My MDA III for some reason has a screen problem. It won't turn on, but if I connect it to the dock ActiveSync finds it and syncs correctly.
Soft reboots bring up the screen for the T-Mobile initial boot screen then something weird happens. Very gently over about 10 seconds the screen fades to black and then there is no life in it after that. The screen it fades from is not the boot screen, and it could just be random stuff but it looks like some kind of fantasy art. I know that sounds odd but I can't really describe it. It's like a faint version of something like this: h++p://www.cise.ufl.edu/~fishwick/art/sub.jpg
Anyway, is there a way to do a full backup without using the device itself? I'd like to try a cold reboot but was hoping I could backup everything first. If I just try and copy the files I get sharing violations and I have no idea if the file system can be accessed from the command-line. If it could I could try using robocopy to copy files off.
You can copy everything that is not in your rom through ActiveSync, i have no idea of full backup without accesing the device. Most important for you maybe is contacts and appointments and calendar entryes which you can sync with Microsoft Office Outlook and then back resynk in the device after hard reset, the softwarecan be copied to your computer but when you hard reset the device when you put it back it may not work
On second thoughts the image on screen is the T-Mobile boot screen, it just looks odd as it flashes up and then fades away quickly.
I do have a backup I made in early March but as I've installed so much software since I was hoping I could salvage it. I have copied off everything it will allow, might try and grab the registry contents as well if I can find a way, then I'll be doing the hard reset.
Just out of curiosity I installed Pocket Controller to see if I could remote control it. The screen is empty so obviously not. It allows me to see the tasks running as well, do any of these look dodgy?

Since i am relatively new to ppcs, i read almost all the forums to upgrade my BA to wm5.0
the first try, it was so slow, i tried the overclock software, pocket hack master and more, it still had ten second pauses when turning on or waking up. plus the phone was lagging, (slow)
I dont know but i stumbled on this by mistake,
Warning: Backup all data on your device to your computer..
(make a backup compy of all your data on computer)
1) all i did was the following press: (camers + record+ reset "hold untill options appears") then wait until some options appear on the screen, (three options with Yes/No options) I did the same as before, leave the first as No, the last two as Yes, then press the e (internet key), it will reset itself, this takes about 5 secs, this wipe my phone clean, every installed program was gone, brand new....
point1-> do not copy old backup folders to ur device, make only one new directory in my documents (i called mine Files) and place all your files and sub-folders in there.
Note: you will still have the folders, business, personal and my pictures
plus couple others
point2-.just like a PC using MS software, the OS looks for all directories before making next steps.. for example: if you open my documents on the Pc and my documents have a lot of directories/folders and files, the OS will locate all the folders and files before actually shoing a picture in my documents.
The ppc does the same, the less folders you make the better, the faster it runs, the amount of files doesnt matter, the OS keeps special tags on folders and these takes time to read, (NO, the OS doesnt check for sud-folders unless the folder it is contained in is beeing opened)
having less folders increases the speed on the device.
2) then i installed the camera patch, then the album patch to go with it
3) i then installed the keboard patch, you need this..
4) i did not install the fix buttons patch (This is what i think slows down the BA) forgive me if i am wrong, but i leave things as is.
5) i placed all the missing apps in programs, so i can use them just as wn2003
6) i installed all my programs
skyforce 1
spb pocket plus
quickverse bible
adobe reader
photo viewer
7) i then set up my internet connections for att
8) i turn on button lock
9) i turned off all sounds
then i reset...
thats all i did, now my ppc is fast, i am not even using pocket hack master, i didnt even install it (the truth is that i forgot, i didnt see the 10 sec pauses anymore, i power off the device for two hours, power on, no pauses.
a) phone perfect
b) camera perfect
c) backlights perfect
d) keyboard perfect
e) games run fast without a glitch
I dont know what happened, i cant explain it, maybe this is just by luck or by chance, but evrything works well and now for two days works better and faster than ever before.
try, maybe this works for you.
thanks to all the programmers that made this possible, i couldnt have gotten this far without you guys.
let me know what happened or what you think
Hey Mutty...I'm game...will give your method a try and report...you need to make a small edit... "then press the e (internet key), it will reset itself, this takes about 5 secs..." Pressing the e will not do anything, you have to actually press the envolope key.
