Phone disabled after WM2k5 upgrade - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hie all,
I am new here.
I am using an XDAII which I upgraded to WM2k5 last week.
It run pretty well, stable, faster than expected.
Suddenly today, I switched it on, only to find a message on the screen that there is a problem with some program (ccprog, cant remember exactly what it was).
With that, the phone functionality was gone.
Many other programmes are not running as well, (like contacts, calendar, xbackup).
As it is now, I am just remaining with Word Mobile, Excel, but that defeats the purpose of having an XDA.
Let me know if you have met this before, and how I can sort it out.
Thanks

So we can bring on WM6 - but why?

Hi all
I just got myself sent a Hermes the other day and I was looking around here, my favourite XDA resource, for nifty things I could do with it. One thing that seems to be all the rage is upgrading to WM6. Now, I'm all in favour of upgrading and the amount of information and material here is, well, staggering. Overwhelming even. But, for all I read, I miss one critical thing: why do we upgrade to WM6? What does it give us that WM5 doesn't?
All I see, at the moment, is a swankier interface and a faster operation. But neither of those are big sellers in themselves and don't justify the bricking and incompatibility risks. So, what's the big appeal that I've missed? I guess I'm looking for an excuse to do this
Lastly, as I mentioned, there's almost too much information about all this. i can follow the guides and tools for installation but one thing will vex me if I was to upgrade - and that's which ROM to use. Now I'm certain every one of you has a favourite and so I'm not looking for a definitive recommendation, but what the hot ones that I should look into at the moment? As I see it, the "XDA Live" and "Black" see pretty popular..
Cheers!
Three reasons for me.
1. TomTom doesn't occassionally freeze
2. Easier to set as a modem
3. More responsive menus, button presses, etc
By the way WM6 is more like WM5 second edition rather than a brand new system.

Pretty much says it all. I never soft reset anymore. More memory, faster than WM5, better tweaks, and has some things WM5 didn't cooked in to the ROM. As for the risk of bricking, that's an extremely low risk, very minimal actually, if you follow the guide and wiki.
and html email is not to be sneezed at.
Because we can!
Mobile Office 2k7 can read o2k7 native formats. You will never see this on WM5 unless some imgfs God with a lot of time on his/her hands ports it there....
Native SD card encryption is Huge. The A2DP stack is a thing of wonder too....

exactly!!!!!!!!
My softbank x01ht came with WM5 and the only upgrade I did was the radio upgrade to 1.40.
May be it is my luck, but my x01ht seems really stable in its original ROM version (WM5 aku 2), I have never hard reset and the machine seems really stable. So my need to upgrade to WM6 to avoid system hang is not really existing.
Also, I use a lot of BUILT-IN functions such as Push Email, Wifi and Chinese support (my x01ht was flashed with a Hong Kong version 838 pro ROM before sold to me). If ANY one of such functions is WORSE in WM6 than in WM5, than WM6 is a no no for me. I can't stand any frequent freeze of the x01ht because I now depend solely on it for my daily phone/PIM use. If I don't have it working 100% normal, then I will lose many important phone calls.
I see WM6 really as an evolution of WM5. In WM6, MS has fixed many bugs that were in WM5, for example:
- Crappy A2DP
- WiFi now supports WPA
- HTML email
- Faster and more stable
- I'm sure MS has updated little things here and there to make WM6 more telco-standards (GSM, etc.) compliant
Well, are you still using Windows 95 on your PC?
My reasons for upgrading have been for (in order of importance) the speed, bug fixes, better memory management, the X button actually closing the app not just minimising it, Office updates, better compatibility and usability in the new Internet Explorer, etc.
When I bought my TyTN I was shocked by how slowly it responded to user input compared to previous Pocket PCs I'd owned.
After the developments that started occurring here a few months ago, there really was no turning back. I upgraded and now the OS is quick and very responsive. WM6 has been a godsend. The phone application also doesn't take 3-4 seconds to load when I press the call button to answer a call like it used to!
WM6 also has a much more polished look to it I think.
hold on, TomTom still freezes on mine with WM6 !
I still love it though (tomtom that is and wm6)
Let me know if this is solved will ya ?
ta
bb
I did it simply because WM5 was a little unstable and I love experimenting / playing with stuff like this.
A side benefit which I didn't know I would get is the LVSW version that I installed allows WPA2 & WPA2-PSK authentication on the Wi-Fi. That meant I could run my Hermes at the same security as my network and didn't have to modify my wireless router and other PCs.
There's probably still a few other good reasons that haven't been mentioned in this thread yet.
Cheers, Oggy.
Bug fixing, more speed,...
With WM5 I had issues like the phone applicatoin reacted too slowy on an incomming call. so i missed the call. Or sometimes it even didn't ring.
WM6 works in that point.

