Would there be a way to modify the rom in order to keep the 4 digit pin and user information after a hard reset. My old hx2410 used the ipaq filestore for this and the hp protect tool.
I currently have a Qtek 9090 and would like a similar feature if possible...
Thanks in advance.
Florian
No there is no way. I would like to have the HP Protect Tools on my QTek 9100 too. But is there a way to extract the files from a rom?
Does a hard reset not clean out the rom and thus all its data.
So what do you want to protect as all the apps that you installed are gone as well as you contacts ect.
Am I missing something?
After a hard-reset the device is still locked with HP Protect Tools, so it's useless for the thiefs, they can't use the device!
Yes that's the reason I'd like the same feature...!
anyone know an security app that stores the password in a file that we could somehow modify the rom with ?
Anybody got access to a HP rom update file? We can try to take it apart.

Does this help????

It looks like hp hasn't issued a ROM update for WM5 yet.
I still have my hx2410 - if you tell me how, I might be able to send you the rom
I had a hx2110 upgraded to WM5 but i sold it I'm currently loading the german WM5 upgrade for it (donkey).
iPaq PDA (not sure about hx series), have a bit of persistant memory that they used for data backup, incases where your battery goes dead and data lost. These persistant storage is so small that it is usually used to stored data/file, not programs. I'm wondering if a hardreset will wipe this persistant memory or not. If not, they might happily store the PIN number on this persistant storage.
As for the HTC series here, either you put your PIN number on your Ext ROM or burned it into your ROM itself, there doesn't seems to have other method of keeping any means of data that is able to survive a hardreset. E.g. would be the SMS-theft software that will send silently send SMS to a defined phone number in the case of theft, but this phone number is burned into the ROM itself.
I'm on WM2003 SE on my Qtek 9090. And yes I was thinking about some kind of program that would auto-install from the rom after a hard reset and be linked to a pin also on the rom if you see what I mean. But how to do that I have no idea...
While having a security tool like HP protect tools is great against theft, dont bother using the one from HP. I tried it a few months back on an IPAQ and it is a pretty useless software, just like MS Pocket Streets with GPS. Increases bootup time by three fold, slows down general use with filesystem encryption, locks up occasionally when phone call comes in. And YES, you can remove it with a hard reset, which I did after a week to remove it.
Now i have the ROMs:
http://home.teleos-web.de/vschildmann/GER-hx2000_WM5_Upgrade.exe
http://home.teleos-web.de/vschildmann/GER-hx2700_WM5_Upgrade.exe
The First is for hx2100 and hx2400. Maybe anyone can extract files of it and test it.

update
Been at thiis for the last day, it would seem that HTC have revamped the memory layout, the Extended rom is now listed under vdisk under hkey local machine/system/storagemanager/profiles. so far had no luck trying to expose it let alone unlock it. will keep at it though.
anyone managed to get that chip unlock it's use?
I have some problem with unlocking my extended rom on Qtek2020i.
Anybody have any information about resolve this bad situation?
Guru&developers! Please help!
Hi Guys,
I do not remember the name and thread...pls try tosearch in Himalaya section. There's one chap who had extracted the Ext ROM from 2i and posted...and I have all those files...Pls check..and then we can ask how did he manage to do so
hi
you can UNHIDE the ext rom and get files from it but cant delete or write to it as it remains unlocked..
you can unhide it by finding a file called loadvdisk in windows directory (be careful not to reset as it goes back into hiding after a reset)
how to unlock the ext rom remains a mystery.....
i hope someone is working on it though.....
Does this help?

I think it's what you are looking for...
I know about loadvdisk.exe from Windows directory, but this program only unhide this part of memory.
I need unhide&unlock program, like program for XDA II
Hallo,
please, is any news about unlocking Ext.ROM ALPINE? Utilitily "loadvdisk.exe" (see above) Extended ROM unhiding, but not unlocking.
Thanks and Regards
what are the advantages of unlocking the ext.ROM?
Customizing must have programs and simpler start them after hard reset for example.
I'm seek way for unlock ext rom in 2i too but didn't see one, now.
I've another solution to unhide your 2i without any addition program.
just Hard Reset your Device in first screen do notthing just leave it & connect it with computer you will see Extended ROM folder
anyone had UNLOCK it????
i have a blueangel pda, XDA IIs made from O2, and I have a few questions since I upgraded to Windows Mobile 2005:
--When I installed Windows Mobile 2005, part of the instructions was to format my ext rom and unhide and unlock it to 128kb i believe, and now from what I see, my ext rom is gone in device information, etc. Is this a bad thing? Do we really need our ext rom?
--If I had to hardreset my PDA phone would it go to the normal WM2005 5.0 that is currently installed on it?
--When I soft reset my phone my boot screen is just white green bars and stuff, is there anyway to put it to an image in Windows Mobile 2005? I remember doing it in 2003.
--Also whenever there is an image in my Album if I try to delete it, my phone crashes and I just need to soft reset it, is this just a glitch with the application?
Please try to help me out here, I'm good with computers and familiar with it all so it wont be hard to explain to me.

