cant you use export/import function? => export all contacts to SD, import into Google Account on phone and than delete the sim contacts.

Of course I can export to SD card and I can directly import such file to Thunderbird. But my idea is to sync contacts automaticaly (or on demand) my HTC to my PC and Android based tablet, using Google cloud (account) without deleting SD stored contacts. And i still want to have synchronised contact databse in PC, HTC and tablet even in off-line state that without logging to my Google account.
And I dont know how to import contacts from HTC to Google account. If the only possibily is to manually export contacts to SD card, more simple is to import such file directly to PC using for example "file expert". But I want to have all syncing work to be done automaticaly

sorry maybe I was not clear enough. I meant export it to a file on your phone and import it into your phone's google account. After that it will sync all contacts in your phone's gmail account to your gmail account (internet) which you can connect with your tablet or PC (not outlook though). Would be a cloud solution you are talking about I hope. At least thats the way I go, only got contacts in gmail anymore, no sim contacts or whatever.
---for import into your phone: go into "People" app, select import/export, select import, select into gmail, select exported contact file

Yes. Now I understand the way You suggest to do.
But I find most easy solution of the problem. There is small program avaliable in Android Market which allow syncing phone Android contact list directly to Thunderbird (linux based in my case) over network. So now I have my "private cloud" and I can sync tablet, PC (linux Mandriva) and phone without problems. Does not matter is it SD stored contacts, Goggle and so on. I think this is solution for WIN based PC too if Thunderbird is used as mail client (not tested by myself).

After that you boot to android and set up your google account. It should sync the contacts automatically.

worked for me
outlook
I syncronized them using activesync to outlook. exported tot a .csv.
imported the csv in GMAil, en sync-ed my kaiser android with that google account
Why do it easy when you can do it the hard way
I can copy the SIM contacts to phone, but i can't copy back to SIM card, any idea?
That's because android phones are supposed to sync with the cloud. Not the sim card.
Get yourself a google mail account, setup calendar online (google) then sync - look at their instructions for active sync.
Boot to androd and sync to google
works well as if like me you're running via haret then contacts and calendar stay in sync windows / android and my email too
shame it can't do tasks and sms
WHY? DO IT THE EASY WAY!!!
Go to contacts (android), press the windows button on your kaiser and select import-import from sim?
Sprite mobile
another easy way of doing that is using
sprite mobile

My question is... how do we sync pics from facebook to the contacts? I've imported/syncd all my contacts from facebook but it won't show pics for them :-(
DJHile, if you're using my build it should sync pics, I choose 'sync with existing contacts' and it shows the pics automatically.

Poly, I am indeed using your build and used the exact same sync option as you but unfortunately, I get nothing but the android silhouette :-\
I do have quite a few contacts but none of them have a picture.
EDIT: I'm a dummy. It won't sync if I'm not getting some sort of data connection or wi-fi connection which I wasn't when I posted this... Then I installed the wifi fix update, wifi is good and somehow it fixed my cellular data connection problem also... contacts are syncing now!
i used sprite migrate to transfer my contacts...allthough it did not appear in google market so i downloaded and installed it manually...then when i opened the application in android it said that the version is expired(just downloaded from the site...)so if anyone intend to use it you just have to adjust the date 1 year ago...eg. 11/3/2009 instead of 11/3/2010...hope this helps someone...
thanx man!u have solved me problem, genius man

Google Contacts newbie

Right, this is my first smartphone, so can someone explain something to me.
I don't have a Gmail account (I use the HTC Mail thing to access my Sky email account when I want to)
What I don't understand is the whole "Google Contacts" thing?
Where do these contacts sync to?
Can I enter the contacts on my phone and then sync them to the Internet (rather than have them stored on my phone?)
Do I need a Gmail account for this?
Any help and tips would be gratefully recieved.
Thanks
Yes you need a google account,
And yes the phone will automatically sync the contacts to your google account.

The google contacts will sync to your gmail account, and be stored on the internet.
Creating a gmail account is fast and easy and you get a rediculous amount of storage (mine is at 7447 MB right now, and I am only useing 200 some MBs and I never delete things and have had the service since 2004).

with google/gmail account you have an access to plenty of google services -- google contacts is one of them.
htc desire has it's own People program that manages contacts for you. it can store your contacts for you in three different places:
- sim card
- phone
- google account
if you choose to store your contact as google contact, your phone will automatically submit your contact to google contacts service. so that you can manage your contacts there, sync with other devices/services that can use google contacts service, etc.
contacts stored on the phone or on sim card are, simply put, local to the phone -- not easily available elsewhere (i guess that you have to use htc sync, to push them somewhere)
how it works for me? i keep all my contacts as google contacts, so that when i add contact on my phone, it's automatically available on google contacts service site. most of the time i add contacts using webpage -- as it's faster -- these contacts are synced to my phone automatically as well.
VERY IMPORTANT: do not add birth date to your google contacts on your phone -- such contacts won't sync properly -- they will just disappear from the phone \-: luckly most of my contacts are linked with their facebook accounts -- and People app gets brith date form there.
I can't sync the contacts in both ways... only from the gmail account to the pda. There is any explanation?
Maybe the contacts on your phone are set to be "Phone" contacts rather than "Google" contacts? If you did sync them from Outlook to your phone, then that's the case. To convert all of them to Google contacts, export them to the SD card, delete all and re-import them. Then it will ask whether they should be Phone- or Google-contacts.
Thanks, I will try.

