Alright.. theres three, no four options to back up contacts..
- google sync (which i still dont understand how this works properly, but it doesnt seem to)
- exporting to sd card PCSC vcf
- exporting to sd card GOOGLE vcf
- using a third party app to back up
now... google sync seems to be hit or miss with me and never has fully synced or replaced all my contacts appropriately.
exporting to pcsc vcf only exports SOME contacts
exporting to google vcf, once again, only exports certain ones too
and i dont see a point in using a 3rd party app.
can someone explain to me WTF is going on?
i have to backup both google vcf AND pcsc vcf, and import both to get my full contact list... what.theee..heck.

I have my Gmail account setup so that I can utilise the various syncing options between my Desire and Google. I use iCal successfully but am having trouble understanding how best to sync my phone contacts.
I always save a new contact to the phone but it seems that unless I also save them as a google contact on the phone, there is no way those numbers will sync to my Google contacts. Surely I don't have to save everything twice?

As far as I know the safest method of saving all your contact is to sync them with Google. I only have one set of contacts on my device and they are always in sync with Google, therefore the need for me to keep duplicate copies on my device diminished.
It is also very easy to then access your Google contacts from a PC and make any necessary changes, or indeed make the changes via your device.

Scott
So are you saying that I may as well just save them as Google contacts to begin with and not bother saving them to the phone or the sim card?
Some days ago, I also started the sync for all of my contact to google because I wanted to have them in some backup place. Now all my contacts are in google and if I create a new one I always create it as a google contact (otherwise no sync of course).
I transfered them the following way:
Contacts -> Menu -> Export to SD Card -> Select Phone or Sim (whatever you are saving on currently) : now you have all your contacts exported into one file
then
Contacts -> Menu -> Import from SD Card -> Select Google: now you should have all your contacts in your "google" phonebook
then
change the contact folder to google (will not show dupliactes)
then
sync with google
I saw that, after the sync, I had various double entries in my google account but you can merge them, works fine.
hope it helps a little with your problem, for me it was the easiest way to sync my phone contacts to google
Hi guys,
I seem to have cocked up my contacts through a load of synchronising and messing about.
I now need to delete ALL my phone contacts but NOT the Google contacts (because I want to import the Google contacts after).
The problem is, everytime I delete a phone contact (ie. Have only PHONE visible in contacts list and delete) it also deletes from Google (even though Google is hidden).
This is probably because they're linked contacts... but I have HUNDREDS of linked contacts, also with Facebook etc to show the photos. It took hours setting up all the links and I don't want to break them.
What do I do? :-S I'm really confused.
Thanks
Matt
PS: This came about because I'd accidentally been adding NEW contacts to Google rather than my phone. All I wanted to do was get the 10 extra contacts from Google onto my Phone also (then link them). So i exported the Google contacts to SD card and then imported them to phone from SD Card. It created duplicates on the phone (so now there's 2x more contacts listed in the Phone storage).
Did you try disabling synchronize for google account before deleted action?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
thanks. Tried and it doesn't help. I disabled all synchronisation, unchecked Contacts in the Google account... and it still deleted it.
Re-enabled sync and hoped it would still have a copy on the Google account but it hasn't, it really deleted it.
:-S
But you've the vcf file from your last backup process in your sdcard right?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
yep i just exported google contacts to SD card so I have a copy.
I just want to delete ALL phone contacts and re-import.
When I delete a phone contact though it deletes the Google contact also! And god knows what happens to the Facebook contact (not risking deleting one that's linked to Facebook)
Hej,
When you initailly set up you phone, you setup HTC sync & Google Sync by default. 1. Disable Google Sync, it will delete/not show all the synced google contacts
2. Create a Google Exchange account & sync.
3. Enable linked contacts with facebook (or you can disable facebook sync altogether as I did so as not to have duplicate entries (having mobile number of John twice)
Hope this helps
PJS
thanks for the replies guys.
I've fixed it as follows...
Deleted Facebook account.
Deleted Facebook for HTC Sense account
Deleted all contacts (also from Gmail)
Restarted phone
Imported SD card to Google
Resync'd
Added Facebook accounts
Relinked everything.
What a ball ache! :-S
Thanks again
So my mom recently got a samsung galaxy s3, she originally had a galaxy nexus, and before that an envy 2.
We used verizon backup assistant to backup all the contacts on her envy 2, because that was the only simple contact backup available for the envy.
She now has
A. Google sync backing up all her NEWER contacts
B. Backup assistant backing up her older contacts
C. A bunch of hotmail contacts.
Basically I created a huge mess... If I were to use backup assistant on the SGS3, how would I go about changing each and every contact to sync with google past that point?
I'm just wondering if there is a simple way to go about this without going through each and every contact.

In people or contacts there should be an option your whole library as a .vcf . If you put that file on the new phone it will get all your contacts. But in reality your Google account should be backing up All your contacts. I had issues back in the of days with duplicate contacts. Turns out if you go into gmail on a computer there is an option to merge duplicates. If you don't think they are all being synced with Google then the .vcf method would be the safest. Then if you get dups just merge them in gmail

Here is what I did.
Removed the hotmail account.
Exported the contact list and then imported into google
Merged contacts
Done
What I thought would happen originally was that removing my hotmail account would leave all the contacts associated with it, this was not the case.

