glitchy when using slide bar - P3300, MDA Compact III General

hi all
my mda compact iii seems a bit glitchy when sliding the side bar on pages that are too big to display. rather than sliding the contents of the screen smoothly like my mda pro did, it skips up and down a bit making it impossible to read when you are scrolling down a web page for example. only workaround is to jab at the up / down buttons at either end of the slide bar. is this common to all mda c iii's or do you think mine might be faulty?
cheers
si

my orbit had the same problem, glitchy when using the side bar. Not all the time, but if you have a long page, then sliding it up and down is smooth to start with, but then the glitch starts happening. I don't think its the machine, but more like the OS.
I changed my orbit and now using the trinity. The trinity does have a quicker CPU, and is quicker for general operations. Not that I was too bothered with the speed of the Orbit, because it was good enough for general usage.

thanks hongsit
that's put my mind at rest. it seems strange that my mda pro felt much much slower at everything else even though in theory it has a faster processor, but it was really smooth at handling its vga screen draws. anyway, the artemis is a real step up in every way (except scrolling!!)
cheers
si

also glitchy scrolling
Hi...
i'm having the same problem scrolling is glitchy.. but interestingly only in the lower half of the screen. Already recalibrated the screen but didn't solve the problem.
What is your solution, apart from using the scroll up and scroll down buttons. Because i really liked to hold the stick on the scroll bar while reading websites...
Maybe i should ask O2 if they replace/fix it.
cheers
Armin
PS.: it's also annoying while playing solitaire

artemis user experience SPB mobile shell

Are there any artemis users that run this application??
What are your experiences (especially when it comes to stability)?
Had it on trial for about 10 days
Looks great, and so far no stability issues at all
I love the front screen
I've loved Mobile Shell. But I found I was having to reset about three or four times a day. I uninstalled it and everything went back to normal.
This was with both the O2 XDA Orbit rom and the HTC P3300 rom.
Hi,
I've been using it for almost a week now. no problems at all.
Now screens is just great. everything that you need on one screen with a nice layout. just try it out and you w'll see.
PS. using it on XDA Orbit (orrigenal rom).
I've been using it for 2 weeks now without any problem. Its user interface and functionality are brilliant.
Other users have reported battery leaks with their other PDA devices, but so far I don't have this problem with my O2 Orbit. It's been told that this problem is device-specific incompability. Hopefully it's not a problem for the Orbit.
BUSPBP
Have been using it for few weeks.
Functionality wise, I'd say it is OK, but the lovely Now screen is simply awesome. Also it saves space on Today screen by encompasing few ones i had before separately. Don't use the menu they have as it defaults to launching default applications that come with WM5. I wish in future versions those can be custumized, then it will be simply awesome ... a must must have. Doesn't eat system resources .... a neat app.
Problems - none at all on P3300 with PDAMobiz Powermap 1.1.2 ROM.
I've been using it until my stupid flash accident. After recovery I decided not to install it again. In general the app is very good. I loved the Now screen but 'finger menu' used to drive me crazy. Brilliant idea but wased. I couldn'd understand (or been stupid not being able to find) that there is no customizations of the items locations. Once an item used then it changed its position and instead of speeding access I've been stairing at the screen not seeing where did the f...g app go. I guess it supposed to organise the layout by the frequency of usage but the result was unacceptable for me.
That is my expirience. There is no better way than to try it.
I've had this one on for 2 weeks now and am finding it doesn't play nicely with Wisbar advance 2? After I take a call and it goes back to the today screen or now screen, I lose the wisbar top bar with the buttons on and have to close and restart wisbar to get them back... Anyone else running this combination of software and having the same problem ??
Would love to have a solution to this cos I cant do without either of them to be honest. They're both very cool apps
I've been using it for more than 2 weeks. Like it very much. Only one problem found: sometimes the Battery tab of the Today applet (that contains the recently used programs' icons too) losts all icons and becomes empty. Only soft reset helps.
Since it rarely happens, I can live with it and don't want to get rid of this great app.
And yes: I strongly hope that there will be som customization possibility in the next version of the app. For example I use Spb Imageer for handling, editing pictures, and it is an app from the SAME FIRM, but I cannot put it into the Multimedia section of the Spb menu...

