Am I making a mistake? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Accessories

I have been carrying the JJ around without a case now for over a week. It fits perfect in my shorts pocket, jeans pocket and in my suit coat so I just go without the case. I have the unit closed so the screen is protected and I am careful to not put keys or coins in the same pocket.
Do you think the JJ will hold up without becoming worn looking? Is anyone else doing the same thing?
I have had a ton of pda's, Palm, Sony, HP, Imate and I have always used a case but until I see one that doesnt add so much thickness to the unit I plan on just carrying it without a case. I hope I am not making a mistake. If the screen wasnt covered I would not be debating this.
BTW, I have a proporta case, very similar to the one sold for the JJ, I bought it for my old HP 6315 and it is nice and well made but THICK and adds way to much to any PDA. I hope Vaja makes a thin case but unfortunately it seems they do not make super thin cases anymore. They did years ago for the Sony Clie that had a rotating screen. It was great but more recent cases by them for example for my Ipod is too thick in my opinion.
Interested to hear your thoughts.
Darrin

I think it is a mistake. After the case for my previous pda broke I carried it without a case for a while, and a lot of accidents happened.
First of all, things fall out of pockets. Ok, if you have the right kind of pocket on a garment that is the right kind of fit, it may not in all likelihood, but with a $1000 gadget, I am not taking a chance.
Second, I always find things in pockets get banged around more. Things attached firmly to my belt don't.
When sitting down, it is hard to take it out of the pocket. So, you may decide to take it out before you site down and put it on the table. Then you are likely to forget it, or just go get a napkin at the Starbucks for 2 seconds. Sometimes it takes only 2 seconds.
Without a proper and definite place to put it (like a case on your belt) you are likely to put it in this pocket or that pocket one time or another. Just put it in your shirt pocket for a minute as you are gathering your things to get out, then bend over to tie your shoes. Happened to me more than once (although I still believe it was a subconscious attempt to break the old one to justify the new one).
I also think the proporta (or PDAir, or some other names, they all seem to be the same) book case is clumsy and thick, so I got the pouch case until a better choice comes out. Vaja is bound to make one.

Thanks for your thoughts, you make a lot of sense. I agree a lot of accidents can happen since its not attached to my belt in a case.
I would love to see more pics of the pouch case you mention. Are there any on the internet? Once you receive it I would love to hear what you think about it.
Darrin

This is the info about the case:
http://pdaden.com/shop/cart.php?target=product&action=view&product_id=17394&substring=jasjar
As you see it is the same case Proporta is selling, and is made by PDAir.
Someone posted pictures of their proporta case, and it said PDair on it too. So I am sure they are all the same case, but this one is half price.
They are shipping from HK, and charged me $8 to mail it to US.

Great, thank you for the link. I had only seen one picture of the case, that looks perfect. Lot of pics to really see case. I purchased some other cases from that retailer in the past. I was already registered.
I ordered one. Thanks again. This case looks like the best choice for now, maybe can be only case. Fits so close to body in picture, not even noticeable under a shirt or suit jacket.
Darrin

Haven’t ordered mine yet but when I do, its naked for me
I have had and XDA II for just over a year now and apart from a screen protector it went naked too. I work in an office so it lives on my desk all day. I try to be careful not to put keys in the same pocket when travelling but I don’t get paranoid about it. If it scratches, oh well, it will get replaced as soon as something better comes along

