please help ... I've just managed to establish a wireless local network between the xdaExec and a Vaio laptop through their WiFi adaptors (the laptop is connected to a fast broadband line through ethernet).
All I want is to be able to surf the Net on the xdaexec from another room of my flat (I don't own a wireless router and the connection between the laptop and the xda is in the "ad-hoc" mode).
At the moment I can't open any websites from the xda ... any ideas ??... (I attach the relevant screenshot) Do I need to go out and buy a wireless router ?? (there must be a way to do it without one I hope...)
you could try (assuming the Vaio is winXP) using terminal services to connect to your laptop then surf the net on that via the XDA.
You need to enable remote access on the laptop, (right click my computer go to properties, click remote tab and tick the box) set up a username and password for your account on the laptop.
Then open Terminal services on the XDA and enter the Local IP address of the laptop.
This isn't really the correct way of browsing with your XDA but it is an alternative, and cool when you show people how you can control your laptop from your phone!!
HTH
if using winXP:
bridge your ethernet and wifi connections using network connections and make sure that the "allow people to connect throught this connection" (or something like that) box is ticked
not winXP:
no idea sorry
oh damn why don't u simly buy a wlan router? its not that expensive... and its easier and more secure too.

Is there a way to disable the internet passthrough in activesync? I use a remote software that allows me to use my phone on my PC when docked, SOTI pocket controller. So I like being docked at work, however (this is where this question gets weird)... my work has disabled the port to access MSN messenger on our network, I want to be able to sign in from time to time so I thought using my PPC would be great! However the internet passthrough in active sync means that it won't access the MSN messenger port either, because it's using the same network, so if I undock and connect using GPRS I can use messenger, so what I want to do is be docked still but have my device use GPRS internet instead of the passthrough, this way I can sign on to messenger while docked. Does this make sense? Respond if I'm not being clear enough. I have found web versions of messenger that work, it's just too slow for me and gets in the way, if I could use my PPC it would be just perfect! Thanks in advance, it's a weird one so hopefully someone will have a suggestion that will tickle my fancy out there!
I would like to know the answer to this as well. I have GL installed and cannot retrive new messages while my SX66 is docked.
As much knowledge as there is out there, this one seems to have the experts stumped.
Lots of people asking the question on the net and no answers.
I'm surprised no one has replied to this yet.... It's actually pretty easy to fix. Right click the ActiveSync icon in your tray and click connection settings, change "this computer is connected to" from 'the internet' or 'automatic' to work network. Your phone should no longer look for a connection through AS on these settings.
Doesn't work for me. The wireless data connection is immediately terminated on the phone once the USB cable is plugged in, regardless of how the XP ActiveSync software is configured.
That's rather odd, I used to do just that to make my AIM go through my phone rather than the computer while using MyMobiler.

