I’ve had enough. I can’t take it anymore. I have a Blue Angel—an IMATEPDA2K unlocked device for goodlink push e-mail and to work as a converged device.
The device has not worked since mid July. I have tried EVERYTHING to get this device to work on T-mobile’s network. I’m not a novice. I’ve used every HTC device made. I started with PDAs in 1994 with Sharp. I’ve had an HP 690, a PPCPE XDA-I the current XDA-II, and the bottom line is this: I NEED MY GOODLINK PUSH E-MAIL TO WORK AND IT DOESN’T!!!
If you are connected in the USA to the t-mobile GPRS network at internet3.voicestream.com, then the phone will not recieve or place a call. You will get the e-mail, but no phone calls. If you use internet.2.voicestream.com, then you cannot connect to data, but can make phone calls once the data connection fails.
The device is incapble of suspending gprs to take a call or make a call and re-establishing gprs connectivity for push blackberry/goodlink e-mail after a gsm call.
I'll convert it to cdma if anyone has had a positive experience, but it does mean giving up the use in Europe. (Note--if you're in Europe you probably don't have the same issues as the devices are carrier supported there more than here. T-mobile does not suppport this device in the USA, but they do support it in Europe).
I have started with the original shipped ROM certified with goodlink. I have a warranty exchange. I have upgraded to 1.40 and cooked the ROM and downgraded the caller id version to build 1.17. I have then again downgraded the ROM version to the shipped version.
NOTHING—and I mean NOTHING will make this device stable. I give up. I surrender. I am returning this device to the manufacturer and calling American Express (I bought the device from “On the go Solutions” in Chicago as an unlocked device that Dovid Feldman SWORE would work with goodlink and T-mobile!) and telling them it does not work as advertised and I want my money back under the buyers assurance program.
Here’s what I learned: everyone in my company who has a standalone goodlink handset and a standalone cell phone is fine. Everyone who uses a converged device—be it TREO or HTC—is screwed.
I spend on average three hours a day, four to five times a week rebuilding this device from scratch and the phone portion still doesn’t work. When I can’t get my e-mail or make a phone call, it’s not a thousand dollar handset—it’s a brick.
If you can make this thing work and make it work with goodlink on t-mobile or any other network, and I can get my push e-mail I want to hear from you. My company is about to consolidate and we’re going to buy hundreds of handsets and contracts for mobile professionals. Reliability and serviceability matters.
I am sending this device back and getting my money back. A thousand dollars is too much for a device that is a lousy phone, a worse e-mail delivery handset and that needs to be rebuilt form scratch every 24 hours.
I don’t mind doing my own development and tech support, but I expect… no, I DEMAND the device remain stable for longer than 24 hours.
If you think there’s a way to make an HTC device work with push e-mail I want to hear from you—and not on this forum—at Richard.d’[email protected]
If this device can work, I want to know. If it’s just not stable or possible to do push technologies on this, I want to know that too.
Please let me know soon as I will send the device back soon, and get my money back.
I am willing to but locked versions, on Verizon or Sprint for CDMA, T-mobile or cingular on GPRS and GSM, unlocked versions if they work.
I have used goodlink version 3.7, and ROM version 1.40, the original ROM version and cooked the ROM downgrading the caller ID to eliminate the gprs disconnect problem. Nothing works. Nothing.
The device will not connect to T-mobile gprs (sometimes this is network related), and when it DOES it will not receive or make phone calls. EVER. The phone call simply fails to make the call and will not receive or transmit calls. A hard reset and setting all parameters again (DAILY) is the only remedy (and no I've flashed the ROM and re-installed the ROM upgrades three times today, and the problem persists).
I’d rather carry eight devices on my belt that all do ONE THING well.
A lot of money rides on this decision. If you can help, I want to hear from you.
I dont think it is really up to this forum to convince you one way or the other. Having read your text I would have no hesitation in returning the device and also scatching HTC from your list of future providers of phone/pda technology. Your experience speaks for itself, the device isnt fit for the purpose, send it back and find something that does work for you.
Not looking to be convinced--looking for a fix...
I take your point, but I am not looking to be convinced. My intent is to find out is there is a work around that people simply don't advertise.
If there is indeed a stable ROM version for this pupose--push goodlink e-mail and telephony on a GSM GPRS network I haven't seen it. I'm willing to use it, I just don't think it exists.

