Folks,
Sorry if this is real basic stuff, but hey we all gotta start somewhere!!
Work is buying me a O2 Orbit for some development (actually buying 2) and I have just a handful of questions that I'd really appreciate an answer.
1) Is The Artemis 3300 the same name for the 02 Orbit? I'm 99.9% it is, but some big-headed person I work with is causing all sorts of grief saying the phone must be a genuine Artemis 3300 and the Orbit is a cut down version. True or false?
2) Is the GPS on it Magellan / Garmin compliant?
3) OK, touchy one this, I'm hearing great reports about Crossbow and want to know if 'flashing' the WM5 ROM that comes with the O2 Orbit is legal or not (don't worry, I'm not clean cut, just don't want to cause any problems with the boss!). And likewise, if I mess up the installation, is it easy to revert back to WM5?
In a nutshell, we've a dozon or so bespoke programs for SmartPhones, all developed on a SPV M3000. These SPV's are getting old now, cracked, chipped, damaged and the O2 Orbit looks perfect (especially as we're just doing GPS stuff, hence why I ask if it's Magellan / Garmin compliant).
Whilst WM5 is still widespread, naturally it would be an advantage to use the latest technology and to ensure compatibility (have one Orbit running WM5 and the other running WM6), but obviously need some roll-back if things go wrong.
Would really appreciate some feedback before I make a purchase.
Cheers.

No, the orbit is not a cut down version
2) Is the GPS on it Magellan / Garmin compliant?
Its a std Pocket PC serial emulated GPS feed. All pocket PC software that works with WM5 would work.
3) OK, touchy one this, I'm hearing great reports about Crossbow and want to know if 'flashing' the WM5 ROM that comes with the O2 Orbit is legal or not (don't worry, I'm not clean cut, just don't want to cause any problems with the boss!). O2 has not released an updated ROM for the Orbit, let alone an update to WM6 (crossbow). It is very unusual for providers to provide an update to a major version of Windows on a current model, so would assume this won't happen. Flashing an WM device with an unlicensed OS is technicaly not legal. In terms of reverting back, it is easy unless you have screwed the boot rom, in which case you have a new brick

There are two types of Pocket PC with phone functionality. Those that use the OMAP chipset, and those that use the Samsung/Intel chipset. The OMAP ones normally have more reliable phone sides (although this is changing with the latest Samsungs and Intels) but far slower for running applications (although, again, this is changing with the latest OMAP chipsets). The Orbit is an OMAP chipset, and although works well as a phone and GPS device, you should check whether any custom software runs at satisfactory speed.
Whilst WM5 is still widespread, naturally it would be an advantage to use the latest technology and to ensure compatibility (have one Orbit running WM5 and the other running WM6), but obviously need some roll-back if things go wrong.

Hi All,
I see a lot of people testing this and that, and everyday we seem to have 10000 new roms with extra functionalities, which is a great thing, but makes a little bit skeptical.
I have installed a wm6 rom some time ago, so far no bigger problems with it, the question that i want to make and i am sure that someone has already thought of this, is it really worth to upgrade to wm6?
Is wm6 more stable that wm5?
Is wm6 faster than wm5?
Is the software so much better?
What is your opinion guys?
Thanks!!
GO WM6.
998 solved bugs as said by Microsoft. This should be the first reason.
After that you have new graphics, powerful outlook which supports attachments and html messages and last but not last you can use touch flo or the hew htc home plug
998 solved bugs and 1000 introduced bugs?
imho, no it's not really worth upgrading
no it's not more stable
it might be slightly faster, but i can't tell
software aren't better, in fact, using same software may induce bugs that you don't see with WM5...
Touch flo don't work well with trinity
htc home plug is good. Does look really cool I have to say, and is probably the only reason why I'm still using WM6...
Once again, I stress that these are purely my experience, I've really only tried each WM6 rom for a week before it piss me off too much that i have to go back to WM5...
Well maybe I need a different rom for Wm6 ... I cant use no internet application unless im connected to my computer . Well some work thru wifi but others dead . And even the instant messengers dont work. I installed tmobiles oz and it only works if im plugged into my machine via activesync .. Im looking for a differnt rom and then ill update you folks . Oh the rom im using ... XDA Mobile 6.0.0
This is the reason why i question this upgrade.
I know its a super job all the cookers have done so far, but the overall use of the wm6 is still a little bit overrated.
I see a lot of people missing this and that, and while its true that wm6 fixed some bugs, its also true that it introduced some, while other are due to our rom cooking attempts.
to be honest i have not seen anything so must have for wm6, better office is a nice thing, but i have seen it already somewhere the install cabs, so one point down.
Touch flo? I have seen better implementations when this iPhone crazy mania was around. and we only had wm5 at the time.

