When first using the XDA II2 the storage area had around 43mb of free
space with the persavebackup folder and a few small files.
Yesterday I was having a couple of problems with the device and
performed a restore using xbackup from a backup taken on monday and
cleared the Storage area leaving just the persavebackup that contained
a few 1kb small files. However according to the memory applet in
control panel Storage was still using 18.49MB RAM. I had a look in
the storage folder with file explorer and even with the show all files
checked I could not see anything other than the persavebackup with a
few kb's worth of files in it and I could not get all of my work
documents back onto the Storage area because there was now only 24mb
left for me to use? Before the restore I used to have 43mb. I always
run the xbackup utility to a 512MB SD Storage Card so it was not the
backup file taking up the space.
I then performed a hard reset to see if this helped. Once all the o2
applications had reloaded I checked with the memory applet and with
just the persavebackup I was still using 18.49MB of the 43mb Storage
before I tried to restore any of my files.
I then took this a step further and reapplied the O2 1.31 ROM to see
if this would fix the issue and again checked the memory applet as
soon as the O2 applications had been installed but again 18.49 MB of
the 43mb already being used leaving me just 24MB?
Does anyone know what could be wrong with the device could their be a hidden file/folder in Storage I can't see but shouldn't replacing the ROM
clear Storage or has some of the Storage memory gone down and do I
need to return the device?

Hi all,
Can someone please explain to me how the memory is configured in the wizard ? When I look in the Settings>>Memory>>main, I can see that I have Storage memory ( 42.55 Total) and Program memory ( 44.01 Total)
In both areas I have almost 25mb free, what is actually stored in each ? Where is the ROM stored ?
I have read about the 'Extended Memory' is this in one of these or is there another area ? I have read that it is possible to unlock the extended memory, what exactly does that mean, what can I do with this unlocked memory ?
Is there a way to store programs is a memory area where they will not get deleted after a hard reset ?
Hope some one can clarify these points to me.
Chees AZ
Here is the explanation. It is the same for all WM5 based phones:
1) Program memory - This is your RAM. Just like in the PC it is the memory used to run programs. Part of it will always be used by the OS and other things you have running in the background, which is why you never get all the 64MB printed on the box.
2) Storage memory - This is like your hard disk. It's actually flash memory (just like disk on key) and is used to store files, settings, and all the outlook databases. It is deleted when you hard reset the device.
3) Extended ROM - This is another partition of the flash memory, but unlike storage memory it is hidden and read only. Usually the cellular provider puts it's customization cabs there. If you check the Wizard section of the wiki you will find a tool that will make this partition visible and writable so you can use it just like a built-in storage card. It's contents will not be erased during hard reset, but it will become hidden and read only again.
4) ROM - This is where your OS is stored. It isn't really ROM, but another partition of the same FLASH that contains storage and extended ROM, except it is always hidden and can only be written to by special programs (like the ROM updater). The files there are organized in a special way so they are ready to run and you can see most of them in your windows directory.
On the box of your (and most new devices) it says 128MB ROM. About 64 of those are the OS, another 10MB extended ROM and the rest is storage.
I was recording a meeting using notes, I do this a few times a week w/out problems.
I got a pop up message saying my storage card mem. was full, even though I had 2GB left on the storage card and 50MB left on the phone's internal mem.
The message told me to go to start>Tools>File Explore....and delete some things from my storage card, then go back to notes via Start>Tools>Notes... and the file would be automatically saved on the newly cleared space.
I did it, and the file was automatically saved on the storage card mem., with 2GB of free memory left.
However, now the phones internal memory say 0.09MB, when it originally had 50MB free.
I thought perhaps the original audio file might have been temporary saved on the internal mem., while I cleared mem. on the storage card, as the pop up message directed.
But, so fare I have found nothing new on the device or it's internal mem., nothing that could have taken up that 50MB. I double checked the audio files, and they are on the storage card, I even removed them from the storage card using my desktop, but still the phone thinks that that 50MB is in use...
Tried a few soft resets and cleartemp files program... nothing has changed.
Anyone know what's going on or experience something similar?
Any suggestions would be appreciated to help me avoid a hard reset.
Thanks
I've noticed that my computer recognizes all the drivers and my SGS3, but the Internal Storage folder for my phone seems to be either not showing hidden files or reporting storage file sizes incorrectly. My phone is rooted and my computer is set to display all hidden files/folders, however my Internal Storage says 9.58GB free out of 12GB. I recently had to re-flash CM9 and a kernel, but before the re-flash the remaining file was usually around 10-11GB. I haven't added anything extra since restoring everything back to where it was before only now when I select all the files inside the folder and go to properties it shows all the contents as 200MB which is what you would expect with a fresh ROM flash and a handful of apps. Question is, how do I go about seeing what's taking up the rest of the space?
please help i cant install apps any more because it says "insufficient storage available"
i used apps 2 rom which transfers data to rom and after a month i deleted some apps and i free up my internal storage up to 2.2 gb
and after that i removed my apps from rom and they took a little space to my internal storage, still i have 2.1 gb free but it cannot download apps
My rom free: 316.6 mb
My internal storage free: 2.1 gb
But still cannot download an app
I have it Rooted. i know advanced in android

Some apps look for percentage available instead of MB available or some nonsense.
Could also be that it needs to install some secured data, and that's going into a place you don't have enough space.
Also, if you had an app installed on external memory at some point, and you try to reinstall it, you'll get that error. Check your Application Manager for any apps that have the memory card icon on them. Those can cause problems.
Personally, I use Link2SD Plus, which requires an SD card. This allows you to move whole applications to a second partition of the SD card. Works well with the tab 3, and leaves me with lots of free space.
I'm assuming when you say ROM space free, you mean System partition space free? I only have about 9MB free on mine and it causes no problems.
Have had this issue on my phone before because the ROM itself locked the device as read-only, causing any app to give that error, and had to flash it again.
I had a bunch of unknown junk cluttering my user/data partition (they're the same physical area on the device), and had to wipe the "internal storage" and "data" from a custom recovery after backing up my data I cared about.
Hopefully this is informative, and hopefully someone else can be more helpful
Good luck to you

i dont know what it says but i think it means read-only memory, and my tablet has no recovery mode it only shows "downloading mode"
I don't know if this is a permanent solution but I noticed that I had no "OBB" file in "Android " on my "extsdcard". I created said file and moved all files from "OBB", "sdcard0" to new OBB file. I then started a program who's file I moved to new OBB and immediately closed. Then went back to original OBB to delete newly created file (double) for that app. Now all my apps download straight to extsdcard in the new OBB file. I can also move apps to SD card from app manager .
Let me know if it worked for you.

Hey guys,
[e] Do i have to 'install' the new storage layout?
I'm sure everyone knows that problem, that the internal memory is getting filled by 'other storage'. My HOX shows me that my internal memory (app memory? have german version here) is using 4,75GB 'Other' memory out of the 6,76GB memory. Sure there I have left ~25GB of 'Phone storage' or how it's called in english.
I want back some free space out of that 'other storage' which takes 4,75GB because as soon as it reaches that 6,76GB I cannot install apps anymore. I'm sure you know what my problem is? I took a lot of time now to search for solutions an did a complete root and have installed CWM, ViperX and did factory resets / wipe data, everything.
Is there no way to get back that memory space? File explorer apps only show me that I have free 1,9GB/2GB of max internal memory but It should be 1,9GB/6,76GB?
Thanks for your help.

I recommend go for the new layout
Thanks for the reply, I already changed to the new layout and flashed XenonHD onto the phone. Still some problems there but at least the memory problems are solved.
