O2 XDA IIs - is there an *official* ROM upgrade? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Wondering if there's an official rom upgrade?
Read a few scary stories about people ROM upgrading, so just wondered if there was an official upgrade which I *know* will work and not kill anything
Cheers

there is a 1.40 asian rom update, but as o2 in uk are crap, they havent released the upgrade yet.
they will only **** it up with that o2 active crap anyway, choose another 1.40rom, and folllow wiki, u cannot got wrong.

The latest one can be downloaded from the 02 website http://www.seeo2.com/ I just installed it and its working fine

think im being dumb, cant find it on seeo2.com
i know it must be in the o2 connect section somewhere...?
any pointers? cheers mate

Here is the link to the O2 Asia 1.40 ROM update.
http://www.seeo2.com/user/XdaIIs/template/XdaIIs_ROMUpgrade_Jun2005.vm
I think you will need to have a login and valid o2 Asia xda 11s device to access it. If you have an O2 UK xda 2s, you can still download and apply this update from here (our wiki site)
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_1.40.00_Upgrade
Hope this helps
Regards

Cheers Chris
Has anyone tried the wiki one with a uk xda 2s and can confirm its working a-ok?
Thanks again
Aslan

Hi Aslan
Yes, I have the O2 UK XDA2S and have loaded the Asia ROM (see details in my signature block] The only thing you may have to do after loading is to substitute the Caller ID cab file in the extended ROM. You only need to do this if you experience GPRS disconnects after upgrading, which is somewhat dependent on the operator/service provider you are with. Some work fine without the substitution. Who are you with?
Regards
chris

Cheers Chris - well I don't use GPRS so I'm alright I guess!
Although wondering if there's any way to do a backup which i can port over to the new ROM...too much stuff to reinstall!
Any ideas - sprite backup?

HI ASLAN
Backing up shouldn't be a problem... if you just have data you could use xback up or Sprite and back the data up to an sd card or your computer. Do you use Outlook, as that would be another way to do it via active synch. Let me know what you have to back up and I can better advise..
Regards
chris

Hi mate,
Got all the standard contacts/calendar etc which I can do by synching. But also got some progs on:
Pocket Informant
resco file explorer
tomtom navigator
and a few skyscape medical apps.
other bits too but don't really mind having to reinstall those the above are the main ones i use.
Do you know if sprite backup backs up installed programs too? Been havin' a read of this:
http://spritesoftware.crmdesk.com/answer.aspx?id=63&back=browse.aspx#p17

So 02 finally released their 1.40 rom. cool
anyone tried it yet? does it install the dreaded 02 crap as well?
Is there a corporate mode to this rom as well so we can get rid of the 02 software?
does it have everything that the 02 asia rom has to offer?

Hi aslan
I do not believe that Sprite will be able to reinstate your programs. I do not know for sure, but think it unlikely after a reflash.. You could send then an e-mail to the ask a question link on the page you found to be sure though..

Hi alitech
The ROM discussed above is in fact the O2 ASIA ROM 1.40.923. You can load this onto your O2 UK XDA2s using the MAUgrade utility found here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_1.40.00_Upgradeon the wiki site, along with the WWE ROMS that are available. The O2 Asia ROM does not have the O2 Active interface, so no need for Corporate mode  I guess that O2 UK will one day release its own 1.40 update for the xds 2s, which is rumoured to include a Blackberry client. Hopefully this will be before the xda2s makes it into the Science Musiem
Hope this helps

O2 UK - Most Bone Idle Organisation In UK!
Hi
I've been waiting for an official upgrade as well, but I think we will be waiting an eternity. O2 does not care about its customers one little bit - thats why we are all stuck with ancient, buggy roms while others enjoy the bug fixes in newer roms.
Many users, myself included dont have the time to fiddle around making foreign roms work.
I guess I shall have to bite the bullet and install the O2 asia rom, and prey the unit still works afterwards.
My contract ends next month, and after the 'O2 XDA IIs' episode I have had with O2, I shall never, ever pass any money their way again.
To be honest, I reckon you are far far better paying the extra money up front, buying an imate and choosing your contract yourself. They do tend to release updates in a timely mannar - which results in much less lost hair!!
The HTC universal looks nice, but there us *no way* I am gonna be paying that sort of cash for it!!
Nigel