WM6 is only worth it if you have already upgraded (as in, its not worth downgrading to WM5 when you have already made the jump) but I agree with others that WM6 is not really worth upgrading to. A lot of programs dont work properly and they wont for many months as the small software companies (eg. spb) catch up.
WM6 removes the NEW button from the SMS page, and replaces it with DELETE of all things. This sad reality is a metaphor for other idiotic shortcomings which make all the barely noticeable "graphical upgrades" in WM6 even weaker in comparison.
This is really the point of this discussion, its not a question of it looks nicer or has more or less buttons, the real question is if it really brings added bonus to the overall experience.
I am using WM6 for 3 months already, and to be honest, i don't see any real added value in the user experience. I feel that what we really need is some kind of changed ui that makes it all easier for the user to work with the mobile.
TouchFlo has some nice concepts, iPhone also, but i think that something even better can be done by the companies, and wm6 does not do much to help us in this direction.
Do you guys agree or disagree with me?

All true, the thing is if the button would have been a "delete" button in WM5 and previous versions this would have not been a problem.
I think it is great to have new buttons on places you would not expect them, it keeps us from transforming into brainless zombies.
No seriously, I agree, it's annoying. But hey, it's the way it is, and after deleting some sms, I'm getting used to/by it.
Furthermore, I like HTC WM6 (Dopod Australian) with the standard Windows Live today plugin. That alone would be a reason for me to upgrade.

I have tried it, and it even works correctly, however its not a good implementation of a good gui. And we both know its slow and buggy, and it does not work 100% as it should.
I like the way the buttons are shown in Spb Mobile Shell, but i still think that the main tools are not so user friendly and are too much pen dependent.
P.S. No harm done with the caps ;-)

