Backpack connector pinout - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I have bought a pair of faulty backpacks on ebay for my XDA IIi.
One of them is totally shot, the other kind of works but there is a bad connection on the connector that attaches to the XDA.
Does anyone have info on the pinout of this connector please?
I checked the XDA II service manual to no avail.

Hi Mr Fusion
I'm afraid not an answer but a sharing of problems - I have lost my backpack lead and can't get another. Did you find the pinout? Any ideas where I might get the connector?
Cheers
Jon

I was just looking for the pinout when I saw this post! amazing coincidence.
Anyway, I was wondering about making my own Wifi backpack, or possibly squeezing an sdio wifi card inside the case on this connector.
But, I need the pinout before I can even hope to try.
To the guy with the dead backpack, how much did you pay? want to sell it cheap to me to experiment with?

Any of you who wants the complete kit plus 1Gb compact flash pm me.

Where to I find an External Antenna for XDA II?

Since I'm not an expert on antennas I've had a hard time finding an Antenna for the XDA II. I'm actually looking for an antenna I can use in my home to get better reception. Does anyone know where I can buy one that plugs into the back of the device? I've already noticed much better reception with my XDA II over the XDA I ... with an external antenna it should be awesome. Thanks.
connectors
The connector was a standard unit used in the old 'carphones' I used to have loads of them, I worked on them from 89 to 96. I cant remember the name for them, they should be quite available, try www.cpc.co.uk they might have them.
external antenna - where to find?
I would love to find an external antenna also for the same purpose - stationary at home for better reception. Thanks for any help

I found out the specifications of the external antenna "receptacle" from the i-Mate folks (shown below). I've attached the PDF he sent. Now I have to find an appropriate antenna. I'm also thinking about getting a repeater, but I've heard they're expensive ($500-1000).
Thank you for the enquiry! Well, regarding your question; I am sending you a file (as an attachment) that should give you all the specifications of the external antenna. For any further enquiries, please contact us, we will be glad to assist you!

I cannot seem to open your attachment.
Bought my external at Radio Shack. The external unit cost $29, and the adapter was $10. Be careful with the adapters. Have the guy open it and make sure it fits right. Mine was for a motorola, and didn't have a black bushing around the base that others on the same rack did. The others didn't fit, but the one minus bushing did.
Sorry about the file. It's my first try to upload to the XDA Site. Here's the file from one of my websites.
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/olliesshop/XDAStuff/RFConnector.pdf
Also, Thanks for the input about Radio Shack. I went there earlier and they said they didn't have anything. But it probably was the lack of knowledge of the salesman. I'll go to a different store and be more persistant. Thanks.
i had no problems saving the pdf file to my disk and opening it using acrobat reader
from the first uploading that is
Hey dadarkmcse - since you purchased one at Radio Shack that actually works . . . what's the part number? Might take a bit of the guess work out of it for the rest of us!
Thanks!

I knew you would ask that... and being me... i threw out the packaging. Let me swing by Radio Shack's site and see if i can find it...
17-345 is the base unit, and it was either 17-346 or 17-348 that was the cable for the unit. Try to find both at your radio snack and have the sales man open the package and plug it into the phone. The guy at the radioshack I went to was more than happy to do this, even though he had never seen my xda ii.
Good thing too - i HATE when they look at the thing and salivate all over it... quite annoying
Yea . . . I HATE when that happens. I just carry around a plastic bag to slip my i-mate into before I let anyone hold it. That way, it's 'drool proof'!
can you take some photos it?
What . . . you mean pictures of my i-mate in a plastic bag?
Oh . . . OK - I'd like to see pictures of the antenna and cable too!
Thanks dadarkmcse
I went by another Radio Shack on the way home tonight and they gave me that "Deer in the Headlight" look. They suggested going to AT&T ... arghhhh!!! I'm going to look at Radio Shack on-line and see if I can find something.
I finally found out the connector/adapter we need. I was told by my local Electronics Store / Experts that if I can get it to an SMA connector I'm all set. So after many phone calls and a few weeks of searching ... I finally found, I believe the only U.S. source for the adaptor.
This is the link to the page of the catalog http://dkc3.digikey.com/pdf/T041/0248.pdf. I ordered, from the top part of the page:
Switching Connector - #5
SMA Adaptor to Male
H2807-ND
MS-145-HRMP-A
www.digikey.com Toll-Free: 1-800-344-4539 • Phone: 218-681-6674 • Fax: 218-681-3380
I hope this works, since it cost $30.80 with postage. Now I need to go get an actual antenna that connects to SMA.
Thats the adapter, right? So what else do you need to make an antena, just coax cable?
:?
I haven't bought it yet, but my understanding is I need a Coaxial Cable with an SMA connector on one end and an antenna that attaches to the other end. I plan on buying a normal "glass mounted" type antenna, like they put on car windows and enough cable I can run it from my desk outside the window. The store I go to has a few different Car Kits that include the cable and antenna. We'll see how it goes.
Sorry to be boring, have you got a website for the type of antenna? Its just I guess????? in the UK i should be able to get the connector type from somewhere? RS or Farnells, or maybe maplins (there a bit like your Radio Shack) but the antenna I am not sure,
thanks in advance
Jim
as said up top www.cpc.co.uk they have loads of aerials, glass mount etc. click http://custom1.farnell.com/cpc/product.asp?catalog_name=CPC+Catalogue&product_id=267273 for a page i found. I couldn't find the MS-147 on their site though.