Piel Frama launch Jasjar Case

See http://www.pielframa.com/promo_jasjar.htm
Only problem is that it would appear there is no belt clip
Nice!!
That's the first good case I've seen!
Looks professional and easy to use. Its a bit expensive to order it yet.
But that's the case I'm going to get for my MDA Pro
The missing belt-clip makes this case useless for me .. i want one with a belt clip !!!
- Superbowl
A beltclip is necessary for me, too. Without this function the standard MDA Pro case is OK with me. I think a case like the standard for the magician would be perfect for me - belt clip an quick release...
looks awesome, dunno that i'd trust having the pda open and the cover shut as those storage cards in the case get a tad close to the screen for my liking!
Flubster
There is not any plan at piel frama to add belt clip , i sent an e-mail to piel frama & they reply :
Regarding the belt clip, we have to inform you that due to the weight of the device and the design of the case, we cannot instal a belt clip on this new leather case. The clip would not stand the weight of the device on the belt. Besides, if we would instal a belt clip on the case, the functionality of the case would not be the intended one as the user would not be able to use the device with the belt clip on it.
We are sure that you will understand this situation and will agree that the belt clip is not a good idea for this model.
Please, do not hesitate to contact us if you need further assistance.
Very best regards and have a nice day!!
I just bought the Piel Frama case. The leather feels good but there is one design flaw. It has a strip of leather on top of the keyboard. With it my PDA cannot close properly. I am so afraid to damage the hinges on my new toy. If you have any ideas to modify this problem please let me know.
If anybody wants to buy my Piel Frama case for JASJAR please let me know. I live in Hong Kong

You can cut the strip on top, near costures... I have one and no damage on JJ...
I am also very tempted to cut the strip of leather. But I was thinking if you do, after awhile the whole JASJAR might just fall out. Its really a pain to see such a nice case go to waste.
I was going to cut the leather strip as well. It does not seem like this is really what is holding it in so there would not be much harm in cutting it so that the device could fully close.
Can someone who did this post pics and say if it makes an improvement?
Cutting the case
Why are you guys cutting the case? Pielframa should replace the faulty cases. In the past they have replaced cases whithout the need to send back your faulty cases. Most people buy them from outside Spain. Sending it back internationally could be a pain. In the past when they released the first batch of the ipaq iPAQ H6340 cases, these cases were also faulty (it does not fit well). They did not recall the cases, but replaced them.
By the way the Pielframa issue is also mentioned on another thread. See
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=183962#183962
Maybe they've changed their policies on replacements. As you stated, I don't want to mess with a 2-3 week turnaround from sending from the USA and back to Spain.
Here is what I got from Piel Frama:
Thank you very much for your email and for your kind words about our products.
We are sorry to hear that you are having problems with the case. In fact, some of our customers have informed us that they are having some problems to close the device. Our craftsmen have been thinking about it and they have thought about a solution which would be to take the thin strap over the keyboard from the case so that the problem will be solved and the device will close without problems.
So that, we would ask you to ship the case back to us by regular mail and we would modify it the case. Our postal address is the following one:
PIEL FRAMA
Avda. Fuente San Francisco S/Nº
P. I. "LA PIEL"
11600 Ubrique (Cádiz)
Spain
Once we get it, we will make this modification in the case and we will ship it back to you.
If its a matter of just cutting out the back leather strip, I can do that myself instead of dealing with a 2-3 week turnaround not to mention the mailing costs in addition to costs that I've already paid, to mail it to them.
It is not very customer friendly. Pielframe cases are certainly not cheap. A standard (i.e. not crocodile or ostrich) Jasjar case cost at least 70 euro's about 87 $. So we should expect good quality and good working cases. If a case is faulty which could damage the jasjar / MDA Pro then they are liable for that. So having customers to spend more money (time and shipping cost) to have it fix does not really make sense.
My Piel Frama case just arrived this morning (ordered on 2 Nov.). I was excitied because my normally they have great products. The leather is nice, but I have to report the problem mentioned above is worse than I imagined.
With my case, the leather strap across the top of the keyboard prevents the screen from closing by about 8mm!
I can not even snap-close the case because the screen sticks up so high --even if I apply pressure.
So, my case is completely unusable. I wonder if they had real Universal units during the design process, or if they just worked form published specs.
Back to Piel Frama.
I was visiting Piel Frama Factory. They have an I-Mate JASJAS to probe the cases. I have a cocodrile leather case and my JASJAR close well. You can see my blog (click in my firm or www) ... and will see, in last picture, the Piel Frama's JasJar.
Have Fun
my word of advice is don't use the case unless you do something about it. after 2 days of using my piel frama case I removed it and notice that the hinge is quite loose. previously the joints were tight, right now when I move the screen portion there is a clicking sound and it is coming from the joints. piel frama case has damaged my toy instead of protecting it. I just cut away the top portion leather that is above the keyboard. I don't care about sending it back, anyway what can they do when the design itself is flawed.
I did expect a little more than just "send the case back to us", but I guess that is the way customer service has gotten these days. Fortunately, I purchased my case from a reseller in the US and only paid $54 but still expected better from Piel Frama.
This bad press isn't going to be helping them sell many cases, because most of us hear about these things through forums such as this one.
Does cutting away the back leather strap appear to make a difference when closing the Universal now? I'm ready to start hacking mine!
yes , cutting it off does help quite bit, its much better now. however it will not completely close because there are still 2 more pieces of leather at the side. what I did was that I used a clamp for about 15 mins both sides. it looks ok much better than before. a few guys on this forum has also done so. afterall the machin is more precious than the case

