Has anyone upgraded to something better/worthwhile than the V30? I'm looking for ideas of something to use on Metro PCS/ Metro by T-Mobile.
Moving on from the V30
I've had my V30 for 3 years now. Came to it from a Turbo that served me well for years too. The 30 has and still works awesome thanks to all the help from xda gurus. I enjoy the freedoms of having an unlocked and rooted phone. I was wondering...

I found I no longer needed root, and went to the S10+, and it's been great for me.

I chose the S10 because it still had a headphone jack, which my wife and I did want to retain, at least for now. Next time, I think I could give that up, as it seems that's how things are going these days.
Mine is an SM-G975U1, which is the non-5G version. I didn't care about 5G, as I don't have it in my area anyway. Fact is, most places don't have true 5G, so who cares? There is an updated version of the S10 with 5G, so you'll have to see what you want.

Well I do want to keep a headphone jack, wireless charging, Water resistance rating, rooting I am not sure if I really need any more. I think Vanced youtube can work on non rooted devices so I may not need it. But with 5G coming out I figured if I upgrade I may as well get one that can do it.
Yes, all the hardware you need is on the S10 series (last Samsung series that keeps the headphone jack). Wireless charging is there, as is water resistance. AFAIK, no Samsung is rootable anymore (early S10 was, and Exynos CPU still are, but USA versions with Snapdragon are not, particularly if updated to current stock ROM versions). Blame the US carriers for this nonsense.
I have Vanced on my phone, and it works fine.
5G is currently really just marketing nonsense. Unless you're in a big city, you're not going to get "True" 5G with mmWave technology, because that signal just doesn't travel far. Without mmWave, you're stuck with Sub-6G frequencies, which are a little faster than LTE, but not a lot... so I don't think it's worth bothering yet, unless you can get it cheaply.
See: https://www.androidauthority.com/sub-6ghz-vs-mmwave-5g-3051246/
Thank you for that link it was informative.

I have no idea why anyone on xda site or other development places would by snapdragon. I just bought s8 and learned that they are no cuctom roms no kernels since bootloader for north america is locked due to corporate greed and lack of right regulation other than self lobbing corruption. (normal gov should slap companies for locking it should be prohibited) and i feel that i was spat in the face. Same way just can buy bloody snobbish applephone and what's the difference. Don't buy snaprdagon, buy from another location for exynos or buy another phone. Don't let them spit in your face. Coz they will continue to do so.

I assumed that it was for all s8's. that there will be at least a few for snapdragons and didn't check well before i buy, i own s7e exynos and was having much confidence in samsung, but they are as a leaf that bends to every wind that blows on them. I also have tab s2 810. exynos while only snapdragon t813 version of it gets new development only. unpredictable. I would have bout snapdragon only if it was dirt cheap compared to exynos dirt cheap.
I was eyeing unlocked s9 for a while but then i realized if i can't get custom rom in a year after warranty ends and i can't take full control of my phone. Scumsung will not keep updating this phone indefinitely. i can't put latest lineage on it, so WTF am i going to do with it. I already have one motorola rooted lineage phone that i can probably put pie based lineage on it when it becomes available. Excellent support here. My last scumsung phone was galaxy s3 which i rooted and custom rommed. No problems. I must've gone throught 7-8 verizon locked bootloader phones which i could not root and had to get rid of. This is seriously insane. I can't understand why cripple such flagship in us&a. Of course i won't touch s9 or any future scumsung phone which will have permanently locked bl. Same for verizon or any others. Motorola, Huawei don't cripple their phones. Will be looking into those.
Hey guys,
I just purchased the 4G Note 10+ from Samsung in the US (I'm on Sprint and they only offered the 5G for Verizon customers). I currently have a Note 5 (about time for an upgrade). My concern is that after a bunch of research, I won't be able to do the things I've enjoyed doing on my Note 5. So, I am considering returning the one I ordered from Samsung in the US and ordering the Note 10+ Exynos version from a website like Clove so that I can still root it. I don't care about Samsung Pay or WiFi calling, so I'm fine losing those.
From my understanding, CDMA doesn't work well with Sprint on Exynos. I even heard some talk about it being throttled. Should I be concerned?
Will the 5G work with Sprint now or in the future, even though they have an exclusive deal with Verizon right now and are there any gotchas?
Can I just request a SIM card from Sprint or I do I need to do something funky with an international SIM first?
Is there anything else to look out for or that I'm not considering?