[Q] Syncing contacts with Google

I have my Gmail account setup so that I can utilise the various syncing options between my Desire and Google. I use iCal successfully but am having trouble understanding how best to sync my phone contacts.
I always save a new contact to the phone but it seems that unless I also save them as a google contact on the phone, there is no way those numbers will sync to my Google contacts. Surely I don't have to save everything twice?

As far as I know the safest method of saving all your contact is to sync them with Google. I only have one set of contacts on my device and they are always in sync with Google, therefore the need for me to keep duplicate copies on my device diminished.
It is also very easy to then access your Google contacts from a PC and make any necessary changes, or indeed make the changes via your device.

Scott
So are you saying that I may as well just save them as Google contacts to begin with and not bother saving them to the phone or the sim card?
Some days ago, I also started the sync for all of my contact to google because I wanted to have them in some backup place. Now all my contacts are in google and if I create a new one I always create it as a google contact (otherwise no sync of course).
I transfered them the following way:
Contacts -> Menu -> Export to SD Card -> Select Phone or Sim (whatever you are saving on currently) : now you have all your contacts exported into one file
then
Contacts -> Menu -> Import from SD Card -> Select Google: now you should have all your contacts in your "google" phonebook
then
change the contact folder to google (will not show dupliactes)
then
sync with google
I saw that, after the sync, I had various double entries in my google account but you can merge them, works fine.
hope it helps a little with your problem, for me it was the easiest way to sync my phone contacts to google

[Q] How to backup and restore

How can I backup my Windows Phone (Optimus 7) and restore it after a factory reset?
What will be backed up and what will not?
How to backup and restore if I want to register my phone after the factory reset with a DIFFERENT Live account?
being able to backup/restore the phone is coming in the first update due out in the next couple of weeks, otherwise, I don't think anything else is out there.
Any tips, workarounds etc?
(I will not be the first running into this problem.)
Any possibility to copy stuff from one Live account to another Live account (contacts, agenda, pictures)?
I had my surround die and when I got my replacement I synced it to the Zune desktop client and it restored everything, including added contacts and pictures. I set it up with my coresponding live account and facebook first and it came back like I never changed phones.
WLive will sync everything back to the phone.
But it is better to sync pictures by Zune because when you upload them they get idiotically resized.
The main reason I want to backup and restore is that I want to reset the phone and register it under a different Live account.
Registering under a different Live account ('B') would not allow me to restore from my current Live account ('A') to my new account ('B') would it?
in terms of contacts and calendar, you can easily copy/paste them accross using outlook and outlook connector. SMS do not back up. with an xbox you can transfer your xbox account to another windows live account. though i'm not sure what happens to purchases, that's all.

No. I never try to keep them around long anyway, but as far as I know there is no native support in Zune to backup text/mms messages. I save the mms pictures I want and they get synced to Zune.
So far I found these to work (pitty that there is no tutorial/wiki yet).
How to copy Contacts and Calendar from one Live account to another:
Contacts:
1. Login to Live/Hotmail account A then Export Contacts to CSV file.
2. Login to Live/Hotmail account B then Import Contacts CSV file.
Calendar:
Requires Microsoft Outlook:
1. Download Microsoft Outlook Connector for Hotmail
2. Install it
3. Add Live/Hotmail account A to Outlook
4. Add Live/Hotmail account B to Outlook
5. Display calendars from account A and B in list view
6. Select all appointments from account A
7. Then copy (or move) selected appointments to account B's calendar.
8. And send/receive changes to Live accounts.
How to save Images/Video/Music from the Phone to PC (so they can be restored later):
Use Zune for syncrohronizing to PC
and/or
Use registry hack to 'connect Windows Phone 7 as USB storage device' and copy the files/folders manually.
For saving SMS and Email I could not find a solution.

[Q] Move contacts from phone to gmail

My girl stored all her contacts in phone memory instead of with Google and everytime I upgrade her phone I have to make sure to back them up and restore them. What is the quickest, easiest way to move all contacts to Google after restoring them?
Thanks.
Export your contacts to your sd card via contacts>menu>import/export. Then log into gmail on your pc, hook up your phone, import your contacts to gmail, delete contacts off phone, sync to gmail then all your contacts will be on your phone as gmail contacts to sync up anytime you wipe your phone etc.

Nice! So look for the vcf to import on gmail?
You don't have to go on Gmail on the computer. You can do it all right on your phone.

This...
and to explain a little bit more, when you export your contacts on the phone, it creates the vcf file on your sdcard, and when you hit the import/export button again, you then choose import, and select the gmail account instead of phone, then the contacts you just backed up get uploaded to the associated gmail account instead of just restoring them on the phone locally.
