Timeout-Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

I have a couple of POP3 accounts on my O2 XDAIIs. I used to be able to download my email from ISP without problems.
Lately, when there is any email waiting, it will connect and try to download and pop up the following message "Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again."
The other POP3 accounts work fine, even with the same ISP, and this POP3 account used to work when I first got the unit. The POP3 account in question works fine from my Treo using the same SIM card (I have Cingular).
I searched all over the web and forums, I see many have the problem and some have not been able to resolve it. I tried:
1) Soft and Hard Reset
2) Deleting and reentering the account
3) Used the Sprite Mail cleanup utility (which basically cleans all emails and attachments)
4) Tried a registry key that had worked for some: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Inbox, create new DWORD ForceOffSSL and give it a value of 1.
5) Checked with my ISP – they could not see any problem with the account and works with anything else but my O2 XDA IIs.
6) I tried the Flemail 2006 program (formerly WebIS) and it worled for email. But the program is so buggy and slow that I had to delete it. This tells me the problem is with the native pocket outlook.
If there is NO email, it will connect, check and disconnect with no error.
There is a timeout somewhere. The other accounts can connect and download without problems.
Has anybody else had this problem and does anybody have any suggestions?

No one else has had this problem? Any suggestions?
I know it is device specific as it works on the same GSM account on a Treo.

PPC6700 with same problem
I just purchased the PPC 6700 and I love the device itself, but I have had many problems with it after owning it for only 4 days.
1. Sprint failed to let me know that my phone had to be updated. Thanks! I only found out about this update after 1 hour of phone tech support trying to find out why my phone randomly went into flight mode. What a pain in the ***.
2. I have my own servers and cannot download my mail from them or my home isp. Sprint by the way repeatedly told me this must be an issue with you server. I told him after being on the phone for 3 hours (I could tell he wasn't happy) "You must be right! Microsoft has always developed software much more then anything ever put out in the Unix world".
So the only help I guess I can offer to you is "Yes, I have the same problem with the native outlook that comes with WM5.0

Whenever I see this (and I see it a alot) on mt XDA IIs, I just select Accounts|Clear <account>
If it doesnt work immediately then I restart the Outlook Inbox app and/or disconnect/reconnect.
Been through searching registry/deleting this & that database file / re/installing accounts. Havent had to do that for ages.
I access 5-6 pop accounts from various servers, several are my wife's. My bet is that it has something to do with whether the current status of the emails downloaded in your device matches the server etc - due to the function that you can delete the emails from the server by downloading, deleting and then deleting from the 'deleted items' folder and re-sycning

ME TOO! Any resolution??
I am having the SAME EXACT PROBLEM with my new 6700...did you ever find a resolution?
THanks,

I am having the same problem on a Hermes / TyTN.
My first TyTN was fine. I have 3 email accounts. 1 uses SSL and the other 2 don't. There were no problems using either account.
Having replaced my 1st TyTN with a new one (due to poor wifi on first device) I now get the message 'Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again'.
The only solution is to use the ForceOffSSL setting for my 2 none-SSL POP3 accounts. Then I have to reboot the TyTN without the ForceOffSSL settings to use my SSL POP3 account.
Continually changing the ForceOffSSL setting and rebooting is annoying, so for the time being I'm using nPOP email client for my non-SSL accounts.

getting an email timed out on cingular 8525
I am getting the same message 'Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again'. I am having the same problem intermittently with Htc Tytn with a pop account yahoo. I seem to connect without a problem on the internet but i do get this error intermittently. any solution?

Same here ... cannot send mail via OptOnline Account
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK...I got a resolution to this last night on the Cingular forum.
Quick answer is that OOL's SMTP Server is locked down. I needed to change the outgoing server to Cingular's (CWMX.com).
Thanks to anyone who took the time to click-in on this thread.
Happy New Year, all!