From my understanding and looking through eBay at the international note 10 listings the exynos phone is GSM only. It will not work with Sprint or Verizon at all.

Thank you. I believe you are absolutely right. You just saved me a lot of hassle.
I'm going to return the phone I ordered and wait for the (hopefully) OnePlus 7 Pro 5G Sprint variant to come out.
Honestly, I was tired of having to choose between being able to backup my phone (basically all I want root for) or being able to encrypt my phone (which is lost when you root it). With the OnePlus 7 Pro I could do all that, not have a hole in my screen, it's cheaper, and would be 5G too. So whatever. I'll miss the SDCard and wireless charging, but that's about it. Too bad neither have a headphone jack, that might have kept me on it too. Okay, done ranting. Thanks again!

Is purchasing a Pixel 2 XL in 2019 worth it? I had originally purchased this phone immediately upon release but then the news of the screen issues surfaced and I cancelled my order. I was purchasing one sight unseen and didn't want to get a device with issues. I went and looked at roughly 6 devices between Best Buy and Verizon, after cancelling my order, and they all exhibited pretty significant blue shift and each phone was slightly different. This made cancelling my order a smart thing in my opinion. Paying $900+ for a phone with a crappy screen isn't something I would ever consider. I bought the Galaxy S9+ instead and it's display is utterly astonishing, truly spectacular.
Now to the present, I have just purchased two Pixel 2 XLs, one a factory replacement and the other a lightly used unit. Paid $330 total and I thought that was an excellent deal. The interesting thing is that both these phones have screen that are significantly better than the ones I viewed nearly 2 years ago. They are for my parents as Christmas gifts and it's now got me thinking that maybe I should jump on one.
I found the below listing on eBay and was wonder if it seems legit. Says the devices are new. Should I take a shot at one you think?

It seems legit, and that's a good price, however, it appears to be a Verizon variant, which means you probably can't unlock the bootloader if you wanted to root it.

That's what I was thinking but the way the guy lists the heading is confusing. If you look at the item details it says AT&T, T-Mobile, Unlocked, Verizon. Would be easier if it just stated unlocked and works with all major US carriers. In any case I have asked the seller a direct question to confirm the fact it is unlocked. I am still rocking my S9+ which just updated to Android 10 and have been thrilled with it, but not having root and the ability to backup all my data is annoying. Even though the displays on the devices I just bought are way better than the initial XL releases, they still aren't as good as the S9+. Samsung simply makes the best displays. Hard to pass up $269 for a brand new factory Pixel 2 XL though. Unfortunately the Pixel 3 XL and Pixel 4 XL just don't do it for me, and the 4 XL isn't getting great reviews.

I hear ya on the Sammy displays! My wife's note 9 display is beautiful. Having said that, it still has stutters from time to time, lots of bloat, and no root. I absolutely love my rooted P4XL despite what the reviews say. Runs like a champ, and I get 2 day battery life because I'm a light user. I came from the P2XL, which I still keep as my backup. It was a great device for 2 years, and still works great. However, it feels really slow compared to my P4XL :good:

Did the P4XL go back to using Samsung displays? I know the P2XL used LG P-OLED. I just wish they wouldn't hadn't done away with the fingerprint biometric reader.
It's a tough choice to give up my S9+ and try out the P2XL. I've got used to the S9+ and the UI doesn't bother me, especially since I installed the Pixel 2 XL Launcher . The S9+ is snappy and beautiful, but not root capable, and that's a bummer. S9+ also has expandable memory, wireless charging, and headphone jack. Man it's a tough call, I've been kicking it around for days now. The money isn't the issue at all, it's the giving up the S9+ itself, I have enjoyed it. It's the best not rooted phone I have ever had, and I haven't had a single issue with it. In the end, I am still looking to switch to the Pixel platform, but definitely didn't like the P3XL and I'm still evaluating the P4XL. We'll see what the P5XL brings to the table.