Hmm ... cutting the back stip off lowers the lid just a little. Cosmetically, the appearance is nicer with the strap. There's still some pressure on the back hinge when you snap the case closed. But, it looks to me like the top lid of the jj is flexing a little and like closing the lid is depressing the remaining leather on the sides that's causing problems. This pressure on the lid bothers me, but I'm not sure it will damage the hinge on my jj. I'm going to think about this more before deciding whether to return it to Frama.
I had, and still have, a slight clicking sound when closing the lid. This clicking sound isn't there at all if I pull the lid closed from the right side. But, it is there if I pull the lid closed from the left side. The swivel mechanism is rotated slightly counterclockwise and that is why right vs. left side pulling down of the lid causes no clicking vs. clicking.
This is not to say that the Frama case couldn't cause hinge problems for some. I don't think it would for me ... but I'm reluctant to snap the case shut now until I investigate further.

How do you carry your Universal?

I quite close to selling my Universal as i'm having problem carryng it. Cant find a case slim enoug to attach to my belt, the ones out in the market are just to chunky. And if i keep the PDA in my pocket it sticks out.
I've just bought a slim leather case for my O2 Exec from Noreve ( www.noreve.com ) that I'm very pleased with. It has a rather good belt attachment too. Comes in grey or black and costs €39.99.
Here's the link for the Universal case: http://www.noreve.com/brand/Qtek/pr...TC_universal_-_i-Mate_Jasjar_Tradition_-.html
You can also take a look at some other cases for the Universal at, for example, www.addonsworld.co.uk
G
The universal is a clamshell device. It does not need a case. I just close it an pop it in my pants pocket. That way its smaller than my old device, the Loox 720, in its thin slip case.
Try it for a few days without a case. You will be amazed.
Surur
I carry my Universal in my hands very carefully like a priest would his bible.
When I wear a belt, I put my V1640 in its Proporta case and attach it to my belt clip on my belt.
If I don't wear a belt, I put the V1640 in its original leather case and then in my pocket. I might do what surur does though.
If I just go for a simple walk, I carry it on a padded belt pouch. If I am at the gym, I carry it using a semi-hard case made for the NINTENDO DS which I bought for $2.95 at Radio Shack.
I would not recommend to put any Pocketpc in the pockets of your trousers. All devices are made of plastic, which is bending. Because of this, the device will bend when you move and after some time (approx. 4-6 months) it will produce errors, which are hardware related.
I bought an universal leather belt case from pielframa, which is perfect for the universal.
I got my Universal as a replacement for a Ipaq H5550, and i've found the old leather case for the Ipaq is almost perfect for the Universal. [Even with extended battery] The leather is better quaility and has more padding than the Universals case, yet it doesn't fell bulky, plus it also has a bulit-in belt clip and SD card holder.
I have to remove the Universal from the case to use it [no BT headset yet], but I had to do that with the Ipaq. So thats not a problem for me. :?