If I export the list and then import it to google. Do I need to delete contacts between exporting and importing as I assume your phone will have duplicates on the phone itself? (I already have contacts on the phone and not google so not sure if importing will now just cause the phone to have duplicates)
It depends on how your contacts were originally backed up. Assuming you wanted to start over clean it would export all your contacts, then clear the app data for the contacts (this will delete everything!) and then import the file into Google on your pc.

New question: How do I sync contacts stored on the device to Google? When creating a brand new contact on the phone it asks where you want to save it, but for contacts that are imported via Bluetooth you have no choice as to where they are saved. Thus, I have contacts on the device I want uploaded to Google and can't figure out how to do that.
--Original Post--
Ok, this is a silly question. I have a second S4 which is for work. I have a gmail account specifically for that device (Google Apps corporate stuff as seen HERE), it syncs with my office outlook, etc. That said, I have a number of contacts on my personal S4 which I had been using until I got the company S4 which I want to now send to the work S4 so I can delete them from my personal S4.
Now then, what I want to happen is to be able to send the contact, have it upload to Google, and be done (thus also syncing with my Outlook in my office, etc). What I tried was to open contacts, menu/import/export/share namecard via/Bluetooth and sent them via Bluetooth. That worked, they show up in my contact list just fine, and they are stored on the device. Problem is, they don't seem to upload to Google.
Once (if?) they do, I want to be able to delete them from the device so they are ONLY stored on Google. Will deleting them from the device also delete them from Google again? How would I resolve this conflict if so? I don't want to sit and manually type all these contacts out into Google via web browser (or the phone) to have them sync down to the phone. One would think there would be another way...
Silly questions, I know. But hey, maybe someone has done this before.
I don't exactly remember where it is but if you're using the stock rom if you go to settings (don't know where it really is) there's some feature that allow you to do that, contacts msgs etc.. Its not group play but it's similar to it.. If you're using the stock rom then look for it kuz that's one of the things I first saw when I got the s4...

Ok, so I ended up just sending all the contacts via Bluetooth since I needed them. That works fine, however they still haven't uploaded to Google. Web searching reveals lots of people with this issue.
New question: How do you force sync contacts stored on the device to Google?

Settings->Accounts->Google->your account->Sync now should work.
It doesn't.
To the top, still looking for an answer here.
Try this
Select all the contacts that's on device and export it to sd card.
Now chose import from sd card and select which gmail account to import to.
The phone will scan the sd card and should pick up the file you exported earlier.
Edit: I just make up a bunch of contacts and save it to my device. Did the export to sd and import to my gmail account and it sync.

You're a genius. Since this is a work phone and didn't come with one, I had no SD card in it and obviously didn't want to spend my own money on one for it, thus the export to SD wasn't an option listed. I took the old SD card from my Sensation 4G, did as you suggested, and it worked. Thanks so much!
The only downside was that since I had so many contacts, I got a couple errors that I was trying to do too many at once. Hopefully it all panned out, I will be able to check Monday at the office. I am hoping the new contacts added here will sync down to my Outlook at work, but I think they will.
Thanks again!
EDIT: Everything worked fine. Thanks again!
My aliexpress motorola x30 keeps deleating my contacts on the phone "contacts" app. Keep changing the order in the names. Also keeps deleating the "+" in the whats app saved contacts.
Keeps "forgeting" the contacts (in the app) i imported through .csv file to google contacts or the phone's memory. (I did it both ways many times)
please help.
I'm facing this same issue. I already tried these things:
- Deleated all contacts and imported again;
- Downloaded google contacts apps and imported them to a google account;
- Tried others google account;
Maybe it's a rom problem... I can't figure it out! =/

Hi.
My contacts were a mess, so in the .csv format i edit them in microsoft excel, fist. ( the mess was that i export them from many phones so the +52 1 were add and the phone/whatsapp couldnt read them in that format).
So after i edit them, i save them in .csv format from excel and import then in google account linked with the phone... Same tragedy ... (I use google contacts app). So i try to import them to the google contacts app but i couldnt from the phone (google contact app), you only have the option in the gmail app, account manager - people & sharing, contacts - import).
So i open the phone's original contacts app, and then try to import the .csv contacts but it only could read .vcf files. so i imported the contacts to gmail again and exported them in "vcards (ios only)" format which is a .vcf file.
Then i downloaded the new .vcf file and imported them in the phone's original contacts app. Since 8am and until now. No contact have been erease or "forgoten" from the phone. (I imported this file to the "phones" memory and turn off the auto sync with the gmail account).
Hope it works for you too!
I'm experiencing the same issues and I didn't find solution ,
also there is anther problem that some of my contacts their name not show when they call , some of them not all.
Hope some one find how to fix this annoying issues.
