Ipaq 3970 to WM 5.0 - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hello,
im an old reader of this form, cause im reading it since 2 years, but never tryed to write something.
Now im really interested in this... the upgrade of an ipaq 3970 to WM 5.0.
I know that noone tryed it, cause i really couldnt find anything on interent. But i found that someone update its ipaq 5450.
So the two has the same hardware i think apart the processor (new version) and the wifi.
So... someone can help me or explain me, cause i really cant get nothing until now.
I tryed with the described method for 5450 to update, but the Hima update tool isnt able to connect to my ipaq.
Every help will be appreciated,
thanks,
Tommaso

i've yet to have confirmed anybody ever porting a rom from one device to anohter even if the hardware was somewhat the same

h5450 to WM5
Could you maybe post some more info - links on this upgrade of h5450 to WM5? I'd like to try it. I've done few attaempts which have failed, btu so have others to upgrading to WM2003. But maybe I'm doing something wrong.
please post more info.
Cheers
Y

Uhm... i dont think that here i can write links or something else about a software that sure is warez.
So u can find it easily on p2p channels, but i dont know really if it works. From what is written yes and i can believe this yes, cause i struggled much and i could update my 3970 bluetooth stack to the very last one stack outta there of Broadcomm and make it work. So i suppose that there arent so much differences from pda to pda.

iPAQ 3970 to WM 5.0
Yes, I'm interested in it too!
Can any one guide me how to do it in kitchen ? !
many thanks!

As a user of Familiar Linux on a few different Ipaq devices I can confirm that the 3900 and 5000 series use the same installation file for installing Linux, so it may be possible to 'cross-flash' both these devices, however as always, make sure you have a good OS restore file available.
Actually perhaps the best way to go would be to use the OHH bootloader used in installing Familiar to save a ROM image file before trying any exotic upgrades, might help in any unbricking that may be necessary if things go wrong....

WM2005 on a Blue Angel

I have a Blue Angel as mentioned in my signature and I have what I believe are all of the files needed to try and install WM2005 Build 14326.0.0.0 onto it.
Here are the WM2005 files I currently have:
HimaUpgradeUt - 512KB - 5/5/2004 4:54PM
nk.nbf - 32,769KB - 3/21/2005 9:08AM
And the following came from my existing ROM:
ms_.nbf - 16,833KB - 2/3/2005 7:45PM
radio_.nbf - 4,097KB - 2/3/2005 7:45PM
I also have a good copy of ActiveSync Beta 4.0.0 and have all of the instructions that were made in the main WM2005 post for installing on the Himalaya and I'm assuming it should be the same for the Blue Angel.
My device info currently reads:
Model No: PH20A2
Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition Version 4.21.1088 Build 14132
ROM Version: 1.36.00 WWE
ROM Date: 01/13/05
Radio Version: HA00_140
Protocol Version: AA3.3.301
ExtROM Version: 1.36.110 WWE
Hardware Version: 0041
This is what it came with out of the box, I have not installed the updated ROM Audiovox released the day the phone was released because I have never had a single problem and some people who upgraded reported problems and that some files were a day older than the version that shipped in the original ROM.
-------------------
Now my 1st question, the newest updated ROM installer package from Audiovox which was released 3/4/2005, has a different version of the upgrade utility, it's called "HaUpgradeUt - 424KB - 12/23/2004". The package it was included in from Audiovox's website was called "HA_SPCS_13600_113_00140_6600". Which upgrade utility is the best to use or does it not matter?
Now my 2nd question, has anyone yet tried this on a Blue Angel? Is there anyone here who really knows thier stuff who is willing to help me if I get lost or screwed up so I can be the Blue Angel WM2005 test pig?
Thanks!
hi
i have a pda2k with 1.33 rom and radio rom 1.08 and my cooked rom
i tried the upgrade but got the device authentication error.. tried it with the explained patch and the other method in original wm2005 post.. the himupgrade starts the procedure and then stops after some time saying an error occured..
but you go ahead and try it..may be you will do something differently and will succeed..
note: i have tried the xda 2 SE rom and imate jam rom and almost tried the alpine rom on my pda2k.. there is nothing you cannot revert back from
just incase if you are curious what happened after the above roms..my device didnt boot.... no problem...just unplug the usb port of the cradle and run a wwe rom made for xda 2s or pda2k ...everything will work then!
good luck..
keep us posted!!!!
in the above post: i mean unplug usb then replug usb and then run the BAupgrade utility....
can you upload hte 1.36 rom you have??? does your device have wifi and camera???
thanks