Nope, Snapdragon version can't be rooted. It really does suck as Android still doesn't allow backup of all app data via Google drive backup. I should say that developers have disabled backup within their app, Google doesn't control it. So you're left completely setting up your new phone for the apps that don't allow Google drive backup. Samsung has a great app, Smart Switch, but it still suffers from app developers who have disabled app backup.

Unfortunately, I have tried this and any app that has ADB backup disabled will not backup. This is the same method the app Helium attempts to use and many apps won't backup because the developer has set ADB backup to disable.

Well ain't that a kick in the can! Guess that's why we like to root. At least for now, and until android becomes iOS 2.0, TiBu still works for user apps.
I went ahead and pulled the string on the eBay listing I posted. It's definitely a seller in Hong Kong so that worries me a bit. Luckily VISA or Mastercard are pretty good if you get scammed. Happened to me once on a purchase that was made out of China. The item I got was not as described and PayPal unfortunately wouldn't resolve it for some reason. Kind of irritated me that they wouldn't, but my VISA took care of it and performed a charge back no problems at all. If it comes and is perfect by all accounts, I'll let folks know it's legit. For that price you could get a fresh P2XL and rock on for years to come.

Verizon isn't GSM. It's currently CDMA and LTE with 5G rolling out. That article simply states that old 3G and non-HD voice 4G will no longer be able to activate on Verizon's network. Verizon has never been GSM, to my knowledge. Soon there will be no such thing as GSM or CDMA, only 4G and 5G, and whatever comes after that.

I've been trying to find a manufacturer to stick with after bouncing around a lot over the years. I was hoping that Google would be it with the new devices. Not quite sure on that. If I return this, I'm sticking with Samsung. I'm on Verizon, so most of the alternative devices (Xiaomi and the likes) are a no go.
My only issues with Samsung is they stick ads in everything and they have their separate store for updating some of their apps. They need to remove both of those.

Didn't realize Xiaomi and the rest are no good with Verizon? Are they ok with ATT or T Mobile?
Yes. They work much better there. It mostly has to do with GMA and CDMA frequencies. AT&T and T-Mobile use GMA while Sprint and Verizon heavily rely on CDMA, which I guess is slowly changing. Verizon also likes to heavily limit what devices they allow on their network.

Xiaomi has next to zero compatible US bands. You'll have an awful time on T-Mobile, and I believe the same on AT&T.

Nice. Now they just need to dump their store and go strictly Play Store.
I mean, I agree, but it's not a huge deal. It auto-updates just like the play store does. Worst case scenario you check it once a month after the software update. /shrug
If I was ABSOLUTELY going to get a phone now, and I wasn't getting a pixel, I'd get a Oneplus 9 Pro. It's actually a great device, it just has **** software. Root it, and put a pixel experience ROM on it, and it's damn near identical to the 6 Pro. I actually think I like the hardware/feel of the 9 Pro better, especially in the pine green color.

My only issues with Samsung is they stick ads in everything and they have their separate store for updating some of their apps. They need to remove both of those.

I was like you ,was always a HTC fan ......then they went off the boil over from, them to the essential phone ,which was awesome and massively under rated ,when they didn't survive I moved to the one plus 6t loved it and moved to the one plus 8 pro .....but they seem to be going away from op attraction now ,so now the pixel 6 pro
From a op only things I miss are warp charge alert slider ......unless your a i sheep or Samsunh fan boy then I think it's always going to be jumping to what's best at the time
I did love OnePlus, but they're utterly crappy camera (in the past) had me move away from them. I hear they've greatly improved that. At the end of the day, Samsung probably offers the best all around package with the least agitations for me, currently. They've made great strides in their UI, bloat, and ad invasiveness. They still have a long way to go, though.
I'll hold on to this P6P for a week or so and put it though the ringer. If it doesn't smooth out, I'll just use my 4A 5G until the new line of Samsung's roll out as I've already sold both my S21 and S21+ to family.