So you have it ... .... So have you found anything to suit you better ?
i currently have a Wizard, and im happy with it, but i always had my eye on the motorla mpx 300 , because its such a rare phone, problem is its running PPC 2003 2nd edition, and i wish if someone COOKED or perhaps knows a place that offers one? its crucial, before i invest money into buying the phone
Is it still possibly to flash WM5 on MPX300? THanks!
I would be interested in this as well
Yes, I really like the design and function of MPX300 and still using it right now, even there's so many WM5/WM6 devices in the market now. Just one more step if someone can upgrade the MPX300 to run WM5, either software or hardware upgrade would made this phone prefect for me.
If I could find a Wm6 upgrade for this phone, I would start hunting one down today. That would be cool..... Never saw the phone before this post, very cool
wm5 anybody?
reviving this old thread...
i've heard of rumors, but never actually seen a wm5 for the little...
???
I found a post from someone that has gotten wm5 on the mpx300
Yahoo Id: coockie_monster26
AIM: CooCkieXP
Seems like a reputable source....
Find his post here:
http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=265391&highlight=mpx300
I'm trying to contact him for tips...
He replied the post in 2006, that's 2 years ago. Not sure if he still using MPX300. However, he is still an active member there. Hope he still have the WM5 files for MPX300.
hello all.
But Device like mpx300 have 32mb Ram so WM6 or later is not recomendet for this device its something like put wm6.1 to MPX200 working but very slow ;(
chears
However.... we just need of wm5.... that's much bettere than 2003se.
My apologies if I'm posting in the wrong area...
SO, I recently aquired an SX66 and am deciding on the 2003se Tmo rom, or WM6.5 (or whatever.
I can't find a concise answer: why do I want WM6.5?
What does it do that 2003se doesn't do, or why is it better?
Is it stable?
What are the major drawbacks to using WM6.5 on my BA?
Are there problems with going back to 2003se?
And what are the chances of bricking my device, provided I follow the instructions correctly?
AND what is (are) the most common mistake(s) that will brick my device when upgrading to 6.5 (besides cutting power/usb in process)?
I know some or all of the answers to these questions are out there (I've been looking), but it would be nice to have an idiot's single post to refer to for the most basic questions/answers.
TIA!
Hi,
if I were you I would never put WM 6.5 on your BA, I don't like 6.5. I would stay 6.0 or 6.1.
But WM 6 Has more compatibility with programs and has more functionality.
I don't know if its stable, because I cant get it on my BA( I have Ran WM 6/ 6.1/6.5 on a Kaiser).
Further someone else will awnser I think
Why not on your BA (do you have a ph20b?)?
im not sure about your taste in operating systems but i'm a XP loving vistahater.
wm6.5 is vista merged with OSX for your 5 year old phone. I flashed one of my BAs with it last night. it was horrible. speed wise, i about threw the phone against the wall. GUI wise? No more start menu, no more programs menu, no more settings menu. it's all been replaced with that ohsowonderful honeycomb gui. sure, it MAY be better for fingers, not that the old style was that hard, but christ almighty it makes doing anything hairpull-hard.
shortversion:
go with wm2003 or wm5. i find they're faster. i prefer 2003, since it runs all in RAM.
as for your brick question, i aint too sure. i'd like to know how exactly you brick one of these meself. i can't find anything on it, the documentation of the BA is surprisngly lacking for most of this.
I like the new builds of 6.5 with the big bottom bar, but it is so much less functional. I would definitely go with something besides 6.5, although in my experience I found it faster than any other version of winmo. I have had a few lockups, but mostly just with the comm manager/internet.
its hard to judge its fastness since its so..hard to navigate. i can't even read the icons, let alone try and use it.
microsoft trying to copy apple does not produce good results, methinks.
and hte new homescreen irks me. its usability is horrible, its better on blueangel but on the hermes it was just bad.
I still use WM2003 because:
1. The device is designed for this OS.
2. I don't have needless time to spent for OS experiments.
3. I like small and fast Office versions like the old Word and Excel Mobile.
4. I like the build in encryption in Excel Mobile.
5. I don't like the soft keys (>= WM5), because they replace more usable and faster menus.
6. All applications I need run under WM2003.
I'll change my OS when I change my device (currently hoping for the HTC Thoth.).
You guys are great.
To be hones, I hate M$ (no flaming, please) and have been running Ubuntu Linux for about the last year. I especially hate Vista.
I also appriciate the insight into the feel of the WM6.5 os. I don't care about newest, latest, or greatest. I want "works great", so it looks like I'll be sticking with the Tmo 2003se rom.
Thanks ya'll.
..why not install linux then? i got linux working on mine. i cant seem to interface witht he actual phone though. perhaps thats tonights project.
interesting thing to play with though.

