Has anyone else experienced this problem with their P3300?
Unpredictably, the screen on my P3300 will fail to come back on after I have shut the device off with the power button. I know the device is on because the hardware buttons light up when pressed, but the screen appears almost completely dark and won't come back on when tapped. The only way to get the screen back to normal function is to get to the backlight settings and adjust them. This seems to return the device to normal function...until it randomly happens again. I'm seeing this about two or three times a day.
At first, I thought I needed to soft reset - and this worked - I then just went to the backlight settings to modify them and got back normal function for a while. The strange thing was that after the screen issue and the soft reset, my backlight settings for battery power were on "brightest" - and they wern't there before the issue popped up.
Now I have a WA2 shortcut on my top bar that goes to backlight settings. I know approximately where it is on the screen, so when the issue pops up and the screen is pitch dark, I can tap in that general area and get to backlight settings. The screen is still dark, but I can just make out the backlight slider enough to adjust it from there and avoid the soft reset.
So, basically, it seems as though my backlight settings are randomly resetting themselves to the lowest setting every once in a while after power off. Anybody else with an Artemis seeing this? Seems a little similar to the first of the three questions in this thread, but not exactly the same:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=281763
Any help or empathy would be appreciated!
I've had that, too. I assume the program for the allocation of the soft keys has a bug. You had to HARD RESET, and dont change the soft keys any more.
I've read some more about this issue and it seems it is a WM5 bug that is seen across devices. I guess I can hope they will address it at some point in a future ROM release. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Sleep Mode
What you are describing sounds like sleep mode
" Quickly pressing the POWER button turns off the display temporarily and switches your device to sleep mode. Sleep mode suspends your device to a low power state while the display is off in order to save battery power "

(Taken from MDAC3 Manual)
Pressing the power button again should bring it out of Sleep Mode. If it is getting stuck then it is possibly a bug affecting the sleep mode.
Hi!
Any news on this issue? My phone is acting just like described in this thread (and no, this is not standby/sleep mode)

This only hapen to me after a soft reset. And the only way i found to "fix" the problem was after every soft reset going to Settings>Backlight move the brightness bar up and down. And after that it never blocks the light again until the next soft reset. Sometimes when connected to usb it blocks too but if you always go to the backlight, befor e the light goes off, and move the bar it wont block anymore...Its not a real solution but the only way i found...

Yeah, that is all I am doing too. Hopefully HTC is noticing this problem too and a future ROM release will alleviate the problem. Perhaps a Crossbow upgrade someday????
I have the same problem. I found out that it happens when PhoneAlarm switches my profile from work to home.
Solution!
Check this thread out:
http://www.pocketmax.net/smf/index.php?topic=3324.0
As stated above, looks like PhoneAlarm is the culprit. I use it and I would bet that everyone posting in this thread does too. In fact, Bruce from PocketMax has even listed the Artemis Backlight corruption issue as a fixed item in his latest release, v1.57 available here:
http://www.pocketmax.net/phoneAlarm.html
Once you download and install, make sure to go the the backlight % setting in each of your profiles and select "Leave Unchanged". This alleviates the problem. My Artemis no longer goes blank without backlight slider manipulation after a soft reset!!! One less thing to worry about!
I had the same problem ... I try your solution and make a feed back
I too have had this problem and have PA installed - I'll also apply the solution and report findings . . thanks for sharing.
Hi!
I installed the PA 1.57 upgrade, but it did not help... But it seems like the backlight settings on the Artemis device is not standard, so I uninstalled Spb GPSR monitor (who has a backlight setting option), and then the problem disappeared.
PK
Looks like any program you have installed with a backlight setting option needs to be adjusted not to change the backlight settings in order for things to work properly for the time being. I'm sure that software developers will adjust to this new device soon just as PA has. Thanks for the feedback!
hi,
i have PA 1.58 (build 100), and the reminders for missed calls not work properly. the orange led is blinking, but the vibration and the sound are
not played (i have set the alarm reminder to 1 x 5 min x endless)...
please, test and indicate to me if this function works on your artemis...
the reminders for sms works fine.
thank's

In other forums they have this 'problem' too, and all of these people had SPB Pocket Plus installed. My guess is that it is a backlight setting in that program. You can temporarily get the backlight back on by connecting the phone to the pc through ActiveSync, and change the settings accordingly.
Hard- or softresets shouldn't be necessary to solve this.
@phonealarm users,
you can fix the unserious backlight bug if you are using at least v.1.57 or higher and set all backlight settings (battery and pluged) in used profiles to the option < LEAVE UNCHANGED >

happy new year!
Ok! so i am not alone! a couple of times i did face this situation. the screen doesnt come up, but the device is on, and i am able to see a slight silhoute of the icons, very very light. and i have to do a softreset to get it back on.

