Soon to be new XDAIIs owner - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Have placed my order with O2 yesterday. £179.00 and 16.50 per month 12 months. I'm sure I'm doing the right thing. Can anyone guide me in the right direction to a BT TomTom package that has all the right leads and mounts for the car. Going around in circles so many web sites. Great work people for such an informative website. Has proved valuable in making my decision to purchase.

Personally I would wait until they fix the bugs!! I have now found well over 50, many serious. Soft resets are at best a daily occurance since the PPC OS seems to have been written in such a way that one badly behaved app can take out the whole OS. Its like working with windows 3.1 again! Windows Mobile does not multitask properly - looks like some kind of windows 3.1ish co-operative multitasking. My Psion 5 with its 32MHz processor used to multitask better.
Everything works _sometimes_ and it usually stops working just when you need it to work most. Depends how much of the devices functionality you expect to be able to use.
It has the potential to be a top device if only the software was not so [email protected] They have a monopoly though cause there aint ought else like it on the market.
HTC should be ashamed of themselves...
Nigel

XDA Price
Hello again
Where did you find the XDA for that price, the main o2 website has it at 249.99 with min monthly payment at 19.00 ??
http://shop.o2.co.uk/shop/handset/O2/XDAIIs
Nigel

Where I'm getting it.
O2 online. www.o2.co.uk/business/great deals then xda2s 179.00 + vat

Hmm, I should have hunted around a bit more before buying. V strange that the phone is cheaper when you get a business tarriff:
Including the VAT the XDAIIs works out to £211.49 on their business tarrif vs £249.99 on the personal tarriff with line rental: £19.39 vs £19 on personal tarriff.
Dont suppose I can cancel mine now, and get a business tarriff instead! You probably need a company registration no or VAT no. Wish I was still contracting !!
Nigel

I got mine for 150 by ringin up o2 and asking for discount!
It should arrive tomorrow
While im here which memory card should I get i.e. size and brand ???
Thanks

Refund
Veletron,
Of course you can get a refund - O2 will roll back any contract within 14 days - you return the hardware and just pay for calls plus the proportion of the monthly charge.
I know this because I bought a new XDA2 a few days after losing my old uninsured XDA2, then the next day it turned up in France.... long story. I called the O2 shop who were happy to refund me - it was pretty impressive service.
Online sales are the same - you have distance selling regulations giving you the same deal, only it's part of the law, rather than good customer service.
This obviously applies in the UK only - all you johnny foreigners can just drool in envy
Peter

Business Credit Check
Hi,
Just wondering, when ordering of o2's business site, wether the same credit checks are carried out before they accept you as a customer.
I don't have a business could I do it ?
Thx

@Veletron
Don't suppose, given your disappointment with the xda2s, you would be willing to swap for an ipaq 4150 complete with detatchable thumb keyboard/case and screen protector and a Sony Ericcson P910i?
Based in Glasgow. You can't blame a guy for trying!

Hi
Nope, I shall be sticking. Despite its faults, the hardware is nice, and I still hold out hope that MS/HTC/O2 will get some of the (many) issues sorted given time.
Nigel

Fair enough! Looks like I'm off to ebay then!
Adrian

We are still missing his original question...
We still have not answered crisr2000 original question:
"Can anyone guide me in the right direction to a BT TomTom package that has all the right leads and mounts for the car."
To which I'm interested as well.

I answer to the original question I had the same dilama and contacted
various people within O2 to find out and in the end took the risk.
Basically the XDAIIs has the same connector as the XDAII so any tomtom
kit made for that will work.
I went for a third party all in one powered mount with GPS with a XDAII
lead and got the software seperatly and it works fine.

XDA IIs Warranty repair via HTC... Possible???

