Are ROMs geographical location specific? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

I am based in India and bought my XDA IIs here through a reseller of O2. I want to know that are the ROMs that are available on FTP channel of this site geographical location specific?
I want to choose the right Radio ROM to update my XDA IIs. I am a bit scared to do it though.
Thanks,
Siddharth

Welcome to the forum
Please take time to read wiki, the link you will find in my signature,
The roms are NOT "geographical location specific". they are made up of 3 parts. The OS or CE rom is the language that you use (WWE for english), The exteneded rom is the operator sepcifiv part. it gives you settings that are only good for one operator in one place (SMS number, Help line, web links) as well as freebies applications ZIP, PDF viewer. This can be cooked to your own needs (via wiki), The radio is a version number and the higest is thought to be the best, at the moment 1.12 is the higest but alot of people feel 1.10 is better. That is waht this forum is about, reading what has worked for others.
Please use the searc funtion at the top and have fun in wiki

O2 XDA IIs - is there an *official* ROM upgrade?

Wondering if there's an official rom upgrade?
Read a few scary stories about people ROM upgrading, so just wondered if there was an official upgrade which I *know* will work and not kill anything
Cheers
there is a 1.40 asian rom update, but as o2 in uk are crap, they havent released the upgrade yet.
they will only **** it up with that o2 active crap anyway, choose another 1.40rom, and folllow wiki, u cannot got wrong.
The latest one can be downloaded from the 02 website http://www.seeo2.com/ I just installed it and its working fine
think im being dumb, cant find it on seeo2.com
i know it must be in the o2 connect section somewhere...?
any pointers? cheers mate
Here is the link to the O2 Asia 1.40 ROM update.
http://www.seeo2.com/user/XdaIIs/template/XdaIIs_ROMUpgrade_Jun2005.vm
I think you will need to have a login and valid o2 Asia xda 11s device to access it. If you have an O2 UK xda 2s, you can still download and apply this update from here (our wiki site)
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_1.40.00_Upgrade
Hope this helps
Regards
Chris
Cheers Chris
Has anyone tried the wiki one with a uk xda 2s and can confirm its working a-ok?
Thanks again
Aslan
Hi Aslan
Yes, I have the O2 UK XDA2S and have loaded the Asia ROM (see details in my signature block] The only thing you may have to do after loading is to substitute the Caller ID cab file in the extended ROM. You only need to do this if you experience GPRS disconnects after upgrading, which is somewhat dependent on the operator/service provider you are with. Some work fine without the substitution. Who are you with?
Regards
chris
Cheers Chris - well I don't use GPRS so I'm alright I guess!
Although wondering if there's any way to do a backup which i can port over to the new ROM...too much stuff to reinstall!
Any ideas - sprite backup?
HI ASLAN
Backing up shouldn't be a problem... if you just have data you could use xback up or Sprite and back the data up to an sd card or your computer. Do you use Outlook, as that would be another way to do it via active synch. Let me know what you have to back up and I can better advise..
Regards
chris
Hi mate,
Got all the standard contacts/calendar etc which I can do by synching. But also got some progs on:
Pocket Informant
resco file explorer
tomtom navigator
and a few skyscape medical apps.
other bits too but don't really mind having to reinstall those the above are the main ones i use.
Do you know if sprite backup backs up installed programs too? Been havin' a read of this:
http://spritesoftware.crmdesk.com/answer.aspx?id=63&back=browse.aspx#p17
So 02 finally released their 1.40 rom. cool
anyone tried it yet? does it install the dreaded 02 crap as well?
Is there a corporate mode to this rom as well so we can get rid of the 02 software?
does it have everything that the 02 asia rom has to offer?

Hi aslan
I do not believe that Sprite will be able to reinstate your programs. I do not know for sure, but think it unlikely after a reflash.. You could send then an e-mail to the ask a question link on the page you found to be sure though..

Hi alitech
The ROM discussed above is in fact the O2 ASIA ROM 1.40.923. You can load this onto your O2 UK XDA2s using the MAUgrade utility found here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_1.40.00_Upgradeon the wiki site, along with the WWE ROMS that are available. The O2 Asia ROM does not have the O2 Active interface, so no need for Corporate mode  I guess that O2 UK will one day release its own 1.40 update for the xds 2s, which is rumoured to include a Blackberry client. Hopefully this will be before the xda2s makes it into the Science Musiem
Hope this helps