I have a question do we have to move all the default folders (eg Personal, My Music..etc) in My Documents into one folder or just leave the default folders as is and create a new folder (eg my files) and add all future folders inside this one?
3) i then installed the keboard patch, you need this..
WHAT KEYBOARD PATCH?
Localized Keyboard cabs for different HW-Keyboard Layout...
Here on FTP...
I think it's probably the "Enable KITL = No" option that makes the difference. KITL (Kernel Independent Transport Layer) is a diagnostic mode for developers to debug their drivers and apps, so it's very likely that leaving this enabled will slow things down.
-no1
is it as fast as WM2003se?
i dont know what Kitl is, but one thing i know is that the device worked bettr than before, no pauses, even till now.. I just have to get used to having "ok" and the "windows" key set as soft keys. its kinda good though, i use them as default, for notifications and contacts. pretty cool.
You leave all default folders as is, only create one folder to store all your other files and folders.
where do you find the option to disable KITL
maybe that will ven make my device runs even much faster.
And yes its faster than 2003se... dont take my word for it though..
Try it yourselves, you will see.. even the phone works better.
1) no ten secs pauses on wakup
2) phone works better and responds better
3) I played skyforce without a glitch many times and it is a graphics driven fast pace game.
i have a keyboard patch, i dont remember where i get it from, but i think its used to turn on the backlight on the keyboard, i am not sure, but guess i just installed it
Guys just wanna ask did anyone has problem when recieving sms, backlight didn't on? just vibrate and ring (i set to vibrate and ring) but no light? anyone has the same experience?
It is suposed to be that way
oops!...

The KITL option is the first of the three options in the boot menu list - the one you said you set to "No".
well im giving yr method a go too, do you have the wifi problem?
nope, no wifi issue
Holy sh!"&%ยง! Do you mean that if WiFi's on when you turn off the unit (not soft reset, just suspend with the power button) WiFi will still be active when you turn the unit back on again?
wifi caused me a lot of problems. I had it on, and left it on accidentally. it went into sleep or suspend mode of course, but i thought wifi would go off as usual so i didnt check it. Ohh damn, it drained my battery dead. The worst part is that when the battery went dead, i couldnt make or recieve calls for a few minutes, then the whole thing just went dead. on reserve battery. i had to wait till i got home to recharge. half a day of my life was wasted. i depend on my phone very much.
OK, but have you tested if wifi will still be on if you turn suspend with wifi on and then powers on the PPC again? That's what I'm looking for.
holy moly, it only works some times. wifi keeps on only sometimes whaen my devise is suspended. say about 40% of the time. I DONT LIKE THIS....
That's 40 % more than most people get. It's the main problem right now, that BlueTooth and WiFi is turned off when the unit is suspended.
i've had my orbit for around a month and a half now, and it's brilliant other than a few problems.
firstly the only additional programs i've installed are:
SPB Diary
SPB Pocket Plus
I do have tomtom but i haven't re-installed that since my last hard reset.
so the problems are as follows:
every now and then when i try to unlock my phone, it seems to hang, with the screen staying bright but no response no matter what i try - the obvious solution is to soft reset which works 9/10 times
however, occasionally, i get a problem where the soft reset does not work correctly. The O2 screen appears (as expected) but about 1 second after the windows mobile screen appears, the screen goes completely dark and will not come on....
This has happened many times (sometimes on a daily basis) and the only solutaion i had worked out was to hard reset and take it back to factory settings - very annoying having to go through everything altering my settings so frequently following a hrd reset.
This problem also occured just a minute ago. i decided to do a hard reset and plugged the phone into my laptop so i could synchronise all my contacts back on. However i plugged it in before a hard reset was performed. Magically the screen lit back up! i was overjoyed, thinking i'd found a solution! so i unplugged it happily. thinking i wouldn't have to hard reset but the screen goes black as soon as i unplug it from the laptop...
i have since changed the brightness settings so that it's always on full brightness. this seems to have worked and avoided me the hassle of a hard reset. However i fear this is only a temporary solution
So my questions are:
is it common for the Orbit to hang regularly, causing me to perform around 1 soft reset per day??