===================
Hi all, OK, this marks my first post on this board. I've been a lurker for a few months, and have settled into a Cingular 8525 as my first Pocket PC Phone.
I noticed a few days ago that I could not send mail via my OptOnline Account, unless I was using WiFi or the 8525 was tethered to my home PC via ActiveSync. I was thnking all along that it was probably due to some piece of third party software that I installed over the past few weeks (a hearty thanks to all on these forums who develop and/or market their wonderful wares, btw).
But today, for a lack of anything else to do, I hard reset and tried simply setting up that one account to try my machine out in its pure form. Lo and behold, I still get the same error, 'Messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then, try to download messages again.'
As a matter of fact, it seems this message itself is in error, since it happens when I try to SEND a message, not when I try to receive them. I have even received emails in this account at the same time this error message appears, but at any rate, messages in my outbox do not get sent.
As far as I can tell, all the settings are correct. I have played with them, and tried all the permutations I can think of, but this baby will not send mail via this account. My XpressMail and Hotmail accounts work fine, both sending and receiving, and I can browse the web fine via My ISP or WiFi.
I have spent a lot of time searching the web for an answer to this problem, but it seems it's been quite prevalent with WM5.0 devices for well over a year, and still does not have an answer.
So ... my first post ... which should have been a thank you all, and Happy New Year, has turned into a request for the talents of you folk who know so much more than I regarding these devices.
Can anyone please lend a hand? Also ... is it "legal" to cross-post this message onto other forums on this board?
Thanks so much to anyone who can provide a solution.

I got it working
Like others in this thread I was getting the "unable to download messages to device" error when sending. My solution is:
Try leaving the 'domain' field blank.
It's on the Server Information page, and also on the Outgoing Settings if you 'Use separate settings' for your outgoing server.
Hope this helps you.
Rich

Domian Blank
My Domain is blank and frankly im just getting very agrivated by this. Does anybody eles have other advice to give towards this "cannot download message"?

I've got WM6, I've tried clearing and deleting the account, soft resetting the phone, making sure the domain field is empty, etc. It still gives this error for my POP account while my IMAP account is fine. Anyone find a solution?

Yes, deleting the domain really works in some cases (f.e. Gmail), but the same error occurs in my other account although I delete the domain. And funny thing is that it occurs only when there are some emails in outbox, receiving emails seems to work normnally :S

I'm still encountering this problem after trying everything on this post...
any other ideas?

Just had the same problem tonight. My mail server recently changed IP addresses, so I suspect DNS issues were the cause of my problem. I tried using the new IP address in place of the host name, but that didn't work for me. The account settings didn't seem fixable. Deleting the email account entirely and adding it back did the trick.