LOL Excellent !
I personnaly use a Krussel case, and I especially like the keyboard cover that protects my beloved Universal when I surf AND eat Nutella...
The Universal is either at my belt (at the crook of my back when I wear a suit, it is practically invisible), or in my case, since I have my tiny Jabra BT-800 in my pocket to answer calls...

where did you buy the krussel case with keyboard cover? can you fully close the universal with it? i saw a brando case with keyboard protection but the cover was too thick and it wouldn't close fully when i triedit...
thanks!
Hi there
Yes, I can fully close the Universal as the plastic cover, while being astoninshingly strong and resilient, is thinner than the pads on the lower corners of the keyboard. It doesn't get scratched either, it fits almost perfectly the shape of the Universal and almost nothing manages to slip under it. Finally, it doesn't change the "feel" of the Universal's keys, so the keyboard still is very fast to use, and still feels as good as when it is naked.
All in all a great case, the only way to improve it IMHO would have been to make it a two-pieces, independant set, with one for the keyboard base and the other for the swivel screen, but the downside to that would have been that the Uni would have received much less protection. So I'm very satisfied with it, especially when I see how cheap it is compared to Covertec / Noreve stuff.
One last thing to say is that it is also surprisingly durable: leather is still in prime shape, there are no deformations whatsoever, even though I've used it 24/7 for the past 6 months.
I saw the Brando you're refering to, I think, and I exactly know what you mean. No such thing with the Krussel.
I personnally bought it from a french web-shop called Kabiloo (excellent service, I'd recommend: www.kabiloo.com), for 25 €. But I saw it on many other european web-shops, such as expansys: http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=127398 . I didn't find any hungarian resellers though...

hi, this sounds great!!
i checked out the links. isn't this krusell the same as here: http://www.addonsworld.co.uk/product.php/28415/3340/
i've actually been considering the addonsworld one, but had no idea it included the keyboard cover!
so do you think it is the same? i'm going to order this from there then, they will ship here.. and expansys says not in stock.. (availability 7 days.. sure.. i don't trust expansys )
thanks again, you helped a lot i was really uncomfortable not being able to decide which case to get.. but i liked the krusell one the best even before reading your post.
Hehe, yep, that's te one I was indeed talking about.
It's probably not as "classy" as a NoReve, for sure, but it clearly is IMHO the most practical, with the best quality / price, I've seen around.

hehe, cool, thanks, i've ordered it immediately. hope i can tell about my experiences soon!
i didn't like the noreve one so much... it looked ok but not so practical for my usage. still, better than the pdair stuff. except for their metal case (at pdair), i've seen the metal version just today, and it looks excellent, my only complaint was its huge size. (and no keyboard protection..) other than that it is indeed very usable and feels robust. so its biggest advantage is that you don't have to be afraid of dropping your 1000EUR universal but i just found it too big.. so there's hoping the krusell will fit my needs perfectly
Nice move. For its price, it's a bargain, IMHO. You won't regret.

A word of WARNING
Hi,
here is a real nightmare story.....with a happy ending. I bought a Sony Ericsson P900 and loved the belt pouch that came with it.It clipped onto my belt and it was great.
Then the day after I paid over 600 euro for my phone I went into a supermarket for a browse around and proceeded to look at some boots which were on display in large metal creels. I had to lean over the side to pick up some for a closer look.
Later as I left the store something which had registered in my subconscious finally made it to the conscious and I reached for my phone........it was not there. I freaked. I retraced my steps in the store frantically looking for the phone, but no joy it was gone.
I borrowed someone elses phone and tried ringing it but the background noise was high and and I could not hear it.Ater an hour searching I gave up and left the store....devistated.
When I git to the car I just had to go back and take one last look, by now an hour had passed and the store was very busy. I went back to where the boots were and started looking through them again......and BINGO, there it was. I put the phone in my pocket for the journey home.
DONT USE A CASE THAT CLIPS ONTO YOUR BELT......GET ONE THAT HAS A PERMANENT BELT LOOP SO THAT IT CAN ONLY BE TAKEN OFF BY OPENING THE BELT BUCKEL. I got away with it, but it could have been a very costly lesson.
Shirt pocket
I like my phone in my shirt pocket. That way I can get to it easily, and put it back, and even hear it ring. No falling off my belt, no getting caught on things I'm walking by (I get my pockets caught on things occasionally; a phone sticking out is out of the question), no having it fall off into a boot, no crushing it in jeans pockets. This has a really big downside - it falls out any time I bend over and if I ever have to run I have to hold it in my pocket.
With my previous phone, a Treo, I bought egrips and those held it securely in a pocket. But egrips won't stick to an MDA, it is too slick. They come off after a few weeks of use.
So I attached a neck strap from a sandisk USB flash drive and put that around my neck. This saved it from falling into an aquarium just today. I can use the phone well, it is long enough. Occasionally it gets wrapped in the shoulder harness. It looks dorky, my wife thinks. Wait until she sees the Hello Kitty neck strap I've been eyeing.
Why does a USB flash drive come with a neck strap, anyway? Who wears a USB flash drive around their neck? And when will someone build a USB drive that fits in my wallet? The Cruzer almost does, but not quite.