Memory Map and HD

Hi all,
My HD arrives tomorrow, on contract, . Has anyone tried and got Memory Map to work on this? I cannot see it on the list working or otherwise
This is going to replace my Toshiba G900 and my Dell Axim 51v and Holox GPS.
I have a 5day cooling off period with the contract The Terms and conditions of Orange probably mean i will not be able to open the box so some advice would be great.
TIA
Paul
From my understanding the program should scale it up, i know it works fine with VGA screens and from the tech support guys that make it i get the feeling it not hard coded to work at any given screen res, in their words it will fill the screen of the device in question.
The nature of the program wouldnt make any difference to the map displayed, it would just show more of it.
So, its a slightly educated guess but id bet it will work fine, at least in portrate mode.
Memory Map
Hi all,
pleased to say memory map does work. Just set it nmea and com02 and away it went.
The icons are a little blurred but work, though the maps are perfect.

Memory Map works for me, but when I try to use the GPS, it says "License not valid for GPS Plot" even though it is a perfectly good licence. Anyone seen this message?
Is Memory Map the only Ordinance Survey mapping software available now for the Pocket PC?

Yes - Anquet 6.2.7 Beta...
I'm currently testing the Beta of Anquet 6.2.7 http://www.anquet.co.uk/pocket-anquet.htm, and it works great!
(I don't know the release date of the full version, but it's good.)
Dan./
It's not 100% compatible with the WVGA screen resolution. The bottom of the map can become corrupted if you scroll the map.
Also, if you hide the toolbar then this part of the screen becomes corrupted.
With regard to licensing, the latest version of MM has changed to an online licence mechanism which may be the problem with GPS.

That looks extremely easy to use.
It's just a shame like MM purchasing of maps is so expensive.

Touch HD - Cannot open Memory Map map files over 100MB
I have been using Memory Map's Pocket Navigator on numerous HTC devices without a problem, but for some reason I cannot open map files on my HTC Touch HD that are over 100MB in size. This is strange because I just managed to open a map on my Advantage that is over 250MB. I am wondering if this has to do with the vastly improved memory capacity on the Touch HD? It so happens that when I check available program memory it shows 115MB or so. Does the Touch HD manage large files in memory differently than previous HTC devices? The maximum map size in Pocket Navigator is 400MB. Can anyone think of a way around this?
I will post a similar question on the general forum since I think it is a general configuration issue rather than a Memory Map issue.
I have exactly the same problem. I have had to cut London up into several bits!
Update from Memory Map Support on File Size Problem
Here is what Memory Map support have said about this:
"There is nothing we can do to fix this I am afraid. The error seems evident to varying degrees on all Windows Mobile 6.1 PDA devices."
My previous devices were WM6.0, so that is probably why I did not face this problem. I would be very interested to know if anyone has figured out a way to solve this.
Mine reads them Ok but only for a short while - maybe 2 or 3 openings then needs a soft reset.
This was not that easy on top of Great Knoutberry Hill in a blizzard last week!
Had to rely on 1000year old technology.
Same problem for me. Previously used on a Touch and an Atom Life without problem, but both WM 6.0 devices. On HD wound that a 120MB file would sometimes open but not reliably. Have now made all maps under 100MB and so far no probs. Bit iof a pain really, especially as it seems to work really well in other respects. Very pleased with how quick the onboard gps gets a fix, and seems accurate.
Other thing I've noticed is that the HD doesn't track the route when put into standby. Seems to restart and the re-establish gps when switched back on. Both the original Touch and the Atom Life continued tracking when in standby. Guess it might help battery life though. Need to do more testing
This mm map size issue is not new. It has intermittently affected my 2750 under WM5 (not WM2003SE incidentally), TyTN and TyTNII. Pre WM5 it worked fine with all map sizes ... accepting that pre WM5 ... even on the 2750 you could only have 2 x 4GB ... so you couldn't have a single map of the UK.
I ended up using the PC app to break the UK into circa 25 regions that made sense to me, keeping each region (largest map 173M) and it works fine most of the time. If you have a bunch of things running at the same time the odd map may fail to open ... the only option is to shut all other apps down or soft reset. It is not actually getting close to running out of program memory ... it is something about the way MM5 works with the WM5 and later persistant memory model and Memory Map have been aware of the problem since early WM5 days. It is frustrating but I don't see it going away anytime soon.
I regularly have memory map in the foreground with co pilot 6 in the background giving audio directions ... maps are far cooler than street nav ones. This works fine with map sizes below 180M.
On different devices this sensitivity may vary but will alway be there ... but you won't get a single map of the UK ... the 25 I mentioned take up 5.7GB .... working on any device until MM sort out the issue. I last spoke to the guys in Aldermaston about 18 months ago and they clearly knew about the issue but it didn't seem like a priority.
I'm happy to send the outline map for MM5 that will enable you to export the 25 sub 180M maps to the PDA.