The upgrade instructions from the O2 website are for v1.72.181 and say if you want the GPRS to stay on when you are making or receiving phone calls then you should use v1.72.187, but 1.72.187 is not compatible with the software they also offer for free to upgrade at the same time. What exactly is the difference between the two, and is 1.72.187 REALLY incompatible with the other software, or what? Does anyone who has v1.72.187 have experience with whether this really works or not, or what? I thought these phones only had one receiver, so how can it be tuned to receive two things at once, or is it just an automatic reconnect at the end of a phone call for the internet, etc? Does it depend upon the carrier you have for GPRS? Is the reconnection robust, or flaky? I don't want to use 1.72.187 if it isn't completely stable. And why isn't it compatible with the other software upgrades they offer at the same time, and where is the 1.72.187 upgrade, I can't find it anywhere on O2's website!?!?!
Firstly, there are minimal differences between the 2 ROMs; at present the 1.72.187 has been removed from O2's site, though I think SourceO2 still have it.
The essential difference is that 181 includes the new Blackberry client for those who want Push email etc. and 187 doesn't. There have been reports of some O2 resellers (like CPW) being unable to offer BB and Web access on the same account, which can be a problem, as the BB APN is essentially a WAP connection and won't allow POP3 email, or MSN access.
Both ROMS are compatible with the extra new programs- TrueFax, Zip and Fonix VoiceDial. The downloads of the ROM update are now IMEI checked, and the new apps check for an O2 UK V1.72 ROM.
The GPRS issue is not important for most users- the disconnect while on a phone call only operates for non standard GPRS connections. Blackberry and normal GPRS will stay connected.
As you suggest, these devices only have 1 receiver, but GPRS is a service which works on top of the normal phone signal- like you can make domestic phone calls whilst using ADSL for surfing, so essentially both are using the same signal and tranceivers.
I have used 1.72.187 since the day it was released (I chose this as I don't need Blackberry) and it has been very stable. The add-ons installed and ran OK, but I don't use Fax or voice dialling, so have since deleted them.
BTW- to use the fax software, you need to ask O2 Customer Services to issue you with a dedicated fax number on your account- this is free of charge and is added to your existing SIM card, and you just pay for calls as normal on that line.
Thanks for your information. I can't find the .187 ROM anywhere, even on source02. Anyway, I am in the middle of upgrading to the .182 ROM. Here is my situation: I have a SIM card I got from T-Mobile when I purchased an XDA I from them about 18 months ago. About 9 months ago I purchased an XDA II (new) on Ebay, the seller told me it was unlocked, it wasn't. Anyway, I found and successfully used the xda2unlock program on this web site and have been happy with it ever since, with the same SIM card and the same contract from T-Mobile. Now I am running the .182 upgrade, wish me luck!
Is .182 a T-Mobile ROM? I haven't heard of this version in UK. If your XDA II was originally not from O2, then you may not be able to access any O2 ROM's, as the downloader now checks the IMEI number for a genuine O2 device.
I upgraded the Pocket PC with no ptoblem to .182. No, as I was saying above, I purchased the unit from Ebay, it is a tru O2 XDAII. Everything is working fine.
rI am told by a reliable and senior source within T-Mobile UK that they are shortly releasing a further ROM Upgrade. Thank heavens for that
And before everyone says that they have already upgraded etc.. this is of specific importance to:
1 Those who don't feel comfortable puting a different ROM on; or
2 Those like me who use Blackberry which won't work with any radio other than 1.0 and 1.6 (unofficial confimation).
Anyway watch this space because I am told end of June will be
the date. Please also pass on this news through the other fora as a lot of users are posting wanting to know about T-Mobile MDA III updates.
Thanks
J
Thanks for that info - I wait in anticipation.
Do you know any details of what issues the new ROM will address? Does it have WMP10?
MDA Unlocked ?
Jiggy
I notice your signature mentions Tmobile MDA III Unlocked.
Havin just got one yesterday I want to look to doing bloody everything on it.
Firstly, use it a a phone.
2nd - Sync it with my Mailbox on Our Exchange 2003 server which is fully accessible from the Internet. - I' think i understand that to access this server, i need to use GPRS (and also seen how expensive it is - 7.50perMb).
But what/why do i see all this unlocking terminology on these boards.
I assume there are benefits ? if so could you tell me what.
Thanks in advance.
David.
The "Unlocked" simply refers to the phone being either locked to a single provider (E.g. TMobile etc) or able to accept SIM cards from any telecoms provider. If you put a different telecom providers SIM card in your phone it either works or displays a locked message with a request to put an unlock code in.
A great number of supplied Blue Angels (And other XDA type devices) are being shipped locked to the provider who supplies it. For people who are travelling abroad and use foreign SIM cards or people who simply want to swap SIM card for a different provider are stopped from doing so.
This I feel is a very annoying situation as most providers lock you into a 1 year contract if the phone is subsidised and then refuse to provide an unlock code for that year. This is unacceptable and is simply a money generating exercise in these situations (Providers will tell you it is to stop people purchasing the phone and then disappearing with it without paying but they can block the IMEI number of the phone to stop this anyway!)
Hopefully that answers your question and allowed me to have a little rant!
Jiggy
Thanks. Totally agree with your comments.
David.
MDA III Updates/Unlocked
As regards the post quering my device being unlocked - T-Mobile UK will unlock one of its devices for £15 after 1 month's use. They did not make me wait for 12 months (the term of my contract). I happily paid this, as it is a relatively modest amount, compared to buying out the contract . They are one of the cellcos in the UK who will do this.
On the updates thread I will keep everyone updated. My contact as much as admitted that they view this site as a helpful way of getting the updates to end users. So unofficial Kudos, as always, to xda-developers

