New question: How do I sync contacts stored on the device to Google? When creating a brand new contact on the phone it asks where you want to save it, but for contacts that are imported via Bluetooth you have no choice as to where they are saved. Thus, I have contacts on the device I want uploaded to Google and can't figure out how to do that.
--Original Post--
Ok, this is a silly question. I have a second S4 which is for work. I have a gmail account specifically for that device (Google Apps corporate stuff as seen HERE), it syncs with my office outlook, etc. That said, I have a number of contacts on my personal S4 which I had been using until I got the company S4 which I want to now send to the work S4 so I can delete them from my personal S4.
Now then, what I want to happen is to be able to send the contact, have it upload to Google, and be done (thus also syncing with my Outlook in my office, etc). What I tried was to open contacts, menu/import/export/share namecard via/Bluetooth and sent them via Bluetooth. That worked, they show up in my contact list just fine, and they are stored on the device. Problem is, they don't seem to upload to Google.
Once (if?) they do, I want to be able to delete them from the device so they are ONLY stored on Google. Will deleting them from the device also delete them from Google again? How would I resolve this conflict if so? I don't want to sit and manually type all these contacts out into Google via web browser (or the phone) to have them sync down to the phone. One would think there would be another way...
Silly questions, I know. But hey, maybe someone has done this before.
I don't exactly remember where it is but if you're using the stock rom if you go to settings (don't know where it really is) there's some feature that allow you to do that, contacts msgs etc.. Its not group play but it's similar to it.. If you're using the stock rom then look for it kuz that's one of the things I first saw when I got the s4...

Ok, so I ended up just sending all the contacts via Bluetooth since I needed them. That works fine, however they still haven't uploaded to Google. Web searching reveals lots of people with this issue.

Settings->Accounts->Google->your account->Sync now should work.
It doesn't.
To the top, still looking for an answer here.
Try this
Select all the contacts that's on device and export it to sd card.
Now chose import from sd card and select which gmail account to import to.
The phone will scan the sd card and should pick up the file you exported earlier.
Edit: I just make up a bunch of contacts and save it to my device. Did the export to sd and import to my gmail account and it sync.

You're a genius. Since this is a work phone and didn't come with one, I had no SD card in it and obviously didn't want to spend my own money on one for it, thus the export to SD wasn't an option listed. I took the old SD card from my Sensation 4G, did as you suggested, and it worked. Thanks so much!
The only downside was that since I had so many contacts, I got a couple errors that I was trying to do too many at once. Hopefully it all panned out, I will be able to check Monday at the office. I am hoping the new contacts added here will sync down to my Outlook at work, but I think they will.
Thanks again!
EDIT: Everything worked fine. Thanks again!

I've been looking around for a long time in searching this site and other forum sites and no one really had the answer i was looking for, so im only wondering about this. Since we've all been rooted, i decided to install a ROM, and when i finally had it booted and everything, i was prompted to put my google account in to sync my contacts. But they didnt show up? Now mind you, i only have 1 google account, and that is the one i created at verizon when i asked for the DI2. Im currently on the Stock right now with all my data. in Settings >Account & Sync, i have the backup assistant, facebook, the google account, mail news and twitter. In the muiu ROM, i put that google account in but never got my contacts back. So my question is, are there other ways of backing up your contacts without erasing them to your SD card, OR SIM CARD? when i go to export contacts, it wants to save it as a file in my SD card, and then when i import them on another rom, it asks for a Vcard, but it doesnt work? Can anyone explain this to me?
Sync the contacts to your google account. I believe it asks you when adding a contact if you want them as a google contact or phone only. Make sure you select google contact. Then check the "sync contacts" box under your google account sync settings (its checked by default, but I uncheck it once its done to save battery life. Don't know if you do the same). Then force a resync of contacts before you change roms to make sure no new contacts or info are left out. From there change to any rom, or any other android phone and your contacts will be restored on the initial sign in.

yeah i see what your saying. In the people app, when i click menu, and then view contacts, it says with Facebook fot HTC Sense, i have 538 contacts, my Google account has 4, and the Phone has 179. How to save all the phone contacts to my google account?
Not sure myself. Never tried it and I dont know if you can change a phone contact to a google contact once the info has already been put in. Try GO contacts from the market? Lets you back up all your contacts. Haven't tried it but I've backed up and restored texts with GO SMS from the same developer, and it worked great. Im assuming it would work just as well.