The only update to Memory-Map in a long time has been the addition of a tighter licensing system. Priorities are obviously elsewhere. I've lost faith with Memory-Map. They have had a vast amount of my money in the past and don't seem to be doing anything to help me get the software working properly on newer, better hardware.
The very useful forum from their co.uk website has also disappeared and shows no sign of reappearing. I really don't think they actually care about their customers anymore and when companies get like that it is time to look elsewhere. Sorry Memory-Map, you've lost a big fan and probably many others to follow. (/rant)
Zooming In
I too found that moving to the Touch HD required me to reduce the size of the maps still further from the ones I used on my TyTn II. I have now split each map into counties and each file is below 60M each. Each area now opens fine without any problem.
The only thing I have noticed, other than the zoom in/out buttons looking strange, is that I can't zoom in as much as I could on the TyTn II. The lowest zoom I can get is when the scale shows 0.5 miles at the bottom. Changing the screen to landscape with Gsen makes no difference. I know I could zoom in one more setting on the TyTn II. Has anyone had the same problem or know a solution?
I would be interested in this too. I am using Pocket A-Z on mine but although it fits full screen the maps look low quality. I would be interested if memory map fares better
It seems there is an optimum zoom level. Wierd, like a full size LCD. If you are on a zoom level above or below the optimum the quality is poor. (Or more poor than I'm used to!) This was the one app I really wanted the Touch HD for, and I'm thoroughly disappointed so far. Need some fixes for this pronto.
Paul,
I have the Full GB version of MM OS 1:50k. I would like to take you up on the offer of the outline map to create the 25 submaps. (I'm not too sure how this works. I'm assuming that the outline shows where to 'cut' and then download that displayed area to the HD?)
(I agree that this is a pain. On my older Pocket PC I could open maps of 250 megs without any problem. I bought a 16 gig card to get all the maps on to my HD and now find this problem.)

[IDEA - REQ] D-Pad and VGA-fix in one program

My idea is to make a program that acts like WVGA-fix, that is, reducing the display area ( by 160 pixels in height) in order to make VGA applications compatible AND, at the same time, using the space gained at the bottom for a virtual D-Pad.
That would make many 3D games compatible and playable (becuase of the D-Pad) but also applications like Realcalculator or the SPB suite.
Does anyone want to do this? I'd donate at least 20 bucks and I guess there are lots of other people who would appreciate a solution like this.
Nice idea, but what's the point in the WVGA screen then? Might as well get a Diamond!
also thought about that. tgere is someone working on it. search for the d-pad sip thread.
the idea is to program an emulator, wich opens applications in a 640x480px Frame this way its simulates a VGA screen. the 160px left can be used for virtual D-Pad. when pressing a button on the virtual D-Pad, the direction has to be send to the frame - to the application / game.

If you want to go as far as having an on screen virtual keypad with the OS running at a lower resolution to accommodate it, I imagine this would need to be done through a replacement screen driver much like NYDITOT. If you've ever used NVD, you should know what I mean. They use a generic replacement for the screen/display/keyboard driver that then allows the OS display to be run at any resolution and then scrolled.
But since it replaces the entire screen driver (ddi.dll) with it's own generic version, this method is also a performance hit for more graphical apps like games. If someone can figure out something better and easier, go for it. I imagine you would only need to hack with the touch driver if you wanted an invisible on-screen dpad or something.
And it should look like this http://upload.csrune.com/files/dpadsip669.PNG ;-)
It's just another keyboard...
Hello, sorry to unburry this topic, but I consider the concept is of premium importance.
First of all, I think it should have nothing to do with resizing the screen, as it would just complicate the process and slow down the programs...
Games and other software using the HD's missing pad are generally already VGA (if not QVGA) sized (considering recent WVGA games can use the touchscreen or the accelerometer), so they already display black unused sections on the screen (and by the way, a lot of useful apps, such as WVGAFix or Hou Ming's Force Hires already manage the lost margin and/or resize QVGA to VGA).
So it should only be about using this otherwise spilled and already existing dead zone to display a pad.
There are tons of applications for such a pad, and not only games !
Just browsing through directories can just be so painful without a pad, as Windows Mobile massively relies on its presence.
For instance, you have nice thumbnails showing when you parse pictures, but they are rendered useless, as you can't browse through them ! As soon as you select the next one with stylus or finger, it pops opened (well, popping isn't really the appropriate word, if you consider how slow the process is )
Then the best way to browse a directory, is to open the SIP keyboard, but of course, not the Microsoft one, as it has no arrow keys (remember : Windows assumes a pad is present) : you have to open this nice, but oversized HTC one, you know, the one that has arrows, but no Ctrl key, and therefore is unable to copy and paste !...
As keyboard arrows do work in any situation, I really, really think we all lack a simple 4 direction pad (plus "action" button, the other four classical buttons being physically present, phew) that would take no room on the screen, and help us browsing files and menus, or playing games.
The virtual pad should be available in the keyboards and other input devices list, exactly the same way the others are.
Ideally, we could imagine a tiny one that would overlap the central button and take no room on the screen, but just occupy about half an inch in the center of the lower bar, plus the usual SIP input choice arrow, in order we can still change keyboards at will.
For older VGA ou QVGA games, a larger and more finger friendly version could be imagined, either just a thick line of buttons, or why not, a larger pad, as shown on Wolfenzi's nice picture.
Just consider that a lot of virtual keyboards are available, so It doesn't seem to be something impossible to do !
It would be just another keyboard, just having only 5 keys, and nothing else !!!
I actually really can't figure out why nobody seems to be interested by such a simple yet useful idea...
Oh, and as Maati, I'm ready to remunerate anyone who'd do the effort, too.