So he has worked out were he can download the cabs to install in the T-mobile Ext Rom, think he will be able to download a radio version that is newer?
I can also confirm this as the nice man at t-mobile who assisted me with enabling blackberry last friday told me that there is a patch coming soon., and that we should be informed by service message

LOL and Bump I like your thinking MDA III User . Good to hear from you haven't spoken in ages. You never know they may just about have taken the hint.
I am one of those high maintenance customers but I spend a fair amount so they humour me!!

Hi,
does anyone know what level the update will go to as I am unsure whether to wait for it or just go ahead and upgrade to 1.40 now cos I really cant be bothered to do it twice if the tmobile one is going to be better somehow :?
Any help would be appreciated
i spoek to t mobile last week while sorting out my mda 3 and they said that they thought the update would be about in september. She said that they were currently doing testing on it before the release.
however, she promised me that when available it woud be published here!

Currently they have the rom i am running.
Keep your eyes peeled for it!
Thanks for the link I have updatred wiki
Any more news on this subject??
T-Mobile have gone silent
My contact at T-Mobile has gone silent on me. Despite voice mails and emails requesting an update on a) what is in and b) release date of an update. Never a good sign :?
Can all T-Mobile customers start bugging them with me as this is the only way to raise the priority of this issue.
We still do not have WMP10 or an updated radio stack (you cannnot use BB connect with anything other than 1.0). Although with the no sound problem on certain ROMs perhaps we should be thankful!
Stength and safety in numbers on this one
I've been checking this link weekly since this thread began with no joy. Now even the link no longer works! I gues this won't be happening then!
it works
you should go on connect and then mda3 then rom upgrade and download it
I have been looking for a while but found no difinitive answer for this question which makes me think it would be tough, but here goes. My friend had Qwest cellular service in Minnesota and had an HTC PPC 6800 with them. At the time that he had this, Qwest's service was actually rebundled Sprint, but with a Qwest badged phone. While he and his family's business had an account through them they were forced to go to Verizon for their carrier and in turn he recieved the Verizon version of his phone, the VX6800 I believe. After he had switched providers with Qwest he had his old 6800 still laying around and gave it to me as I had done some work for him and his family's business developing a VPN and remote server management tools and started to develop a Linux PBX for them. My questions are this:
1. Is it possible to use this phone with my Sprint/Nextel service?
2. What are the steps I need to take to make this possible if I can indeed use this.
I understand about flashing ROMS and whatnot, but, do I need to do anything first to the phone to "unlock" it to work with Sprint and then load custom Firmware? Or can I just use something like DCD's Titan Kitchen to make this phone work with it?
My part time job is working at a Radioshack and I talked to my Sprint rep about swapping the ESN on my account from my old Nextel phone I have to this 6800 and she said it should be no problem if the phone could be unlocked. I really hope there is a way I could get this to work as I would hate to see a perfectly good smartphone go to almost total waste since a company decided to change their contract and make all their users switch to a new phone company. I know it could still be used to some things but I could just buy a smaller PDA and carry my phone with as well but that is not what the whole smartphone movement was about now was it? Thank you very much for listening and thank you in advance for any help that you might be able to provide.