Hi Veletron
Yes, I can't say I blame you. (and who came up with the idea to use light blue special character keys with a blue backlight I wonder?] I am actually thinking about switching to a !Qtek 9100, aka Wizard. They will be unlocked and available 5 Oct. Qtek have also been good with ROM updates I think.

sent my xda 2 to o2(uk) for repairs, returned UK Rom 1.66

This, I assume, is the very latest UK rom, I had 1.60 before that. Getting the machine tomorrow, will post exact rom then, however I do not know how to copy it and send it you guys, can anyone explain in the simplest term how to do this? I have XP, Thanks
out of interest, what was wrong with the XDAII?
Reply
it would freeze and only a hard reset could fix this when connected to a Socket SDIO card, this would happen every 3 or 4 days.

If it's arriving tomorow, how do you already know it's 1.66 mate?
And just for interest, I seem to recall that the GERMAN version of the O2 ROM was just released last week at 1.66 - I wonder if this is a version of this for a UK market, or if O2 are about to release 1.66 over here too.
Anyone know how he can 'reverse assemble' it from his device so he can share it?
i had the same freezing issues but my device was 1.66
but i'm pretty sure that the freezing was due to a 3th party program
been awhile since it froze last
and i doubt it could be a hardware issue since hardreset always works
Mikey Collins - keep us posted on the outcome when it arrives please...
What program caused the crashing ? PocketWinc?
And I know it is coming with 1.66 because I called them. Any idea what sort of programs could have caused this?

What sort of programs could have caused this? The new upgrade you mean or the re-flash?
Could be a number of things mate, though usually a hard reset will cure all your woes.
Let us know what the actual real numbers are, for your ROM, extended ROM etc, when it actually arrives, as what O2 say on the phone, and what happens in real life, are noted for how far apart they tend to be where O2 is concerened.
And there will be an awful lot of people interested in your info, so keep us posted.

I emailed O2 Data Support about this, to see when or if they were intending to release 1.66.
This is my reply back from them:
Hello Mr xxxxxxx,
Thank you for your email,
After querying this with our technical team, we would like you to provide
evidence of the Rom 1.66 occurring, as we believe this not to be the case.
If you are experiencing problems with your XDA, you can replace the device
under warranty via your customer services team.s

So can you give us some more info, or reply to me off board Mikey? As I suspect it is YOU that is correct, and O2 wrong, and would like to challenge them over this.

Sounds good if you are right, and yes i am as critical about o2 as the rest of you, but ive found that there is an easyish way to get through to o2 on the fones if u need sumthing, call their staff accounts people on
0800131211
and since its freefone (in the uk @ least, i guess they have this sorta service elsewhere) it dont matter how long ur on the fone with them.
neway, will it be possible to upload the rom to the site?
Smiley
They are all shipping with 1.66 now
my girlfriend just got a new xd2, same OM as mine.
My xda2 which I am selling on this site also came with the new rom after they replaced the motherboard. I dont know if its me but the screen seems so much better, on a par now with the ipaq 3900 series, bright, clear, good depth of colour etc. Its for sale in the stocking up section of this site if anybody is interested. £350 Uk.
I just purchased an XDA II yesterday, and it also came with ROM version 1.66.00WWE (Incidently, the ROM date shows as 20th Feb 04)

