XDA Developers kicks ASS!! - About xda-developers.com

Why?
Since joining this forum I:
1. Learned about cooking and roms.
2. Learned to Flash my mda2 with other windows versions.
3. Installed Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition!
4. Got those widcomm bluetooth drivers up and running.
Don't know what i can do back, perhaps a donation would be in order.
Thank you all very much, for you're help and time.
Yours Sincerely,
Braindump

I agree, well done.

.Net CF and SDE

Has anyone ever successfully installed a .NetCF on an XDA?
Am i so stupid and the XDA is one of the new .Net-build-in PPC's?
also i tryed for a whole day to connect to my XDA with my VS.Net2003 via activesync, as you may have guessed without any luck.
I dont want to use eVC, when the next generation of Languages(C#) and IDE's is already at hand
OK,
i spend the last 3 days looking for a solution and i think i finally found the reason. As far as i understand Microsoft, the Phone edition of PocketPC 2002 does not support the .NetCF. :x
But, n developer conference 2002 in London i know that i was in a "hands-on-lab", where i had a first look at the .NetCF - with a Phone-PPC (prototype by Compaq, if i remember correctly)
P.S.: Could please anybody say something about that, even if it is: "Yes, Ur right - no .Net for XDA" or (better) "You are just to stupid to install.."
thanks
Now i'm even more confused:
I took a look at my PPC-Version string and it say's:
3.0.11171 Build 11178
witch means, that it's no Phone-Edition (has Version number 3.0),
that means it should be compatible to install .NetCF.
Yet i was not able to install and im getting a little angry (but cannot decide if i should be angry over me or O2 or Microsoft).
I really was looking forward to an opportunity to use C# in a real application and not just that sample-code-then-garbage projects.

Shouldn't be a problem to use .Net CF on the XDA. A friend of mine has been doing it for months. Seems like you have a really old ROM though, ever thought about upgrading?
thanks for the reply.
My rom version is 3.14.16 GER, this should be the latest (German) Version.
I did it! Huhu, yeah!
For everyone else having problems:
with Visual Studio.Net 2003(BETA) installed,
take these files:
C:\Programm Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\CompactFrameworkSDK\v1.0.5000\Windows CE\arm\*.CAB
and copy them to the Temp directory on your device, then simply execute them.
It's as easy as this and i can't imagine, why i had problems in the first place
That's odd - the VS.Net 2003 beta just downloaded the .NetCF CAB direct my XDA the first time I hit deploy with the Pocket PC selected instead of the emulator - no problem, no fuss.
However, note this: I just tried downloading the official .NetCF deployable runtime from the MS site and when I run it, it says that my device (the XDA) isn't supported.
However, I see you've already found the solution - just copy the ARM CAB to the XDA and execute it - it installs in seconds with not so much as a single question.
Good luck with the CF - we've been using it for months and it's brilliant!
MikeS.
Thank you - and you're right: it is great!
I work with it for about 2 weeks now and have already achieved more with it, than i would have with eVC in 1 month. Also is C# a really cool language. It's fun to use it.
However, that VS2003Beta didn't deploy the CF to my XDA automatically is because i (still) can't get the connection over ActiveSync work. That also means, that i can debug only with the emulator - without a radio.
Until now it was no real problem, i just started with the non-phone-part of my App. Right now i started the development of the Phone-part and i have to guess some functionality or just use so many try catch-blocks that it slows my development a bit down.
Any suggestions what i could do to get the connection running?

WM2005 sucks?

Looks like wm2005 still not very stable, a lot of programs still not working.
For example, Xbackup, set as ringtone or Monster Chinese, etc.
well alot of programs required new versions when 2003SE came out as well

Using it on my Imate for a month or more and no problem so far and no lock-ups like there were on WM2003SE
I think the title of this thread is misleading... :?
The fact that it does not run several applications or crashes is because:
1.- This version is not final
2.- It's not compatible because of it's very nature, IT'S A NEW OS!!!
The same happened when we upgraded our PCs to Windows XP don't you remember?
New versions will start to come up eventually, and even if you don't see any advances "right-out-of-the-box" it's because the main improvements on this OS reside behind the scenes, so Programmers will start to develop new and exciting apps that take advantage of the new features and APIs.
For me Windows Mobile 5.0 has been very stable even with the very first version that Buzz, Toe and the gang which had very limited memory resources I had no stability problems whatsoever.
There are limitations of course, (like no MMS, mediocre video camera, sms problems, etc) but eventually Microsoft OR our very own developers will take care of that!
So, BE PATIENT!!!!!
Hi,
Using it for 3 days in my Qtek 2020 and no problem at all.
Even Jabra250 works fine, when in 2003SE was difficult to setup.
About software that don't work, we must wait until new versions come out...
I'm sure when you update you computer from NT to W2K you has software that didn't work and had to buy new versions, so why should be different here?
Be patient.... Mobile5 is ok for now.