have you tried the 'This computer is connected to:' and select 'Work Network', in the Connection settings dialogue box?
edit1: wow, typed this weeks ago, Google chrome saved the page till today...
edit2: on your phone, In connection settings in My Work Network, under the Proxy Settings tab, is 'This network connects to the internet' ticked? try un-ticking it if it is...
Work or "The Internet" it doesn't matter what I select on ActiveSync. It still disables the H on my phone as soon as I connect the USB cable.
For connections on my phone, all I have even in the list of connections is MEdia Net. I can't uncheck Internet there or else I wouldn't get Internet while disconnected.
Despite the fact that my only existing connection on the Settings/Connection page is MEdia Net and that only is set for "Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)" I still can only access the Internet through my work server when connected to my work desktop.
I noticed the same behavior when syncing via Bluetooth. As soon as the connection with ActiveSync is established, wireless connectivity is shut off.
My apologies for the kick, but if someone knows the aswer, please enlighten me!
I cannot disable the internet pass-through either, not even when I select "Network (work)" in "This computer is connected to" in the Windows Mobile Device Center (The Vista version of ActiveSync).
I have set-up Exchange on my phone, which connects to domain.com. My Exchange server runs in my network, so when I connect the phone it should connect to 192.168.1.2 instead of domain.com. If it would stay on HSDPA, then the connection would remain OK. Because of this, it won't sinc with my PC either, because it keeps hanging on connecting to ActiveSync (of which the server cannot be resolved).
Many thanks to the person who knows the answer!
This thing is a bigger pain than it should be, that's for sure. I think I got it working - simultaneously syncing via Exchange over GSM and locally through USB (obviously not the same items).
In my setup Contacts, Calendar, E-Mail, and Tasks are using the mobile network to connect to our Exchange server's external Push interface. Notes, Mobile Favorites, Files, and OneNote are syncing through USB or Bluetooth (I tried both) when I connect locally.
I'm currently running Vista on this PC so things might be different on XP or Windows 7. On the PC in Windows Mobile Device Center I enabled "Allow data connections on device when connected to PC" and changed "This computer is connected to:" Work Network.
In Windows Mobile, in the connections manager, edit the existing connection. MEdia Net shouldn't have a proxy set and under the Advanced tab click Select Networks - if the "Programs that automatically connect to a private network" is set to My Work Network then make sure and edit the settings to have "This network connects to the Internet" unchecked. Or alternatively, just change the private network to be Media Net as well. That should do it.
On your pc if you open up ActiveSync and go to file>connection settings and make sure "allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop" is checked you should be able to keep your mobile internet connection up while still connected to a pc.
Hi guys, I recently destroyed my XDA2 and got a 2s on the insurance
Bluetooth on WM2003 SE if fair poor, but I managed to upgrade the stack thinger to 3900..... so I'm not completely XDA illiterate.
However, the wifi baffles me! I have access to an unsecured wireless network with internet access, and my 2s will connect to it. When I go on the the internet on my XDA, even with wifi connected it still tries to connect GPRS to use the internet. If I keep clicking cancel, it will load the page (presumably through the wireless network's internet access).
It has become clear that I have no idea what I'm doing with regards to networking. Could someone post a quick guide as to how to set up the wifi (from scratch) so that when it finds an unsecured network it will automatically use it for the internet.
Sorry if there's already a thread on this but I really can't find it. Cheers guys
-Mike
just what i need as well, i have just bought a wifi router so i can use the internet on my xda2s.
using the wireless manger -> wireless LAN manager i get:
STATUS: connected to network
SSID: NETGEAR
TX RATE: AUTO
MODE:INFRASTRUCTURE
CHANNEL 11
BSSID: 00-09-5B-D7-DC-2A
MAC: 00-09-2D-0B-C0-A6
but even when i pull the Ethnet cable (forgot how its spelt) out of the back of the router it still stays connected. so im thinking its more my PC than the xda. the thing is the router came with no software so i have no idea if its connected properly. when i pull this Ethnet cable out of the wifi router o get network cable unplugged. The network card is Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller. Which I have never used.
if anyone has a any ideas it would stop me pulling my hair out.
Sorry to hijack this thread

Mike, I dont think the wifi first and GPRS next works. It doesnt work properly on mine either. If I try a internet access via gprs and a local wifi is readily available, the system does not automatically switch to local wifi.....I think this could be a microsoft issue than a xda issue.

when u pull out the ethernet cable from the back of the router, can you still surf the net from you xda or PC?? that seems odd. So either you are not connecting to "your" own router, or someone else has a same router with unsecured setup and you were locked onto their service....if you follow what I mean. what happens if you kill the power to your router? you should definitely notice that the wifi service disappear in your xda and PC.
Dont expect a router to disappear by simply unplugging the ethernet cable, if the router is powered up, it will show up on your xda and the PC although obviously there will be no internet access.....
sorry if i wasn't clear. i meant i was still receiving a signal from the wifi router. i could never use the internet on the pda
update:
i can browse my pc files wirelessly using resco explorer, using the standard file explorer i can view the pc files using \\network/c and i have finally been able to connect to activesync.
however i still can not connect to the internet.
Any ideas, from looking on this forum it seems lots of peeps are having problems with this but nobody seems to have the answer
XDA Wi-Fi Solution....It Works!!!!
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and new to XDA2i (presumably XDA2s is same!) ....
I too had many frustrations connecting the wi-fi...but now I've cracked it, here's how.......
On first very first use (or following a hard re-set) device users are prompted to choose “What do you want WLAN to connect to?” The option bullets are ‘Internet’ or ‘Work’….’Work’ should be selected, this will connect them to the nearest WLAN (if this network is WEP encrypted it should be switched to ‘Open’ rather than ‘shared’ as is often the case).
Next prompt asks for any WEP Encryption ‘Pass Key’ to be input, when doing so omit any ‘-‘ between character pairs. Normal start-up should then be completed. Once device is up and running…..
From ‘Start’ pull-down on the ‘Today Screen’ select…. ‘settings’>’connections tab’>’connections icon’>’advanced tab’>’Select Networks’> pull-down ‘My Work Network’ > ‘OK’ out of selections to save and exit.
Go to ‘Wireless Manager’ in programs, select WLAN icon from main screen (which should turn green to show active), then select mini ‘WLAN’ icon from lower toolbar to see the status of the connection, quality of signal etc.
That did it for me......
Cheers