Are the programs i have listed known to cause such problems?
Also has anyone else had such problems?
I've considered sending the phone back for an exchange for a new orbit? is this a good idea or may i expect the same with another, newer orbit (i've neverr really had a pda/phone before so i'm a little bit of a noob in this area!)
THANKS for any help, will be much appreciated!
CHEERS!
It sounds like a faulty Orbit to me. Although I did run SPB Pocket Plus on my Orbit I found it so sluggish with the Orbits slow processor that I removed it and haven't used it for months.
What happens if you:
1) Hard reset
2) Remove Active sync from your computer by the usual PC "add/remove" programs, and then go into the appropriate PC directory and manually remove what's left
3) Re-boot PC
4) Reinstall Active sync (which version are you using? I found AS 4.2 stable in a Win XP Home environment, syncing with Outlook 2002, then more latterly with Outlook 2007
5) Just synchronise your Outlook basics i.e. Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and nothing else.
6) If you use a Micro SD card install the HTC SD Card patch (see links elswhere in the forum for the patch)
If this setup is stable for a day or two, then try adding sometheng else back on, avoiding Pocket Plus for the moment.
If the basic setup is unstable, I suggest your Orbit is faulty. Mine runs quite stably, and currently running in a Vista Ultimate environment without problem.

Can a Moderator please remove this duplicate, I've no idea why it happened!
i have good news (kind of)! after upping the backlight in system settings the screen does not appear to go blank anymore.
i tested this by turning the brightness down - the screen (almost) instantly went blank and would not come back on after a soft reset.. however i took it home, plugged it in (my settings are for full brightness when attatched to a power source, in the test i only changed the brightness when not connected to a power source) re-adjusted the brightness and it works fine again now - in the past, this would have called for a hard reset due to the screen refusing to come on!
I've since found another thread on the forum from another user who seemed to have the screen going blank problem, he/she also cited turning up the brightness (even though that sounds obvious!) as the solution - which is strange as the screen doesn't go dimmer as such, it goes completely black, i cannot see anything at all!
however i have had a crash still...
to answer the above, i am running:
AS 4.2, as mentioned
XP media centre edition
AMD Turion 64 X2
and i have installed the SD corruption fix , even when i first got the phone and hadn't installed it SD never corrupted though (newer build maybe??)
I don't really use outlook to sync emails anyway - the only things i sync are the basics that u mentioned (including notes as well, sorry). i don't think there is much point in doing a hard reset as i think i only cleared everything around 2/3 days ago.
i will however remove spb pocket plus for the mean while, do u think i should also remove spb diary whilst i'm at it to ensure the device is completely clean?
i would like to point out however pocket plus is not running all that slow at all... the reason i installed pocket plus was for the closing of a program when the "x" is clicked, rather than minimising them (as is standard!).
Anybody know any registry fixes for this so i need not install any additional programs to access this feature? or at a push, a smaller program that offers only a minimal set of features including this specific one?
One thing i have noticed, is that the more programs i install the more likely it is to crash, this seems trend seems to occur irregardless of which particular software i have installed (which is why, for the moment, i havent even reinstalled tomtom - i'm just leaving all the installation and maps on my SD card for when i need them!)
The problem is, as of yet, i have not worked out whether previously i had to hard reset simply because the screen didn't come and i had not resolved this issue yet, on or due to something else - however, each time i had to hard reset the screen would go dark and unresponsive! As i said though, the stalls and soft resets continue for the time being!
thanks for the continued help
D'OH!
screen just went blank, and no response from device, guess my solution of upping the brightness settings has only improved the problem, not resolved it!
ARGH!
A few weeks ago, I flashed my wm5 rom to wm6 because whenever I used to soft reset the device, it would not turn on again without faking a hard reset and then canceling out. WM6 worked perfectly out of the gate for the first few weeks. I use the following extensively.