i double that
Rayan & all the rest are right!!!
I can't agree less to what Rayan wrote.
It's a new OS and a beta for that matter (check out Goras thread on "WM2005 that I can share"), If I'm not mistaken it's not also intended for Himalaya, judging on the memory problems just solved(!) by Buzz, toenailed, XdaJojo, mamaich & all the other contributors as well.
Personally in my opinion its a lot 'solid' than the WM2003 & SE since it has to crash yet on my xda II, as mentioned by Rayan even the initial release of the OS with limited memory was stable.
The problems with the apps like backup & camera are being solved one-by-one, MMS which doesn't even start before is now working (check out the threads on WM2005 in the forum).
Even now, the benefits of using the OS in terms of performance, stability & looks far outweighs its limitations (in my humble opinion) just be patient & leave it to the WIZARDS (Buzz, toenailed, XdaJojo, etc. etc. etc).
Besides, hey ttseng this is the xda-developers forum & we all are having fun testing, tweaking, & breathing new life to our "soon to be outlawed" XDA II ....... if not for the WIZARDS in the forum !!!!! Notice the request for the OS on the other xda models, aren't we lucky we have the WiZARDS working on the HIMA?
Cheers!
works flawlessly on XDA2 Himalaya!!!!!!!!
best os and most stable one ive come across ,wm200se never really happy but this WM2005 is and has been stable without a single hard reset or rest since install.even self configured the o2email and hotmail!! took the o2 uk config & connections setup file from a XDA2s_1-12-178-WWE_UK_Extended_ Rom.
Is there more than one version of WM2005 kicking about?
I successfully installed WM2005 on my XDA II, but I couldn't get many 3rd party apps to install on it. So I was surprised to see screenshots with certain utilities running ok.
I was wondering if there is more than one version of it floating about on the net. The one I installed was found on these forums, but I have recently downloaded another off usenet.
They are both himalaya.
I am sure a non-beta copy will rear its head on here sooner rather than later (I hope!)
Cam
this version is in the ftp section ,the rom has a file name of
wm2k5_XDA2_HIMALAYA_O2_fullRAM.rar
Yep!
That's the one!
That would make both copies I have the same.
Is this a late BETA or even an RTM version?
Now that the OS has been officially released I am guessing it's a race for someone to post the released version ;-)
the official full version is released?
wow!
so when can we have it for download here?
i am planning to put off my upgrade till the full version comes out.
currently i am on the win2003se which i aint very happy with!
plz advise...
thanx everybody.
It out but you cant get it.
I have a friend who is a manger in Microsoft. I sent the MS link of the offical release and asked if it can be obtained from the internal web software store. At the moment it cant and I feel it will also never be the case (2003 the end user could never buy).
So we are back to the carriers and if they will ship 2005 as an upgrade for ood devices or only on new (MDA XDA IV).
Dont think one needs to be a rocket scintist to answer that, was not one of the devices never shipped with 2003, the way I remember it it was buz that did a Chines to English translation.
So at least w on the BA side have to wait untill something gets leaked.
A little help with WM2005 upgrade please!!!!!!!
I see that most people have upgraded to WM2005 without much trouble, but not me!! I am with o2 and I've just upgraded and I can't us GPRS (it keeps trying to dial 193.113.200.195 and then drops the conx even though the IP is entered in the APN section) I can't run Worldmate pro (not compatable), TOMTOM 3 (need to upgrade to ver 4.4) pick up email etc etc.
Could I have the details that you need to enter into your XDA to connect to o2 network via GPRS so that I can access hotmail, messenger, MMS, Internet etc etc
I hope you can help as I don't want to downgrade to the old windows version.
i can send u a O2 customisation cab file if u need ,however your phone must b on contract with O2UK not payg or orange etc..
Yes Please!!
That'll be great. yes I am with O2 contract.......
where is the awesome rom !!! please
iam running w2005 in my XD2..but still MANY applications cant be installed..and i was surprised to see the screenshot (above) with many applications runing ..BUT i couldnt find the ROM...i found only the one for XDA2s..."XDA2s_1-12-178-WWE_UK_Extended_ Rom" actually is a zipped file with no rom inside..just many cab files ..can anyone help me please...thanks guys