I've been looking at the following site, from searching around on this forum...
http://www.htceurope.com/Wizard.aspx
Filled in all the details, IMEI, Serial Number, etc... and its coming up registered as a 9090, when I try select MDAIII or MV2000, it Always defaults back to 9090...
SO... this is what puzzles me... surely if HTC dont do O2 repairs, why would they have the mobile on the 'warranty' list, as I tried my old Smartphone on there (which is way out of warranty) and it says there is no valid warranty for this phone!
Basically, the TFT is cracked to hell, BUT i can still use the phone using MobiControl software, and it makes/recieves calls just fine!
Would it be worth filling in the Warranty form, or just giving HTC a call on Monday (tomorrow)???
I got the phone for free of my brother who works in a phone store, with a smashed screen, was originally a demo phone, so only has 15 hours outgoing calls logged only & no incoming, in A1 condition, no scratches, all accessories, MINT!
If HTC decide not to repair it, or they do at a charge, how much would it be for...
HTC to carry out the repair if they add a surcharge (as stated on there site)
Other individual to eith ersupply a screen for me to fit, or fix it for me??
Cheers
Paul
I sent off my phone to HTC (uk) cause some friend sat on my mdaIII and cracked the screen (just the touchscreen.. not the LCD).
This happened 1 month after i got my phone.. (just my luck i guess).. Anyway they said screens aint in warranty, and they charged £90 (GPB) plus VAT (£105.75). I had 2 options.. pay it.. or pay 15 pounds to return.. so i took option 1..
Note tho.. it took em ages! i called 1000 times for status.. and they were saying waiting for parts and stuff... BULL****.. in the end and 3 months of waiting.. they said they had to replace the motherboard cause the screen wasnt compatible.. what a load of bull**** lol.. they gave me another phone.. different serial, IMEI and everything.. but 3 months of waiting was HELL..
hmmmm well if thats what there like, I doubt I will get them to sort it then...
Rang HTC before, but is just an answerphone service, pointless & crap!
Had a quote for £165 inc. labour & such so far from Apex Laptops, so gona shop around & see if I can get it cheaper! But a little birdy told me... that the XDA IIs screens are very hard to come by, as seems to be a common fault them going?? dont know much about it tbh!
Cheers

HTC won't touch o2 stuff from experience despite the commonality between models / parts accross the brands - I tried to get a screen done in an XDA exec and they wouldn't as they claimed they coudln't guarentee to have the screen that matched my board (see previous poster )so I think they stick to the brands they have a repair contract with, even though I could quote the part number needed!
o2's own XDA helpline quoted £165 for the exec, HTC had quoted £115 for the 'm5000' so were cheaper :-(
I ended up getting one direct from Taipei for about £100 and fitting it myself.
If you source the b.a part yourself make sure you check the part number ( sony or toppoly) before ordering from anywhere, most places have a 'no returns' policy.
Richard
I had a little accident with mine on Sunday. It fell out of my pocket and down 4 or 5 stairs in a carpark. The side cracked off on one of the sliders, so its come off its runners and the screen and unit are two separate pieces! However oddly enough the screen isn't cracked at all!
I'd sell it, but insurance is providing a new one tomorrow and I need to give this one back.

Anyone have experience with www.selectgsm.com?

Hi,
being a tight a** I ordered mine from www.selectgsm.com but alas a couple of days later it still hasn't shipped.
I guess I'm looking for a bit of reassuarance. Have any one else on here ever ordered from those guys??
Maybe I'm impatient but I want the Rhodium now! Since work gave me a device to replace my Uni I've been longing for a high res, large screen! (With a keyboard!)
I don't wanna scare u or something, but most of the sites that don't have active links (ones u can click on the images) on the bottom of the page to VISA, MasterCard etc. are fake.. I'm not saying this one is, but there is some possibility, so keep this in mind! Also try google-ing the site to see if there are some opinions about it... My advice - if u haven't transferred any money, don't and order the device from some other site with good reputation...
OK, seems like this one is real U can check out some opinions here:
http://www.redflagdeals.com/deals/main.php/ratings/vendor_info/SelectGSM.com
hmm, i was thinking of this company, but i think i will still go with a clove or the likes...while paying more..and much more at that, i will stick with the "if it seems to good to be true, it usually is"
redflag really reiterates this with a bad experience and wrong country devices...
I got the device, a couple of days ago, they just had to verify my details by phone. They even included a power plug adaptor for me. Happy with this company now... Their phone manner was excellent when I called.
HTC Touch Pro2, Canada
They do have reputation online just got to dig, http://www.google.com/products/reviews?fq=VERTU+ASCENT+PHONE&cid=e3ddd3f5716d9d52&sort=2 I purchase HTC Touch Pro2 from http://www.selectgsm.com/ it arrived on friday, Just as described very happy with the phone.. would shop there again thanks.

Any Images of the VF branded TP2 please...

