I am curious how is everyone managing their contacts?
Are you using Outlook?
Are you using Dashwire?
Are you using SIM Manager?
Are you using Photo Contacts Pro?
I am curious as I would love to import say friends info via facebook or any type of friendly software that can grab pics and any other info I have already obtained?
Any advice feedback or preference just comment and tell what's worked for you?
im too lazy too...i got some in dashwire, some in outlook...some written on my hand.
I just settle with outlook, I use it for all my calendar stuff too for both work and play and it does the job. Tried Dashwire but just wasn't feeling it...took longer to sync than hooking up to my computer. I use Google Cal Sync and Ogg sync to keep all in line OTA on the calendar front.
I'm still searching for a program that can sync my outlook cal/contacts with my dash OTA all in one.
I quit using outlook a year or so ago. Right now I am just using Hotmail / Live. With the Dash you can sync Hotmail and phone. So no need to use Outlook. All contacts are online.

Yes Outlook seems the best option. I also like Dashwire too, it is an amazing little program/webpage whatever you want to call it...

Im have trouble with my Picture Caller Id Screen. and Im using WM 6.1 and it comes up distorted... What would I be doing to change that?
dashwire ?
after reading their website that does sound pretty cool , but a question for anyone that is using it just to make sure before i sign up for their service .
it says you control what gets synced , and when .
just how much control does the user have over the process : can it be set to only update using wifi when i tell it to ? (since my service provider has no unlimited data plan available )
i use the free service by Nuevasync (www.nuevasync.com)
It is a two-way OTA sync with Google calendar and Google contacts using OTA Activesync.
Works flawlessly for me with 500+ contacts. I think it only works with one Google calendar right now and there are some restrictions with repeating appointments etc.
(Google contacts sucks but at least I am free of Outlook...)
I use outlook. I have around 2000 or so contacts (business) and I have had only some minor issues.
me too, using outlook, some duplicate contacts (1000 work contacts) but for the rest all ok
Hey guys,
My MD now has a Desire and I notice something strange happening when he syncs his outlook contacts.
Now I know from both sides (outlook, Android) , it doesn't really matter what you file someone's name as because when you search, it still appears either way. However, he is very particular so here is my problem.
When he syncs his outlook contacts to the device, on outlook they now appear as first name, last name. Even though they are set to File As Lastname, Firstname. Now if I open a contact in Outlook, flip the File As back from and to what it was, it then appears in outlook correctly (well how he wants it to).
However, next sync it will re appear as first, last... although file as is still last, first (Outlook)
Anyone have any ideas or noticed something similar?
I appreciate this is a minor issue but I would like to resolve it for him if possible.
Thanks for reading and any help appreciated.
Tell your MD to stop being so picky!!! LOL!!!
Seriously, though, I don't know - I stopped using Outlook sync and sync to my Gmail account now

i had this issue as well, it took days to sort out and once I had them all as I needed it I just installed gsyncit and uninstalled HTC Sync. Outlook and phone perfectly in sync wirelessly for £9 !
i'm thinking about getting a desire, currently have htc touch 3g wm and have it sync'd to my company exchange server . whats the best way to recreate the same push email & sync functionality on the desire? Would Gsyncit do the job? thanks in advance

no need, it will sync to exchange without anything other than your exchange details. No other software needed

This is what I used:
xxx.slipstick.com/contacts/fileas.asp (change xxx to www)
and it worked perfectly.
I found after I got fed up of change 500 contacts individually (twice)
Thanks for that Redskinblack, looks like it'll be a great work around for us. Anyone have any info as to weather or not HTC are ever likely to fix this though?
outlook sync with htc sync then tried to sync back after wiping the contacts on my phone sent all my contacts screwy, added them to wrong groups, linked them to wrong facebook contacts...
I've found exporting to sd and importing again much easier and works much nicer - lose my groups but that's not as annoying as re-linking them all...
obviously doesnt help the outlook issue though
If it helps, I've been trying to find a reliable method to sync Outlook 2010 contacts with the Desire. I had similar issues with HTC Sync reversing first and last names as well as problems syncing.
Having looked at Gsyncit but not wanting to pay for it, I found MyPhoneExplorer which was originally developed for SE phones but has been updated to include Android. It works well and syncs over wifi. You install the program on your PC and the app from the Market. In the program, you then select Outlook as the source of your contacts.
In order to avoid duplicated contacts, I deleted all phone contacts prior to syncing and it copied all the Outlook contacts to my Desire. The only issue was that the Facebook contact link to the phone contacts was broken. This was resolved by removing the account from HTC Facebook for Sense, logging in again and linking a contact.
Hope this helps someone.

