hi
i have lost all of the wifi settings on my xda exec after doing a hard reboot and doing a coparate install!!! i have found the mms/gprs settings in one of the forums via a cab file but does anybody have such thing for the wifi or even just has the setting for it!!!
cheers guys
Is this a not-so-clever phishing attack on peoples wifi networks??
There are no settings for wifi.
The wifi config is dependant on the network you connect to, when you use a wifi network you get the settings from the owner/operator of that wifi network.
nope, it just me being silly now, i've just realised what to do after you've just said it!! silly me
thanks

If you leave your wifi on all the time it is going to waste battery power, it would be better to just turn on wifi when you know that it is likely that you have a wifi access point within range. On my Trinity, wifi always takes over for browsing but for some reason retrieving mail can sometimes default to HSDPA. If you have a huge attachment to download, it is probably better to push the hangup button to turn off your data connection and just use the Wifi.
Wifi and GPRS switching
The only utility that I found useful for switching between Wifi and GPRS internet access is an application called "Bandswitch" (freeware).
I recently received a T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 cell. I'm NOT paying for web service and would like to only use Wi-Fi. If I disable my data connection under the communication manager, would this mean that I will not be using T-Mobiles web service and only my Wi-Fi? Can I still receive calls/text messages when the data connection is set to off? Do I have to worry about the data connection setting automatically turning on by itself for whatever reason?

Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Flipping that switch manually turns off your phone's 3G connection, and you can still make/receive calls/sms. However, as soon as some app or process needs a data link (ones that don't/won't use the wifi connection), it will flip that connection right back on.

Which apps do I have to worry about flipping the connection on? I only plan on surfing the web and I don't plan on setting up my e-mail account. I only want to text and browse the web using my TP2. Thanks for the response.

Well Google Maps for one, it insists on downloading through your 3G data connection even if you're connected to wifi. There may be others that will ignore a wifi connection and fall back on 3G, I don't know off the top of my head, you can dig around here some to see if there's any reference to that (I know I've seen it, just don't have it bookmarked)
Yes, some apps are automatically enabling the data connection.
My solution:
go to Settings > Connections >
and delete the 'data connection' for your provider.
Their you could also go to advanced and choose which networks will be used for what type of connection; play with it.
The data connection isn't used for 'calls', only if you are calling over IP (skype e.g.)
With a program like SPB wireless monitor, you can see which connection has used how many bandwidth.

How do I go about deleting the data connection from my provider? I'm lost!
There is an easier way. Use the Modoco NoData cab and it turns off the data connection until you turn it back on. This way if you decide that you want to use the data later you dont have to find out and enter your settings again.
It works very well.
For those who want to restrict the data to thier home carrier ie: no roaming the Dynamic+ NoDataInRoaming is ideal as it automatically switches on and off when you enter and leave your home area.
Firstly I apologise if this has been answered already but I've tried searching and couldn't find an answer.
My email and internet works perfectly over a 3G connection but I spend a lot of my time travelling and so as not to incur high roaming charges I would like to be able to use a wifi connection for my email and internet. The problem is that even when I have a wifi connection both of these applications still try to use the 3G signal.
I expect I am probably missing something quite basic but I can't seem to work out how to make these applications use the wifi connection instead of 3G.
If someone could explain this to me I would be very grateful. If you can provide an idiots guide of step by step instructions that would be even better.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Matt
For email go into the account settings for each email account and under advanced server settings change the connection. on AT&T it defaults to Media Net. Change this to The Internet and this will allow it to use wifi if it is on.
I always set my Wi-Fi connections to connect to my Work network, and leave AT&T as The Internet. Then in the Connections settings, I switch the preferred networks for applications to access the internet between Work and The Internet depending on what I want to force the phone to use. Works for ALL applications that access the internet, not just email. For a long time I didn't even have an AT&T data plan, and that's how I forced my phone to use Wi-fi.

Thanks for the hint. But how can I change the preferred connection (e.g. wifi) using my hotmail-account for email? I can't find in the account-settings.
Any ideas are welcome!!!

Ok so I'm not even sure it's possible but I have a phone I'm not using so I was wondering can I set the apn settings to connect to a Wi-Fi network instead of a mobile network.
Thing is my Wi-Fi get a quarter meg dl n a tenth upload on my pc but 6 megs dl n 2 megs upload on the phone so I tried looking for a way to use it as a repeater but apparently it's nt possible with android so I figured if I used Wi-Fi instead of a mobile network n run my hotspot it may work something like a repeater.
So anyway my question is can I set the apn settings to connect to my Wi-Fi network rather than t mobile's mobile data network
Short Answer. NO.