I was just wondering if running Android on our devices change the IMEI (I'm guessing not but I just wanted to make sure). I ask this because I have no data plan on my AT&T HTC Fuze, and I don't want to be slapped with a data plan because it looks like I changed devices. I compared the IMEI in Android and Windows Mobile, and saw no difference in number, but when I plugged in my device to my computer it registered as an HTC Dream (I assume this because we are using drivers from the Dream?).
This is my first time running Android on my device, runs pretty smooth, but I'm a bit hesistant to run it again until I can verify this information. The build I tried is [prj][XDANDROID][2.2][AOSP][18.7.10]RC1 RELEASED . Runs very nicely, just as fast as Windows Mobile does natively for me.
Thanks!
Just thought of a couple more questions. I was wondering, is there anyway to switch between Windows Mobile and Android smoothly? I'm fine with launching Haret from File Explorer, but how do I get back to Windows Mobile without using my stylus to soft reset. Shutting down isn't a option, I tihnk the build I'm using has a problem with that so far (just crashes when shutting down.).
I honestly don't think you have to worry about it, I don't think Android would be able to (have access to) change that value...
From wikipedia:
Unlike the Electronic Serial Number or MEID of CDMA and other wireless networks, the IMEI is only used for identifying the device, and has no permanent or semi-permanent relation to the subscriber. Instead, the subscriber is identified by transmission of an IMSI number, which is stored on a SIM card that can (in theory) be transferred to any handset. However, many network and security features are enabled by knowing the current device being used by a subscriber.

Alright, that's what I was thinking, but I thought because there were so many rules against the discussion of how to spoof your IMEI that it might be possible that this might spoof the IMEI some how. But seeing how the IMEI is the same in Android as it is in Windows Mobile, and I haven't been hit with a "You have a smartphone here's your data plan" text message, I guess I'm safe. Thanks!

I have been told by an AT&T support engineer that they are gradually going through their database and matching up IMEI's, IMSI's, and plans to ensure that everyone has a SIM and plan that matches up with their device. I don't know if they are doing this methodically, or on a case-by-case bases as people call for support or purchase new plans/devices. But there is a chance they will discover that you have a PDA without a PDA data plan at some point.
I kept my original Cingular SIM and kept putting it into new phones for years rather than using the new SIMs that AT&T sent me with new phones. I never had an issue until the purchasing department (who manages the cell phone plans, etc for my work) disabled text messaging for everyone in the company (mine was one that was not supposed to be disabled). When I called purchasing to get it fixed, texting starting working again, but in the process all my data died. Then I called about that and ended up talking directly to an AT&T support engineer. He "couldn't enable data" for me because I had an "incompatible SIM." Never mind the fact that it had been working fine before. I guess they realized that the IMSI on my SIM was from an old device that was never compatible with data when it was purchased, (but it was not blocked from data either). I ended up having to put a newer SIM in my phone to get my data working again. I think in the end, the old SIM was using the older Cingular APN information (which still worked) rather than the newer AT&T/Cingular APN information. I think they blocked my data by disallowing my device (SIM) to connect to the older APN.