This is a great explanation. Very useful. Thanks.
i had the same problem with windows mobile phones trying to sync to my computer. here is the solution : when to write a new contact in outlook say his name is ( Dave Smith ) open up contact field in outlook express and now point to new contact .where it says FULL Name ,click on this icon usually you would put the first name ,in this instance (Dave) in the box where it says First and (Smith) in the box where it says Last .Don't do that .where is says First just put the whole name in there i.e Dave Smith . save all info ,when you have synced your phone ,it will say Dave Smith in your phone.
hope this helps and you understand.
The free sync tool MyPhoneExplorer works fine for me and you can set the first, last option as well.
Hi, I hope you guys can help me out.
I got a new Desire and have set it up to sync from Outlook through HTC Sync. It do sync my appointments, but it don't update they.
Say if I move a meeting to another day or delete it completly. Even though it says is had done a sync, the meeting is still on the original date, and that is getting a bet anoying.
What can I do to solve this problem?
HTC sync is a dog
Maybe it's a dog, but that don't get me anyway, will it?
At least come with a solution to the problem, another app perhaps?
All it should be able to do, is syncing the calendar, contacts and tasks through a cabel.
Why do you need a cable ? Doesn't it sync all of that to the gmail account the phone's on ?
As I see it there is 3 ways to syncronize both the phone and Outlook.
* Cable
* Bluetooth
* By the normal phonesignal (eg. Exchange Activesync)
Exchange Activesync I don't need on a daily basis, cause I will get all from Outlook then (both appointments, contacts, tasks and mails), and it will use data transfer on my subscription to fast, as I haven't got a lot. Besides I think it uses to much batt.
Bluetooth uses to much battery also, but I can deal with that, if I could just find an app, that is free and can sync. both ways properly.
So now I'll settled with the cable, the upside is that it is getting charged at the same time.
The gmail solution is af no go. It is company policy not to use gmail, when we don't know what they may will do with the data transfered. Cause in my mind, they will log the data.
So I after an app that can sync properly, if not I can get HTC Sync to do it.
Does that clear things up a little?

Are you sure that contacts in outlook 2007 are sync-ing properly with your android phone using HTC Sync?
In my case the phone numbers stored in fields like "Car", "Radio", "Assistant" etc are not going to my android device.
I am using the latest HTC Sync v3.1.55.
Anybody with such issues?

I wouldn't know. Normally I just use the more regually fields like, mobil and direct, so haven't looked at that. But I do have trouble with names on contacts, as some gets there middlename removed, but I haven't found "the smoking gun" to solved this problem, either.
Basically I think HTC is cra..... in it's one food. Is there one thing HTC was known for in the past, was it made very good phones for the business consumer. Now they can't even make a decent syncing tool, for the business market.
HTC wake up and get in the match!!!
Don't use Outlook, use Google's products. Cloud computing FTW!
Take a look at MyPhoneExplorer as an alternative (free) to HTC Sync.
I advise to stop using htc sync.
Had troubles with is as well.
Some appointments had 5 identical entries.
Switched to google calendar instead, took me the sweet time to clear up the calendar though . . . . .

I can't use Google's Cloud products. Company policy, and there is still many issues with legal country policies maybe not being upholded. As long as it is not certain that using the Cloud doesn't do anything not legal, we can't use it.

Can MyPhoneExplorer sync both appointments, contacts and tasks through USB, and do it way better than HTC Sync?
I guess it can. Just tried it, and think we are getting here, but do have some questions, maybe you guys can answer.
Is there an easy way to clean out my appointments, as I now got 2 of all, since I did a sync with MyPhoneExplorer?
The settings under HTC Sync, which should I set them to now? It is set to HTC Sync, but can I change it to eg. charging and still get to functionallity in MyPhoneExplore?
Should I clean up my contacts, and how do I do this easiest?
I can't seem to sync notes as it is disabled in MyPhoneExplorer. Why is that?
If I want to make an appointment on my phone, I can only chose PC Sync, and that is not getting sync to Outlook through MyPhoneExplorer. How should I make appointments on my phone? Is there an app, that make it possibly to make appointments similar to Outlook (appointment/meeting, private/public...)?
And last, I think, MyPhoneExplorer can't seem to sync tasks. Do you know any good app to do that?

Just solved 3 of the above questions.
[1]Is there an easy way to clean out my appointments, as I now got 2 of all, since I did a sync with MyPhoneExplorer?
I found an remove all button.
[2]The settings under HTC Sync, which should I set them to now? It is set to HTC Sync, but can I change it to eg. charging and still get to functionallity in MyPhoneExplore?
I have changed it to just charge, and it seems to work.
[3]Should I clean up my contacts, and how do I do this easiest?
I also here found a remove all buttton, and then did another sync.
So we are down to these questions
I can't seem to sync notes as it is disabled in MyPhoneExplorer. Why is that?
If I want to make an appointment on my phone, I can only chose PC Sync, and that is not getting sync to Outlook through MyPhoneExplorer. How should I make appointments on my phone? Myphoneexplorer is equally BAD. (Rather I would rate it worse than HTC Sync).
The fields like "car", "Radio", "Pager", "Asistant" are still not Sync-ed.
Ok... Its finally time I use this phone to sync with outlook 2007 that I have on my computer..
I don't care much about contacts.. What I need it for is reminders..
Throughout my day I have about 10-20 reminders.. I really want to have this sync with my phone..
I honestly don't even know where to start but assume this should be a VERY simple task?
THANKS
EDIT** If it helps I have "Pure Widget Calender Widget"
I just have it up, but it doesn't do anything besides show me a calendar as of now.. LOL
I have my outlook 2007 calendar synced and it works great. There is a desktop client that you need to install called Google Calendar Sync (google it) and that will keep your outlook calendar synced with your gmail one. Once you get the two synced up, set up your calendar widget to display your gmail calendar and you should be good to go. You can add an event in outlook, gmail, or directly on your phone and it will be populated across all three automatically.

