Tethered I can only pull 110k down on the cnet benchmark. my understanding is that Houston is on the 3g setup. If that is the case why can my buddy's phone pull 300k from verizon. I remember seeing there was a reg mod to unlock. Any thoughts... also where is the dang question mark on the mda keypad
I believe the Cingular/T-Mobile EDGE network can be more apted described as 2.5G. It's not truly a 3G network like the EVDO network your friend uses with Verizon. Cingular/T-Mobile are making strides to bridge the speed gap as they are starting to roll out their newer UMTS/HSPDA networks. When they'll be fully done is anyone's guess. I'm a Cingular customer and I've rarely seen speeds above 180kbps. I think the registry hack you are referring to is to enable the 'E' EDGE icon.
BTW, the question mark should be the right arrow on the keypad. You need to hit the red dot first to access the keypad's secondary symbols.

i KNOW THIS IS LONG BUT IT IS INTERESTING! JUST GET THROUGH IT!
ON 6 July 2007 I posted:
[I was driving home from work on Vanowen St from North Hollywood, an area which has had 3G coverage for quite a while, while watching some free MobiTV in the LA traffic. My eyes widened with excitement when the phone (running BLACK MAGIC LE) showed full HSDPA reception as a crossed Lindley Ave, then Reseda, then Tampa, and all the way to my place on Winnetka where the HSDPA was still on but at 2-3 bars of reception. HOWEVER, to my great dismay, as soon as I ended the data call, the same ol' "E" was right back up there... forcing WCDMA + going back to where I was apparently getting full 3G reception failed to pick up UMTS... Now, given what little knowledge I have + some educated guessing, I suspect one of the following scenarios as being the culprit of this disgusting event:
A. There could have simply been a glitch in the phone, where it showed the H and 3G symbols instead of the E; HOWEVER, the streaming video on MobiTV was significantly better than anything i've seen on EDGE. Maybe some caching may be responsible for this?
B. Newly activated UMTS towers were able to register my phone when it attempted to continue an existing HSDPA data call, but have yet to be instructed to register idle phones looking for signals.]
Today, after repeating the same process while using speed tests to verify HSDPA speeds, I contacted AT&T and again, luckily, got to someone who knew his sht. He went ahead and listed some UMTS tower locations in my area and along my route home from work (Vanowen St) but stated that the towers were set for PUBLIC activation on 2 August 2007. So theres it is, the official launch date for 3G accross the whole SFV is 8/2/07. NOW, as for me being able to connect to these "unactivated towers": the tech agreed with my theory that while the towers fail to register my phone from a reset and kick it off upon data disconnection, they ARE OBVIOUSLY ACTIVE because I am able to connect to them, but only when entering their range while on an ACTIVE HSDPA connection. So here are my questions for the COOKS/MODS/PROS:
1. Are you aware of what method these towers may be using to screen phones for "testing purposes" (IMEI maybe?)?
2. Is there any way to trick the tower into registering my phone without having to drive to an "active" 3G zone and back?
ANY FEEDBACK WILL REALLY BE APPRECIATED!!!
all i have to say is LESS THAN A MONTH...HIP HIP HOOOORAY!
I really hope this goes all the way to agoura hills, that would make me a very happy man
After about a week plus of having my TP2, i realize that where i normally am surfing the net, i don't have HSDPA anymore. All i get is 3G. It's strange cos when i put the sim card into my TP, it gets HSDPA right away.
I've taken my TP2 out and in town, it gets HSDPA so that pretty much confirms that there is no setting problem. I've flashed with all the available Radio from the radio thread and none seem to help. I still can't get HSDPA where i'm sitting now while my TP would have full strength.
Anybody else has this problem? Is there a way to force HSDPA connection?
Anybody?
I just hard reset my TP2 and still no "H". Took the TP2 out for a drive closer to tonw and i get "H" which again means nothing is wrong with the settings portion.
Take the sim card out and put it into my TP, i get a strong full strength "H" from where my TP2 could not get
Weird & sad cos i use my data plan a lot.
Try downloading something and see if actively using the data connection switches it over from 3g to H
Let me preface by saying I don't have TP2 yet, still waiting on AT&T
I think without using something like Advanced Config (assuming there is a rhodium version), it will only show 3G even if it is in fact an HSDPA signal. You can adjust the setting with advanced config to enable the H display. But it is just enabling the icon I believe.
With the stock rom on my worldwide version it comes up with H when i use the data connection, otherwise it sits on 3g even in full reception ;- ) why i suggested it
worldwide edition is; world 3G on GSM right? where can you get that one!