Yes. They work much better there. It mostly has to do with GMA and CDMA frequencies. AT&T and T-Mobile use GMA while Sprint and Verizon heavily rely on CDMA, which I guess is slowly changing. Verizon also likes to heavily limit what devices they allow on their network.

To be a little more clear, the issue comes down to frequencies rather than technology right now. With LTE, all U.S. carriers are using the same standard that the rest of the world uses. Same with 5G. Verizon and Sprint's (now T-Mobile's) CDMA networks will be shut down next year. While Verizon has some limitations on devices on their network, AT&T has actually become far more restrictive.
The real issue is the frequency bands that the carriers use for LTE and 5G. For example, T-Mobile has nationwide LTE and 5G coverage using band 71, but almost no other carriers in the world use it, which means that most phones sold in Europe and Asia won't work on one of T-Mobile's primary bands and T-Mobile customers may not get service without it. Verizon and AT&T just picked up a bunch of C-band spectrum that T-Mobile and much of the world aren't using for 5G. They also have mmWave 5G using bands that aren't widely used outside the U.S. right now as well. Though mmWave is only deployed in a small number of high-density urban areas.
One of the great things about the P6P is that the U.S. model has basically all of the frequencies used in the U.S. and most other countries, including mmWave.
In terms of phones, if you want compatibility with U.S. carriers (particularly T-Mobile on band 71), flagship specs, and the ability to unlock a bootloader and root, you have very few options right now. OnePlus and Google are the big ones, as Samsung locks their bootloaders for models with U.S. frequencies. Asus, Motorola, and Sony have a couple phones that will work as well. This site is a good resource for phones that work with T-Mobile (and often Verizon and AT&T too).
Wow, thank you. Way more informative than my post.

For sure a good option but I wonder how compatible it is with Verizon or ATT. And I don't think there is a global version available.
Shipping update says I will get it today. Somehow I doubt that but will see. May not get the alternatives but we shall see.
LOL what a question to ask on the 6 Pro forums

Why not? If it looked like it was getting delayed for weeks what can one do?

Well if I have to explain it to you its like going into a car showroom and asking them what's the best alternative to their motors

We can agree to disagree. There are no salespeople in this forum. And as you can see people have been more than happy to help.
Hi. Hope everyone is doing well here in 2022! First forgive me for any information I lack. I'm just an old guy who prefers to buy cash "new" older top model Notes for a discount because it works for me. Since now the option for the US is between being able to root vs carrier aggregation, having my phone reliable for communication is top priority for me so Snapdragon it is...unfortunately. Saying that, I currently have a Note 8 U1 that still working flawlessly and with CCSWE I'm able to disable what I consider bloatware and apps that I don't use daily and that gives me fantastic battery life even 2 years in. Obviously having the U1 firmware helps not having T-Mobile's crapware installed, including that bright-ass annoying splash logo at boot-up...and that's what I'm getting at.
I would like to purchase a Note10+ 5G (N976U) but I noticed they don't have a U1 version nor know if there is an U1 firmware that could be Odin into it. Again, i would love to avoid any extra bloatware. My other option would be buying a N975U1 but I would be missing the 5G benefit. I'm also unsure if at this moment here in my location (Tucson, AZ, USA) having a 5G enabled phone is a huge improvement for data speeds, especially for someone who gets along well streaming Netflix at 4G LTE (the biggest strain I would put on a phone nowadays). I usually keep my phones for 2 years so I would have to be committed for a 5G...less phone for that time. At last, I emailed the developer of CCSWE and was told it works with the Note 10+, but with Android 11 in it I'm unsure. I would love to someone to chime in on this also. I would appreciate any info and opinions on this. Thank you very much and have a great one!