Azmer cases break very easily

I bought one from Amazon, broke the first time I dropped it. I'll go look for the link to the case. Will update the thread when I do.
So, the case broke instead of the phone?
Sounds like it worked perfectly. It was a cheap eight bucks.
Perhaps you should shop for one with a neck lanyard.
LoL no, the case didn't work perfectly, it broke.
I have a gun case sitting next to me, it has whats called a rifle in it, If I drop the case, It doesn't break, does that mean my gun case is faulty because its supposed to break when I drop it? damn!
or how about my sunglass case, I just drop that, nope didn't break, hmmmm, let me try my laptop case...nope, still not in pieces.
guess its just your phone case thats supposed to break when you drop it, thats why when you drop otterbox's they disintegrate.
Chalk and cheese. You want to add the bulk around a cellphone that a rifle case puts around a weapon, or the space and padding a sunglasses case adds to a no-mass pair of glasses, you'll be set.
The snap-together cell cases are more for styling and scratchproofing the plastic. If you can stand the feel, and the difficulty it can add to pocket-sliding, you might try an Amzer Jelly case. But you know the damned phone will still manage to land face-down on the one stinking pebble that was within fifteen feet of you.
Or, go high-dollar for the Seidio cases that offer even more protection. And if you're going to be dropping phones, then no, you can't have a sip of my beer.
rocking the best buy plat case right now dropped it 20x and it hasnt broken yet, look, its not that complicated, these case's should not break, not unless they are pure trash.
all I can recomend is buying a not super cheap case thats the same fitment and you will have better luck, but dont tell me its made to break.
the product is just cheap garbage.
I will however say you get what you pay for.

Nsstar™ Flowing Liquid Swimming Fish Hard Case for Apple iPhone 5 REVIEW

This case can compliment your phone quite nicely, and it is also a really nice excuse for you to play with your phone WITHOUT even turning it on!
The case arrives in a generic packaging along with a cup mat. By generic packaging, I mean a simple plastic bag that is sealed.
First Impressions: First time seeing this case, it actually feels and looks nicer in person than online. The hard plastic seems pretty durable. Already I have spent ten minutes just turning the case from one side to the other. It truly is mesmerizing and fun at the same time!
After using it for a while, I noticed that the fish tend to get stuck near the corners. I noticed how when you push on the back of the case while it is on your phone, you can squeeze the small gap which has the liquid and make it move. I did this repeatedly until I accidentally pushed on the fish and got them stuck together in the middle of the case. I pushed on them again to get them free and as I did that, the red fish broke in half. This was very unfortunate indeed. I feel like the fish need to be made out of something more durable. What if you had your phone in your back pocket (with this case), and you sat on the back of your phone? The same thing could easily happen. That is one thing I really am disappointed about. Some good things are the cut outs. They are placed to where you can easily access all of your ports and buttons. This case does offer some minimal protection, but if you dropped your phone while it was in this case on something like asphalt, I would have my fingers crossed hoping that my phone is okay.
I have to admit, this case is very unique compared to others out there. Before I broke one of the fish and had the case on my phone, people would ask where I got it from and would take my phone from me and would immediately start playing with it. They all thought it was really cool!
Overall, I think this is a really neat case, even though the fish broke. Nothing is ever perfect, and I feel like if they made the fish inside more durable, than this case would be great for those that just want a decorative accessory for their phone instead of a case that protects it.
I was provided a unit for testing purposes and I promised to provide a completely honest and fair review.
I have attached some pictures.
Unfortunately, I cannot post the link to this product on Amazon because posting commercial links is forbidden, but you can find it on Amazon by searching for the product's name that is in the title of this thread. Thanks!