Hi Folks,
Just wanted to check what this thing looked like as I cannot get to see one, especially the keyboard. All the marketing pictures on VF's site seem to be the original HTC ones.
Also interested to hear how folks have got on with any unbranding efforts now that we are quite a few weeks into availability. I think there are some beta CABS around...
Thanks,
Sam
Look on the vodafone business site at the picture of the Diamond. The TF looks the same as that. Horrible!
It is simple to remove using one cab file that will put the phone to a plain black. You can then use any other theme you like, or part of a theme
Stunno,
Thanks for this. Yes, had a look.... hmm. But as you say it takes just one cab file.
Has the keyboard been "painted" red in anyway or lit up in red or is it the original? Hopefully the external branding is just the front and back logo.
Otherwise are you happy with VF? About to take the plunge from another operator.
Thanks,
Sam
Double post due to system hanging....
Sam, no the keyboard appears to be standard, grey keys with black lettering until it lights up and the lettering glows white and green for the FN button. The only visible VF stuff is indeed on the front and back but is very discreet
Vodafone has been very good. I have been with Tmobile for about 6 years and the signal strength/reception is much better with VF, apart from the odd blank spot, Tmobile reception in rural areas was shocking. Having said that I haven't seen an 'H' yet with VF.
I've uploaded the VF manual for you if you want to take a look its about 14MB. It has several depictions of the branding, but as i say it only takes one cab installation of about 10 minutes to clear it
http://rapidshare.com/files/250000341/HTC_Touch_Pro2_Vodafone_UK_English_User_Manual_v1.pdf
Stunno,
You are a star...... Thanks...
Sam
Stunno,
Just scanned the manual... Very useful insight... and reassuring to be honest althought the theme is a little "blood red".
One final thing.... Have VF removed any apps off the original ie YouTube App etc... No doubt any VOIP functionality might have been nobbled as well ???
Another point that you might have thought about is the upgrade policy of VF for things such as firmware and WM6.5. Apparently they are slow. Do you have thoughts on this?
Just trying to decide between 18 and 24 months contracts now !!!
Sam
That's a good question!
I have no Youtube app on mine, but, then again, I had Facebook integration until I changed themes and now I haven't.
I have read elsewhere that the youtube app had been removed, which is no bad thing as the 'allowance' is only 500MB.
There is also no sign of VOIP although I don't know if it is nobbled or not as I don't use that either. I rarely make international calls and my unlimited landline calls makes up for it
Stunno,
Yes the unlimited calls is very attractive to me as well. I guess it will be a good "hand free" tool as when when talking through stuff on the PC or whatever. I tended to us this a bit with my standard business landline which is now costing me too much, so turning my TP2 over for "hands free" mode may be quite an improvement.
Thanks again,
Sam
Double post...
The VF upgrade policy for software doesn't really concern me. I doubt that I would download it anyway as I always tend to use this site for anything like that.
In a few weeks hardSPL will be available, hopefully, and once the chefs get working on here there will be far superior ROMs available than anything VF can put together
I initially went for the 18 month contract, but the 3 months free and a fiver off my bill swung me to the 24 month one
Stunno,
Thanks for your thoughts... Interesting to hear how other think...
Obviously you are quite a hardcore smartphoner!! How do you deal with upgrading within contract? Do you just wait until the 21st month on the 24 when VF allows an upgrade or do you sell you the current phone and get an unlocked "newer" phone to use on the current contract?
Thanks,
Sam
Keep getting these hangs and thus double posts !!
A long time user yes, but I don't know about hardcore! I just read a lot and take grateful advantage of the excellent stuff that gets shared on here!
I tend to stick with the contract until upgrade time then look around for the phone that I want on the best deal. Apart from when I broke my Wizard, which at the time would have cost more to fix than to buy another phone! I got a great deal from Orange on a 12 month contract with a free Prophet which worked out cheaper than buying the phone!
Thanks. Appreciate the comment.

High demand for second hand Rhodiums?

Hello all,
I have my Rhodium(vodaphone TP2, unlocked with stuff) up for sale in the marketplace as I am rocking a HD2 now:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=670836
It is waiting for a good offer:
I have had people offering me silly cash for this nearly mint device (£100???)
Now I am thinking, is it really worth so little?
Most of the Rhodiums up 4 sale are in the US and around $300. I guess that we have too many phones in the UK available on a free contract.
I want £150 at least for it and need to get rid of it asap.....
Has anyone bought one recently in UK? What did you pay for it?
Is there any hope I might get some cash back on this now unloved device?
Kind regards all //
The HTC Desire has really killed sales of previous generation phones and the inexperienced/new user is now wowed by Android or Iphones.
Many people are also wary of buying second hand phones as one person's description of 'mint' may not be another person's idea (not saying anything at all about your advert here BTW, this is just a general point).
Many people are also frightened by scare stories of buying second hand phones
Branded phones can be a 'put-off' too even though they are only really cosmetic issues (although some people may worry about unlocking etc. and be concerned that it may not work with their sim when it arrives and then can't return it)
The rhodium is a super device, but there is only a very small market for them as only the smallest percentage of the phone buying public is even aware of the phone and then when added to the points above, I am not surprised that you are getting low offers, but I can also understand how disappointing this would be for a seller.
I went through something similar when selling my touch HD as I wanted it to go to someone who would love it as much as I did!
I think you have 2 options here;
Wait for someone who is looking for a rhodium and you can meet up in person (thus negating all the general points above)
Flog it to somewhere like CEX who might give you a decent (ish) price for it;
http://www.cex.co.uk/products/Phone... Touch Pro2, Vodafone Good Condition&mode=buy
Shame you are in London though, as I would have taken a look at this if you had been nearer to sunny Gloucestershire
Best of luck with your sale
Spud
i haven't looked into the prices for a used touch pro 2 but whenever I try to sell something online, i always get "low-ballers" THey email you some excuse that they're a student, just lost their job, just had a baby, etc and are tight on cash and want to only pay a quarter of the price i'm asking.
Its just the way things are, if you need to sell it asap, maybe lower the price a bit, but if i were you, i'd stay firm on your asking price until someone that has the money and knows the value of the device goes ahead an purchases it.