Windows live for Artemis/Orbit

Firstly, just want to say thank you to everyone on the forums for all the work they have put in. Made two attempts to upgrade, resulting in one bricked XDA Orbit, and one brand spanking new Orbit running b&b 3.7 If it wasn't for the hard work of the forum members, i'm sure it would have been two bricked paperweights!!
Secondly, is a question/request, for the Windows Live WM6 software. Micro$oft has stated that this software is being released only as a component of new WM6 devices. Has anyone seen it on a device, or does anyone have a CAB file for the software, as i'm looking to implement the push-mail service for a hotmail account.
Hope someone can help, and many thanks once again.
Regards
Its already installed on the b&b 3.7 rom. Hows that for easy install?? LOL

Using an XDA IIs just as a wi-fi pda?

Hi,
I have an old XDA IIs that I don't use as my phone anymore. I just want to use it in the house on the wi-fi for net, skype and pda stuff.
What I'm wondering is, if I don't have to worry about the carrier (O2) because I'm not using it as a phone, then can I hack it a bit and improve the OS or is there something that you would recommend I do with it to maximize it's potential for non-phone use?
I guess if there is, then I have a few questions!
1. Would an alternative OS "find" all the features of the hardware? ie. camera/record/contacts/calendar etc. buttons and the keyboard?
2. Would it be worthwhile to install WM6? Would it be able to handle it? Is it possible?
I guess I'd just like to get the most out of it as it's a great device that could be put to good use instead of gathering dust in a drawer.
Many thanks for any replies in advance.
Cheers,
Rob.
1. only roms custom made for a pda will work unlike pc windows which include many many many various drivers then windows mobile only! have the drivers it needs and requires to work and or boot at all
2. yes http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=386
Hi again,
I've tried installing Windows Mobile 6 but I get this:
ERROR 100: MODEL ID ERROR
The ROM image that you are trying to use is not designed to work on your device. Please check the vendor website and download the correct ROM update.
Is there a way around this? Anyone experience this?
The XDA IIs is currently running: Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition Version 4.21.1088 (Build 15045.2.6.0)
Processor: Intel(r) PXA263
Memory: 125.77 MB
Should I just keep it at that, can I expect any better from an alternative/updated OS?
Thanks again,
Rob.
module id errror is typicaly if one try to install wm6 from another device then the one you own
"Should I just keep it at that, can I expect any better from an alternative/updated OS?"
there are only such a thing called alternative blue angel (the htc name of xdaIIs) os's no other will work
not sure what you mean by better i sugest you read the XDA-wiki and the blue angel wm6 forums for what people exp with these later roms
in terms of issues of incompatiblity and stablity
asking in those blue angel forums will also be a surden way of getting people who own the same device as you do to reply
Thanks for that Rudegar, I'll check it out!
Rob.

help... java on ppc

Hello
I'm looking for a way to install java runtime on pocket pc (windows mobile 6.1 on hp ipaq hx2495). I've been looking all over the internet for a specific download, but I'm not very experienced when it comes to java, and I don't know what to download. To be more specific, I'm trying to run this java program called DGuitar (http://dguitar.sourceforge.net/en/index.html). Thanks for the help!
Woot! Something I can answer...
There are a few answers though;
First you can use IBM's J9 which works just fine on the WM standard versions (no phone).
I find that Jbed is a much superior JRE for the Pocket PC but there are a few files you need. There was a post awhile back here on the boards so credit goes to who ever figured this out (a freaking genius!)
You need to have two dll's in your windows directory. They are SMS.dll and Phone.dll. You simply need to unzip these files, copy them to your pocket pc's windows directory and restart your PDA. Once you do this you can install many of the HTC apps like HTC home, HTC today etc and Jbed.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Thanks very much I'll try it.
That´s perfect! Thank you very much.
Now it works on hx4700 with WM6.1.
Glad to hear it!

1. welcome to xda-devs
2. read my MIDlet Bible in the General forum (and, as a rule of thumb, make sure you always read my new - and past - articles & Bibles).
Thank you very much. It work for my HP4700+wm6.1