Pouch idea, but will it work?

The dimensions of this phone are 6.26" x 2.6" x .66" closed. I've been looking for a nice pouch to put it in rather than a case. I didn't find much but came across the idea to adapt a case for a different purpose to housing this phone. With that in mind here is a link to a case for eyeglasses that I think might work, what do you folks think?
https://www.lucrin.com/accessories/...ard-size-glasses-tan-real-ostrich-leather.htm
i bought a pouch for the fold and thats what i expect to use rather than a case.
I have use a microfiber sunglass pouch for my phone even if it has a case and screen protector. Helps keep pocket dust and stuff out and also serves as a cleaning cloth if needed. Been doing it for 6+ years now.
So I'm not Bat feces crazy, or at least not the only one who is bat feces crazy. I'm still sorting stuff out but I expect to be buying a nice high end leather pouch of some kind for this thing, ostrich, croc, etc. When you've spent this much money on a phone why not throw good money after bad?
Problem being when you're putting in or taking out of the pouch; sooner or later you'll fumble and it will tumble.
It's size, frequency of use and lack of sure handgrips almost guarantees it to happen.
Putting a tether on it might help, but a good case is mandatory to protect it.
B&H carries many different pouches and bags, their customer service is second to none. I use cargo and tactical pants to stash my 10+, works pretty well most times but only it's case has saved it from concrete hell.

Too many learned the hard way with the heavy near no bevel Note's when they fall with no case.
One case the owner's dog's tail whacked it off the table to patio oblivion.
Two layered protection systems generally work best ie hard polycarbonate shell with a semi hard urethane liner. Sort of slim pickens but the last two on this list here look promising.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/best-samsung-galaxy-z-fold-2-cases/?amp
Eye ball them carefully. You want some screen protection that will also double as false touch guards but not too excessive or it will impede usage.
Be careful that mic and speaker ports aren't covered.
At this price point these phones should have a hard tether point just like a camera...
not everyone is clumsy with smartphones. back in the day i use to use pouches all the time with big ass phones like the hitachi G1000 (google it) , the IBM Simon, and newer phones like the htc one max, and never had issues dropping it. lots of OG fold owners did not use a case on those phones and many had no issues.
sure some people are all thumbs with gadgets and that's why cases were made , but lets not post up that everyone drops phones because everyone don't.
matter of fact, my old school nexus 6 - i used a pouch with it, and still looks great all these years later...
Just a matter of time until fate shows you life isn't fair...
pouch
last couple days i've tried both of these cases and they are fine. i saw a cool looking case in the case thread i just picked up , but for now either of these are good for me.
Lowepro makes good gear. For a bare phone this is probably big enough as their internal dim specs tend to be generous. Belt or holster style mount with double lock velcro tabs that don't fail.

Yes, I'm also using the Shocksock that I bought for my original Fold on the Fold 2 now.
Fitbag, a German pouch, is also very good, but exactly fits the device, so even a thin back cover will make the device circumference too large.

Which make is the second, holster-like pouch?
Used Lowepro gear for over a decade. Holds up well.
You need a belt or horizontal strap to mount this. The double securing velcro fasteners stay put.
B&H... were the pros go. Massive inventory and no bs.

Just got mine, and it really does fit like a glove, looks like it was made for the 2 instead of the 1
I was actually looking for something nice, ie real leather, that sort of thing. I do thank folks for their ideas and responses all the same, I may go to the sock if I cant find a nice ostrich leather or something similar.

When I buy clothes I look for ones the will accommodate the phone and other gear;
BDU pants, and vests with chest pockets etc.
The phone gets it's own pocket... works well.