Checking Yahoo email

Guys,
Cant seem to get Yahoo emails into my MDA Compact III handset.
I have gone thru the instructions, and filled in the email addy on page 1.
I am not sure what to put in for the User Name on page 2. I have tried using the email addy, and the email addy without the @yahoo.com bit. Neither work.
Obviously the password is in and saved.
On page 3 it is showing the settings as greyed out POP3 and Yahoo.
Page 4 shows Incoming mail: pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk (this was already filled out, I have tried this as a .com as well)
Outgoing mail: smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk (this was already filled out, I have tried this as a .com as well)
Domain: this was not filled in.....
I have asked for it to connect to both 'The Internet' and 'T-mobile Internet' neither have worked.
When ever I try to 'Send and Recieve' it always just comes up with a screen saying 'Incoming E-mail Password' showing my User Name, Password and Domain. But wont do anything more.
Can anyone confirm what format a user name should be. And also if the Domain is a req firld, and what it could be.
Thanks
Matt
The user name can be anything you want displayed on your sent e-mail, I use Mike Alder in this box and it works fine, the Domain box I leave blank.
From what you describe you have let the device set itself up automatically, I configured mine manually, you can still do this, but first I would check in your e-mail application on the PC what the pop3 address is "pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk" might be the automatically loaded value - but is it correct? - I don't use Yahoo so sorry I can't be more specific - Mike
Can i add my hot mail as well?
thanks
ASZ
I think yahoo charge for their pop email service. hotmail is free to use, and even comes with all facilities for mobile devices to receive and download email.
To connect to yahoo for free via your desktop you can use a freeware application called yahooPops which runs as a pop3 server on the desktop (to which your client eg outlook talks to ), and on the back end it connects via html, translates and downloads the emails for you. Not sure it exists for pocketpc.
Other ways from the browser on the pocketpc you can use mobile.yahoo.com, or used to be a wap.yahoo.com or wap.ou.yahoo.com , which is a text only mail service.
hi all,
i have had my MDA CIII for 4months now. And i used the auto steps walkthrough to setup the yahoo. and surprisely it actully worked....that was until the other day. I dnt knw whats happened, but its like they have blocked me out or something . I am bit curious to why all of a sudden it has stopped. i know the fact you are suppose to pay for pop3 access, but then how comes its been working fine for like 4mnths.
can anyone think why it might not be working anymore?
thnx,
Snoop
Hi,
Just to update things...
I eventually managed to get yahoo email pushed to my phone by subscribing to the £12.00 a year premium yahoo account. It's worked a treat since I joined it.
Not sure why it stopped working for you, or more accurately, how it worked in the first place! But the solution is to join the premium service...for me, it's worth every penny

hey matt,
ye i know i was proper shocked the 1st few months when it was working. altho it wasnt the best. bcoz my mda kept reading both normal emails and bulk mail at same time. and i get 100's of bulk mail throughtout the day. i not to bothered enough to receive yahoo mail by paying £12. I have web'n'walk from t-mobile, i recon im better off just checking it using the wap version of yahoo mail website. which is what i would recommend if yahoo isnt your primary account.
Snoop
Good point - I have the w'n'walk, but love the push email thing and since this is my main email, it's great to keep bang up to date! Its amazing how little I use email from my home computer now.
I am lucky that I get hardly any spam into my inbox (touch wood) - and the premium yahoo (aledgedly) has better spam protection...

Touch Pro 2 and gmail

I have had my TP2 for a few days now and i love it, except for the fact that I cannot send or receive email from my gmail account
I can access the internet fine, and use the youtube app fine, but whenever i try to send an email or hit send/receive i get this error message
"CANNOT CONNECT WITH CURRENT CONNECTIONS SETTINGS. TO CHANGE YOUR SETTINGS, TAP SETTINGS"
When i set up the email the only things i was required to supply were my email address and password....so i am assuming the problem lies with the way my handset is trying to access the gmail account, ie. trying to use wifi or something? (i dont have wifi, so i will only be using the "unlimited" interent provided with my t-mobile UK tariff)
has anyone else had this problem or do they know how to get around it as i have finally got myself a decent handset where i can (allegedly!) check my email on the move, but yet i somehow cant get it working?!!
Ihave tried both hard and soft resets to get this sorted but it just wont work and i feel like pulling my hair out!
n
I know it's not much consolation but it just worked for me...
I have a SIM free TP2 and UK T-Mobile Web'n'Walk.
Incoming mail server is imap.gmail.com
Account type is IMAP4
Username is my full gmail username
Outgoing mail server is smtp.gmail.com
outgoing server requires authentication is ticked
All this was set via automatic configuration.
Hope this helps,
Richard
This is what i have done to recieve and send Gmail trueout the standard email client on my Pro II.
First of all you have to enable imap at your gmail account which you can find under settings.
Then on your phone do the following settings.
- make an new account in your email client
- fill in your gmail adress
- fill in your name
- fill at incomming mail "imap.gmail" and account type "imap"
- fill in your account name (gmail adress) and password
- fill at outgoing mail server smtp.gmail.com
and those two checkboxes must be checked
- auto recieve and send is up to you
hope this will help you
ther's a known bug in windows mobile poutlook...
sometimes the autoconf for gmail doesn't work...(i had the same issue on my omnia)
you only need to enter the account details by hand..
to do that, in the first screen where your address is asked, enter [email protected]
leave it without the final m.
after that fill in manually all the account details, then when finished edit the account and put that m in the domain...
that should work...at least in my omnia was the only way to get gmail working...
I used this guide en it works perfectly

