I would like to export them in any format.
Thanks

Backing up Contacts.. Something so simple is so complicated.

Alright.. theres three, no four options to back up contacts..
- google sync (which i still dont understand how this works properly, but it doesnt seem to)
- exporting to sd card PCSC vcf
- exporting to sd card GOOGLE vcf
- using a third party app to back up
now... google sync seems to be hit or miss with me and never has fully synced or replaced all my contacts appropriately.
exporting to pcsc vcf only exports SOME contacts
exporting to google vcf, once again, only exports certain ones too
and i dont see a point in using a 3rd party app.
can someone explain to me WTF is going on?
i have to backup both google vcf AND pcsc vcf, and import both to get my full contact list... what.theee..heck.

[Q] Is there a way to edit / de-dupe people database?

I can't sync to Google and I have 1,200+ database entries
(about 200 are actual contacts, the rest of either phantom or
empty entries, Google sync created). I'd like to clean up the
database but don't know what I need to do.
Does anyone have a utility to remove duplicate contacts,
either from the exported vcf file or the live database?
I can run a utility on any of Win32, Unix or the phone itself.
Thanks
Other than manually, I'm not entirely sure.
After reading your post, I would have to guess that you're in the data industry? I had never heard someone say de-dupe before I was introduced to the business myself.
log in to gmail, on your computer, under contacts, you can fix you duplicates there, and make all the changes you want, when it syncs again it will be fixed.
hope that works for you, did for me.
I would say go to gmail and export the contacts to CVS. then make the changes there... delete all contact in gmail... and import the shorter 200 list.
To me I think that would be the easiest way.
SoBBie
I'd just organize them according to the date created

cant you use export/import function? => export all contacts to SD, import into Google Account on phone and than delete the sim contacts.
Of course I can export to SD card and I can directly import such file to Thunderbird. But my idea is to sync contacts automaticaly (or on demand) my HTC to my PC and Android based tablet, using Google cloud (account) without deleting SD stored contacts. And i still want to have synchronised contact databse in PC, HTC and tablet even in off-line state that without logging to my Google account.
And I dont know how to import contacts from HTC to Google account. If the only possibily is to manually export contacts to SD card, more simple is to import such file directly to PC using for example "file expert". But I want to have all syncing work to be done automaticaly

sorry maybe I was not clear enough. I meant export it to a file on your phone and import it into your phone's google account. After that it will sync all contacts in your phone's gmail account to your gmail account (internet) which you can connect with your tablet or PC (not outlook though). Would be a cloud solution you are talking about I hope. At least thats the way I go, only got contacts in gmail anymore, no sim contacts or whatever.
---for import into your phone: go into "People" app, select import/export, select import, select into gmail, select exported contact file
Yes. Now I understand the way You suggest to do.
But I find most easy solution of the problem. There is small program avaliable in Android Market which allow syncing phone Android contact list directly to Thunderbird (linux based in my case) over network. So now I have my "private cloud" and I can sync tablet, PC (linux Mandriva) and phone without problems. Does not matter is it SD stored contacts, Goggle and so on. I think this is solution for WIN based PC too if Thunderbird is used as mail client (not tested by myself).

Cleaning up contacts?

ok - so I get that if I sync my Google contacts to my phone, I sometimes see a name or email address to someone I don't have saved as a contact. i.e. I put in a text and then put in a name and as I started typing the name, Steve, I saw the name of someone I emailed last year about some skis, Sam. I love how Google never forgets and saves names, numbers and emails of people you'll never contact again.
Anyhow, I cleaned up all my contacts and want to export them to my SD so that if I flash a new ROM I don't have to worry about losing my contacts. Some of my contacts don't have gmail/email/facebook, just names and numbers. I've done this in the past and when I import the contacts from my SD card - it ends up doubling or tripling up names in the contact list - all un-joined.
How can I export a clean list to the SD and import it back without creating 200 additional duplicate contacts?
Just clean and deal with your contacts from the Gmail site. Keeps things a lot simpler.

I ran into the same issue myself. what I did was, cleaned up the contacts on my phone, export it to my SD card (it saves as a 0001.vcf file, but you can rename it if you want).
I was going to flash a custom ROM, so I wiped everything. And since you are flashing a new ROM yourself, its usually better to do a full wipe anyway. Once I got my phone up and running, I disabled sync contacts with my google account and made sure my contact list was empty. Then I just imported my saved contacts.
I backed up my SMS messages with SMS backup the same way, available for free in the market.
If you go into contacts you can hit menu while in contacts and set it to
show only contacts with a phone number or such

I had this issue as well when i first came to the Droid world. I had all these weird contacts showing up when I would search a name for a text or what have you. Found out that I had Google set to save contacts I once had and deleted or even any email addresses that I had ever sent to. I went to contacts on gmail and cleaned everything out and set gmail settings to not save the emails anymore. Not sure if this will help you or not but I thought I would share.
There is an app on the market that will scan and fix duplicates, merge contacts, and other things. I forget the name but just search for "contact cleaner" and it should show up.

[Help] importing contacts vcf

Hi,
Im trying to move from nexus 4 to the G3 (nexus4 was used for a few weeks as backup phone ), exported the contacts from the nexus 4 via vcf file, which contains ~250 contacts.
When importing in the G3 it only imports one contact.
No idea what to do.
Tried downloading few vcf apps, they open up file ok but can't actually add it to the contacts in the phone.
Would really want to import the ckntacts via vcf and not through gmail.
Any ideas?