Did you install TomTom 6.03??? As of that version I never had freezes anymore...
I to have tomtom lockup and sloooooowwwww to get map directions. Please I miss my fast tomtom 6. I am using 6.03. I wonder if i did something wrong. I never had this problem with wm5.
What about support?
One benefit of wm6 is that the hackers, tweakers, rom cookers, and random slackers such as myself keep this hermes wm6 forum active (albeit sometimes unforgiving to newcomers). If you have a question about wm6 on a hermes, it is probably already answered here. Can as much be said for the wm5 forums?
Just works
Personally I was about to ditch my TyTN. The default OS was infuriatingly slow, buggy, and had me resetting several times per day. If I hadn't stumbled upon XDA-develoopers and started flashing WM6, I would probably be a Nokia user again... WM6 just works. I've flashed maybe 10 different versions now, also the radio, and it's completely worth it. No big risk of bricking if you do your homework first.

I don't think anyone with half a brain has bricked their phone doing an OS only upgrade (especially if they read the wiki etc etc)... and you answered your own question... who doesnt want a faster device?

I feel the same way as LazPL in that I was about to stop using the phone.
What I hated most about WM5 was a lack of real integration between the phone and contacts funtions, eg.:
. If you chose a call from the recent call list you could not access the contact directly (eg. if you just tried calling someone on their fixed line and wanted to try their mobile, you could not just click on the recent call you just made and select a different type of number, you had to select the name again from the list). In WM6 you can do this
. If you saved an unknown number from your recent call list it would automatically create a new contact, instead of giving you the option to save it in an existing contact (and choosing what type of number it was) or creating a new contact. In WM6 you can.
For me these 2 were just basic everyday usability features that I can find in the cheapest phones, and totally unacceptable to be missing in a €600 device. On the basis of these 2 alone, upgrading to WM6 was worth it.
In addition, my original Orange ROM had some bugs that were just pathetic (although these could have been cured with a newer ROM, or perhaps were due to the original radio ROM - which I also upgraded - and not the OS):
. Calls to busy numbers started blaring the busy tone through the loudspeaker (very loud)
. Trying to answer a call waiting would freeze the phone and require a soft reset
Hope that helps.
Pastings WIFI keys!!!
I've not been able to paste a wifi key in my WM05 ROM somone told me it was security...
rubish i think M$ to implement the copy/paste code.
Modem -> Bluetooth PAN is HUGELY more stable, my connection used to drop all the time in modem mode, i can now sit for 2 hours on my laptop at coffee shops and surf the web, whithout paying silly 1 day WIFI pass prices!

Strange Majik Problems

Strange things are happening all day today, I had majik installed since friday. Today my bleutooth jsut turns of and I cant use the head-set. Then programs like messaging froze, I was able to close it, but still IE froze and stuff like that, any one else expirencing things like this ?

Ive been SRing all day! Mines been freezing on my telenav and sirius. Just started to do this today. Has been fine since Friday as well.
Yeah, same here. I have to do a SR every time I get in my car
Looks like I'll be installing something else on it...
I have been having IE problems connecting, Bluetooth not connecting, 3G freezing. Must be a bad day for Majik.
Well well I`m not alone on this, well vp3G here I come.
I am having this problem as well, what worse is that I am away from my PC for 32 days! on business in boston and all I have is a mac, even worse is that Igo keeps losing GPS whenever it shuts off Bluetooth, isn't there a registry hack that enables power-save on BT, I think I enabled that before and had a similar problem in WM5