-- SPB Finance - stored on main memory
-- SPB Backup - backups stored on storage card
-- SPB Insight - content on storage card
-- PCM Keyboard 0.9
-- Resco Explorer
-- MS Reader
-- BatteryStatus
-- Direct Push on 24/7
-- Overclocked to 283
I powered the device on and noticed the signal strength was quite low, and it tried to connect to GPRS, but was failing. I clicked "Hide", and immediately, full white screen, and complete lockup. I didn't panic yet, and soft reset the device. It got to the green win mobile screen and then nothing... completely dead device, no lights... nothing.
I tried everything possible, including leaving the battery out for 20 min, but no luck at all. Then I tried to hard reset the device... but it said something about wiping the fat table, and it reboot, and I noticed on the main O2 splash screen, it would give the IPL, SPL, and no GSM radio version... and then would reboot again. I tried hard reseting a few times and each time the same thing!
When I soft reset the device, the orange message light would turn on, but the LCD would not power up, and then it would just stay that way. Plugging in the charger would cause the device to charge.
I tried removing the storage card, but no luck. Then for whatever reason I tried a hard reset again and this time it worked! Almost... When the reset was complete, I could not get any phone signal. The phone would keep trying to connect, then disconnect and disable itself, then try again every 2 seconds or so. It was as if the radio wasn't there anymore. No matter what SIM I put in, no radio, even though a TYTN sitting beside me got full signal on any SIM I threw at it.
I decided to re-flash the official ROM from my laptop, and now I had the radio working... but the phone would not charge, and activesync would not work. The USB was missing. When I tapped the battery icon, it said "unknown power level" and that was that.
After a soft reset, USB was back, and the device managed to stabilize. I reduced the overclock to 260, and it has been running fine ever since. I loaded all the programs back again except for SPB Insight. Reason is after installing this program previously, I would tether the device to the computer to sync the channels... and it would... but at random, it would mess up my direct push/activesync so that when the device was un-tethered, direct push would not work. I'm a bit worried of putting that program back on.
I've noticed a slew of disabled orbit threads lately, and just wanted to add my experience to this.

I am not sure what is going on, my Dash was connecting fine but all of a sudden, it is trying to connect to email and draining the battery in the process. It is also failing to download weather info on the widget on the home screen. Memory is being drained and RAM is loaded down more and more. I cannot connect to MMS anymore (That was the first sign of trouble) and it seems to take forever to go from one part of the home screen to another.
I actually had a similar problem with the previous Dash that I had which culminated in it finally cutting off at random times, especially when connecting to the internet or in a call. I was able to solve the problem when it got bad by doing a hard reset but, you can imagine, I hate going to such an extreme all the time since I have to reinstall everything over and over again!
A couple of questions:
1. Is there a way to save the home screen settings? Especially the Favs and Application settings and restore them when restoring after a hard reset?
2. Can I increase the memory on RAM without having to resort to a hard reset or re-flash?
Thanks in Advance!

there's a couple of backup softwares that you can perform a full or a custom backup of your system , like a computer, it creates an .exe file that you save on your sd card, so when you have to do a hard reset, all you got to do is run your backup file and it installs everything back to how you had it when you created the file. You can search for sprite backup or spb backup.
I think the only way to access more memory on ram is to flash a lite version of a rom.

Or use the PagePool tuner, then you have to sacrifice speed for memory, you would have to modify the .nbh so have to flash again.
Tried the Backup but...
Well, that sounds good but it just restores to the same problems. Is there a way to identify the menu (CHOME) settings, which includes the favs, and still do the hard reset? It is a pain to have to restore everything. At least, after getting everything restored from scratch, I can THEN do a back up so I won't have to go through this again. It seems like this is a common occurrence with Dash/and/or Win 6.1.
As an aside, the weather is not downloading anymore either. Email hangs either Connecting or Disconnecting. I am using Stylez 1.7 Rose (which, other than these problems, I do really like!

Now things have gone south! It won't reboot! Before this, it was saying that there was no RAM, to uninstall a program to solve this problem. Since I had just done a hard reboot, I knew it could not be loaded up with too many programs!