So... Anyone went ahead and bought a Lumia 800 today?

I'm tempted just because I'm up for an upgrade but I probably won't bother yet.
thanks to nokia excellent marketing, i was also tempted, but then i realised that it just isnt worth it, not for me anyway. i have an omnia 7, and although it has twice the memory and is 400mhz faster, it still hardly he 2nd gen phone i am looking for, even worse, it STILL dosnt have a front facing camera. shameful for a 2nd gen device, especially with skype coming around..... tut tut nokia, although the marketing for it has been excellent and i hope it does really well! but i wont be conned a second time around....
i would have bought it right now if i could move my sms.
No.. I have no money

Maybe we gotta harass the smart folks over in the hacking forum. Seems like it'd be fairly simple to dump/load SMS in homebrew.
i won 1 last week from a dutch tech-website.
have been using it for a week now
Used to have the omnia 7 and i'm still getting used to the smaller display of the Lumia
Turns out Vodafone won't let me early upgrade until the twenty-somethingth, but as I'm still sitting on the fence it will very much depend on how much they value my loyalty (and how much they want to compensate me for perpetually screwing up my bills, because I'm on a price plan that doesn't exist???)
You've got to hand it to Nokia though, they've done a damn good job especially with the advertising, this is EXACTLY what Windows Phone needs. This must have cost them a fair whack though:

Right in the middle of the Bullring in Birmingham...as well as prime positioning in Phones4U and a really very comprehensive campaign.
EDIT: Had I taken that shot from the other side of the centre, you could see it's right outside the Vodafone store, and the two O2 stores, although obviously anything that isn't an iPhone or Blackberry is beyond the comprehension of the O2 store employees...
i bought mine today but not in a shop rather over the phone it is currently in the ukmail depot and will be with me in 8-12 hours
These wave of phones are probably skippable if you have the first gen or you are not locked into a contract.

spot on nokias marketing is great i can go anywhere, without seeing the lumia around...this is how wp7 should have been marketed in the first place.

all nokia windows phone have an integrated "contat transfer" program for transfer contacts from symbian to windows phone via bluetooth
btw, the only reason for not buying a nokia lumia is the missing frontal cam IMHO.

That's still not a solution for what he wants, not sure why you answered that.
Oh and also a bigger screen is a good reason for not buying this phone, although that's not the debate here.
You know I was going to get an int'l model but I'll wait for the American version. By then the camera issues should have a firmware update and some maturation would've occurred. Elop keeps saying americans would get a different experience. If it involves FFC I'm sold. Period.
So can anyone confirm or deny if it is indeed "Funner", and if so, what on earth that means?!!
Some of the crap that comes out of marketing astounds me!
More seriously, it seems like a really nice phone from having played with it in store, but the small screen, and lack of FFC kill it for me. Hopefully they will pull their finger out and release something akin to the Ace specs that were leaked a while back.
I have had a play with one in store and I am sure this phone will appeal to the youngsters, it looks absolutely beautiful, but for me, at my age, the screen is too small, I will stick with my Titan until Nokia come out with a bigger phone. I really hope the lumia range is successful for the sake of wp7.
CAn you let me know where you got it? I am looking for an unlocked/unbranded devisce but none that i can see so far.
Thanks.
You can buy it unlocked sim-free at Phones4u for £400, how I got it, or at Carphone Warehouse for £470.
Thanks, just talked to rep from phones4u and they sais they only sell PAYG. No good for me. Checked their site and they seem to have the phone there as you say SIM free. I was going to place order now Im not sure as they stated at the side of the site that they prepare all SIM phones to be ready.
As you have one from them can you confirm that it is indeed SIM free and totally unbranded from Phones4U? if it is I will order one right now