I repeatedly Emailed O2 about this, and eventually there response was that more recent versions of the XDA2 ship with a slightly different screen (hardware wise).
New drivers are needed for this, and this is the ONLY difference in 1.66, which is not available for public download.
I emailed them back to tell them what a load of old cobblers, and that it includes a Cleartype tuner and more.
They went decidedly quiet at that point.
Any chance that O2 have fixed the Handsfree dll problem in Version 1.66? Can you get mp3 / Tom tom audio etc. to come out of the bottom connector? (Many people have a problem with the XDA II that they can only get Phone call audio to go to the bottom connector, even though the T-Mobile ROM's apparently don't have this problem.)
You can use a tool provided free on this site in the tools and software section to download your ROM to an SD card, and I assume that it can also download it to your PC.
I'm by no-means an expert, but I've had a go at fiddling with it so far and this is what I've found...
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/CompleteTools
Follow the XDA Tools link and download the program, tell it to read the ROM from the device and Put it on your PC, then you can post it here.
I know this program worked with flashing the ROM from my XDA, never tried it with an XDA II though, although I will try it when I get home tomorrow.
There were a couple of more difficult to use tools provided for the XDA II that need you to log into the 'Bootloader' on the device using a command prompt (Like DOS) style program providxed by HTC (the manufacturers of the XDA and XDA II) but I can't remember where they were and I'm using my girlfriends crappy tinternet connection at the moment and can't be bothered to search the site. I'll have a more detailed set of instructions posted asap if I can find out how to do it all over the weekend.
Other than that, if anyone else can post details of how to do it, I'd be very grateful cos it all seems a lot more complicated with the XDA II to change the ROM than it was with the XDA.
Cheers,
Rom version 1.66.00 wwe
Guys be vvvvv careful when messing with this rom. If you attempt to update it to sort out the caller photograph recognition bugs you are in for a shock. Now you may already now which versions are the "older" versions but I did not and updated with the current official update from the O2 site. My XDA2 is now a one week old doorstop. Any suggestions anybody. I did back up to my SD card before the update but do not have a card reader...............yet!

Do not understand this WM6 and hermes issue

hey Guys,
I'm pretty new to this kinda stuff and i just got a Dopod 838 Pro, im guessing this is the Australian version of the Hermes, its manufactured by HTC. here in Australia for some reason we have like 3 different brand names for them but their all the same!.... anyways to the point, i read all these different threads with all these different WM6 versions on it and i have no idea anymore which is the right one?!?!?!
i want to upgrade my dopod to the WM6 but i don't no which OS to choose? which is the best atm and why is it so hard to get them working? its not like just a copy of windows xp and you install it?
Also what is LVSW mean or whatever ppl are saying on here lol
Latest Version Software? haha
So yea which copy do i use?
Hi,
I'm using Dopod 838Pro too.
There are pros and cons for all the WM6, it all depends on what you want (more embedded software? more memory?)
As for myself, I've been using XDA Live v0.1 then v0.2. I'm still waiting for v0.3 I have not tried the rest, because I think I prefer XDA Live and I'll wait for kyphur
Thanks!

best thing to do is get onto Hard-SPL then start trying them all out before finally settling on one and lobbing all your crap into it.
I would even go one step further (which I have) and purchase Sprite Back and perform an Update Restore .. this will allow you to flash new ROMS and in one restore you have all your apps back...
The Update Restore function allows you to change OS's or devices and restore all of your applications. (Just be sure to follow the steps every time)

Remigi,
There is some good advise in all of the above. The only thing you can really do to be honest is read all of the forums relating to the upgrade process, especially the wiki!!!! Then once you feel you are adequately ready take the plunge. An extra piece of advise that I will dispense if you don't mind as I am struggling with it at the moment is;
Copy down all of your data settings and connection details - or confirm (via the forums) that the settings that are out here all work and will get you back sending mms / gprs / wap(?) etc etc. I flashed my 2 day old Orange M3100 (same thing as you just branded for UK) and I am still trying to get all of this functionality back properly.
As for which ROM to use..... I am using the one mentioned in my sig block (the second one) the black v1.2. It absolutely dumps all over the bog standard carrier rom!!!
Hope this helps

This is good advice...but what are you missing? I am on Orange UK and it takes less than five minutes to re-enter GPRS/WAP/MMS settings and load the sdk certs and the smsproviders.dll (to get the voicemail notifications) following a rom update.
so whats the difference between them all? like atm i have the standard WM5 Hutchinson's three software on there which has nothing special apart from every time u put a simcard in it downloads the settings automatically.... called network setup or something... but yea.. what the diff between like vanilla and xda and black and all those... isnt it all just WM6?

Upgrade to WM6???