Oh man I feel for you. I`m not sure about pwersetting for b, but it would make sense to me.
Had many problems with Majik yesterday so I tried 3 other roms. Not one would give me 3G sitting here in my office as majik had done. Flashed back to Majik and is working very well. I guess vevery week reflash
People, the root of nearly 70% of problems stems from 3rd party apps and NOT the ROM......
suggest you guys test it out with no apps installed and you will see the ROM is solid.
anything with 'spb' in the title should be left at arms length.
Anything like phonealarm etc... that claim to support WM6 really are only going on beta testers...remember the releases we are using are VERY new
Had nothing spb installed. The biggest issue is the BT disconnecting all the time. And the phone frezing.

I've got 5 8525's running this Majik and only one has "freezing" issues... and he had these same issues with his Wizard. 2 POP3 email accounts being polled every 30 minutes, Exchange 2003 push and 140 plus reminders MIGHT have something to do with it <sigh>
Battery life is incredible, speed is great when one adjusts the glyphcache.
As with you, my biggest complaint is with the BT dropping the call to the device but then I can bring it back up… seems to happen mostly on my initial outgoing call….
Again, respect to the chefs, this is a bad ass ROM.
Peace, out.
Hi Guys
I have been running LVSW 20070423 since it was released. Yesterday i decided to give Majik a go. All i can say it is terribly slow. Even clean ROM without applicvations. Could only stand it for 30min and then i reflashed LVSW back. The other thing is default coulors, i could hardly see my screen when outside. Dialer is crap, i like native WM6 dialer when you can type a few letters and then hide the dialpad. In Majik there are 4 lines only and if you have a lot of contacts it is a real pain to scroll through.
No good for me at all.
Will stick with LVSW ROM until the official release.
I have installed, Sirius, Voice Commander, Adobe, Live Search, WLM 1400, and esmertec. I tweaked the performance myself and set up mms and MEdia net and ISP/WAP settings myself. After I reinstalled Majik I have had no problems. I think that those problems came from WLM and IE because of the IPhone owners taking up my bandwidth
Note....Everybody that had problems was the same day they released the IPhone and we are all on AT&T

Second Flash
I think I had a bad flash the first time around.
I reflashed yesterday and the speed problems have dissapeared.
I was waiting +/- 20 seconds for /windows to open using file explorer.
That's all gone now and the ROM is pretty nippy and stable so far for my application.
But I do feel that all the extras trying to mimic the "Touch" ROM will have an effect on the speed and maybe stability.
That's why is still flash a different ROM every week or so.
To date Sleuth seems to have the combo nearly right.
LVSW cooked up fantastic ROM's, but he seems to be playing with his ELF now. - a bummer for us Hermes users.
Majick slowishness
I've found that installing the video dialler (3 cab files) dramatically slows down the Majick rom. I thought I was imagining things so I hard reset and repeated the excersise a couple of times with the same effect.
I leave the video dialler off now. I can't think of a time that I've ever used it although I do obsess about having a feature on my phone that I can't use even though I never use it.
Although Majick is an excellent ROM I did find the current LSVW was a bit quicker. The HSDPA problem in this ROM meant that it was a no-goer for me though.
I'm not complaining you understand, I'm very grateful for all the work people have done to get me WM6 on my phone!
only problem i have with majic so far is that when I add the new internet 3G connection, my username and password never seems to get saved no matter after how long. i have tried to both soft reset and power off, but still the 3G username/password never gets saved. anyone have any ideas on this?

Upgrade with a few problems....