Where is the post for this "explained patch method" you are referring to? Also I'm considering the post titled "Microsoft Windows Mobile Version 5.0 I can share" as the original WM2005 post so we are on the same page in our thinking on that one.
The ROM is a free download from Audiovox, I guess I could upload it though.
I'm assuming the BAupgrade utility is on this site for download?
My device does have the camera but no WiFi, it has EV-DO instead. It's a CDMA phone, not a GSM phone...
your running the Verizon EVDO version of the the BlueAngel a CDMS 1xrt yada yada device. Most new ROM images are made for GSM phones then latter altered to talk to CDMA modules. In this case I think ot only would you not have a "good" experience but would warn against it. Second BlueAngel devices have OEM driver for the slide out keyboard. You will most likely loose for sure its use with this new OS. This is why the only devices it is worrking on right now are non-hardwired keyboard devices. Also there seems to be a notable diff in the hardare implimentation between HTC based devices. What software might work with one may not at all or damage another. Sorry for the down news but I think unless you have a keyboardless device I would not recomend playing with it. Just my 2 cents.
What you can do though is grab some of the elements (image files) from the new OS in other threads here, and overwrite the files on your device. Kind of like adding crome package or racing stripes. still the same car, just feel new
Thanks for the input. I'm running the Sprint version, not the Verizon one, same difference though pretty much, lol. 2.5G Vs. 1xrt and both have EV-DO, and then of course the frequency of the Verizon digital and Sprints PCS, but yeah both CDMA
I really couldn't care less about the keyboard, I don't even use it, never really have. Honestly, I work for CompUSA and if this thing gets buggered up I'll just exchange it out. I'm going to do a full backup tonight, hard reset, dump the existing ROM and then start the process just for grins to see how it goes. As long as it's not dog slow, text messaging works and email along with voice functions I'll be happy as heck. It'll atleast be fun to screw with and then I can always go back later.
I'm still unclear on some things like the country code and stuff that was mentioned in the other posts. Once I know I have all the facts and all of the files I'll give it a try and post back here. I'm off Sunday, Monday, & Tuesday so I'll have 3 days straight to play. I have to say my only real concern is it working with the CDMA radio which hopefully it will since I have a good copy of the latest Radio ROM for it...
hi 92GTA
yeah were on the same page..
wm2005 i can share is the original post..and i think page 10 has the answer (im not entirely sure though the post has now 17 pages!!!)
@ 92GTA : can you share this 2k5 ROM ? can you upload to a ftp and give us a link
bad :
read properly : he WANTS to install WM2005 on his IIs.
Why should you people go around risking your devices like this?
It's like putting diesel in a petrol car..things will screw up...
The 2005 upgrade currently available is only meant for XDA II devices, not IIs or II mini...or whatever. Hardware differences will render your efforts rather futile save for a massive hack.. Sigh.

already tried this guys, it doesn't work, the bootloader cannot read the CE image, nd therefore hinders the device useless, but i managed to flash back to 1.31 and all is working now.
Hi Guys,
Im here with the same question,,
Can we really upgrade XDA IIs to WM 2005... or anyone haas done it.

Thanking you for your time.
hmmm...
Has anyone found a way to get WM5 to work on a blue angel??
I am new to windows ce,

WM5 on the CDMA Harrier

I along with a ton of other Harrier owners can't wait to get WM5!!!
In light of the "NO GSM" error people are getting I'm assuming there is something in the BA ROM that checks the Radio on boot.
Has anyone actually opened up the latest 2003SE Harrier ROM and the latest 2003SE BA ROM and actually looked for what the difference is? I'm hoping someone can do that and maybe modify the WM5 BA ROM thereby compatible with the Harrier.
I've tried opening both my 2003SE ROM using the "er2003edit" but it keeps saying the password is wrong. Also it won't open the WM5 BA ROM.
Any thoughts???
Hi, I have the harrier XV6600 and I have a bit knowledge related to the ROMS and stuff, I'll be trying to figure out what the difference is, i'm assuming it's the whole Kernel it self, but not sure, anyways, can you provide me with as much information about ur device... carrier, rom etc... also where u able to boot up WM2005 at all on your device? I get to the screen with the four colors then get to the menu, and ones I hit the envelope it just gives me a white screen and it stays there for ever until i reset and then i'm back to step one..
I would like to know if it atleast is capable of booting up the OS before I decide to spend sometime trying to make it compatible with the CDMA network.. thanks
No Harrier owners as of yet have gotten it to boot. We all simply get the NO GSM error after install and after the screen you mentioned you got to.
I've cooked my ExtROM onto my SD Card and resized my memory so I'm ready for it atleast. I also have the correct installer for the Harrier as all of the Harrier specific tools for unhiding, unlocking, and resizing the ExtROM. Also I have all of the 2.04 ROM version files of all the .exe's that all the BA guys said WM5 was missing and had posted from their 2003SE ROM's. Of course we don't have the WiFi file. I also have the patched WM5 ROM nbf without the file error that mamaich made.
It's the kernel thats different, 2003 and 2005 are using the same bootloader. Looking at the 2003 gsm rom, the kernel is very similiar to the 2005 rom. Getting the cdma radio layer running would be easy enough, but, we have to get the kernel to boot the OS. Not sure if the 2003 kernel will do it, i'll give it a shot though. May even be able to throw one together in PB
,Dave
Sweet, I'll be waiting for the results of your attempt!

HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL
"dll rilcdma.dll"
This is what is preventing the boot-up, I believe.
Any HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn that are unable to load will cause the phone not to boot up.
I am sure this says "dll rilgsm.dll" on the BA. We need to change this to "rilcdma.dll" and copy over the .dll from the 2.04 ROM.
Then dump the ROM and load it on the Harrier, this should hopefully get it booting, if there are not any other bad device drivers.
We also need to make sure this is based off the new patched ROM that mamaich made...
Well here is the rilcdma.dll from my 2.04 ROM:
Wow, you guys rock. It sounds like after some work that it will be possible. I just wish I knew how to help... I do have several devices to test on but I have no rom building experience...
Can't we just hex edit the information of WM2005 dump file? using a hexeditor, but then we would need to copy the file, I'm actually thinking that the rilcdma.dll file might be included already, I remember ones flashing my device with a 2003Se rom, and finding the rilgsm.dll file and my phone was working properly? maybe it's generic to include both the files?
either way we would need to get someone with a gsm phone to do those changes, and copy that file, dump the file, and then we'd need to try them on our devices?
ANY GSM users outhere wanna help?
Bump.
Glad to here people that know what they're doing are working on this.
Hopefully the thread topic won't scare off EVERY GSM user.
Course... they're all too busy playing with the new OS to notice us
Bump
I think it will be a while, if at all, that there will be a CDMA version.
Most of the developers are using the GSM version and thus have no way of testing the CDMA one. Additionally the GSM version is not working perfectly yet, so this will add to the time that it takes. I think we will see a CDMA universal before we see WM5 for the Harrier
*Bump*
The 6700 is out through Sprint! Maybe we'll be able to rip the necessary CDMA files from it? http://www.sprint.com/business/products/phones/ppc6700_allPcsPhones.jsp
Holy crap! Somone "check" one out in a store and grab the ROM with an sd card...
They're only available through business channels right now and should ship next week according to those that have ordered. They were also told that consumer channels should be able to order next week sometime, but no word on when they might start popping up in the stores. Remember, this ROM won't directly copy to our devices, but we might be able to get the necessary files off of it to get WM5 working on our Harriers. It's another step in the right direction at least.
Bump again, lol....
Apache ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=157140
Well, I'm no expert, and I have no equipment, no software, and no skills, lol. So I can't help much here. But I do applaud the effort and wish there were some way I could contribute.
Anyway, I would imagine that if you take the ROM from an Apache (Sprint PPC-6700) and compare it to the ROM of a Wizard, whatever the differences are is probably exactly what the differences between the Harrier and Blue Angel ROMS need to be (for WM5 to be functional on both).
Just a thought...
all you people out there waiting for this to happen should probably check out this thread... looks like good news

Best ROMS for PDA2K and for a beginner

Hi
I am going to start using my PDA2K again as a temporary replacement for the Vodafone V1620 I am giving up on.
My PDA2K has the 1.4 rom with 1.12 Radio.
BEFORE I go to all the trouble of reloading all my programs, data etc.
Should I be doing any upgrades?
And is there a real 'stupid persons' guide to doing the upgrade?
Cheers.

Well yes I have been there.
But I have to be honest and say that much of it was WAY over my head.
All this talk of cooking this and that, external roms......
I am not sure I have seen an idiots guide and I REALLY need one.