I have a Cingular 8525 and it is unlocked and I use T-Mobile service with it. I see that T-mobile has released the WM6 upgrade...http://home.businesswire.com/portal...d=news_view&newsId=20070502006572&newsLang=en
My question is should I upgrade using the T-mobile version or should i wait and get the cingular version of WM6? Also, is it worth the trouble to upgrade? Im a pretty heavy user of all the features of the phone.
Also, what software would you recommend me using to backup my programs on my phone if i do upgrade?
Thanks in advance,

I would say "Yes" Go ahead and upgrade your phone with that Rom.
Is it worth the trouble; well Tell us the trouble you have after you upgrade to the t-mobile rom.
As for Backup software I would suggest ArcServe 7. Oh wait I think ArcServe has a newer mobile version!
Seriously, you should read the wiki and maybe a few threads before upgrading (or should I say bricking) your phone.

As I understand it, Cingular has a load of bloatware installed - but if you use this stuff then the t-mobile ROM won't include a lot of it and you'll need to install it by cab files. A lot of the cabs are included in some of the xda-dev WM6 ROMS. Using the Cingular ROM should also keep you in warranty if anything goes wrong.
If you're a heavy user of the standard phone functions then either the Cingular or t-mobile ROMS should be ok (but remember to make a note of your wireless/data/mms settings or get the cab file to re-install them - maybe here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_provider_cabs ).
With both of the above ROMS you get the official support through the customer service help lines. This will generally be limited to a twat who knows ****-all about phones except that the one superglued to his ear hurts after a 12 hour shift.
If you want good WM6 ROMS with good support (not always immediate but often quicker than queueing for a helpdesk) then try Black or LSVW. Both are great and most annoyances or problems have been found and already resolved.
As for the backup software, all the stuff I need backed up is already synced with outlook. The actual program files I always re-install after a ROM upgrade - I think this is the safest way. A piece of software which is always mentioned when people ask about backups is SPB backup http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/?en. I can't recommend it because I don't use it, however it seems to be highly regarded.

Have you read a frickin' thing in your 40+ posts?
Load that Dash ROM on anything, right? ****, put it on your Panasonic wireless 5.8 GHz phone while you're at it.
Gimme some of what you're smokin', dude.
You know that the MDA is a Wizard, and your 8525 is a Hermes, right? You will brick your phone if you don't follow the instructions for a Hermes.
As for bloatware, Black 3.0 is the newest and fastest ROM out there.
t-mo mda is for WM5.0?I
i looked at the "do i need this upgrade?" and it says it's WM5.0. Is anyone sure that this is for WM6.0 and not 5.0? The dash upgrade clearly says 6.0.
Oops, I brick my phone. . . Perhaps not. Was it a wizard or hermes? I don't know. Just gimme a link to some WM6 roms and I will flash them iusing Vista. Probably more than one rom at a time.
p.s. Please don't take this seriously. Enjoy!

That T-Mo was releasing WM 6.0 for the MDA. Can you get into the OS.NB file and check the build dates?
Otherwise, look up Faria's Wizard ROM and unlock your phone. I used Faria's on my K-Jam before I switched to a TyTN.

Official WM6 has broken my TomTom PLUS subscription

guys,
I upgraded to the official ANZ WM6 ROM, and it has changed my TomTom device ID which means I now cannot use the Traffic service (I already changed the device a few months back when I bought my Trinity).
I mailed TT support and they say then need a letter from my phone manufacturer explaining that the internal device ID has changed with the new ROM. TomTom base their device ID on the internal device ID (according to their support folks).
Has anyone else encountered this issue?
Can anyone point me to an article or suggest a way to get some info from Dopod, HTC, or Microsoft about what WM6 does regarding device ID?
Thanks in advance.
Don't feel that bad It happened to me too. I contacted Tomtom guys and they were happy to give me a new code. But guess what, if you happen to do a hard reset and reinstall Tomtom, the code changes again. When I contacted Tomtom about this issue they said the following:
Dear Gilbert,
Thank you for contacting TomTom support regarding the difficulty that you are experiencing trying to install NAVIGATOR 6 on your PDA. We are glad to assist!
The new NAVIGATOR 6 is compatible with Windows mobile 6, although, it is not compatible with your HTC P3600. Thank you again for contacting us, if you have any further questions or comments, please e-mail or call us at 1-866-486-6866 Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 7 pm EST.