Yep, that´s it! In every app offering different profiles (like PocketZenPhone, PA, etc.) Settings for Backlight (including Minutes to switch off) must be exactly the same in each profile! Maybe <Leave unchanged> will work, too!

Hey Guys,
We appreciate the posts about Phone Alarm, but if you just read this entire thread before posting you would have seen that this is old news and this issue was resolved in post #9!
Thanks anyway!
Oh, and Happy New Year as well!
hi,
please, tell me if pa reminders for sms and missed calls work fine in your p3300.
i have installed spb pocket plus and pa and the reminders for pa not work now.
please, if this combination works for you, explaine your config settings.
thank's
I own my orbit since 4 month now, but just recently
I noticed that the display doesn't come up as long
as I am connected to any power source (usb/plug).
I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case from the beginning.
The display switches on as soon as I unplug power though.
I already searched the archives and tried to remove
all today plug-ins as well as softreset to no avail.
Anybody seen that before and/or knows how to get
rid of this annoyance?
Thanks in advance
Try Start > Settings > System > Backlight
There are seperate settings for the backilght depending whether its running on battery power of external power. Make sure that the "On external power" setting is not turned down to power save.
Backlight on external is 100%; backlight on battery is 70%
that should be o.k.
Thanks anyway
Have you installed SPS Pocket Plus? If so that's properbly the problem, change the backlight setting within SPB Pocket Plus and you'll be fine.
I've had that a few times - usually when the orbit has lost its activesync relationship. Backlight settings and power settings are a-ok, and only fix I've found is a rebuild
Well just in case anybody runs into the same kind of problem here is what I found. Now I nerver had SPS Pocket Plus so it didn't have to to with that.
I believe it actually has to do with what Big Kuri said regarding losing
ActiveSync relationship while backlight is off.
Well by accident I into a solution much less troublesome than a hardreset.
- with Backlight on connect the Orbit to your computer (ActiveSysnc)
- let it finisc ActiveSync connection
- with the backlight still on do a softreset no your Orbit
=> after booting up (still connected to the computer) everything was fixed
for me.

I have a Tilt 2, so does my Wife and my Father. This is the 3rd HTC device i've had (mogul, diamond). This setting should be pretty easy.
So my Dad is complaining about the screen dimming really quickly, I change the settings to 2 min. seems to work well for a while. Then he tels me it's still doing it. I check his settings and its back to 10 sec. we go through this a couple of more time, I'm thinking he is changing it and doesn't know it.
So we just turn off the dim feature (on battery) Today he says it's still doing it, we check his settings and the dim feature is turned off, still! but i saw it go dim after 7-10 secs.
Any ideas? Am i missing a setting, i have done mine and my wifes with no problems.
does he have his backlight on auto adjust?

Probably, but i have never see such a dramatic change with the auto adjust. it doesn't seem to matter how much light there is. and it's consistantly 7 to 10 seconds.
I tried the at&t "chat" help, they were worthless.
maybe try turning it off. maybe need to do a soft reset on the side of phone.
we turned it off (unchecked it) but it still dims the backlight, never seen anything like it, i will try the soft reset tomorrow. hopefully that will work!
I had the same issue...
I created a reg file to manually fix. What is happening is when the device wakes up from screen sleep or changing from external to battery power, WM6.1 changes this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\BackLight\BatteryTimeout to 8 (seconds in hex).
I used my reg file and added to my start menu (you could also assing to a hardware button if you have the right tools), and run it when the device sets it to 8 seconds. Its a couple of clicks, but less then navigating to the UI settings.
The reg file is set for 2 minutes. Edit as you wish, but keep in mind you need to convert the seconds to hex.
Send it Back!!
The AT&T folks said to send it back (its still within the 30 days) Dad also told me that the speaker sounds funny, i really didn't believe him, thought it was just "different" from his old Razor.
So we tried it i used his phone and called him using mine, dang if it didn't sound funny!
So i am on the phone getting another sent!!
Thanks for helping!
Getting a GPS-Fix can take a long time especially with an internal GPS receiver. If you are moving, it will even take longer to get the GPS-Fix, so when using a navi like TomTom you should wait for the fix (between a few seconds and more than 20 minutes) befor you start your trip. And when you switch of your phone (standby) or even when you close the application, the GPS module will shut off immediately. When you restart your application or switch on the phone you will have to wait to get a new GPS-fix. This will be quit fast but still annoying. I like to take geotagged pictures (footprints) but befor taking the first picture I have to wait a few minutes and if I don't keep my phone switched on all the time I have to wait another 20 seconds for each next picture.
As far as I know, there are two reasons for the GPS module to get switched of:
1. When short pressing power button (suspend state) or not useing the phone for a few minutes (unattended state) the GPS module gets switched off. This can be fixed quit easily by using these reg-keys (I am not sure if "GPS0:", "GPD0:" and "COM4:" are realy all needed?!). But this only helps if the program which uses the GPS module keeps on running even if the phone is in suspend because of the second reason:
2. When closing the last program which uses GPS, the GPS module gets switched off as well. With some programs you don't even have to close them. When you switch of your phone most of the programs (like TomTom) enter suspend state not using GPS anymore and the GPS module is shut off even if you use the reg-keys from above just because there is no program using GPS in that situation.
A small program together with the reg-keys should do the trick. This program should always run even if the phone is in suspend mode and it should interact with the MS GPS intermediat driver all the time to keep GPS alive.
Features:
- run as a service
The program should always run (hidden from taskmanager) but must not be active (keeping GPS alive) all the time.
- taskbar integration (WM6.5.x compatible)
There should be a symbol in the taskbar indicating the status of the program. Something like red for inactive, yellow for active/connecting and green for active with gps-fix. Pressing the icon should bring up a menu for activate, deactivate and config.
- Program to switch between active and inactive
With such a program it would be possible to switch the program state with an applauncher or via mortscript or you can map this program to a hardware-button. Maybe parameters like "on", "off" and "toggle" can be used with a shortcut?!
Nice to have:
- status led
Configure one of the phones LEDs as an indicator for this service. LED off = service inactive, LED blinking = connecting, LED on = GPS fix.
- auto off
User can choose after how many hours the service will deactivte itself (GPS is still usable but not always on).
- scheduler
Who needs GPS when sleeping or during work?
- multilingual
I could do the german translation!
- gps-tracking
The frequency and the location of the logfile should be configurable and there should be more parameters for the programswitcher: "trackon", "trackoff", "tracktoggle". The taskbaricon should indicate the status of the tracker as well.
- prevent suspend when switching off the phone
Programs like tomtom would keep on running even if you press the powerbutton and you could use it for audio-navigation. With the display shut off the power consumption should be much less.
These are just a few ideas I had when thinking about this program. I already searched the forum and found this interesting thread. It's the one with the reg-keys. If someone is willing to write this program he may find some useful information in that thread
Does such a program already exist? Isn't it a good idea? Will someone write this program?
PS: Sorry for my bad english!