O2 UK - Most Bone Idle Organisation In UK!
Hi
I've been waiting for an official upgrade as well, but I think we will be waiting an eternity. O2 does not care about its customers one little bit - thats why we are all stuck with ancient, buggy roms while others enjoy the bug fixes in newer roms.
Many users, myself included dont have the time to fiddle around making foreign roms work.
I guess I shall have to bite the bullet and install the O2 asia rom, and prey the unit still works afterwards.
My contract ends next month, and after the 'O2 XDA IIs' episode I have had with O2, I shall never, ever pass any money their way again.
To be honest, I reckon you are far far better paying the extra money up front, buying an imate and choosing your contract yourself. They do tend to release updates in a timely mannar - which results in much less lost hair!!
The HTC universal looks nice, but there us *no way* I am gonna be paying that sort of cash for it!!
Nigel
Hi Veletron
Yes, I can't say I blame you. (and who came up with the idea to use light blue special character keys with a blue backlight I wonder?] I am actually thinking about switching to a !Qtek 9100, aka Wizard. They will be unlocked and available 5 Oct. Qtek have also been good with ROM updates I think.

Well so far you are the only one who wrote that and was "kind" enough to repost it again. I believe each person here has the brain to make their own judgement. If they like PDAViet ROM and flash "a lot" so be it. There is no point of trying to convince the others that PDAViet ROM is not good up to your standard. Your "high" standard might not be the same as the others.
It would be best if the developers of these PDAVIET images posted here, then people could ask them questions, and they could respond to bugs etc.
They can carry on posting images on their forum, but I think it's important to realise these roms are posted on a non-english forum, and many people here are flashing it blindly, not knowing if there are things to watch out for, patches or registry imports that should be run, and so on.
I just think it's dangerous the amound of hype surrounding these images when nobody is posting any proper change logs, or able to answer what is changing from one rom to the next.
It's unlikely anything bad will happen, but at the moment, someone saying "wow this is so fast" seems to be enough in people's mind to warrant a reflash.
It's all getting a bit silly imo.

I'm absolutely AGREE with you !!!
Hi imisim,
and that's exactly why I wrote the disclaimer, I obviously didn't write it clearly enough, sorry! I'm saying I don't have a problem with any of these people posting the ROMS (although it would be nice if they produced changelogs saying what they were improving), I don't believe there's any problem with any of the ones they have posted!
The thing I'm trying to warn of was that when people are posting random rapidshare and other file upload service links "HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT THEY ARE???" For example I haven't seen any of these recent ROM images posted with an MD5 sum that can be checked for validity.
Sorry if I didn't make my point clear!
I believe each person here has the brain to make their own judgement.

I agree with you however you need to keep in mind that the PDAViet ROM are leased in their site which is Vietnamese.
The change log is there but in Vietnamese.
The problem is not PDA Viet because their ROM is published for their members and most of them are Vietnamese. The link to their ROM as being posted by the xda-developers members and unfortunately most don't read Vietnamese
BatteryStatus issue....
.....after having issues with reseting my device, I realised that BatteryStatus was causing the issue, forcing me to hard reset my device twice....now the device resets nicely.....but can anyone recommend a good small battery indicator, or even a taskbar one?
Thanks
I don't speak vietnamese too, I posted that link just because that ROM is the most stable one I've flashed, and trusth me, I've flashed all!
BTW, I agree with who says that way is not the most secure.
outfocus: I use iLauncher3, but is not free
I have to agree. I'm interested in trying one of the WM6 ROMs on my wizard/xda mini s, but with the frantic whirlwind of posts, follow-ups, and the almost random naming conventions, the whole BBS seems to have become a frenzy and it's now left me at a complete loss as to which, if any, WM6 ROMs I should have a go with.
Add to that a huge amount of "people should just read the threads" posts, combined with maybe 20 topics, each of 20+ pages of crap to read through, and I'm now probably too nervous about bricking my device to try. For example, do I flash the orwell1984 one, and if so, do I need to roll in the WWE stuff, or will it just work? Should I go for the pdaviet ROMs, or not - and if so which is the best?
Is it any wonder people are left scratching their heads?