My sister has a business and she uses her EVO as a business phone, she has around 7,000 contacts saved in the phone, The problem is now that it is messing up the phones memory taking 218 MB of Space. I understand How to Import/Export contacts to gmail via .VCF file but the contacts are just copied and put on the gmail account and remain on the phone. When I go to settings, Accounts and sync. I tap the sync button but nothing really happens and the date remains the same. I dont know how to remove the contacts from the phones memory and keep them only on gmail. Im afraid if I start randomly deleting I may lose 7,000+ contacts and You guys would be reading my obituary. What do you recommend I do? Thanks!
Some brief googling, it woud seem you have to manually add them one by one into gmail via a computer (Easiest method of this mundane method, irony?) and then sync your contacts to the phone via your google account. This way when you switch phone just add google account and BAM, all contacts. I'll look for an easier way.

Further googling, I found this. Idk if you've tried this, seeing as you mentioned VCF, but give this a whirl.
First you will want to transfer your old contacts off your phone
To export contacts to an SD card:
SDcard must be inserted and "mounted".
From the home screen, touch Contacts
Touch the Menu Key, press More
Touch Import/Export
Touch Export to SD card
Handset will confirm VCF filename.
Contacts will be located in the root directory on your sdcard as a .vcf file.
Now, plug your phone into your computer, and mount it as a disk drive. Next you need to import these contacts to Google Contacts

Also, verify in gmail that the contacts are indeed there. IF in fact they are all indeed there, it is safe to delete them as they will be in google. I think that even though they are backed up, since they are on the phone already, gmail wont sync twice.... But I've always synced to gmail instead of phone so, I wouldn't really know much on the subject. Sorry, Hope this helps though

You got it, back up online through gmail and save the file to a conputer, that is 2 safe places.
Done, move on.

Hi guys. I am looking to root my device and install CM9.
My question however regards data and contacts. Will the install process erase all my data on my phone? Will I lose my contacts?
Thanks in advance.
If you're on sense, (which you probably are) then you can backup contacts thru the people app. Not sure what you mean by data tho. Or, if you have your contacts synced with your Google account, you just sync your Google account on cm9

Data is sd card such as pics, music, videos etc will not be deleted, but data in the rom will be deleted if that what you want to know.
Thanks guys. The problem I have is that not all my contacts are saved to my Google account. There are some contacts that for whatever reason never transferred over to Google. I always save my contacts to Google and not the phone but some just don't transfer over.
I think the problem stems from the fact that until I got my Palm Pre I had a regular dumb phone. As I used the Pre more and more all the contacts added to the Pre were added to Google and the ones before the Pre were not.
I guess I need to find a way to export ALL my contacts to Google.

Thanks for the tip I did that but it only allows me to export either the Google contacts as one file or the Phone contacts as one file.
It won't let me do them together as one file.

Copy contacts to SD card or sim card , or put them in a csv file that you can upload to Google.

I use a calendar program called Jorte. It allows me to either save my events on my phone or sync with Google Calendar. I refuse to deal with Google anything (except GMail) and Jorte saves the day.
What I cannot find is a Dialer with Contacts List that DOES NOT sync with Google Contacts. I really do not want my contacts residing on someone's server. I know it is too late and they now have the data, but new and future contacts I prefer to keep private.
So, a Stand Alone Contacts List that will link to the dialer and reside all contacts either on the phone or SD Card (for XT1045 owners). Is there anything out there that already exists or could one of our fantastic developers throw a simple apk together for us?
Thanks for reading.
I don't like my contacts to be on server, too. You just don't sync. Furthermore, I also use standalone calendar which doesn't sync with Google.

Jazzh, if I don't sync, or disconnect from my gmail account, my contact go away. Did you find a work around for that? I wonder if I were to put them in the favorites they would be basically saved to the phone. Hmmm...
Which rom do you have?
On every rom I had I could do what I described. And my contacts are not being deleted in any way...

Well, I thought I had done that before but did not work. I just tried it again (per you recommendation) and now it worked. I cleared out my Google Contacts list and the phone still shows the contacts. Thanks.
Glad it worked out for you . Cheers !
It looks like my new contacts that I add on my note sync's with google sometimes. I'm not sure why but it seems like some contacts will sync with no issues and be on my google account with no issues then some of them only syncs to my phone. Anyone have any idea why this is happening?
for whatever reason, new contacts get stored on the phone, I had made a post a while back about this.
added new contacts to the phone, and expected them to go to exchange, found out they were stored on the phone, on my old S2 I had the option to change where the contact was stored, directly from the phone.
that is not an option on this phone currently.
my workaround was to create the contact in outlook, so it would go to exchange, then it will sync to phone. in your case, probably just create the contact at the google website, then let it sync to you phone.
Yeah, that's what I started to do but it's just annoying because I grab a friends number on the fly and not remember to do that. I just find it weird that it only works sometimes.

Are you selecting Google contact as your option as it seems to default to device if you do not specify.
When I add a contact, it always gives me a choice where to store it. I always choose Google.
You know sometimes it's the simple things that get overlooked.. I totally missed that option when creating a new contact. I was trying to find a way to change where it was stored after it was created.
Thanks for the helpful info.