Hope this helps:
1 After you have partitioned your extended to 128kb you will no longer see it under WM5. This is normal as the combined extended rom and storage you had under WM2003SE is now used as storage under WM5
2 Yes, If you hard reset with WM5 installed it will load it again after the reset (hope thats what you are asking)
3 Currently there is no way yet to change the boot image under WM5
4 Album does the same for me, probably due to the fact its designed for WM2003SE.
i have a couple of things that i have noticed in the last few days, and it aint anything to do with the patches, (i dont think)
1. when i receive a call, it does not actually start ringing and show up on the screen for like 15 seconds, i noticed as someone called me and it rung for a second and went off, i have voicemail kick in after 20 seconds.so i have called myself, and tested, and does not register the call for bout 15 seconds.
2. while listening to music through media player, it is perfect, until the screen turns off, when this turns off, the music stops. when i had 2003se on, it didnt do this, both screen and music stayed on, maybe its just a setting i dont know about,.
3. i am still without storage space for files, while my program space seems like it never moves...... 99mb free. ive probably missed something, but storage space is crappy as hell
any ideas guys??

What "ady" meant was:
1st: Install Buzz's Ext ROM Unlocker and unlock your Ext ROM.
2nd: Cut and paste them to your SD Card and save a copy on your computer for backup.
3rd: Perform a hard reset. Since you already took off the Ext ROM, you now have a pure Microsoft OS running on your device.
To answer your question, the Ext ROM is what you see being installed when you perform a hard reset. It is indicated by a progress bar during installation after a hard reset. The Ext ROM contains the customizations provided by the "Brand" name of your device.
The simpliest way to avoid the installation of the Ext ROM, if you don't want to unlock it is:
1st: Perform a hard reset.
2nd: "IMMEDIATELY" perform a soft reset by pressing the reset pin as soon as you see the "Microsoft Today Screen". By doing this, the installation of the Ext ROM is by-passed.
If you are going to ask me where to find the Unlocker. Just do a search. Hope this cleared it up.
Thanks for the excellent reply. Can you tell me what exactly would be excluded by not installing the Extended ROM contents? I am guessing this would be like selecting a corporate install on the O2 XDA EXEC?? Thanks again for any reply.

Any customisations your operator has made. It's hard to say what exactly as that changes per ExtROM (and each new version of Windows Mobile by each operator has a new ExtROM so...)
If you don't install the ExtRom you have plain Windows Mobile, if you install the Extended ROM (which it will be default) it adds patches, customisations (backgrounds, sounds, GPRS settings etc), button configurations, home page settings, add icons, remove icons, custom programs etc.
My advise is to read the wiki (link in top left) open up your ExtendedROM as the poster above advised and then customise it how you want, or just by pass it completely each time and add in what you want manually.

xanth is absolutely right. The Ext ROM changes with each "Brand". I am attacching a link for the O2 Ext ROM explanation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=32527
Some applications in the Ext ROM, you can deduce what it is made for like "default_Backgamon etc...(which installs the game backgamon in Imate Ext ROM) and some are similar to O2's, so let it be your guide.
why
you don't want a "clean version" it would not contain any drivers, camera software or bluetooth software that make life easy. your jasjar is not clean by bypassing the ext-rom. to prove this look at your programs the zip program and voicedial do not come with a clean wm5 image.

Actually ALL WORKS FINE with a clean install, as mentioned above, the only thing you might have to add is the settings for MMS, and video call capabilities. But ALL SOFTWARES INSTALLED WORKS. From BT to WiFi, camera app, voice dial, etc... I know because I already tried it.

Well that depends on the base Windows Mobile ROM. Some will have some features, while some won't (won't fit possibly?) and would require the ExtROM to install them.
I appreciate this is a Universal thread, but one example is the BlueAngel. The SX66 doesn't come with a camera so it's ROM doesn't contain camera software and if you used that on a regular BlueAngel (XDA IIs for example) you'd need to install the camera software seperately.
Hope this actually makes sense.
what about a real clean ROM...
i mean a ROM that does not contain any of those "dog barking" junks media files and themes (there is around 8MB of these), as well as unnecessary EXTROM files. YET sparing drivers for camera, bluetooth , and other crucial drivers.
thanx
go it
then you are correct to hard reset then soft reset before your device wants to load the ext-rom
unnecessary media files are not in the ext rom
they come with the winows folder and the my doc. they r more than 8mb , and they serving for NOTHING... so stopping the erom wont save you from them
Hello,
So I want to upgrade once again my BlueAngel, but as far as I understand, the upgrading doesn't delete the registry. I want to delete it manually, how should I proceed? And how do I hide the Storage? I remeber I unhided it, but now I want to put it back, to hide it and to get my BlueAngel like new
Any ideas? Thanks.
...where did you get your info from?
A ROM up/downgrade will DELETE everything on your device, including register and ExtendedROM (i think that's what you mean by Storage)...
Info from...
It was a deduction. I upgraded 3 days ago to WM2005, but decided to go back to WM2003se, because of the speed. Updated radio/rom/ext_rom and today, while cheking files, I discovered in /Storage the old 2005 windows folder, even a screeshot I took while I was on WM2005.
So not everything was erased during a complete install of wm2003se.
What do you think?
...you've got me...i dunno...i'm speechless. Someone else any idears?...
I haven't played with a blue angel in a while but as I recall, after it hard resets from the upgrade, you press one of the buttons on the left side to enter a menu from which you can wiope everything clean. I forget the details but they're available with a quick search of this site and/or the wiki.
Background:
on my Hermes the was a hidden section of the ROM space that held setting and software provided by its supplier
Question:
Is there such a thing for the Rhodium and if so how do i get to it?
You're thinking of Extended ROM. However ExtROM is no longer used in HTC devices, or any for that matter, and AFAIK hasn't been used since the Hermes (it wasn't in the Kaiser). I also don't think there's any way to add that to the device.
drat!
what im after is a way of having software and settings, pushmail for one, auto reinstall after a hard reset, i should prefer not having to use something like sashimi as there may not be a sd card in the phone