Ok my one question is this.. Say I set all my reminders through my computer outlook.. I shut down and leave the office.. Now I'm screwed right?
I should sync before I shut down my computer? I don't want my phone to sync every hour because it would kill battery I assume..
Or how does it work?
I'm not entirely sure what the frequency that the client syncs with outlook is, but you can do it manually. Add your reminders, hit sync, then shut your laptop down. That client only syncs your outlook with your gmail so it's sync frequency will have no effect on your battery life. As long as you have your gmail account sent to sync on your phone, the new reminders should get pushed the same way contacts do. I really don't think that has a significant effect on your battery life either. Of course you can turn off all auto syncing and do it all manually but that would probably get annoying really quick.
Why mess with Google calendar sync at all? Why not just set up ActiveSync? I have mine set up to always sync, with no off peak time. Works fine, computer doesn't need to be on, and doesn't affect the battery at all.

I've never even messed with active sync at all. I always thought you needed to connect your EVO to your computer to sync with it. How does it get the data from your outlook into your EVO?

I am with you.. I also don't know how it gets the data..
I do like your way though..
I don't mind.. Everyday before I leave I just hit the sync button.. Even if I forget its not that big of a deal as the reminders are usually a few days out..
Still.. If active sync is better some how, I too want to know more about this..
THANKS

You're looking at it wrong - your not sending data from outlook to your phone. When someone sends you an email or a meetingmaker or something like that, it doesn't go right to "outlook" - it goes to your exchange server which then sends the data elsewhere for you to access (like outlook). I don't know about you, but I can also access all of my corporate email through a web client also, outside of outlook - this works similarly. What activesync does is tells the exchange server to not only send your data to outlook, but also send it to the activesync account on your phone. Again, even though this is all in real time, this uses no battery (because of how it's set up, it's not continuously polling for new data) - and sometimes I even get my email on my phone before it appears in outlook. I have it synced with my exchange calandar and email 24/7, and have never had any battery issues with it - not even negligable battery usage.

settings -> accounts & sync -> add account -> exchange Activesync
during the setup process (which is painless, but you may need to get some info from your IT group like server info) you'll choose what you want to sync to your phone. The options it gives you are email, contacts, and calandar. If you just want calandar, make sure that box is checked, and the other ones aren't.
actually, you may need to set it up first, then go back into
settings -> accounts & sync -> exchange Activesync to uncheck email and contacts, if you don't want it to sync everything. hope that helps

That I can't help you with. It's supposed to be the same, but that's not always the case. On my end, I had to get server and domain info that I'd never heard of before. Try to get your hands on some "setting up ActiveSync" documentation from your company, it shouldn't be too hard to find, and will have all the details you need to enter.

check the settings on the hosting end. you may have to give them a call to find out the information you need. i had to use the webmail login information to get it to work.
i use ExchangeActiveSync extensively. i get all my work emails as they arrive on the server and its pretty neat that it syncs my calendar as well. I have the HTC Agenda widget on one of the 7 screens, it pulls in my outlook calendar, google calendar and my facebook events. its pretty awesome!!!
I'm with start logic for my hosting company...i guess I'll give them a call unless someone here knows the information? Thanks

How are you guys using ActiveSync with your Evo? Is this Microsoft's ActiveSync or something else? I used it for years with my Windows Mobile phones and would kill for the same functionality with Android.
Fellas, just talk to your IT departments for the following basic info:
Domain name
Server name
You should obviously have your username and password already. ActiveSync is both a desktop application for old WinMo phones and a feature of Exchange. iPhones, Android phones, and a few others can sync with an Exchange mailbox by talking nice to ActiveSync running on your mail server.
HOWEVER, some Exchange admins retain tight control over what types of devices can sync with your mailbox, and some even require you to request sync to begin with. Mobile sync is turned off by default and must be enabled on your mailbox.
Buy your network admin a drink, he'll hook you up. I would ;-)
The way my phone is currently set up is through my WLID and through an exchange connection. All of my contacts are pulled in through my exchange connection and that is how I view them on the phone. However, for future back up purposes, is there anyway to force them to synchronize through my WL connection as well? They don't seem to be getting saved on the WL server, I'm assuming to avoid redundant situations...
Bump, anybody have any ideas with this?

I don't know the answer, but don't you have good backup through your exchange account?
It does seem like this is nothing to do with the phone: you just want to sync your exchange account, or some parts of it, with a windows live account.
My guess is you'd probably need specialized software for this, or some way to program Outlook to do this.
Definitely not worth it, anyway, if what you want is backup.
Well, no, I just also want my contacts synced through my WL account, so if I write an email from WLMail the contacts are there, which they aren't... And for the day I'm finished with school and no longer have that exchange.