The change log is on their site and here is a rough translation
- ROM v2.00.04 PV was based on ROM v2.00.03 PV
- Aggressive Reg editing.
- Fix RAM leaked and device hung.
- More available RAM (above 24,25Mb) and guarantee faster
- Some additional improvement and add-on.
just one question: is this ROM same as the ROM in this post(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=290865)?
If not, what the difference between them?
Thx.
Pro Differences / Preliminary Review
Sorry Alan but this is the best ROM out there, BUT you need to understand how to use this - let me begin: (in no particular order)
To use ozvga you must load midgets version of ozvga for crossbow.
The following applications WILL HANG YOUR UNIVERSAL:
SPB backup (BUT YOU CAN USE SUNNYSOFT V4)
SPB Pocket Plus (sorry!)
Now you don't need anymore the CB dialer skin, microsoft voice command 1.6 or new menu for wm5 because THEY ARE ALL IN THE ROM! (But don't restore your old WM 5 new menu settings file or you will hang the device!)
This little Vietnamese beauty also comes with a new version of XP shutdown, an amazing smart dialer, remote desktop and streaming media player!
The dfferences in the PRO version are:
The addition of the remote desktop & streaming media player
Added to settings is a customer feedback form and in connections is another icon to the communications manager.
Voice commander is mapped to the record button
Other things YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Soft resetting WM 6 is sometimes a two stage affair. This DOES NOT appear to be a bug but rather an (early) characteristic. If you need to reset 3 times or more the application you just loaded is not compatable.
Activesync 4.5 beta has embedded smarts for WM 6! When you synchronise for the first time it will ask you suddenly if you want to maintain wireless conectivity while docked to active sync.
There is also a newer bluetooth stack & system tray icon. If you use TomTom for example you no longer need to map the incoming port. The option has been removed anyway.
To summarize - this version of WM6 is blisteringly snappy, full of great features BUT NEW... IT IS NOT GOING TO WORK THE SAME AS WM5 AND NOT USE ALL THE SAME APPLICATIONS. But the overall result is fantastic in my opinion.
Regards,
Simon Jacobs

HTC TyTN WM6 Upgrade ... Need Help!

Dear all,
I contacted HTC for my device upgrading and ROM updates, and they direct me to this forum.
I have a TyTN unlocked device, and want to upgrade to WM6. I explored all what you posted here but couldn't decide which version and link is suitable for me. Any way, here down my device information, and I'm appreciating any help to upgrade my device to WM6.
Device Information:
Device Name: HTC TyTN (Unlocked)
Language: English
Processor: SC32442A - 400MHz
Memory: 49.05 MB
System: Windows Mobile 5.0 OS 5.1.195 (Build 14955.2.3.0)
That are all information I could get from my device
Need Help my friends.
After all, I beleive that HTC should have an upgrade area to support their devices.
Thank you in advance.
Hi there!
its good to know that HTC assistants sent you here on this forum !!
I can suggest you to go for the wm6 image black 2.5 as its been always the most stable for me, so read the wiki and all the documents to upgrade your hermes to that version.
http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=37&Itemid=26
and don't run in the upgrade, take your time to read everything and if you don't understand something, come back here.

It depends on your personal reasons for upgrading. If you want to upgrade because of more speed and more stability you should try Black 2.5. If you are doing it because of adventuresomeness you should give all of the great roms here a try.
But at least you should try Black 2.5, Duttys V2 and Custels 1.3 to find out which one is the best for you. You should also try different radios to see if theres a difference in your area.
And don't forget the most important object: read mrvanx upgrade guides very very carefully and follow every step exactly.
be aware that the ROMs here are *unofficial* and *unsupported* ROMs.
HTC will NOT help you out if you screw up your device.
if you are unsure about flashing, then stay with the stock ROM.
I have a UK unlocked Tytn and would very strongly recommend Black 2.5.
My first ever ROM upgrade was Black 1.2 and it was soo god. 2.0 was even better and 2.5 better still. Have had no problems, battery life is much better, doesn't lockup/freeze any more, loads more memory available.....i could go on.
Go for it - follow mrvanx's upgrade guide. he makes it very easy
Flashig roms is one way... be careful...
When I first flashed a WM6 Rom on to my HERMES I made sure I read all the preinstall instructions very carefully as I didn't have a clue about flashing. MR VANX's guide is excellent, follow it carefully and you can't go wrong.
I have now successfully flashed numerous ROMS on to my device.
No-one can tell you which is the best ROM as they are all excellent for their own different features and customisations. You will need to try a few and see which you like best.
Good Luck.
I highly doubt
That an HTC representative sent someone here for ROM updates to WM 6.0.
If they did and are caught, they will probably be terminated.
I deal with HTC regularly and they don't condone or encourage our methods of tuning and research.
Be careful out there.
Thank you
Thank you a lot for your replies guys. They helped me a lot. I'll do the upgrade and will back to you with the results. Thanks again.