Looks very promissing but I still have to do a bit more testing.
It is my understanding that some gen8 devices aren't waking up from sleep when they go to sleep in a dimmer screen state. Thanks to a diligent XDA user with a 101, I was able to fix this problem.
To fix this, download SuperDim 1.51dev2 from http://code.google.com/p/superdim/downloads/list
Then go to Menu | Options, and check "Fix no-wake-from-sleep". That's all: it should now work.
My testing indicates that low brightness levels aren't enough to switch the backlight from off to on. So what the SuperDim fix option does is that when the device awakes with a low brightness setting, it first sets 22% brightness, which is enough to activate the backlight, and only then sets the desired lower brightness level.
I reported both the bug and the fix to Archos.
It might be possible to make the fix work without root if there is enough demand.
I would very much like to have a fix without having to root my 101!
I installed and to exactly what u introduced but I still have that issue now. Im realy disappointed. Is there any other methods
yes i also tested it - but somehow i didnt see the feature while waking up - but when going to sleep - this somehow is weird and useless - might be the reason for not working for others
Sleep: press power - screen gets brighter -> get darker -> off
Wake up: press power -> wake up by luck
perhaps recontact the develoeper something might be messed up
(i didnt take the version u mentioned - but the latest maket version wich is newer)
So, let me get clearer on what's happening. You have SuperDim installed, and its "fix wake from sleep" option is activated. And you're still not having the device wake from sleep when the screen is dimmed. Right?
If you can install adb on your PC, or install an ssh daemon on your device and connect to the device via ssh from your PC, you can help me diagnose the problem.
Well I hoped my explanation was clear enough - it is what u said + the point that the function u explained in post 1 doesn't happen while waking up but instead when going to sleep...
Device is on (screen is dimmed, archos option is on) -> press power -> screen gets brighter -> screen gets darker -> off
Device is in sleep -> press power -> wake up by luck
Anyway I got ssh woring thought putty(win) and UD ssh daemon.
ADB is also installed on my pc but i nerver used it
EDIT:
hey - btw i asked u for the cycle funktion some time ago and noticed u implemented it now - and a lot of other things
Thanks for that - somehow i lost track of your app since i had exams
Anyway i just noticed i have the turn-on bug also when I don't use your app sometimes... (even when the screen is not dimmed at all) so there must be another problem also i suppose
Regarding the cycle funktion i noticed a "strange" behaviour:
"night 1" -> 3x cycle -> ends in "day 2" (thast right)
but
"night 1" -> 2x cycle -> "night 1" -> cycle -> ends in "day 2" also and not in "night 2" (so it seems u forgot to ask for the current state while cycling though the modes)
anyway I would be glad if u would make a cycle+ and a cycle-

Have you tried SuperDim, now known as RootDim, and its sleep of death fix option?