I also tried Linux on my BA. It's wonderful and plenty of possibilities but ... only possibilities because the hardware is not open and people needs to hack this device.
I don't want to buy anymore a device that needs the work of some guys like xplode working hard to get these devices running properly.
I don't want to spend thousands of hours getting my 500 Eur. mobile connected to wifi. And when I ask the carrier he says me that they have no plans to solve the problem, so I solved myself the problem (thnks a lot, xda-developers).
No, no and nooo. So I decided to stay with my BA in Windows 2003se wwe and wait ...
-Hum: HTC blackstone. Very nice but Windows. No more Windows, please.
-Hum: Neo Freerunner. Open but no future.
-Hum: Iphone. Very nice. Very closed. No, thanks.
-Hum: HTC Dream. Linux but hiddenly closed Android on top capturing my traffic. NOoo.
-Hum: Palm pre. Linux but WebOS in the same way that Android or Iphone. No, thanks.
-Hum: Nokia's N900. Linux debian. Open. May be this is my phone. I will wait a couple of months to see your opinions.
Regards,
Àngel
Why WM 6.5?
because sooner or later, it will have more compatibility than the old OS.
more compatible with the new apps, games, tools, hardware like gps, a2dp support, wifi type N,and many more.
maybe today WM 6.5 maybe still craps, have a lot of bugs, etc, but newer OS is designed to be better from the previous one, it's just about time whether m$ can make it better or just make another mistake like vista..we'll see
that isnt entirely relevant to the blueangel though.
yeah. wm6.5 is the new wmstandard, so new hardware will have drivers for it and not for the others.
but we're not talking new hardware here. we're talking a device built in 2004 for wm2003, there is no new hardware for it. as for new appz and gamezzzz, wm6.5 is mostly a new interface from what ive gathered. the OS core isnt changed to the point of changing older APIs. programs should work both ways.
and sooner or later? its supposed to be replaced in a year. methinks nobody is going to jump on the bandwagon that fast.
pointis, its bad. unless you like the new interface, its no different. except slower.
I flashed on the newest tmo uk rom for 2003se, and I'm happy with it. I"m used to the 2003/se OS, and all the progs I know about and have a copy of, work on it.
Linux seems like a great idea, but I don't have time to spend getting it right.
I might try WM5 or 6/6.5 after I get my hands on the universal that's on it's way, but I need my phone to work, and work well, right now.
..i hate you. the universal needs to drop a few hundred bucks in price so i can grab 3 of them. it seems like a nicephone, i want it. damnit.
if you want i can DD my linux SDcard and upload the image. just dd it to a sd, pop it in and run haret. methinks it should work. actually im going to do that.
it was quick, feel free to better clean up the article but i have created a quickstart guide using my image for linux on hte BA.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BlueAngel_Linux
i'm tired and fizzled out, so anyone feel free to rewrite it to more easily understandability.
Kind of off topic, but the linux for the BA is ran off an sd card? Kind of like a live cd that doesn't touch the roms and storage(s); just pop out the sd and soft reset, and everything is back to WM? I would totally advertise that aspect of it... it might get more people into linux for the HTC devices (or maybe I just caught up to the bandwagon)
of course. thats how all linux is ran on htc phones from my knowedlge, i havent heard of anyone actually replacing WM with it.
If its any help
Is it stable?
Yes both 6.1 and 6.5 is stable enough.
I tried every rom and tested throughly and decided to stick to Sun Dreams 6.1 as it is very stable
What are the major drawbacks to using WM6.5 on my BA?
None
Are there problems with going back to 2003se?
Nope, as long as you dont repart you ll be ok to go back to 2003 (someone pls correct If I am wrong) But I dont think you would wanna go back to 2003se as most of the todays apps designed to run on wm5 and later
And what are the chances of bricking my device, provided I follow the instructions correctly?
Slim
Make sure no ones using the microwave washing machine and the dishwasher whilst they are hoovering you ll be fine. Just read the instructions over and over till you are ok with it. Patience and make sure both batteries device/laptop whatever charged up and Use XP as it makes things easy.
AND what is (are) the most common mistake(s) that will brick my device when upgrading to 6.5 (besides cutting power/usb in process)?
make sure you have the right rom !!! you ll be fine
I know some or all of the answers to these questions are out there (I've been looking), but it would be nice to have an idiot's single post to refer to for the most basic questions/answers.
I remember my first time I was totally scared !!!
i wasnt scared.
i was more scared when i realized i had a flash going on my harrier and had just popped out the battery. bricked to ****.
and 2003 is better than them. faster. and **** appcompatibility. OS speed matters more.
Yeah, there are no linux or android flashable roms... yet, but in regard to reasons to upgrade
1.smooth flick (or kinetic) scrolling basically everywhere in the operated system
2.some built in app are updated i.e. internet explorer, contacts app
3.compatibilility with newer programs, alot of newer programs wont run on 2003
4.new today screen with bigger font and new plugins
If any1 would like to add feel free to do so.
I upgraded my recent TP2 from 6.1 (Orange stock ROM) to the HTC official 6.5 after having upgraded SPL as kindly explained on the XDA sticky post. The upgrade worked pretty fine, great.
Then I got a bad feeling I could not explain at first sight, playing with my new 6.5. Kind of slower, not as reactive. I got confirmed in that feeling looking a the memory usage. I was consistently around 45% with 6.1 after having open / closed applications, and 6.5 was loading the phone at more than 70%, although I disabled direct push and played other tricks as provided by this nice forum. I am having a professional and intensive usage of my phones, this was hard to stand.
I was not able to firmly consider that I had got a much better experience with 6.1 given that I played few hours with it before upgrading to 6.5. But I was reminding a somehow much reactive environment.
I was anyhow reluctant to go back to 6.1 given all the modifications brought to the registry - that were triggering the functions I was looking for (that's one of the nice aspect of the TP2). Yesterday, I found the "Y" letter of the keyboard becoming really hard, I had to push so strongly that it was abnormal ; for sure the keyboard is defective.
From this point I decided to return under warranty. I reinstalled the stock 6.1 Orange ROM, and relocked the phone so that I could ship it back.
Guess what : I was then facing a USABLE phone, reactive, no latency, etc ...
I am convinced that for an intensive usage, and when once cannot stand to take nerves waiting for menus to pop up or down when performing an operation as simple as trying to place a call, 6.1 is definitely the best and natural fit with the TP2 engine !
Then I understand that it's fun to have some tries with newer versions of the OS, but I would not recommend it for people already stressed with their job, needing a tool instantly reacting to various actions.
Other than that, a big thanks for this forum, that's a phenomenally productive place. Keep it up !
PS - I will get my replacement TP2 in few days, and will keep with the stock ROM
Disagree
Welcome to forums
Shame to hear your experience eas not good.
On my experience leaving stock 6.1 ROM and moved to 6.5.1 was great!
More finger friendly, much better UI graphics, for mention some good points.
Of course at a cost of RAM, but hey beauty has it´s price
And we have a lot of RAM, so let´s use it
WM 6.5
I had also trouble with the new Windows mobile 6.5
With vers. 6.1 I had no difficulties in doing a VPN-Connection to my office. It was possivle to sync contacts, mails, dates and tasks.
After upgrading to wim 6.5 contacting over VPN doesn't work. The TP2 announced that there was a difficulty in device.exe. Within 3 days we cannot contact our office.
Result: Downgrade to 6.1 an all problems are solvend.