Hi Folks
My Hermes/Tytn is an Orange M3100. Recently it has begun dropping calls, or rather, ignoring them. The caller could hear a ringing tone but the phone wouldn't switch on, show me an incomming call or anything. A short while later, usually after I'd switched it on (I mean, the screen, "off" is that it's on standby) I'd get the notification of a missed call. More often than not it would come through after I had made a call.
This reached a "point" on the weekend where I missed about 17 calls from the Agency to get work for me as I was the only one available
So. I upgraded as reccomended on here. Up to HardSPL 2.10, Radio version 1.41 and then upgraded to Schaps 4.22 WM6 Rom.
Now, I made sure that ActiveSync has connected and synchronised, and all my contacts and PIM info is in Outlook. However, A/S won't transmit the information to the PDA, even though it tells me it's synchronising.
The only way I have managed to get my PIM data/address book back onto the PDA was by running a custom SPB backup file to restore the calender, sms and phonebook.
This is where the fun starts. My PIM and Tasks then go "read only" merely by having a warning telling me I have no memory and to go and close other programs down. But there isn't anything else running!
Fine. Right. Ok. Obviously I've done something wrong. I did a hard reset this evening. It wiped all the data internally and reset it. I changed the details to match the username that was already stored in A/S and plugged it in.
It tells me "Connecting" and the green thing swirls around but doesn't actually do anything.
I have heard mention of the MTTY software, so I've got that here. But it won't allow me to connect on USB, only Com1, 2 or 3.
So I've a pretty useless phone at the moment. It's got none of my files on there, the satnav is rendered useless merely because I can't install the sod and all the other problems to go with it.
Short of screaming abuse at it and throwing it across the room I'm a bit stuffed. And I can't spend anymore time on it as I've got to be getting up for work at 4am (only finished tonight at 8pm ) for another full day
I've read the wiki, I've gone through the pages and pages and, er, pages of posts but I'm hitting a brick wall somewhere. I'm not as bright as you guys, but I get by.
TIA. Elwyn

Try disabling the enhanced feature in your usb to pc settings on the device. Also try removing and reinstalling activesync, I have to do mine roughly once every fortnight or so and I'm on the latest build of AS4.5

Ok, as the first reply said, YES. The USB advanced thingy was checked. Once that was sorted then it sync'd. I still couldn't write to the PIM/Messaging/Phonebook but I could get it backed up. Once that was done I did a hard reset, then before I plugged the "fresh" install into the computer I set up the variety of settings (machine name, usb advanced, name etc) THEN plugged it in. System recognised it, and then proceeeded to "restore" the relevant details of my PIM/Addressbook/Messages.
I think the restore from SPB was being written to a part of the memory that it wasn't supposed to. Either way, I've stopped using SPB Backup now.
The phone works well. I've even got all the SatNav software installed and working on it. The installation from the memory card didn't take that long, once it was working propperly. Which was good as I did all of that "out on the road" away from the computer (I was in the passsenger seat then).
The only issue I have noticed now is that the battery seems to go quick...
Anyway, thank you for your help. I can now go and have some xmas shopping to relax with....
Cheers
Elwyn
Glad to hear you got it working, for backing up your contacts, messages etc I'd recommend PPCPimBackup, if you do a google you should be able to find it easy enough.
Have a good Christmas.

Another Verizon GPS help thread plus a Pandora question

From what I've gathered reading about the GPS problems on XV6900's with Verizon....you might need to know the history of my ROM's.
1. I got the phone brand new 3 weeks ago and of course it came with 6.0 out of the box.
2. I installed the newest Verizon 6.1 ROM w/ radio 3.37.78
3. I then installed NFSFAN's 6.5 v7 ROM
4. I installed "NFSFAN Verizon GPS Registry.cab"
So for starters my GPS does not ever connect. I don't even know where to start. I've been searching and reading on here for 4 hours this morning and about 5 hours before bed last night. I just got really confused. Lots of what I found was regarding an older Verizon 6.1 update, so I'm not sure any of that was applicable to me. Please point me in the right direction so I can start using Google Maps. Thanks in advance!
Now Pandora.....I have installed the pandora app that I found in the NSFFAN's 6.5 FAQ thread. Well it installed fine, but when it asks for my email and password there is no where to input them. The screen is just solid blue and at the bottom says "Back" and "Sign In". I changed my hardware button to bring up a keyboard thinking that might help, but no such luck. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it once already. Once again thanks in advance!

Alright, I realize it sucks when there is a new thread every week about this, but there is also a ton of old information on this site and it makes finding an answer very hard and even when I think I know what to do I look at the thread date and it's over a year old....and thus refering to an old Verizon ROM. Obviously the answer in on this site somewhere I just need someone to point me to the most recent solution that also correlates with my ROM history and problem. If I have to I'll paypal someone $5 if they can get my GPS working.
I haven't seen anyone have the problem I'm having with Pandora. Has anyone had this issue? Am I actually alone on this one? Are there any other native Pandora program options?

