't put it... and I already have 3 tiny scratches... which drives me really crazy.
Then buy a belt case because the one shipped with the TP2 cannot be attached to the belt... it's annoying if you often receive calls.
You then follow all the good instructions in Applications to install...
and you should be happy
Have fun, it's a fantastic piece of hardware
VZW advice
Ignore the advice about the shipped screen protector. The VZW version doesn't come with a screen protector or a belt clip. The screen is VERY scratch prone though so I would invest in an invisishield case or something.
As far as the GPS:
Just make sure you have your phone set to "Location on" and not Just "911 emergency". Then use quickGPS, which comes shipped on the phone, to increase the speed of locating sats. After that you should be good. I use Google Maps all the time and it works great.
There are a number of registry tweaks you'll need to make in order to lower the ridiculous memory drainage. When I first got my phone it would just stay around 75%-80% of memory used. I made registry tweaks to disable push internet and reduce shared memory (or something like that) to 0. I can't remember exactly what tweaks I made for the memory and I'm too lazy to search again, but between xda and ppcgeeks you should be able to find them fairly easily. Just search "touch pro 2 memory leak". Also make sure you always close Opera using "menu -> exit". Otherwise the program will remain open and you can't close it using the task manager.

Sorry, didn't know this about VZW version....
Buy a good screen protector (I have bought this one at Martin Fields)
I have played around with GPS tweaks and it's working really better... but not perfectly yet.
I'm surprised by all the difference between stock roms. Mine is only using 42 % of RAM when starting and barely going up to 52/55% with all applications running including TomTom and BB Connect running permanently.
So have fun with GPS once you have tweaked everything.
So I recently purchased a 3D printer for my small business. I'd love to print some custom cases for the captivate. My printer supports printing plastics, rubbers, and other proprietary materials. I am not the best CAD designer, but if someone can provide a CAD file or .stl file for the Captivate I could print custom cases for cheap designed by our community.

Might be able to help you out with that. My best friend who goes to University of Illinois is taking a class where he has to make cad files of objects he owns. He just did his iPhone and it looked great. I'll ask him if he has time to make one of our phone.
Are you wanting cad renderings of the phone itself?? My brother does cad design for some big company in Washington. Ill see what's up.

I actually could create one in CAD, but I just don't have the program anymore...
I can do a model for you but depends on what detail you want. If you just want a case printed, its really easy as all you need is external dimensions, gradual change of shape, button placements and so on. I've got a captivate so can base it off that.
Might require some fine tuning but should be easy . All youd have to do is show me photos of issues.
PM me if you dont find anyone else in about two weeks (currently bogged down with work)

has any progress been made? this seems interesting
Is it a six axis printer, if not I don't see it working too well? I could do a mock up for you. Three reason I ask about the axis is getting the inside material out. Most 3d printers can do the outside with no problem, its rotating the bit on its own axis to remove inside that you start needing a cnc machine for. Without rotating the bit, you would left with a case that you can just push the phone in and out of, not a surround fit like the body glove case for example.
Edit, you could use a mushroom style bit though on a standard machine. Idk never worked on a3d printer. Just large scale cnc and cad/cam work.

I am willing to send somebody 10 bucks for a good 3D diagram of the captivate exterior.

Seems like you've never worked with a "inkjet printer" . It creates a part by putting down layers of a liquid binder in powder. I've created a bunch of complex (and high precision) parts in my school lab. You just have to be really careful in removing it from the printing area for curing.
There is also another method that uses polymer or wax-ish material that goes through pretty much the same process (layer by layer).
well, no updates yet ... still not sure how far is everyone on this project ..
lets get going on it everyone !!!
i just got the phone last night from the att store ..
what i can do on my part would be getting exact dim. on the phone by using a Pharo arm machine that i have at my job. and once i have that i'll keep everyone updated, then we move on to the cad Designing ..
lets do it
You got a 3D printer, now what you need is a 3D scanner!!
I have ProE and Autocad at home. But I spend 50-60 hrs a week staring at a computer at work, last thing I want to do when I get home is more computer work. but if I get some free time in the next couple weeks, I'll build a model of the Captivate.

Oh haha I was thinking more of a mini mill. How thick are the layers? Sites any smoothing need to be done afterwards?
From a phone on an app
I suppose that varies from machine to machine and the powder used. The one at my school seems like it can produce layers about of about 1/64" thick. As long as you let it sit for enough hours for the binder to set, you can remove it and clear off excess powder with a brush and other tools then use a cure to strengthen it (seems like industrial super glue).
Then if thats the case, wouldn't it be easier to get the measurements from a case like the bg one, take a 64th off all surfaces. That way the hardener will have room to lay on top.

Is there a Handwriting app for the Archos 70 IT yet?
I'd like to be able to write and have my handwriting translated into type-written text.
There is an app called "Writepad" but it costs $10 - reviews make it sound pretty good and I've been thinking of buying it to give it a try but I've been looking for a fine (or finer than average) stylus first. I tried one of those fat point styli and really didn't like it for many reasons. It was the Targus brand...but anyway, I digress...
So yeah, writepad....
I am in the same boat. I have tried just about every writing app they have out now, from white boards to conversion apps. To be honest this is what I dislike about the 70 the most. I have a SWEET evernote app on my windows 6.5 TP2 that takes great notes.... and the 70 doesn't
What happens most of the time is lag between when I take my finger or stylus off the screen an put it down again. I hope once we can root that we can run a lag fix... but we shall see.
I bought the writepad app and did not have success with it. It doesn't always pick up what you write on the screen with your finger. The hard stylus does not get any recognition. I picked up a brush stylus but was not any better.
I've used calligrapher/transcriber on wm phones for over 10 years, and was hoping for a similar experience but no such luck.
Swype has been the best alternative. But you still have to look at the screen when using it.

Another option would be Graffiti for Android which is basically the old PalmOS writing input style. Has a slight learning curve to it, but otherwise fast. That one is only 2.99 and rumored to have a free ad-based version I can't find in the market on my Epic or Archos...but it shows up in AppBrain... :-/
