WiFi Hotspots POI - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Does anyone know if there's a WiFi Hotspot POI file that I can add to my TomTom thingy?
Would save me wandering around town staring at the display.
Also, I have started using WiFiFoFum - there is a GPS tab. Can it link up to my TomTom software/hardware?
Thanks in advance guys,
b

try this link m8 http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/tomtompoi.php

are there many wifi hot spots in the uk. i work in an airport and the only ones i have come across cost £4 for half an hour.
thinking about it there isn't much int in asking because if i haven't come across any hotspots already im not going to get in my car and go and look for them

I live in Greater London, and work in Central London. There are hundreds of hotspots around the West End, but most of them are locked out with WEP. I wanted a listing of locations I can access, like BT Openzones etc., so I don't have to wander around searching.

dual sim and sat nav

Hi I have just received my XDA 11s, and this is my first post. Has anyone used the dual sim adaptor (DIGITAL Dual Sim III form 2 phones in 1)?
If you have does it work ok or are there some issues?
Also I would like to use sat nav. I have no experience with this in any form. What In your opinion would be the best system? I would like to use it for in-car and walk about in towns etc.
How do you keep the maps updated? Do you have top keep buying updates?
Thanks for any help sorry if the questions are a bit boring
Cheers

I sue the "King of Dual SIM" adapter and I like it because it does not require you to cut the SIMS. It works fine & only cost about £10 from eBay
I use TomTom5 for SatNav - it allows walking route to be planned (not that I use them) and with a suitable GPRS connection, live (ish) traffic updates (subject to a yearly subscription). The traffic link has saved me a few times, but it ain't perfect.
You can also get traffic camera databases for teh common satnav systems (inc tomtom) & updates can be downloaded from the tomtom website

cell id info?

Is there an app for the winmob that would tell me with which base station I am connected at the moment?
My problem is, that since yesterday morning my data connections are broken every half an hour - but only when I am at the customer site in frankfurt city skyscrapers.
When I am at my flat 2kms away, the data connections (irc, putty, etc) are working without any problems. But coming back to the office... bleah.
And of course calling the t-mobile helpdesk is a pain. They suggested that "in htc phones you have to clean up the memory time to time" (HUH?) and that my sim card is so old, perhaps that's the problem... yeah, right.
It took me over 10 minutes to clear this 1st level supporter what kind of a problem this is - clearly a base station needs to be rebooted.
So, if I could get the cell id from the network, it could help pinpointing the faulty station..
At least in this Miri's ROM I can't find anywhere this information.

Yeah. With one little exception. It does not tell you the CID. The closest info you get is the ARFCN, which can be corelated to the CID with some good will from the operator, but I doubt that the help desk will be much of a service with that. If you can get to a OMC operator it's a whole different story, but the fact that they want you to tell them the CID instead of they tracing you tells me that you a talking to a mere call center operator. And that's just in case you are trying to connect to the GSM/GPRS network. If you are trying to connect to the WCDMA/HSPA network you are in a completely different ball game. The UARFCN is usualy the same in the whole network, or at least geographical regions, so it is no use in discovering your CID.
To tell you the truth, I seriously doubt that the base station needs 'rebooting'. Still it's a shame that HTC's network monitor tool lacks maybe the most important information for the network.
Well the problem persists now since monday morning - 4 days.
Only when I am at the office or on the street below here, the data connection closes with an error message latest every 30 mins.
When I walk half a kilometer for lunch, the stops don't come any more (I also am on a different base station according to google maps location).
And when I am in my flat or somewhere else in the city - zero data connection stops.
The problem is not trivial, as the phone keeps shuffling between H and E in the office - but it can't be just a handshake problem - it must be something with a certain base station.
I'll be calling the help desk again later today - they actually promised on tuesday that a technician would call me when they have someone available to talk about the stuff. But you're guessing right if you think whether one called me or not...

Did you try to force your HD to use either the WCDMA or the GSM network? This will help you with the H/E shuffling. Its under settings->personal->phone->band. And one more thing - did you try to use the data connection outside the building. That way you will be connected to the same site (hopefuly), but you should not be experiencing the H/E hopping. Still, please post what happened after the technician called you .
Well, the technician has not called me... for an obvious reason.
I called t-mobile again on thursday or friday. This time they told me they can't (won't) take my case under work, because I don't have a paper bill with me - so that I could resite the customer number and sim card number to legitimize myself! Sod off I'd like to say to that.
And of course I forgot to check those things when at home the weekend.
Now I am again since yesterday evening in Frankfurt again. No problems at my flat with the connection - and as I entered the office again, the problems started. Max 30 mins and the data connection is telling me that the answering modem has terminated the connection. Telephone calls work normally. Have had a lot of them today, also over 40 mins.
So this evening I'll get those frigging numbers from the customer center of telekom and call the service again tomorrow.
Have had zero such problems anywhere else but here in the office. Haven't experienced any problems on the street neither - but then, my office is in the 20th floor and I'm pretty sure that out on the street I have a different base station than up here.

whoa! got thru to a network technician.
Had an in-all 19 minutes talk with the help desk.
The technician tracked down my connections and as I asked if I'm connected with the taunusanlage base station, he confirmed that. (well, thanks google maps for pointing out the nearest antenna)
It was also quite obvious from my data usage data to see, that I only have reconnects all the time with this base station.
He also said that there is already a maintenance job&crew dispatched for the base station, as there have been more problem reports regarding it - hopefully they'll fix it within a couple of days.
And thanks ACR 1.2.1 the whole call is stored on my storage card

I am really curios to hear how this ends, keep us posted please !
well well, ever since I got to talk to the technician, the data connection breakups have almost diminished. Since the call have had perhaps 2 or 3 times only this happening any more.