It always amazes me how corporate structures can be so schizoid. I too have received- from in-the-trenches personel- a pointer to this site specifically for beta testing WM6 Push. Conversely, the moderators here made it clear that management at HTC was a major impetus behind MS's request that the ftp archives be pulled.
The kicker for me is that the Wiki on HTC's US site specifically points to this XDA-developers and those postings are all vetted by someone at HTC USA. I'm thankful for that because that's how I found this site in the first place.
My Upgrading Status
First of all, I would like to add my voice to (teambnet) that I'm thankful for them to made me know this website and forum in the first place.
OK, about my upgrading status guys, I did exactely as shown in mrvanx.org website and did install WM6 Black 2.5, everything is gone fine except one thing, that the button of contact voice tag is not working. When I push that button, it gives me a message "Error opening the shortcut or locating the target filename.", I tried then to assign the shortcut to a program by going to Start --> Settings --> Buttons, but I couldn't find the program that should be assigned. I don't know if my problem are clear or not but I tried to explain as much I could. Any suggestions to solve that?
Thanks all,

I always suspected that secretly HTC were using us as beta testing guinea pigs, now it looks like I was right! And half of the fixes for their bugs are created by developers on this site.
Seriously though, if your Hermes is no longer covered by the original HTC warranty (as mine was from the very first day I got it, since I bought it from an "unauthorized" distributor), then HTC have nothing to lose by pointing someone to this site. They might as well have said, "Flush it down the toilet for all we care..."
John
HTC's wiki is just like ours, anyone can edit it... So i doubt that HTC themselves put a link to XDA on their wiki, but someone else probably did..
You need to install the voice commander CAB located on the first page of BLACK2.5 Then remap the button.
You should read thru the numerous posted before asked already resolved issues. Congrats on the UPGRADE!!!

Hi all,
Thank you stuckes, I did as you told me and everything gone very nice. WM6 is a nice OS, not that much different from WM5 at least for me. But, it's nice. Thank you all for your help in that.
I got a question, when I would to upgrade, there are many versions of WM6, Black2.5 and other versions, where can I find a complete comparison with screenshots of them to decide if I'm gonna change to another one or stick to black 2.5?

Garmin-Asus Nuevifone Forum?

Since some weeks I'm having no a Garmin-Asus Nuevifone M10 device and I'm very happy with it. Meanwhile not only HTC devices are having a own forum on xda devs, Samsung, Sony Ericcson and LG devices are also here.
In my opinion it would be great to have a forum for Nuevifone too but if I'm the only one with a Nuevifone its of course useless.
So my question is: Are there some others with the Nuevifone and if so would it be possible to make a new forum for it?
i just brought a m10 too. but kinda hard to find forums on it. anyone can help??
yeah...pls upon a different forum for ASUS mobiles...i have asus P565 n M10
I also have a nuvifone M10 we should have a seperate forum discussion for M10
I agree
I agree with all you guys. I just bought an m10 and have been fiddling around with it and i must say i'm falling in love. We really should have our own forum. I would really like to dual boot the m10 with winmo 6.5.3 and android 2.0.1 Can anyone tell me:
1. Is it possible?
2. If so, how to go about doing it.
I want to know how to get that mapping software off the Nuvifone and onto my TP2. garmin mobile xt hasn't been updated since 2008. can still get map updates (not legally as garmin no longer supports it, but hooray for the Internet.)
edit
researched that Garmin-Asus M10. Looks like it's not available stateside and that it runs WinMo 6.5.3. That means it has sat nav software on it, and it's processor (MSM7227) looks to be a 600MHz MSM7200/7201A so I bet it can be run on the TP2. Anybody else wanna throw down on a bounty? I'm about to go post in winmo software development.
3 days of usage - M10
Hi all, I got
Asus-Garmin M10 just few days ago - it seems to be great, as all other Asus devices and plus excellent navigation and gps functions from Garmin.
I also think we must have a forum for this device.
Does anybody know how to change software in it to different language? I need to change it from Russian to English. No software on the official web site.
for my previosu device, ASUS P526 I downloaded English firmware from Asus web site, for this one - nothing on the web site.

Does anybody know how to change software in it to different language? I need to change it from Russian to English. No software on the official web site.
for my previosu device, ASUS P526 I downloaded English firmware from Asus web site, for this one - nothing on the web site.

Did you get any offers on the Bounty? Iwouldd be interested in a fully working version that runs on other WM devices and uses the same maps as the GMXT version but with TTS and the other improvements of the M10.
Garmin Mapping Software
Even i've been lookin for a way to extract the map application from my GA M10, but unsuccessful so for. What i have been able to do so far is to figure out how to install original Garmin Navteq maps from another M10 and register it to my device... This was borne out of necessity as i went ahead and formatted my internal 4GB storage in USB mode and lost all map and voice guidance etc...
If anyone else has a similar problem, i will be glad to help you out.