I have tried this already, this just routes ad-hoc (computer to Computer) wifi connection, the wifi I connect to is infrastructure. I need to use the wifi in my pda and somehow to use it through the usb port into my vista laptop, like as a wireless receiver or using the pdas wifi whilst its connected. thanks for that route, but been there, unless i'm missing something. please let me know if so. thanks
I see what your trying to do but im not sure you can do that,
I havnt tested it but i would try this:
you could give your PC a static IP and find the PDA's IP when its connected to your laptop via USB, then enter
Attach your PDA to a WiFi network and find its IP, then connect your laptop to the PDA via USB, then give your laptop a static IP in the same subnet as the PDA and give one of the DNS servers as the PDA's IP and the other as the DNS server thAt the PDA has picked up from the WiFi network.
Make sure IE is set to 'automaticlly detect proxy setting'. In my head this should work but i have found what i think and what can actuly happen is VERY different.
Let me know how it gets on or at least post the outcome.
Thank you

WOW! you know ur stuff, but i wouldn't know the first thing about the info you gave me. do a dummies guide and i'll try it. cheers for the info tho.
Hmm, dunno if that would work - no harm in trying though..
If you connect via usb then it will setup from the activsync and the dhcp within it, normally along the lines of 169.254.2.2 - but you would have to use this subnet to switch the laptop too (don't use 1 as that will most probs be the dhcp svr) in order to communicate with the device and this is where I see the problem.
You would only be connecting to the device, u can not use the wireless subnet as you have no connection to this just the pda, so if you set your laptop to the subnet of the wifi by rights the network should just look at you blankly as it will not be able to see past the activsync connection to get to the wifi subnet.
Or at least that's how I'd see it happening.
I think i'll just buy a wireless receiver. lol. haven't got a clue what you are both telling me. thanks anyway. maybe somebody can create a cab with settings if poss, or a program?
would there not be a hack or reg change, which in the wifi-router download at start of thread, which will add or change the ad-hoc connection to infrastructure instead? or would this be impossible? thanks
btw: you a running vista on a laptop which is so old that it doesn't have wifi???
i think you should go for a wifistick (~ 10-15 €?!?)
i cant connect to internet via USB
my computer has wireless internet connection
i connect via Activesync to share internet from PC but it doesnt open internet
guys why cant i connect to internet via Activesync, internet explorer doenst open any site
please help, what settings are necessary at connections?
Hi
The connection settings need to be on
Allow USB [ON]
Allow Connections to COM [OFF]
This Connection is connected to: [set this to automatic]
The other settings you can choose what you want them on as they do not affect the way the PC sees your phone.
IF this does not work i would try a reinstall of active sync or deleting the device from active sync and re-adding it.
Cheers Dave
it says cant get IP address automatically..
OK
When you connect your phone it gets assigned onto it's own network port so it could be the settings on this.
Connect up you phone. Once this has been done on you PC goto Start>Control Panel>Network Settings.
From here you will be able to see the phone. It will be under Lan or High speed internet and then the Local Area connection with "windows mobile device" under it as well
From here right click on it and goto Properties. Click on the Internet Protocol TCP/IP and the click on properties when this lights up beneath it.
Make sure that it is all set to Obtain Automatic for IP, DNS and Private IP
This should cure the fault. Let me know
Cheers Dave
thanks again
i guess, i tried it before.. there was 255.255.255.0 as DNS and IP blank..
i changed it "Automatic".. but the same.. doesnt work
Ok
Only one last thing i have found that it may be.
If you go on your phone Start>Settings>Connections>Network Cards
Check that they are all set to Automatic. The one that really counts is the Remote-NDIS Host. Make sure that this is set to automatic and there is nothing in the Name Servers Tab.
Also what Browser are you using on the Phone. Try using IE.
Cheers Dave
I tried all mentioned in this thread, but still my internet is not working. It shows error code 0x80072f78.
HI
I'm trying to share internet using the USB cable and activesync, I already configured my internet connection to share it with the new "local area connection" created when the HD is plugged in, but it doesn't work!
and by the way my computer has an IP:192.168.1.X, but the local area connection has an IP:192.168.2.X
really I even don't know if this is possible, but I did it with my old palm then I thought it can be possible.
thanks!
Using usb or bluetooth with activesync will share in automatic the PC internet connection without the need to set internet connection sharing on the pc

Either with OR without my HD can't see the internet connection on PC with active sync over USB.
Huh
I just plug my HTC Touch HD into the usb port and select "Internet sharing" and it comes up straight away, even works from scratch on windows 7 cos i tested it!