Congorats on finally getting it to work! Nice little adventure you had

this is completely normal.
this week i was also in FFM in the skyscrapers. (highest was 50th level)
and there you can't get a signal.
my coleague with a Sony Erricson Phone with Vodafone and myself with my Touch HD with O2 were connectionless.
The employees stated that this is normal and we hat to go on the balcony to get a signal.
personally i think that it also has something to to with the heat-protection-glass of these skyscrapers.
as in a car you can't get a clean signal through
The wandering between H/E has not stopped. And I haven't had but 1 breakup like this since my last post. So they really did have a problem with the antenna(s).
A different thing is of course, that mostly the data connections get gut during a phone call as I am mostly on E and not on H. But then I don't get the error message "the answering modem has closed the connection".
About the 50th floor... there aren't too many going that high But I am not there. My highest visits go max 36th

Weak cell signal - How can I boost it?

Hi all,
I need advice on how to boost my cell signal in at work (downtown Chicago with big buildings everywhere). I'm near a window but there isn't much of a signal. I hear there is an external antenna i can plug into the phone to let me surf the web & get text messages more easily. Anything you can suggest I try or even buy? I have a HTC hero.
Thanks!
Nope... not even those stupid cell booster stickers. Actually with those there isn't even a placebo effect
3 potential routes.
1. Depending on the size of the office and if you've got a corporate account with many lines, you can ask the corp rep to install a repeater in your floor. It is possible, I've done it! Just needs a little diplomacy, local IT needs to get involved as well as building maintenance personnel. They'll run a T1 line through the building's wiring to the local telephone switch.
2. Do a survey of the office and find out how many people have the same issue. Present the issue to management along with the solution: http://www.wilsonelectronics.com/
3. Forward cell calls to your office phone.
maybe installing a different radio ROM is already good enough? look in ROM section of your device.

I've got the same problem!
take a portable ladder with you
I don't know for the Hero, but some older devices have a little round whole in the back (mostly covered with rubber) where you can stick in an external antenna witch uses an external source (wall charger) so mainly your phone becomes a land phone
buy first try to update your radio ROM
oh don't buy that sticker s%^t

Free Working Cell Phone in Entertainment Weekly Ad

http://phandroid.com/2012/10/02/and...n-the-latest-edition-of-entertainment-weekly/
Per this article, folks at "Mashable" uncovered a working cell phone with a T-Mobile sim in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly meant to be a high-tech ad for the CW displaying live Tweets and crap like that. I was wondering if the inner parts were combined with another cheapo ABO Android phone, if this could be a working cell phone with 3G data and all? Or, if one could simply remove the T-Mobile sim and stick it in their GSM Nexus if they'd get working data/calls?
There are 1000 copies of the magazine scattered around LA and NY. I might try to search for one tomorrow when I'm in the city. If anyone sees one, picks it up, and sticks the sim in their GNex, let me know how it goes. Who knows how long the sim would be good for, or if it'll even work, but it might be worth trying, no?

it's a funny idea. i'll try to bring one for me!
Did you read the original Mashable article? You CAN make phone calls and use data on it. It's a real smartphone
It's probably using a prepaid TMo SIM with a month's worth of credit in it.
The 2 people in the Mashable vid were horrible! I was so angry listening to them talk.
It was only sent to subscribers, in the only two cities that "really matter", New York City and Los Angeles. Same as it was for that Esquire magazine e-ink cover and the CNN video ad which used a simple video player device with a small screen.
The CNN one was quickly hacked to play other videos. Wasn't much to do with the Esquire cover since it was made of fixed elements like a cheap LCD game toy.
The phone appears to be the guts of an Abo 810. Pretty junky little phone but what? It supports JAVA apps?
Why can't I have that on my Epic 4g? Would be nice to remotely access my printer's built in server from my phone but I can't because the phone OS built on JAVA doesn't have a full JRE, but apparently the Chinese came up with one.
I doubt much will be done with hacking those magazine phones with only 1,000 of them out there and likely the majority of them will get tossed in the trash within the next week or two.

Cradlepoint usage with WiFi Tether Router

I just tried to connect my S3 to my Cradlepoint MBR-1000. At first it did not work, but then started to. Connected thru usb straight from the phone as a modem, but the data count sent and received are not working in the wifi tether. Don't really care really, but I want to make sure I'm not flagging myself to Sprint, or worse, get a huge bill next month. About a week ago, I canceled my data card as I had not used it for over one year.
Anyone know if I'm good or not? I did a quick look for a router forum here but did not see anything. Thanks
Pick of info screen on the cradlepoint.

I also have a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 still in the box if anyone knows how to share my cells with it. I live in the country and have to keep the phone in a Wilson's booster cradle. Nice out here in the woods, but has it's limits.