Well, not as I see it, and support the need for such a utility.
This utility would allow older (no longer actively supported?) applications what were design for VGA and control (only!) thru the D-pad, to still work.
Of course, new applications will be written to fully use WVGA, and have control thru means other than the D-pad.

hail to this simple, yet working solution.
and even include gestueres perhaps like windows and resco keyboard has.
why is it that we dont have this yet than??
sorry for my bad english
Hey, there's even worse than our good old Touch HD !
I recently tried a Touch HD 2 a friend wanted to show me (actually the guy who sold me his Touch HD ! ) and now there's an even biggest problem with HTC Sense (or maybe just Windows mobile 6.5) and the capacitive multitouch screen !
The good old scroll bars on the sides of the windows have been replaced by a thin line popping a slider when you press on it...
But, now it's all but precise !
As your finger now touches an entire area at the same time, it becomes almost impossible to scroll precisely to a desired position in a long list or directory (just try to go where you want in the Windows directory, and you'll go quickly mad) !!!
Maybe it would be better with a stylus, but there's no stylus provided with the Touch HD 2...
Or maybe it would be better using the arrows keys... The ones that should be on the pad if it was there...
Now you know why I told you that story !

(REQ) Page scolling with g-sensor

I know this is a touch screen phone - and that OK but the screen gets smudged easily and, of course it can get damaged if you're a bit heavy handed. What would be fantactic is an application that mimics finger scrolling by using the g sensor i.e. tip the phone a bit and the whole page slowly glides across - tilt a bit more and it moves the page faster. This would be great for web browsing or ebook reading - maybe for games too.
Tirinoarim is making a great virtual d-pad application. but I don't think it's going to do what i'm thinking (though I may be wrong).
Any body know of anything that can do this? - or wanna have a go at coding one?
There is a program called g-scroll but it only works on Diamond.
I had that in my Athena, but I never use it. Found it a real pain.
Maybe just need doing right

Initial impressions and many problems (long)