hi, thanks or all the replies, most appreciated.
however, i have now established that i can get my gmail account working - but only over wifi!?!? when the wireless router is turned off i get the same message as before, so there must be a setting or something that is telling my TP2 to look for a wireless connection when performing a send/receive, rather than using the "internet" (if thats the right term) that is included in my contract..AAAARGH...
i have had a look but cannot find any settings for this so i must be going mad?
can anyone shed any light on this for me before i go mad??!!

Disable proxyserver, don't have the place where you can find this. I have a dutch rom
I have a gmail imap connection on my HTC Touch that was working great but has failed to connect for the past two hours or so.
I found that to change from Download 30 Days to 7 days and it worked fine.
Oddly I returned my TP2, and switched back to my VarioV, same problem (had worked fine until then). New TP2 is now here, so will start with 7 days and try expanding to 30 days later.

does anyone know how to do this? i cannot find this option anywhere?
is there any way i can see how my tp2 is trying to receive data from my gmail account, ie. if it is trying to use internet or wifi?!?
also, does anyone have any details for the settings that their tp2 (on t-mobile UK) is using when trying to retrieve email (not by wifi)??!
i'm also assuming that t-mobile wont be able to help me as i got my phone/contract via a third party and t-mobile themselves dont seem to stock the phone themselves....
I had this problem, it drove me nuts until I worked out what it was, if i was already connected it would work but it would not establish its own new connection.
To fix it go into the email settings for the account, then select:
Edit Account Setup
Next
Next
Next
Next (Outgoing (SMTP) mail server screen)
Click the “Advanced Server Settings” Link
In the “Network connections” it defaults to “The Internet” but if you have gone through the “Connection Setup Wizard” when you first installed your SIM it renames the connection, in my case to “T-Mobile Internet”.
Change “Network Connections” to the correct one i.e. “T-Mobile Internet”
hey presto, you can now get your emails
hope this helps everyone

if the connection has a proxy in the setup, than you can use that connection only if selected like above...
if you leave "The internet" the proxy settings are ignored...you have to select the exact connection..but this will prevent the gmail to connect with wifi

IMAP email inconsistencies

My ISP's mail server is an IMAP server. I have entered all of the info correctly and I am usually able to connect and receive and send email without issue. However I am seeing a few consistencies:
1) Occasionally it won't be able to send and/ or receive email. I do get an error about network coverage, settings, etc. but I have changed nothing from the last time I used it. Often, shutting down the phone and removing the battery for ten minutes will resolve the issue. Sometimes, it seems that it works thru WiFi but not through T-MO phone service, other times it's exactly reversed (maybe switching between the two is the problem?). It seems that I D/L'd a patch or found some system setting change for this problem on XDA-dev for my old silverface Dash (I now have a Dash 3G), but I can't find it anymore despite two hours spent searching the forums.
2) None of my self-created subfolders on the IMAP server are D/L'd to my Dash. Additionally, email deletes are not transferred either direction. Email deleted on the phone stays on the server and vice-versa. (Yes, of course I checked the "Remove from server " check-box)
Any help is appreciated!