I decided to do a soft reset, using the reboot from the new task manager. I realized that it had started to reboot but was hung up on the HTC Excalibur Energy Star Compliant screen (the new black screen in the NRG Rose rebuild.)
It is still there and I have tried to do a hard reset using the WIKI instructions but still hangs in the same place. I can't get past this screen. I perfectly realize that, should this continue, I am Screwed! HELP! I can't make a connection to reflash even!
Thanks in Advance!
10 pm: I did the hard reset following Stylez instructions, it is still being a pain, I may have to do another hard reset to get things back. I am able to send and receive SMS messages and sync up again, to some extent but things are not as they were yesterday even. Not sure what to make of this.
Okay, this is not much fun, I did a hard reset, installed minimal programs. Now not hitting the internet and it shuts off randomly. I could not get it rebooted for the longest time this morning. Finally just decided to start up and ran all day. Tried to check a web site and it was not connecting. I changed the settings and it just shut itself off. I tried to reboot but, 35 minutes later, still not coming up. It goes through the HTC Screen and vibrates then shuts off. ONCE it go all the way to the new Energy star screen but it shut off after that.
Argggggggggggggggggggggg
I just noticed that the little light is flashing red. It will do that if it actually makes it far enough in the boot up process. I have seen this before, the device is reading the battery as dead or almost dead. Since it had a full charge when it shut down, I am pretty sure that this is misreading the battery. I am trying to take the battery out and reinserting to get it to read the battery correctly. I happen to have an extra battery at home and might use that, or put it on the charger, so I can reboot and reflash the Dash.
I have been waiting for someone to release a bypass for the screen lock problem in Windows Mobile 6.5. Haven't found one yet. It's been almost 3 years. Thought I'd throw some ideas out there to see if anyone can help me. As you know, this happens mysteriously if your battery dies and you have a password on the phone. It will not unlock after that.
My first idea is just to somehow copy all the data off the phone and onto your storage without unlocking the phone. This could be done somehow through the bootloader. Perhaps, change the bootloader so that you can read system files. Or, use some software that works along with the bootloader to download the phone's internal memory to the computer or copy to SD car. Another way might be to create an autorun file that runs on the SD card after the phone boots up. This autorun file copies the desired data to the SD card. Maybe, the autorun could just image the system files to the SD card in the background.
A second idea is to perform a hard reset and then try and recover the information with an undelete software of some sort. I really don't like this idea, and don't really consider this a solution.
A third idea is to somehow JTAG the phone or some other method of directly connecting to the phone's memory outside of the system. This might require soldering. It might takes many many hours. It might blow up in my face. I still prefer this to the formatting method.
A fourth idea is to somehow corrupt the screen lock application so that it cannot run, and the phone does not lock up after I boot it up. By the way, when I boot it up, I can see the home screen for a split second before the lock screen comes up. Can't tell you how many times I try to press the "backup" button on my home screen hoping to get my backup out of the phone.
A fifth idea is to flash a small linux operating system to the bootloader partition, so that I can read the data off the phone through linux. I don't care if the phone is bricked after this. This data is really important to me.
A sixth idea is to somehow keep the phone busy when it boots such that the screen lock application does not have an opportunity to load. In other words, the task priority is set to the lowest one possible. Thereby, giving me enough time to go ahead and backup my data while the screen lock application is still loading.
Corrupt the password registry so the screen lock application crashes.
Force the screen lock application into the background. It is designed to load into the foreground. Trying to think of a way to push it into the background so I can basically ignore the screen lock application.
Close the screen lock application with an autorun on the SD card or a shortcut from the keyboard.
There are so many ideas I have. I will add more as I come up with them. Let me know if you are interested in helping me. Which idea do you like? How can we tackle this challenge? Any and all help is appreciated. Please do not try to convince me into hard resetting. Thank you.
Have you seen a method for Windows Mobile 6.1 and lower? I can't seem to find much...
Wouldn't it be easier to just *not* have a screen lock password?
Just sayin.