______________________________________________________________
How lovely. I am already pissed about this as I cannot use my device with the current version for the Trinity.
Cheers,
Gilbert
thanks Gilbert- but that's terrible! I've had quite a few problems with TT6 going wrong on my P3600. Even when I downloaded the specific 6.03 revision.
At least you got somewhere with TomTom.
Do you have a support number I could give to them (as reference) by any chance?
cheers
I have Orange SPV M700 branded version of the Trinity which I bought off ebay & unlocked using tools available on this site & loaded the HTC 3600 rom. I loaded my existing TTN6 & had to reactivate but all went well as I was past 6 months since the 1st activation.
Anyway its been less than a month & I've now loaded the Dopod WM6 onto my phone but couldn't activate TTN6 due to new device code. I emailed TomTom on Thursday saying that I updated my Dopod D810 to official Dopod WM6 update. They emailed me new activation code today & all is working fine.
The Dopod ROM has a bug that changes the TTN Device Code; the other ROM's, official or otherwise don't seem to have the bug.
Once the new ROM is installed, the new Device Code ought to remain the same, even after a hard reset, but there will be problems if you later upgrade/downgrade the ROM, because the DC will probably revert back to the original one.
I've gone SPV M700 Orange -> HTC WM5 Official -> Mun-Rus WM6 SE and TE -> Dopod Beta WM6 (changed Device Code) -> Mun-Rus TE (Device Code reverted to original)
TomTom did offer me a new Activation Code, but required a copy of the device proof of purchase, and it took 2 weeks, so I reverted to the Mun-Rus ROM.
Your previous Device/Activation codes will all be visible on ttcode.com as long as you have your map Product Code so changing back to the original Device Code is OK for activating the maps. The problem is that even if you can reactivate the maps, TomTom Home will not let you revert to an older device association on your account, so even if TTN6 works, TT Home will not.
There is currently no fix for this- TomTom Support say they don't allow regression of account associations in TT Home.
For these reasons I've now abandoned TomTom in favour of iGO2006
Great another reason for not going down the Dopod ROM way.
It is not just TT... WM6 upgrade changes the Code of all my applications
Another way to approach it: each hard reset lets you download a new city map ;-)

It is not just TT... WM6 upgrade changes the Code of all my applications

There are a number of methods for generating device codes- based on IMEI, Owner Name, Device Name and other, deeper methods!
A lot of my programs have a new device code with each ROM, but the developers generally issue a new license without problems.
The trouble with TomTom is that previously, the Device Code has remained the same through all ROM updates, and they have linked their antipiracy policies to that. The recent problem with TT and device code changes has meant they have been caught off guard, and initially refused to do anything about it. I think the attitude is beginning to change, with the release of an 'official ROM' that changes the Device Code, but they still can't (or won't?) handle reverting your TT Home account to an older Device Code.
Don't sweat it!

guys,
I upgraded to the official ANZ WM6 ROM, and it has changed my TomTom device ID which means I now cannot use the Traffic service (I already changed the device a few months back when I bought my Trinity).

Hey guy! Don't sweat it! My TomTom works perfectly in WM6. How reassuring does that make you feel? Probalby very little if any! So don't sweat it! Just try updating your TomTom here:

It worked for me, and don't forget to give credit and possibly a donation to Luigi for making this all possible!

Hey Guys! Thanks for this. Athena user strayed here and stumbled upon this. What a relief. I was about to pour out some invectives on TomTom.Wrote to them almost 3 weeks ago and got the same response as others above. Thanks for sharing. By the way who is Luigi
I have 3 subscriptions of TT, but It looks like they don't appreciate their genuine customers

Here is the link to where you can find Luigi's Rom page. Believe it or not his page was banned because he wasn't able to write in English! Now his page is used for "informational" purposes!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1292874
guys thanks, BUT a few points.
1) My TomTom works fine- it is TomTom TRAFFIC which doesn't.
2) I really want an official HTC ROM (and anyway don't fancy resetting it again!).
3) My Italian is not so good, so it would need to be English ;-)
For these reasons I need TomTom to add my new device code to my account.
It's coming up to 10 days since I logged the call- I've had lots of responses, asking for a letter of proof, and saying it has been reset (but it still doesn't work).