How strong is your Google-fu? O2 Car kit pinout needed..

Yes..
I need the pinout of the O2 XDA II car kits RJ45 female connector.
I am close: http://home.teleport.com/~n3eg/rsgps.htm
But this has 6 pins and a different shape on the GPS connector..
I have a 4 pin RJ 45 style female connector..
Can anyone help me out?
(If we find it, we should add it to the Wiki as well...)
Doesn't anyone have info on this?
Does anyone have any idea of where I can get it, whom I should contact?
i will have a look monday for you.
John
GREAT!
Tahn you SOOO much!
applecom
Did you find out anything?
I still haven't been able to figure this thing out...[/b]
i think that you're connector is actually an RJ11 or RJ13. RJ45 has 8 conductors, the other two have six and four, but which, I forget. It may help you in your quest.... Good Luck!

I have no idea how much a motherboard would cost - fire a price and if it makes sense for me, I'm interested as my headphone jack is gone and I can't find it on its own.
Nice little store
If you would like to replace your main board there is a store by my house that has every peice that you need to build a new one. I live in taiwan. The parts range from $1.00-10.00. So, if you are in need of a special part let me know, maybe I can help.
Hi Cobb,
That would be great - I'm really looking for a headphone jack port as mine's gone and I had to eliminate it as the Uni was under the impression I had headphones connected at all time.
If you can check the price of this out, it would be cool.
Tks.
Sure

It is around $1.00-2.00 US. Just to let you know I used the female headphone connection from my Walkman. I will try to post a complete price list for the universal.
The parts are really cheap here, but sending them is not. Does anyone have any ideas how I could send replacement parts, and keep the price reasonable.
Any part that you want to replace should be less than $5.00 with exception to the screen, and the external housing.
For those of you with a broken USB female jack. While replacing mine I noticed that USB's are pretty standard. There seems to be two common types, I used the one from a 4port usb hub. I not had any problems yet.
I hope this helps. The prices I listed are for a single piece.
I have a full unit, everything is fine except for a usb connector that is FUBAR, Looking to get rid of the entire unit so I can buy a new one, shoot me a PM if anyone would like to purchase it or are selling a working unit.

Hi Cobb, how about that price list??? Just my guess, if parts are SO cheap, no transportation can be expensive!!! LOL

Need new handset to fit car cradle

Hi there - I'm new to the forum.
I own an Orange SPV M1500 which I think is what you'd term a Himalaya here.
My partner bought me a great new car kit which has the typical thin xda connector port in it, but now the phone is behaving badly. The screen is wonky in several places and is not responding to taps.
My dilemma is this - Orange do not provide these phones any more and they don't provide phones with the same port connector on the bottom either.
So I either have to get rid of the cradle or somehow get another phone with this type of connector.
Does anyone know the current list of phones with this kind of connector? Or where I might be able to get hold of a replacement?
Thanks in advance.
I'm not too sure, but with most car kits you can buy replacement cradles, which i believe are relatively cheap compared to replacing the whole of the car kit, what car kit is it? perhaps a quick google search along the lines of replacement cradles might turn up something

External aerial for O2 Orbit

Hi, had a look in the manual and a quick search here but I can't find out what kind of adaptor I need to connect a FME terminated external aerial to my Orbit. TIA.
Great forum, very helpful BTW (just found out about dual sim holders... )
Aerial
Hi The specification for an external aerial seems to be confusing - it took me a long time to actually get something that fits. John, at 'GPS Antenna only' in Ebay, has got GPS aerials that do, and may be able to help you further
Thanks but I couldn't find anything on Ebay -- do you have a link?
Aerials
Hi. Sorry about that. That was the name of his shop. Try this.. http://search.ebay.co.uk/ws/search/MemberSearchResult?userid=londoncolour
This should take you to his shop. He really was very good when he was trying to get me a GPS aerial - we must have tried 4 or 5 different ones that according to the specifications, were 'supposed' to be correct. I know that he also contacted HTC, and what they told him was wrong as well, but John bought an Orbit himself, and eventually found the correct one. He really couldn't have done more - excellent supplier, highly recommended, and great value.
Thanks, but he just directed me to the GPS aerial he had for sale. Have contacted HTC Europe, see what they come up with.
http://www.gerry-mobilfunk.de/artik...hluss_einer_externen_Antenne_KFZ-Antenne.html
It's only in German language, but I hope it helps anyway.
As far as I know, the connector should be an MS-147-C(LP)-2
Thanks for that -- I've dropped him an email. That part number for the aerial doesn't come up much on Google...
I should qualify that: the MS-147-C(LP)-1 type does the 2 doesn't seem to exist...
Sorry, that seems to be right. I've got that information from expansys webpage.
Have a look at the data sheet
http://www.hirose.co.jp/cataloge_hp/e35801505.pdf
Hi Peter, so you think it is the 1 I'm looking for?
I've asked Hirose for a free sample of
MS-147-C(LP)-1 and MS-147-HRMJ-1 for validation.
GPS Antenna Adaptor
I was in Radiop Shack and found adaptor # 17-349 connects to the P3300 (aka Artemis) on one end and has a standard Antenna cable connector on the opposite end.

Not sure if it works as I have not connected it to a GPS antenna itself but it' gets you past the hard part (connecting to the phone)
Original GPS Antenna
Original Orbit GPS Antenna

It was an external aerial for the phone socket I was after, but thanks anyway.