For the first time you open pandora,
open the keyboard before you open pandora,
it should stay open.
it's a problem with pandora itself.
also it seems to not be working correctly with 6.5 as of right now.
I put it on there for others to test for me,
but everyone is reporting it is a no go.
:/
hopefully pandora will release a update asap.
Also, gps issue,
verizon is blocking ip's or something like that,
therefore everything people are doing to make gps work,
is more of a work around.
And I'm sure verizon will figure out a way to counteract those as they are crafty son's of b*tches when it comes to people unlocking stuff they want locked down.

New T-Mobile WM 6.5 COMPLETE FAIL (or may be not?)

IDK why, but since I have installed the new ROM released by T-Mobile, my phone is nothing but trouble. My text messages are really slow. Once I click the "All Messages" tab and I click on a conversation it needs 10 seconds to load it. Then if I try to go back, the phone freezes and the only way to unfreeze it is to soft reset it.
Then the Wi-Fi sharing doesnt work. I installed it but there is no trace of it in the whole phone.
The phone it self is slow. After a reset needs few mins (up to 10) to load that little quick menu that is located on the top right corner of the screen. No matter what I want to do it needs a sh*t load of time to do it.
It annoys the f*ck out of me, does someone else have the same problems with this ROM?
I apologize for the swears but I am really annoyed by this THING and I want to go back to the stock 6.1 or a cooked ROM.
BTW when I tried to download the HARDSPL from the forum, my anti-virus told me that there is a trojan in it.
P.S. I just saw that it doesnt show me the notification for new SMS, also I have the annoying (1) on the SMS icon in the HTC Sence. I know I can fix it with the fix that is given in the forum, im just saying... Is that a bug that should still be there? I am disappointed with WM, the 6.5 has more problems than the 6.1...
I've noticed when upgrading to vzw 6.5 my phone was slow too. I stuck with it for a couple days and gave up all hope. I'm now on MightyRom and occasionally load up SPB mobile shell. Mobile shell requires more frequent restarts (every other day). The mightyrom is mad stable and hasn't given me problems (you can't use mightyrom it is cdma only, I suggest pheonix or valkryie for you).
HardSPL is not a trojan if you download it from this site or ppc geeks, no need to worry on that end (i'm running business class vipre and malwarebytes professional).
I was running McAfee.
Can you give me a link for the HardSPL? Ill be looking for a cooked rom, but that will be when I am home. Anyway, Ill have another post in this topic soon, since I just did a hard reset and I want to see if it gives me the same problems, but so far is still slow and I don't give it much hope...

you should install nopushinternet and ssk dynamic resource proxy cabs, those will help out immensely with some of that device lag. ( http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=1295157&postcount=2 )