Well we have a page on how to upgrade to the lateest 1.42 rom which if followed is prity close to an idiots guide (bar the fact we have not mentioned that you need to turn on your pc to do it).
This will get you a rom that smeels of even stinks of t-mobile.
Maybe you can live with that (I have in the past).
If you can't then you need to learn about cooking your EXT rom.
UPgrading is not a past time that should be taken up by "Idiots" (your wording) as this can lead to a paper Wheigt that looks like a BlueAngel.
When I came to this site I had a German MDAIII running on a Swiss network. All I wanted was a god damm English rom which T-Mobile would not give me, I-mate how ever would.
This site has alllowed me to understand how to upgrade, given me the files to do this and answerd a lot of my question (only after I learnt how to ask them).
Given your situation with 1.40 and 1,12 radio I can only sugest that upgrade the radio (link in wiki ) to 1.13.
So far I have not seen any issue that have been fixed with 1.42 as in confirmed that they have been fixed. However If I was to falsh me device again I would use the 1.42.
Have fun.
hi MDAIIIuser,
I am on 1.40 rom now and still debating if its worthwhile upgrading to the 1.13 radio. What are your thoughts on this?
1.12 seems to work ok for me so far.
I thought for a simple solution I would upgrade just the radio and maybe the bluetooth.
When I followed the link on Wiki for radio 1.13 I got a .rar file.
What is one of these?
My PC does not have a clue what to do with it.
I have to explain that I am not PC computer literate being a long term Mac user that 'just works' some of this Windows stuff makes me want to swear. )

Is there a plan to port WM6 to X50 (not V)

I am sure there are alot of X50 (not V) users who would like to have such an update.
If someone know about ROM files which are suited - that would be great.
Thanks in advance.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but still...
As far as I know the main difference between the X50 and the X50v is the VGA screen (and speed of CPU - 624MHz). If this is true, how difficult can it be to convert the already working WM6 for X50v to X50?
Maybe some of the developers can share this issue with us???
Thanks in advance.

Someone with an X50 would have to develop the ROM because the bootloader and ROM images have differences between the X50 and X50v. I *think* (unless I'm forgetting about any prior discussion over this question) the only thing holding X50 back from WM6 is the lack of a ROM developer who actually owns an X50 as opposed to an X50v. As far as I know, MagLite only has X50v(s), so he could not develop an X50 ROM. You might ask him if he'd be kind enough to develop an X50 ROM, assuming that someone would be willing to donate an X50 to him. Just a thought. Sorry I don't have any better news for you all.
Thanks cavyman for your note.
Still I do not understand:
Since the HW is more or less the same (except CPU clock and maybe a graphical processor), the bootloader should be the same (I do not think the HW is to be changed for the bootloader).
As for the ROM itself, I guess you are using an emulator for the X50v and recompiling the WM6 sources to this platform (you need the real HW just for checking if this is working in the REAL world...), so if this is the situation, can someone share the sources and the emulator and maybe someone from the communitiy will be able to recompile it and test it...
I am not sure I have enough knowledge for this, but I may try...
Am I correct???
no i dont believe they use emulators as emulators dont emulate the hardware
and it all comes down to drivers
just 1 diff in a driver and it dont boot
just 1 diff in the memery map in the bootloader and it dont boot (may even turn into a brick)

Exactly! One given difference is the video driver. I suppose if you could extract the driver from an X50 ROM and port it into the X50v ROM, there could be a chance of getting it to work. However, the fact still remains that memory mapping is probably different. I am not sure why someone else hasn't ported WM6 to X50, but I also don't know of a WM5 ROM for X50. I'm guessing there has to be a very good reason why someone hasn't been able to do it yet.
yes believe much of the driver foundation was changed with wm5 over wm2003 so few wm2003 driver can be used at all
many wm5 drivers seem to be usefull for tayloring wm6's though
Anyone with a x50 can customize it's rom to a WM6 one. You need to updrade to WM5 last level of rom, than dump the rom to gets it's WM5 nb0. Once you have the nb0, you can customize it using the tools available in stickies from Bepe and Mamaich. For an x51, it's even easier because you can get your nb0 with the img2nb0 tool.
Dear makuu,
Can you please elaborate on this suggestion?
I have X50 with WM5 A02 (which is the last one I know was officially out...).
Suppose I can extract the ROM out of it (nb0 file), this is still WM5 not WM6... So how can I convert it to WM6?
Don't I need the sources of WM6 or something???
You get the nb0 like mentioned here:
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/x50-...w-create-your-own-flash-images-your-axim.html
Than you use the rom editing tool from stickies here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=260 (those from Mamaich and Bepe).
You can first try to edit the existing WM6 ROM from Maglite, to have an idea but I guess that you can just take the appropriate files from his rom. You also need to work on xip like explained here:

What about this guys:

Hi,
landaleav, IMO, I would not trust this seller as I would think if there was a rom for the X50, it would be available here.
As it is not here, I would use caution when buying on Ebay.
I am contacting the seller to check if this is really for X50 mid range...
I think it worth 5$ to check this...
I will post my experience, but if someone has already was in touch with him - please let us know.

Ebay has X50V rather than X50
Guys,
currently, it seems that those sellers have the X50V verison and not the X50 (midrange).
I asked the file list of their delivery and found out that (according to the file name) it is for X50V...
If I'll have new news - I will post them...