Not exactly. No-one was banned. The thread has been closed because this person was just ignoring again and again the rules of this forum.
hello
like everybody , since i have upgrade to WM6 , my device code has changed.
So my traffic option doesn't work anymore
but where is the problem ? i have only changed this device code on the site tomtom.com and now i can use this option in WM6
perhaps i don't understand the thread , but why have you write to tomtom ?
Regards
hi - you can only change the device code ONCE every 6 months.
Then you have to write to support.
I bought my Trinity a few months back, and changed from my M600....
ach so .......
oups ...
so if i want to reverse back to WM5 , i have to wait or write to tomtom
thank you for this information
exactly :-(
I don't understand TomTom's logic.....

[08 11 2007] (Vanilla) Debranded WM5 AKU3.3 T-Mob rom

Sorry for the removal. Please read reason for editing.
good work, I'll test soon
Thanks
Well done! everything working as it should, no need to tweak gprs and previous splash is a nice plus! Thanks again.
Very Good ROM! Thanks
I just installed the ROM on an O2 XDA. So far it works thanks!
I used the trick to soft restart at the countdown to prevent all the guff being installed.
The main reason for this upgrade was the device using the latest official O2 ROM from I think 2006 the bluetooth does not work properly with my jag hands-free. But with this ROM it seems to work so thanks very much. At last I can use my phone in the car.
The exact version I flashed was using the CID bypassed version, copied in the 3 files from the official Tmobile then replaced one of them with the vanilla install. This I gathered was the thing to do after much forum reading.
I have a few of questions:
How do I select any of the cabs that I skipped installing and install them? Where are they? How do I know what they are and if they are any use?
My old ROM based on AKU2(.2?) had a program called task manager which I used to see what was running and end it (usually the media player). Has this been replaced in this version and if so what by and if not where can I get it?
Re:
PsiDoc

Phone skin debrand T-mobile?
@Z£Y$
Let me know how you get on with this mate. Particularly have a look at the MMS settings with the 3UK rom. It went a bit weird with me on the rom install.

It says in the 1st post.....
It's basically the latest (September 2007) AKU3.3 T-Mobile rom but with all the horrid looking branding ripped out and the god awful dialer pad reskinned with O2's much nicer one.
Is that a bit clearer for you?
Psi
Congrats on the new ROM PSIdoc!
Old story back again with this rom: green light flashing but device off line, no incoming or outgoing calls untill soft reset and randomly same problem faced again.
it'a so good that i actually want someone to come up with bug report.i dont know about the green light flashing.i dont have them?
@tailazoom
What radio version are you using mate? I know that 1.18 has some known crashing problems with WM5. The original rom was bundled with 1.17. Perhaps downgrading to 1.15 may sort it out as I know that os rock solid. I am using said bundled 1.17 and have so far only had 1 problem with a GPRS failure to connect. I couldn't pinpoint it 100% to the radio, so I am waiting for it to happen again.
Just my own thoughts.

Thanks PsiDOC for answering. I'm using radio 1.17 and with the official t-mobile wwe aku3.3 i have no problems except:
1) iexplorer unable to connect unless i use a program to tweak gprs settings
2) unable to force manually GSM band
what can i do with this file?how can i install it on my qtek 9000?
This looks as though it could be just what I need, rather than going to WM6What was taken out from this vanilla version compared to the full flavoured one.
Will you be doing a full flavoured version with your tweaks to get rid of the awfull branding stuff. Regards John
JohnWB,
The vanilla version is as the rom came from the OEM, in this case T-Mobile, with nothing added into it. The only things changed in the rom is all the T-Mobile branding is removed and the Dialler Skin replaced, purely beus it was painful on the eyes!
A fully loaded version means that extra apps have been added to the rom that saves you the trouble and the storage space. This can be pretty much anything with tweaking of the rom.
I am currently testing this rom with a few apps added in the rom, including:
Opera 8 web Browser,
Ps Shut XP. (WM Reboot Tool)
Registry Editor
Contacts Backup
SMS Message Backup
Notepad
Mobile Office 2007 (Word, Exel, Powerpoint & One Note) - Still Buggy Though
And a few others
Am also thinking about reskinning the entire rom with a "The Matrix" style theme as the default. Maybe I have said too much here....
Sadly am working 10 hours a day, 7 days a week at the mo as we have a big job on where I work, so not much time to progress it at the mo but I am doing a bit where I can.
Psi
Thanks for the info Psi, just what I needed to know, John
i haven't Rapid
