niversal hacking for dummies

Can someone please take the trouble to come out with a guide for dummies like me who find the idea of tweaking their universal appealing, but have no experience in hackning PPC's? I am ignorant but adventurous, and feel that there are more like me, perhaps too embarrassed to ask!

Sorry for the missing "U" in the subject of the previus post. Just thought the subject should be clear!

I need simple quick answer

ok, thanks
install it? Wow, you want a simple answer to an incoherent question. Yeah, good luck with that one.
Edit: If you mean while cooking a rom, well then, simple answer is READ. There are plenty of tutorials posted for your benefit.
Sorry yes200, but the only simple and quick answer is "after a lot of reading, understanding and a lot of work". Converting a CAB into a package is simple in theory, but (IMHO) quite complex in practice and dotted with pitfalls. It's a bit like driving a car - complex but easy to do when you know how, but a bugger to do when you're learning!
Why has the original question been removed? Now the thread makes no sense.
Trust me, it made no sense with the original question in place. It was something ambiguous like, 'how do I install packages?"

Wiki Update Request

Could somebody who knows the terminology update the Acronyms section? There's a lot that I've run across in the forums that aren't there or in the Glossary. Just take a quick look through and add what's missing, then nOOBs like me don't have to ask as much.
Also, might I ask that the wiki possess more on general programming and coding for android and other moblie OS? I like just learning how it works, but I've found little on that. How do you develop a ROM, what's the programming basics...that sort of thing. And if you know of a place on the web that already does that let me know.
I'm loving the info on the site otherwise. I haven't posted much, but I've read a bunch.

There are a lot of Acronyms, probably a lot I don't know as I'm a Microsoft only guy , but unless you let us know which ones you're struggling with we can't help you.
Perhaps those that you come across, you can ask for on it's talk page.
Thanks,
Dave

[Q] Learn to make my own ROM - Tips and Advice

Hi there everyone,
Firstly, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum, it was a toss-up between General and Q&A but general seemed to fit to me. Also, I have searched the forum (and Google) for threads/sites on how to cook my own ROM but they all seemed slightly outdated or irrelevant, aimed towards WM7 handsets etc...
Anyway
I'm hoping to learn how to theme and become a Dev and make my own ROMs etc, so I'm here asking for any Advice, Tips, Guides etc.
I'm unsure on how I should start, where to start and what I should be doing exactly. I'm only interested in creating a ROM for the HOX, stock at first so I don't have to fiddle with too much and then I can hopefully progress and learn and move forward from there.
I thank you all in advance for your patience, time and knowledge, long live XDA!
Thanks,
T-L-H

Rogers S3 Rooting Flashing etc

Hi I am new to the android world and just picked up an S3. I want to root/flash or wahtever you call it so i can get better battery life.
Could anyone point me in the right direction? I have a Rogers S3.
Rooting by itself doesn't necessarily mean better battery life but you can tweak things more easily.
I'd suggest starting with the stickies.

Hey, I'm really new to the whole scene as well, the S3 is my first android phone coming over from iPhone/iOS. I was really nervous when I first came here and saw how overwhelming all the different versions/methods/tweaks/etc there are, and terrified of going through with my first flash.. I read and re-read a bunch of posts so many times I had them memorized...
anyways.. to make a long story short, once you've spent some time reading it gets a lot easier, and I'd suggest starting with some newbie guides to android in general, as well as specific to your phone. the end result for me was the following guide;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
I followed this, but whenever there was something I didn't understand I searched the forums for it to learn at least what the term meant, and if there was more I thought I needed to read I did so. I won't post every thread I read as I don't even remember lots of them, but I'd suggest using that one as well as newbie threads before you do much of anything.
seems like as long as you do a bit of reading, and ask questions in the right place, people here are pretty willing to help.. I remember watching a video somewhere that was pretty intimidating to a newbie as well, but from what I've seen it's not as militant as the video made it out to be
anyways.. just my two cents as someone who's recently been through starting from scratch.. and if I can help in any other way, lemme know
Please only open one thread about a subject please. I deleted your thread in the Q&A section.
And please don't post the same question in 2 sub forums.

This is refreshing to see, rather than 'i installed this and now my phone is nuked so bad it glows....help.' You have restored a small portion of my faith in humanity .
To the OP: The whole point of android IS the ability to tweak/mod/hack however you want or are able which of course leads to a seemingly unlimited pool of these customizations. The most important thing anyone can do when the make the decision to use an android device in anything other than out of the box condition is understand the consequences of what they are attempting. The best way to do that is to read and ask questions, although at this point in our world of information 99% of all the questions someone new to android might ask already have been answered...you just have to find them . Luckily there are stickied threads all over these forums that collaborate this information both in the general android as well as the device specific sub forums. I would suggest you follow in the footsteps of desucca, myself, and many more before you and read everything you can get your hands on to better understand how your device works, which in turn will give quite a big head start on any other android platforms you may use in the future. Welcome both of you to android, i'm sorry you had to suffer using that 'other' system.