Thanks for the outlook, but I believe I'm fine. I talked to several different AT&T reps, and because I got my smartphone before Nov 6th I believe (when they first started making them mandatory) I was grandfathered in, and do not have to get a data plan, unless I upgrade to a new device, or change my device pretty much. So I'm stuck with this phone until I'm ready for a data plan. I've talked to the reps before and after the plans started coming into affect. If you've never had a data plan before, you don't have to get one on your current device, just upgrading will force you too. If you warranty, that's a gray area, I've heard you can call and let them know it's a warranty, and it should be fine they'll take it off, but I've heard stories where the reps just say they can't do anything.
Hello. I am wondering if someone here might be able to clear something up for me. I bought a new EVO 4G off eBay a few days ago. I called Sprint to verify the ESN is clean.
The thing is, I don't have any intention to activate this phone, rather I bought it as a toy, and because upon coming back to the US for a vacation a few weeks ago, I finally saw what it looks like in person and I had to have it (Yes, I like smartphones). Of course ironically it FINALLY released in Japan just days after I left but that's besides the point.
Anyway, I have the WiFi turned on and the phone has found my location for the HTC Sense weather widget, however the internet won't load and when I try to connect to Google to use the Marketplace and such, it says there is an error communicating with the servers, and that my phone might not be set up for data provision.
Someone please tell me that Sprint hasn't locked down this such that you can't even use the Wi-Fi until it's activated. Though I suspect that is indeed the case...
...and IF that is so, then am I correct in the understanding that flashing it with some custom ROM would solve the problem? I have never rooted a phone before, though I do own a number of unlocked ones (Nexus S, Xperia Play, etc) and so I had intended to try it out with this, since I can never actually use this as a phone. But perhaps it might be more of a necessity than I had expected.
Not sure if this will help you, but if you flash Warm Z, or any other of the froyo/sense 2.2 ROMs, during setup it will ask you if you want to use it on the data network or only on wifi.
Since you don't need 4g anyway, I would recommend checking it out. One of my favorite ROMs.

I can't say this with confidence, because my Evo hasn't been deactivated before, but as far as I understood it, you should be able to connec to WiFi, whether the phone is activated or not. You shouldn't need to be activated to use WiFi. When you connected to the WiFi network, did it connect successfully and show good signal strength?
How about formatting the phone and then turning on airplane mode and then wifi. It should work fine
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.
Yes, being a used phone, I would highly recommend do a factory reset on it first. That way it will be clear of anything the previous owner might have done to it.
And yes, the phone will work on wifi only without a data plan, just make sure the phone is in airplane mode all the time, then turn the wifi on.
I had that happen to me with a old android when I did a factory rest you should have wifi but you can't use the market or gmail without a data plan from sprint at least I could not but I had a Samsung moment and it was rooted with a costume ROM on it I've never had my evo turned of so IDK..... If thats the case you can use other ways to get apps like Amazon or applanet thats what I did anyway......
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Thanks to everyone who provided assistance. A few things:
1. The phone was actually still sealed. The security stickers were still on the phone and the manual, and even the battery was still unopened. Furthermore the phone itself still had the plastic sheet over the screen in perfect condition (something I've not even got from so-called new unlocked phones) so unless the seller went through really great loops to make it look new, it is apparently new. Though I will format the memory just incase.
2. I turned on Airplane mode as everyone suggested, and then when I turned on WiFi it let me connect to the Android Marketplace actually.
Actually, can I ask one more question, though unrelated. I want someone to confirm this:
I have two different contract carriers with me here roaming (Docomo and Softbank), both on Android Phones (the Xperia Play unlocked and Desire HD locked respectively). I have the mobile data transmission set to off (no roaming), however the actual phone service is on roaming. Every time I turn on the phones I receive messages from the carriers about roaming charges for data. I want to confirm that if the data roaming is OFF, and it is on Wi-Fi always, there are no charges for anything other than if I were to make a phone call, is this correct? I am 99.999% sure this is true, but part of me is really worried about returning and seeing a $10,000 bill.
but you can't use the market or gmail without a data plan from sprint

Yes you absolutely can. To the phone, a wifi connection is the same as a 3g connection, its just a way to access the internet.

You could still get charged for any texts/picture mail you receive, as those still go through the regular phone radio, not the data radio.

Drat...I've received a number of those actually, but all from the carriers themselves which I think might be free of charge.
Japan basically doesn't do SMS/MMS thus it's really not an issue. And while Softbank does to an extent, I can't seem to actually receive any while here, as it actually keeps saying I have undelivered mail.
But I am happy everyone here mentioned the Airplane Mode detail as I had no idea you could use Wi-Fi in it. I had been angry because there seemed like no way to shut off the cellular radio and that provided a solution.
Sorry if I seem paranoid, but I literally received a bill for $5400 last December due to a carrier mistake (and they actually had the nerve to accuse me of using an overseas phone when I CLEARLY was using a locked one) and ever since I have been scared about getting another. Currently Docomo is the only carrier in Japan that will allow unlocked phones to be used, though in doing so you are thus accepting that your data transmission charge will be capped at $120 a month instead of the normal $75 for its sanctioned (locked) products. But Japan is so far behind with smartphones I can't stand to use any of them.