Personally I don't like McAfee or any of those bundled suites that dell/hp/gateway/etc include. Kaspersky, Vipre, ESET, BitDefender are all better IMO.
Downloaded it. It showed improovement right away just like you said.
Also downloaded HardSPL, McAfee shows no trojans. I will look for the ROMs you recomended and ill get back to the topic soon.
I'm not getting the same problems with the 6.5 update. It might be the other programs that you're running in addition to the update. I don't get the Quick Menu delay. Wifi sharing has been working.
Hard-SPL has NO trojans! This has to do with how they packed the file. For some reason, security programs have issues with it. Just completely disable all your security for a little bit and install it, no trojan.
I have no problems with my 6.5 update. Maybe you should try hard reseting your phone or flashing the software again.
Seeing as it has been way over a month since this was released and beyond your load voice, there have been few if any complaints, I'm doubting this update was a complete fail. As such your topic heading is WRONG.
And tell us what steps you took in flashing the update, was it a success. How did you restore your data to the device? Is it possible that your restore of text messages corrupted the device somehow (faulty backup/restore software?).
Again, I would hard reset/reflash the device. Load no software or backups and see how your text messages are.
I upgraded to Tmo 6.5 the night I got my phone, so I can't comment on the 15 mins I used 6.1 for. But all I know is that after 6.5 it was like getting the phone all over again. Everything worked perfectly, then I started getting stuff off these forums. While 98% of all the cabs and apps work great, and work flawlessly on the system, there's been a handful that haven't. I've down the "Clear Storage" 5 times since yesterday b/c I think I have finally developed a plan..
All I can say is that the swype 3.9 keyboard totally killed my phone, had to do sys restore for that (twice b/c I thought it was something else before I read that thread) I've tried all the WiFi Sharing cabs, and the only one that works is AssasinsLament 'slotted' cabs. Just chose any number of those and it will show up in your start menu, however, never your CommManager. SoftKey manager doesn't work (or anything to change the softkeys b/c TF3d overrides it no matter what)
Why would I want no-push-internet? I always want my phone to be connected, or am I missing something? I don't use exchange, and its off in my CommMgr, do I still need a cab??
but yeah, I don't think this rom is FAIL, if anything, I hope they release 6.5.3 w/ Sense 2.5 if they aren't going to give us our WPS7..that would be nice. But yeah, back to my plan, I never want to use a cooked ROM, not that I don't trust anyone, but its just damn scary and don't want to miss out on any stock features, so I just created a directory on my PC HDD called "Good Roms" once I determine which work the best, they will be there, I'll do one final Clear Storage and get it rocking!
I actually agree with him. tmo 6.5 update felt like the device was running through mud. everything was slow, scrolling, loading programs etc. the memory usage was too high as well; why anyone would want 66% of their resources dedicated to running eye candy is beyond me. the speed was fixed, for me, by installing cell pro and or cell evo roms. that guys roms are insane stable and fast. however the problem, again, was the memory usage which is a symptom of sense 2.1 or higher (dont get me started on sense 2.5). his roms were awesome but running multiple programs almost became impossible. i could open opera 9.7 and maybe one other program in the background. if i tried more than that i ran into memory issues. i like having my most commonly used programs loaded and ready to go. couldnt do that with any sense 2.1 roms. when I reverted back to stock 6.1 tf3d 2.1 every thing was fixed: speed and memory. now i can have opera open in the background (usually 4-5 tabs open) mylifeorganized, pocket informant, pocket player, newsbreak, email, pocket quicken, and excel. even with all that open in the background I am around 65% memory consumed, a full 1% less than sense 2.1 allows by itself.
what would be nice is wm 6.5 or 6.5.x with tf3d. small footprint interface and a userfriendly os.
I have to agree with the OP. I did the 6.5 update and immediately regretted it. Thank goodness cdguider posted a 6.1 for back up!!
Programs that worked well in 6.1 became glitchy in 6.5. It was slower than molasses, and I dropped calls and missed text messages.
As with ALL roms, it is a matter of personal taste. I went back to 6.1 and have been a happy camper. For me it seems to be the more stable and reliable rom...and I tried MANY, stock and cooked. 6.1 just works better with the applications that I NEED. I like the eye candy of 6.5, but eye candy isn't worth it if it doesn't run the way I need it to.
I had a Wizard for many years and was a rom flashing fiend. While I have tried many cooked roms here, the stock 6.1 seems to be the best fit. This is not a fault of the great Rhodium chefs, but rather, I believe, fault with WinMo/Manilla/Sense and whatever else is frankenstein'd into 6.5 roms.
same here. 6.5 has been a disaster from day one. i am going back to 6.1 .i soft reset 10+ times a day just so my phone does not grind to a hault. gwes.exe is a system program and is the problem, its just no one can fix it
I did do the flash correctly. I did it exactly as the tmo web site said. Also, I have done hard reset and I have done the flash again... no help. Now im running fireSTORM_LEO-v6 WWE, and my phone is a whole new thing. No lag, no freezing. Of course there are some things I dont like about this ROM but its all cosmetic, and im sure there are cabs out there that can help. Also, somebody said that it might be the programs I am running or the text messages and data that I have on the phone. No it is not that because the phone was giving me problems even before I restored the data on the phone.
Thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts. I will rename the topic since its obviously not a complete fail.