SSL SMTP Mail Setup Wizard Problem

Got my desire yesterday, having defected from Windows Mobile and spent all yesterday and today getting very frustrated!!
I sucessfully set up my various email accounts - except one which requires a SSL outgoing SMTP server on port 465. When I put the correct settings into the setup wizard it simply fails to complete the account setup.
If I change any of the fields to an incorrect parameter, it gives an error but at least lets me save the settings and exit the wizard.
With the correct settings in place - it communicates with the server stating: "Verifying account information" and then promptly does nothing (it doesn't hang up, it just returns to the SMTP screen). The only way I can get out of the wizard is to enter an incorrect setting. This means that whilst receiving emails on this account is no problem, I am unable to reply to them or send any emails from this account.
I know there is nothing wrong with my ISP (T-mobile uk) because I am using the same SIM from my Touch-pro where this account worked fine for the previous 18 months.
Can anyone help please, before this very expensive piece of kit gets thrown out of the window

Hmm I had this issue where it wouldn't progress with the SSL option, and just kept verifying then doing nothing. I presumed it meant the server connection I needed wasn't actually SSL and switched to TSL and then it worked.

I got the same problem. It verifies and then goes back to the SMTP screen. Tried to change the security type from SSL to TSL to Nothing and still doesn't work. Only worked if I changed the port number to a wrong one which means I can receive but cannot send
I'm also having this issue. Very annoying!
I have opened a ticket with HTC over this and will let you know what they say...
I have the same problem. Reading another thread, this seems to come from the inability of Android to handle certificates properly. This is thread 663874 (for some reason the forum doesn't allow me to post the actual link) in this same sub-group.

Hotmail.co.uk addresses query

Hi,
I have been searching around and can't find the answer I'm looking for.
Can someone advise if they have managed to sync their hotmail.co.uk to their HOX (or any other Android device) specifically using the MS Hotmail mail option (which defaults to server m.hotmail.com) or via the exchange option??
Hotmail.com addresses sync ok, just can't get my UK address to work. Just to add the hotmail.co.uk mail account is succesfully added however no mails are synced. Looking at the account under sync options the sync icon is red and at the bottom there is an error which highlights something like 'experiencing difficulties at this time - please try again later'. This error appears to be constant.
I know syncing hotmail.co.uk addresses is possible via the 'other' mail account option (which defaults to POP3 settings) and also alternatively by using the MS Hotmail app but would prefer the above - just would like to know if it's possible or not.
Thanks in advance,
GW
It just start happening yesterday so its not anything to worry about yet, I have the same problem.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
UPDATE - I've just stumbled across something on Microsoft Answers where one user suggests to configure the account manuallly which you can only do through the exchange option (when you select the MS Hotmail option, various fields including the server name are greyed out).
Advises to use prefixes snt-m, dub-m, bay-m or debug-m in front of .hotmail.com in the server however unfortunately none of these work for me.

There are on-going problems it seems, mine periodically stopped sycning several weeks ago, would be okay for a bit, then eventually never sync'd at all. Microsoft don't seem to be bothered helping people fix this.
I then started using debug-m.hotmail.com and that got it working, then seeing the same advice others have mentioned I used the letter prefix I see when I log into Hotmail on a PC browser, and it has been working since.
There also seems to be another issue related to individual accounts that can only be fixed by Microsoft, so I'm thinking there are two issues.
Try logging into Hotmail on a PC and going into your calendar, a few weeks ago I was offered to upgrade to a new calendar, I think this has the effect of moving your account to a new server, which might help kick start everything again.
All in all though it is a mess from Microsoft.

Phil

Hi Phil,
Thanks for the reply.
Can you just confirm that you actually got it working (previously) with a hotmail UK address with debug-m.hotmail.com as the server? If so I assume you setup a manual MS exchange account under the mail account options to do this?
Just loaded up MSN calendar on desktop but there was no option to upgrade or anything :-s.
I've raised a question on MS answers site, hoping someone from MS will look at it and check out my account to see if they can do anything. Other than that I guess it's just a waiting game or switch to POP3!
GW
Anyone experiencing issues with hotmail UK email addresses?
Hotmail.co.uk addresses still not working with the m.hotmail.com server - anybody got this working or has an alternative solution, except using POP3 or forwarding?