Just came from my Tilt to the Tilt2. Having lots of problems. Device is slow and a bit painful overall.
Background: Not a "chef" level enthusiast but comfortable upgrading ROMs, registry edits, general customization, good device organization/maintenance, etc. Been using WinMo since my trusty PDA2k. Definitely a big HTC fan overall. I was really excited to get this device as on paper it seems so much better than my Tilt. I had my Tilt for quite a while (~2+ yrs) and ended up sending it back twice to HTC for repairs. Each time they fixed something and broke something else. I finally got so sick of the non lighted keyboard (that they broke) I "upgraded" to the Tilt2. Needless to say I have been spending a lot of time here since then...
1. How many folks are sold on TF3D? Sure it looks great, a nice iPhone ripoff but does it really make you more productive, faster, offer a more intuitive UI, etc.? I'll have to say my impression is no. I am certainly giving it a chance. One big gripe is that is was fairly easy with WM 6.1 and a good today screen customizer to get access to everything you needed on a single screen. Under TF3D - no way. How many clicks or gestures does it take to start a new text message? How many to get to your tasks/to-do list? Why do all of the icons in the "top bar" such as BT, 3G, volume all go to the same useless "Notifications" menu? Very keen for feedback from some longer term TF3D-ers.
2. Phone: Used a lot of BT connection to my car system for hands free today. Dropped calls like mad. Way worse than doing the same with my Tilt/WM 6.1. General call quality is substantially improved including clarity, volume and speakerphone. But what the heck how much does quality really matter if you are dropping like mad? To me these devices are phones above all and that means phone and BT should be rock solid. With HTC they simpy NEVER seem to be. I suppose this could simply be AT&T in San Diego but the comparison with the trusty Tilt was so much worse I don't think it is signal strength. How about the slide gesture that is required to take a call? That is clumsy, why not just a red and green screen button, sure I know you can use the hard buttons but I prefer the larger easier to see screen based buttons. Perhaps the justification is less accidentall accpeted calls while reaching into pant pocket...
3. General speed, stability: Not good. Tilt/WM 6.1 was quite a but snappier. Tilt2 hangs more often and many apps are a lot slower. One staple app for me is Resco File Explorer. It is so slow it is almost useless. Just like laptops/desktops CPUs get faster, you get more memory but the overall experience and speed does not really improve.
4. IE: Sure the zooming and panning via TF is nice but when you don't want to use the mobile version of google the page is never loaded at a good size, the cursor does not seem to default in to the search text box. I seem to have to pan and zoom before entering a search. Am I really that much of a noob? Also, I just can't seem to loose the stylus and select URLs with a finger or fingernail. It seems there is a minimum required zoom level to click URLs. In general web pages load substantially slower than with IE in WM 6.1. I need to spend some more time with Opera (or others?) but not happy thus far at all.
5. AT&T bloatware: Removing it requires going through a highly manual process or using a fairly highly customized ROM. Ugh.
6. Clock: Both the fact that you can not change the clock size and the annoying auto-flipping numbers "feature" when the today screen refereshes are enormous oversights IMO. Also main TF home clock does not match clock in the top bar. They can be off by 1-3 minutes.
7. Screen ocassionally gets locked in landscape after keyboard closure. How many versions of hardware and software will it take for the HTC/Win folks to get this right? Why do we need the Gyrator or other software to get this to work like it should out of the box?
There are tons of positives for sure. One huge one is how clear the device talks to your desktop when connecting the cable (sync, disk drive, interner sharing). So much better here than prior WM versions. Of course the screen in general is crystal clear and a real beauty. Keyboard is quite good as well. The in call phone menus are great too.
I'm keen for any encouragement, general advice, ROM advice or specific advice or fixes for any issues above. Thanks.
TF3D is cute, but IMO not useful.. You're right, that stupid "flipping numbers" thing is beyond stupid. What the hell is it really doing? Every time anything changes, it flips random numbers around. Perhaps if the device and graphics were uber fast it wouldn't be bad, but it's.... well, daft.
If your phone is dropping calls, that's hardware/radio, not Wm 6.5...
Personally I had my Tilt 2 about 3 days before I moved my SIM from my Tilt to my Tilt 2. In that time I was setting it up, adding my programs, updating random stuff to go from QVGA to WVGA. Along the way I used TF3D a little, but it was mostly just aggrivating so I went back to Pocket Plus where I can use my Today Screen plugins that I love.
There's a whole thread about not using TF3D, I think you should just read it, I think it covers most of your gripes ;-) TF3D is just a Today Screen plugin, you realize that right? If you want, disable it, use what you used in WM 6.1. It should all work, assuming resolutions or other compatibilities, but personally all of my today screen plugins worked.

If you're comfortable flashing ROM's - try some of the offerings from the chefs here. I used my T-Mo TP2 stock for about 2 days before flashing. They make a huge difference in both performance and usability. I'm partial to AthineOS and NRG's ROM's, currently on the latest AthineOS with WinMo 6.5.1 (Start and OK on the bottom - very finger friendly) TF3D 2.1, as of last night. I use a product called Sashimi (Google it) which automates flashinbe by auto-configuring all my apps, wifi, ActiveSync, customizations, etc. I can now flash a ROM and be up and running as if nothing happened in about 30 minutes. The custom ROM's are all mostly tweaked for speed, and are absolutely faster than my stock ROM was.
Opera is head and shoulders above IE these days, get a copy of 9.7, it compares very well to the Safari browser on the iPhone - the best mobile browser IMHO.
I've had a Tilt (numerous WinMo's actually), iPhone 3GS (still have it), Android G1 (still have it), and think right now this phone beats most.
The one area I will agree is very buggy still is the landscape flipping. I just make sure I'm in a very compatible program (Opera, Mail, Garmin, etc) when opening the slider, and then stay away from TF3D while landscaped. It's a bit of a PITA, but worth it for the awesome keyboard.
Don't give up, this phone has a ton of potential.