Hi, can you send me a download link for download ORANGE stock rom? And how to relock the device? i have no problem for the moment. It's just in case.

@phd32
2 words of advice. DUMP STOCK!
Stock ROMs / Official ROMS suck. Just give the NRG ROMs a try. You will be pleasantly surprised.
Build 21xxx is WM 6.5
Build 23xxx are all WM 6.5.1 with the Start Menu below and bigger finger friendly buttons.
If you are going to give NRGz 21xxx build a shot, look for the OCT28th release of the same. That is his best work on the 21xxx builds.
Others can comment about 23xxx.
I just installed EnergyROM_21864_RHODIUM_08.Nov.2009_Standard.rar
And yes, I admit that the performance of this cooked ROM is much better than the official from HTC. With eventually a better experience due to enhanced graphics amd "touch friendlier" (?) interface. Why the hell those big companies do not release something in parity ??? Hard to understand, frankly.
A simple question : my TP2 came with an AZERTY keyboard. And the mapping coming with this ROM is QUWERTY. How to trick it ?
There's no way it could be worse than TMOUS 6.1 stock.
Interesting read, though flawed. Having 45% memory usage vs 70% memory usage will NOT affect your devices speed. This is a myth that badly needs to be dispelled. The only time you will get a slowdown is when you run out of memory (i.e., 100%), and even then, your phone will automatically reclaim memory for you. Anyhow, 6.5 is way faster than 6.1, however, manila always slows things down (so don't judge the speed of your deviice by a) your perceptions, and b) manila.

EnergyROM seems to be one of the better 6.5 ROM's. Otherwise... I'm not sure what you can do, sorry. Never ran the stock ROM.