Worldwide except the USA I believe. Otherwise I would have bought it long ago
dammit!
I want to upgrade to this **** from my TyTN that is falling apart but no Canada 3G until 2010 quarter 2. thats when rogers upgrades to 2100
HSDPA is 3G. Some taskbars on the Touch Pro 2 label a 3G connection as "H" or HSDPA.
You are getting the same data speeds regardless of whether the "H" or the "3G" symbol can be seen on your phone.
However if you get an "E" or a "G" that means you will get EDGE speeds and GSM speeds respectively.
The fastest is as follows from left to right: 3G > EDGE > GSM
Thanx for the reply guys.
HSDPA is faster then 3G right? Or did i get that information wrong
Anyway HSDPA is already enable in my TP2 as when i move to other locations...say closer to town, i do get "H". I just feel that the reception is not as strong as that of the TP cos at home where my TP has HSDPA connection, my TP2 does not
As mentioned in the title, I'm on TMo in the UK. In many places (even in London) I'm not getting a 3G signal and have to rely on GPRS. Hopefully this will improve when they merge their network with Orange, if that goes ahead.
Anyway, the "G" indicator in my top bar suggests that I'm only getting a bog-standard GPRS connection and not EDGE.
So, how do I go about setting it up to connect with EDGE? Any thoughts?
Cheers
Don't think Edge has ever been used in the UK by any network.
UK networks use HSDPA, which I believe is faster.
I'm sure that's not true - weren't O2 relying on their EDGE network to provide semi-reasonable data speeds for the original iPhone?
You don't need to do anything specifically to set up EDGE connectivity.
I'm on o2 and sometimes have to lock my TP2 to 2G when there's a weak 3G signal just to save battery. When you're in an area where Edge is available, the icon will switch to an "E".
At home, the o2 EDGE signal is a bit flakey, and it will flip between "E" and "G" even if I just leave the phone where it is. At work, the signal is better and I'm getting on average just over 110 kbit/sec on speed tests.
T-mobile are notorius for having a terrible signal.
And unfortuantely for you Orange isn't much better signal wise, so if they do merge i wouldn't count on it improving a great deal.
Oh and yes some of the UK networks are still relying on edge to back up thier 3G / HSDPA offerings.
From my own personal experience i would rate the uk networks in this order signal wise (best first, worst last).
Vodafone
O2
3 / Orange
T-mobile

I found the 'E' symbol to be switched off so using Autoconfig Tools 3.3 I set it to show when I was using Edge.

Yes! That explains a lot. Found the setting in Advanced Config and enabled the icon. Now I'll have to keep an eye on it and see if I get EDGE anywhere...
Cheers MusicArt1st.
As some of you may know, T-Mobile and Orange are merging
So what are the benefits to T-Mobile customers?
You should be able to get better coverage
Improved signal
Faster Internet
So when do you get these benefits?
NOW - and it's free
I've just done it and now instead of 3 bars i get 4

All you have to do is turn on Data Roaming in Wireless & Network Settings
I did this yesterday, thought it would be good. Seen no difference, not a thing so far!
Anyone know how to keep an eye on if I'm on T-Mobile or Orange cell towers??
Also when you enable "Data Roaming in Wireless & Network Settings" there is a rather nasty warning about potentially incurring charges from other operators, could it hop me over onto other providers without me knowing and getting me cross-network charging? (I'll admit I don't really understand the roaming part of this)
couple of issues with this:
1) 2G roaming only until 2011
2) Orange cell will only be selected if their is zero tmobile coverage. Auto selecting best cell site for signal strength will be next year.
In other words, this is a very basic roaming service.
You can force orange service but then you will only get 2G
i did this yesterday, will be better when HSDPA is added.
At the moment, until sometime in 2011 you will only use the "other" network when you lose your existing signal completely.
In 2011 it will just give you whatever is strongest, but at the moment you have to completely lose all your existing signal.
And it only shares 2g at the moment, so you will not be able to get better 3g signals.
but still useful for those times when you do in fact lose signal or your signal is low.
and if you sign up now then you'll be ready for 2011
First quarter is when 3g/Hsdpa roaming will be enabled.
You can manually select either network at the minute tho

One benefit is lower power after it locks on to an Orange signal when having lost the T-Mobile signal. Otherwise, mine would be stuck with high power drain searching, checking, verifying and registering to the T-Mobile network consecutively. I definitely now have 1-3 bars with Orange when I had 0 priorly. Very happy at the move.

Get off my network T-Mobile scum! >;P
Maybe change the title to include Orange users too?
Did scans today and its a seperate network and goes by the name: Orange T Mobile
HOW GENIUS ARE THEY?!

Incorrect, it will be called 'Everything Everywhere'.
Still a crap name really but there we go.

Yes, it will be called Everything Everywhere but if you're on T-mo and sign up for this, the network will appear as "T-mobile Orange" when you're "roaming" on the Orange network. I think for Orange customers "roaming" on the T-mo network it shows as "Orange T-mobile"

The networks aren't merging, they'll still be seen as two seperate companies under the parent "Everything Everywhere" company AFAIK.
Also, anyone else noticed the damn Content Lock problem? :/
I stand corrected.. twice.

Their project is called Everything Everywhere, but the network that you connect to when yours has lost signal is Orange T-Mobile (and vice versa)
Edit. Nvm, didn't see someone already said this

This looks really good.
I never got a T-Mobile signal inside our local supermarket, but now got a full 4 bars under 'Orange T-Mobile'... and as soon as back home, Im back to T-Mobile again. Cool!
I sent the text to have this set up on my iPhone. To get this to work on my desire I will just need to turn on roaming and aromatic network selection won't i?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
well orange sent me a text the other day to tell me my phone switched over to the t-mobile network for the first time...
after breaking in to a cold sweat and holding on to the nearest fixed object rather tightly, waiting for aliens to land, or the world to end...
I deleted the text and life went on as normal lol
I have just set up my phone! Hopefully this should improve Orange's poor coverage
Hi guys
I'm on T-Mobile (UK) and use a GSM Galaxy Nexus. In my area (Manchester) the 4G network has been switched on and I now have two 'EE' networks on my phone - one is the T-mobile side of the network and the other is Orange (I guess?) when on the tmobile network i get 2+mbps down on my internet connection. When on the orange side of the network (which the phone is VERY keen to go onto) it drops to >1kbps and ~1500ms ping on speedtest.net and horrific internet performance.
I pay t-mobile a small fortune per month but any complaint falls on deaf ears.
What i'd like to know is if i can modify the ROM in any way to prevent it roaming onto the poor side of the EE network?
Carl
As EE is now a single entity it'll go between the various masts and latch on to which ever it feels is closer/stronger - not a lot you can do about it tbh
However something must sit behind the two network names listed under find networks?
In any case, tmob have admitted it's a problem their end and are working on fixing it.
